My husband and I were fortunate enough to stay for 5 days at Layla’s. We were graciously greeted by the owner Sandy and immediately felt welcome. We always travel with our 2 dogs, one being a mildly intimidating female German Shepherd. Sandy’s hospitality never wavered and he immediately developed a connection with her. The food is amazing, you better bring your appetite! Sandy and Grant cook with their heart, the omelets and waffles are unmatched. The lodge has on older ambience that reminds you of your childhood with the warmth and smell l of fire-burnt wood. The room was spacious and clean, the linen was pristine and the bed was comfortable. My husband regularly wakes up around 4 AM and slept until 7 because the lodge felt so homey. The lodge is home to 3 beautiful English Setters; Layla, Stella, and Remi. They are sweet, fun loving, very clean, and they played well with our 2 dogs. Hospitality is a challenging business and a two-way street; Sandy gets it right. If you have a self-loathing sense of entitlement, this may not be your place. This place feels like home, like your Grandparents home. If you like that feeling Layla’s is your place.

Overall our family had a wonderful time staying at Layla's lodge. We made friends and joined folks that were staying at the lodge and made conversation around a campfire. The rooms were great. The breakfast food was good. Sandy the owner would stop for conversation and we felt like we were staying with close family. Perfect place to bring your dog and enjoy the outdoors. Will return to Layla's next time we visit Vermont.

Sandy was gracious beyond words in working with us on a recent ski trip to Mt. Snow. We were in a last-minute jam due to some policy changes at the mountain and Sandy stepped up to make our stay at his place very comfortable!

My wife and I stayed at the Lodge over Valentines Day Weekend this past winter. We booked a room with a wood burning fireplace at an extra cost only to find that we weren't allowed to have a fire in the fireplace and that we weren't entitled to a refund for the fireplace option. The weekend was nice; the food was good and the staff was courteous. After we left, we saw on our credit card statement that the Lodge had billed us double for what the room should have cost, and the owners of the Lodge aren't refunding the the overcharge amount. The Lodge owners have been difficult to deal with in acquiring the refund and 6 months later, still won't credit the over charged amount. In these past months they have provided very poop customer service and extremely bad business practices. Not a very good way to go about their first few years in business.

We ski at several mountains in VT and usually stay at the same local Inn’s for each. This was our third stay at Layla’s (formerly Four Season’s). We booked seven weeks early, since we had specific dates and had another family of friends staying the same dates. Here’s where the list of problems begin.

We made a reservation and used a credit card to hold the rooms. Without our consent and without sending a confirmation email (we asked for it up front), this “reservation” became a “prepay” for the entire stay (4 nights with 2 rooms, plus taxes). I had no idea until I saw my credit card statement. This was new for them and not communicated, so this is the first deception. No other Inns in VT do this.

Sandy, the owner, also charged for an “added or extra” night, for both rooms. This is the scam or second deception (depending how you look at it). They also charged our friends for an extra night, so it was intentional - not a mistake! Sandy, said that it was his mistake and since he did not want to pay the additional credit card fee (to credit us back), he would pay me back in cash when we arrived. Is the fee really that much?....and I’m supposed to float his cash flow for two cycles?

These two items sure look like a cash flow problem.

When we checked in, he said that he didn’t have the cash and could not give any reason as to why. So this is the next scam or lie. I demanded a check and he said that he would provide us a check when we check out. This became the next lie.

The morning of our check out, Sandy did not have the check that he promised he would and said that he would have it in the afternoon. More lies. We had to go out of our way, return back to the Inn after skiing that afternoon and there was no check and no Sandy. He could have left the check with the manager. More lies and deception. Further, I was told that his cell phone battery was dead. More lies. I gave a detailed account of the financial to the Kate, the manager.

A week later and after several attempts, I was able to get Sandy live on the phone. He said the check, for the full $750 that he owed us, was just mailed. More deceptive lies. Of course, several weeks later and we have still not received a check. He will not answer my calls, return my calls or return any emails.

I look for places that seek repeat guests and this is not one of them. The place is never even close to being half full, even on holidays. There are plenty of other nice Inns around Mount Snow which are run above board. I’ve brought two other families to stay with us at Layla’s and this is what I get. I cannot see why anyone would stay here.

The new slogan can be - Come to Layla’s. Other than the deceptions, scams and lies, plus an obvious cash flow problem, the remodeled rooms are nice!

We thought from the description that we would have a nice, safe place to leave our dog while we explored the area, but the "Luxury Kennels" were largely unmaintained and borderline health hazards for humans, let alone our pet. Apparently no one ever cleans the indoor dog run.

The sleeping room was decent (but not for the price). The rest of the facilities looked like many projects had been started, then abandoned. Rusting tools, old propane tanks, errant bits and pieces of old signs, fenceposts and snowmobiles litter the property. Deck off of our room had rotting stair treads. Went in search of coffee in the lobby during the "breakfast hours" and nothing, no one, nada. Deal breaker.

We thought we might have hit a gem with the Hotel Hell intervention a few months ago, but it appears that whatever advice was given has been slow to turn this place around. Can hardly wait to see the 8/18 episode to see if Gordon just threw up his hands and walked away.

I ordered a groupon for a two night, three day stay at Layla's Lodge. The photos of the groupon were unbelievable. So beautiful and looked like just our style. I checked the website and saw none of the same photos, instead old grandma looking spaces with dark cold guest rooms. I called before purchasing the groupon and asked why there was such a big difference. The owner said to me that he was afraid to go public with all of the renovated photos because he was unsure he wouldn't be ready for the crazy amount of business it would bring him. (I have NO clue why I believed him at this point) I explained that my husband and I were very picky about where we stayed, we would be driving a long way to come and that the reason we liked what we saw so much is because everything looked clean, fresh and bright! I then asked him how much of the facility had been renovated because I needed to be 100% sure I was coming to the same place I saw on groupon. He said to me "oh everything is basically done. About 97.5% of the lodge is renovated. Sure you might find some wallpaper hanging from the hallway, but this place is just amazing. The ONLY rooms not finished yet are the bunk bed rooms and I'm sure you and your husband aren't wanting to stay there, right?" Oh the owner was a charmer. He knew exactly what to say. He told us that Gordon Ramsey himself came and kicked his butt into gear and turned this lodge into an amazing place. So we ordered the King Suite and drove the 3 hours to the lodge. And here's where it gets disturbing:

We walk in and see none of what we saw on groupon. Wallpaper everywhere, it smelled so weird even my dog was trying to run back to the car. We weren't sure where reception was until we heard two guys calling out from this messy hole in the wall. The owner that I had talked to was there, standing barefoot in a tshirt to greet us. He showed us to our room and then left. I was in awe over what we found. Stains all over the carpet, furniture broken, missing blinds, and zero hint of renovation. The walls were so thin we could hear them down the hall. We were the only people there, too if that tells you anything. I immediately wanted to cry because this was supposed to be our anniversary getaway and we had been seriously lied to.

We packed everything up and asked where we could get our money back. The owner looked so shocked (I have no clue why, he obviously knew we would find out he lied) and told us we would have to contact groupon. So we left and drove the 3 hours to go home. A 6 hour trip for nothing. LUCKILY we got a full refund for the trip.

All the reviews I read were good and I have no clue why so I wanted to make a review myself. If you have the chance to visit Dover, Vermont, do NOT stay at this lodge. The owner is such a liar I can't understand how he lives with himself. I'm also VERY confused about why Gordon Ramsey would put his name on this place because frankly that is a huge embarrassment to him. Will never have anything good to say about Layla's Lodge and I hope everyone takes my advice to stay far far away.

Responded 9 Nov 2013
I am terribly sorry that we did not meet up to the expectations you had and that you drove the distance you did. We strive to make sure all our guests, both 2 and 4 legged feel comfortable and welcomed at Layla’s Riverside Lodge. As explained we are still currently undergoing the renovations that were implemented by Gordon Ramsey and hope to be done soon. Our website will soon depict the renovated rooms. With that being said, please allow us a second chance to make it up to you. Please contact me directly for a complimentary weekend. I will email you pictures of the room that day so there will be no misconception on what you will be walking into. We look forward to welcoming you and your husband back to Layla’s Riverside Lodge with the hope you return home with a smile on your face and a new outlook of us.

First, let me state for the record I have yet to see the episode of Gordon Ramsay's show that featured the Inn. My wife, for the first time in years, wanted a quick weekend getaway to celebrate her birthday. She also wanted us to find a place that was dog friendly. My friend had seen Layla's featured on Ramsay's t.v. show, and recommended we stay there. A 2 1/2 hr drive from Boston was more than worth it. The picturesque town of Wilmington is a shirt drive from Layla's. West Dover is postcard material for a classic New England winter/holiday season. Upon arriving at the hotel, the REAL boss, Layla, greeted us at the door. The most courteous and well behaved English Setter you will eve meet. Also, the new addition to the family, Stella the 5th month old English Setter, greeted us with youthful enthusiasm. The hardest working G.M. in the business, Kate greeted us. We had reserved the best suite at the Inn, the Honeymoon Suite, and Kate had flowers and surprises awaiting my wife, as they knew it was her birthday weekend. The room exceeded expectations. To the point where my wife didn't even want to leave the room for our stay. A huge soaking tub off of the bedroom, with a beautiful view out the balcony doors to the roaring, beautiful waters of the Deerfield River at the base of Mt. Snow. If you are staying at Layla's, please don't dine out anywhere else in town. You would be doing yourself a great disservice. The food is first class. All organic, all local, and the portions are incredible. If they have the surf and turf, get it. The homemade pasta is fantastic as well. The wait staff at the restaurant is on top of everything. Friendly, professional, and they feel like family. Gabby and Darcy are wonderful. Actually, from Sandy and Kate, all the way down to the Ross in the cleaning services, Layla's is a family. Sandy is an incredible owner. He takes time to get to know every guest at the Inn. I looked forward to any chance we had to just sit down and talk about anything under the sun.

Dog owners, we had complete access to the facilities. As an owner of two dogs (who may have enjoyed their stay Justas much as we did), I can say with all assuredness that the kennel and dog play areas are clean, safe, and sanitary. I would most certainly feel comfortable boarding the dogs there while we went on a day trip to Mt. Snow or into town.

We came in as guests, and left (reluctantly), feeling like family.

And on our way out, Layla and Stella made sure to say goodbye to us, just as they had welcomed us.

We cannot wait to return, and to Sandy, Kate, and all who helped make this a memorable birthday for my wife and I, we look forward to seeing you again in 2015.

Happy New Year!

We were originally going to stay for 2 nights. We enjoyed it so much, we extended our stay

Myself and my husband spent a weekend here to do the Green mountain challenge. This was during the low season in Vermont as it is a ski area. The hotel was very quiet as expected and consequently we got upgraded to a suite. The room was very nicely decorated in a style that suits the surroundings. Sandy who runs the place was there when we arrived, as well as Layla the dog. Sandy was very nice and Layla is a very friendly dog. And that's coming from someone who is not a fan of dogs. Given it was low season there was not someone on the front desk all the time. Which suits us as we were out doing the challenge most of the weekend. The breakfast range was very small. Just two options depending on what sandy had available at the time. Again fine by us as we are pretty easy when it comes to breakfast.
The best feature was the spa bath in the room. It was very much appreciated by tired muscles.
Overall a very nice place to stay and a very relaxed atmosphere. I could see it being quite a nice place in the winter too.
