PROS: Nice location, very comfortable bed. Ok kitchen and living area. Wireless internet. The window blinds in our room would not go down. Caretaker fixed soon after we called. We enjoyed the caretaker's dog visiting us during our 2-night stay. Free continental breakfast (we got 2 apples, 2 granola bars and 2 huge muffins), If you are looking for a quiet secluded place, this fits that criteria.

CONS: No TV. Very small bathroom. Unused buildings and other clutter on the property. Breakfast advertised as delivered between 0800-0830. We left at 0835 to get breakfast elsewhere. Breakfast was in the room upon our return.

If we visit this area again, we will stay elsewhere for better value for the price.

A group of 15 people, aged 10 to 70, enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing weekend a mile from Bryce Resort this summer. We stayed in the House Over the Pond (HOP), a custom-built home suspended over a fountain-fed pond, tucked in the woods near Mount Jackson, VA. Sitting on the back deck, watching the trees sway in the breeze, was fantastic. With six bedrooms on three floors, three baths, a modern kitchen, and multiple porch swings on the decks, we had plenty of space. With 1970s-era furniture and shag carpet, the place is comfortable and most convenient to so many activities in that area. We had a blast zip lining at Bryce Mountain (thanks Frank and Ryan), then fly fishing with Thad our superb trainer and guide. The House Over the Pond is rented by the same great folks who run the Sky Chalet Mountain Lodge just down the road from the HOP. Mona was most responsive and helpful. If you are into skiing or snowboarding in the winter, or hiking and swimming in the summer, then kicking back at night to play cards or watch satellite TV on a big screen, check out the HOP or the Chalet.

My wife was looking on the internet for a nice place to travel to a couple of years ago. We thought we would give it a try, nothing ventured nothing gained. We enjoyed our stay so much last year we went back again this year. If your are looking for alot of activity, lots of people, and someone to wait on you hand and foot, -----this is the wrong place. Depending on how many people in you group, there are three floors, like a small 3 story house, for people to stay. We have had the second floor both times, and enjoy the real wood burning fire-place. Heating and air-conditioning, kitchen, living-room bedroom and deck.
Fire wood is cut and is about 100 ft away. There is a nice place to dine out about 5 min. away. Golf, zip-line, skiing, nearby. Should you want to shop or go to "town" it is about a half hour to Harrisonburg. Caverns, a winery nearby also.
We love it and will go back again.

I came to Sky Chalet Mountain Lodge on my own with my dog and stayed in one of the Mountain Getaway rooms. The room was very cozy and clean with a very comfortable bed and the view is beautiful. The walls are thin so you can hear people walking around and talking in the adjacent rooms, but for all but one of my nights there the other people staying in the lodge were very quiet.

The lodge is in a very quiet area, but there are restaurants and tourist attractions nearby (within a 15 minute drive). I recommend Shrinemont and the Shenandoah Caverns.

It is a GREAT place to stay if you plan to bring your dog. There are several trails for going for walks as well as a couple of big fields where my dog had a blast running around. I recommend bringing a flashlight if you want to take your dog out at night as it gets really dark once the sun goes down and you won't be able to stray too far from the lodge without a flashlight.

All in all I had a lovely time and I would love to go back again!

We stayed in the Mt. Paradise Room, which had an electric fireplace, a very nice jacuzzi, and no television. There are several rooms in the lodge, but the Paradise room is the only room on the top floor. The lodge is situated near nothing noisy or busy, and the views from the room were beautiful, Skyline Drive is also nearby. I would highly recommend this place as a romantic weekend getaway!

The Sky Chalet is a wonderful place to stay if you enjoy nature, the mountains, peace & quiet, and privacy -- and especially if you are looking for a place that allows dogs but is still nice. (We've found that many places that allow dogs don't meet our standards in terms of cleanliness, etc.) We stayed in the 2nd floor 1 bedroom mountain view suite and loved it. The suite consists of a bedroom and bathroom adjoining a living room/kitchen/dining area with a wall of windows with a spectacular mountain view, including french doors opening to a deck overlooking the same view. The decor, fireplace and vaulted ceiling give it a real mountain-lodge feel. The bed was far better than most hotel beds and much like the beds in higher quality hotels. The bathroom was small but clean. The accomodations were clean and nice, but what we really loved was the location. It's on a mountain ridge surrounded by many acres of woods and there are multiple trails leading in different directions. (It's the perfect place to vacation with a dog, with many options for walking right from the lodge.) Yes, the property is adjacent to Bryce Resort, and you can walk to parts of Bryce (including the top of the ski lift) from the property, but it doesn't seem like you are near anything. We followed one of the trails down the mountain early one morning and ended up on the edge of a farm in the valley, and it was just breath-taking. There's also a large clearing on top of the mountain, perfect for fetching balls (if you or your dog are so inclined). And in the morning breakfast is brought to you in a basket - which includes a dog treat if you bring your dog along. Sky Chalet is unique in that it is sort of a bed and breakfast, but it lacks the bed and breakfast feel (where the owner and the guests are all in one house and all eat breakfast in a room together). The owners live in a separate house on the property, and we only met the owner's daughter and dog when they delivered our breakfast (the dog didn't actually deliver the breakfast - he was just along for the walk) -- the owners appeared to respect our privacy, so we didn't see them. This is something we really liked -- when in a bed and breakfast, we always feel a bit uncomfortable, like we are guests in a stranger's home. One negative about the property is that there are several buildings that were part of the original lodge and restaurant, and they are closed up with "no trespassing" signs, and that's what you see when you first drive up, and it doesn't look very inviting. But if you keep driving to the last building, you'll get to the Sky Chalet Mountain Lodge, which is where you stay (and what I've described above). There are two restaurants in the area, the restaurant at Bryce which we didn't try, and a place called Hot Plates, which we went back to 3 times. There are also some restaurants just down the road in Mount Jackson, which also has some beautiful old buildings. There are all kinds of activities available at Bryce (we recommend the zipline) and lots of good hiking nearby. There's also a wonderful store just down the road called Wetlands Trading Company -- they have many whimsical yard ornaments plus many other things. We are happy we stayed at Sky Chalet rather than the other dog-friendly bed & breakfast in the area (which was advertised as "in a quiet country setting" but was actually close to Interstate 81). The Sky Chalet is truly in a quiet country setting. We highly recommend it and we plan to get back up there again soon.

My husband and I stayed at the "Sky Chalet" in Basye, VA to celebrate our anniversary. We rented one of their mountain view suite rooms that included a living area. When we arrived our room and living area were on the lowest level. However there were also 2 other bedroom/bathroom rooms attached to our common area by doors. These were rented by other guests. The doors were locked shut but you can still hear everything that is going on in the adjoining rooms--and I emphasize everything. There is just no privacy and that's a deal breaker for me. And we also heard every step the folks staying on the floor above us made--they woke up at 6 AM, we were also waking up then. I noticed the positive review on this site was from someone who rented the honeymoon suite that is the entire top floor-so there are less walls/ceilings being shared.

The views are pretty and the delivered breakfast is decent but my husband and I felt the website made the place seem more classy than it is. Also there is only 1 real restaurant close by, it's a very remote area. I'd spend my time and money elsewhere.

Booked late on Orbitz for a last minute vacation for two nights with my wife and two kids. Check in was quick and easy but we were told the indoor pool was closed for renovations when we checked in, which came as a surprise. The staff said it was posted on Orbitz but I never saw it. When we got to the condo, we were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was and pretty much every utensil you would need was in the room, if you decide to eat in. The condo looked like it has been recently renovated, but the furniture was a little older. When my son (about 175 pounds) sat in the chair in the living room, the right rear leg gave out and he ended up in the floor (not hurt, we laughed). I called to report it the next morning. The second night, while watching a movie, we heard dripping from the main level bathroom/laundry room and upon investigating, found the ceiling peeling away and water dripping from upstairs. I went upstairs and cut off the water to the toilet and the water stopped dripping. Called the after hours emergency number and a maintenance guy called back a few minutes later. He said he'd be there to check it in about 45 minutes. When he came, he offered to move us but it was already around 11 PM and we were checking out the next morning so we declined. Checkout was quick and the receptionist apologized but did not offer any money back or anything else. I would not choose to stay here again. The location is beautiful and the grounds were well kept but pretty remote and the closest restaurants are all about twenty-five minutes away except for an onsite restaurant attached to the resort and golf course. I think the renovations on the room were mostly superficial and they mostly covered up issues instead of fixing them.

Agree with the other post, that the views are great. But the amenities are not so great. We never saw the innkeeprs, which could be good or bad, but many things were also not as they seemed when talking to the staff before deciding to stay there. First of all, the property is a dump -- all the buildings are really really run down, they have no restaurant/store, except for the new building where the rooms are. and th erooms are only separated by a door -- there is one common room with access to all the bedrooms, so you can hear everything going on in the room next to yours. also, there are really only 2 restaurants nearby -- in the summer. in the winter, i suppose there is more stuff open, since it is so close to bryce. but we were very disappointed with the accomodations. my wife is allergic to nuts, and i told the innkeepers that upon making the reservation, but they still gave us stuff in the breakfast basket that had nuts in it. overall, not impressed. keep looking -- there are better places in the valley you can stay at.

We really enjoyed our stay at Sky Chalet. The views from the property are beautiful, and the room was very nice. We stayed in the "honeymoon-type" suite, complete with a small private deck, a jacuzzi for two, and a faux fireplace. The innkeepers left us alone, delivering our breakfast in a small basket every morning outside our door. It's an ideal place for a weekend getaway, and quite close to Bryce and a couple of vineyards. Just a warning--the walls are a bit thin, so you might hear some of the other guests...
