My wife set up the family to take a trip to Rough Creek instead of travelling elsewhere for Thanksgiving. We stayed in a cabin near the skeet range. The room was clean and comfortable. We did have trouble getting the televisions to work, one would not turn on the other would not turn off, but the staff came out and sorted it the second day of our stay.
The food at the lodge was really good. I was pleasantly surprised at the offerings and there was enough variety to keep the whole family happy. Thanksgiving day featured all the standards, Turkey, mash potatoes, etc. But with a definitely unique twist. Left stuff and wanting more at the same time.
My son and I hunted hogs and ducks. I am not a big fan of the hog hunt as it is nothing more than driving around a penned area shooting them as they run. Lots of carcasses littering the area as well gave it a bit of surreal feel. Not my cup of tea. But the guide who drove the atv was hysterical and enthusiastic and worked to make sure we had a good time.
We also did the trap shooting range. It brought out the competitive side in my son and he beat me each round. But the time there was great and the guide helpful, offering shooting tips that unfortunately worked better for my son than for me.
We also went duck hunting. This was a highlight of the trip. My son had never done t before. We were driven out to a well made blind and the guide set out the decoys. He even had a trusty Lab to retrieve the ducks. We bagged a few, likely due to the lessons learned at the shooting range, and returned happy. The staff cleans the ducks for you, packs them on ice in a cooler and provided a great recipe for duck chili. I made it when we returned home and it is now a staple in our recipe book.
Staff were also very helpful and attentive.
There are some reviews that talk about price, but I think the level of service and quality of offerings warrants it. I think this would be a great place if someone from out of Texas or another country wanted to get a luxury view of what it is like out in the countryside.

Before we even arrived I was very impressed by their thoroughness to make sure we were fully accommodated. Arriving on site you are instantly wowed by the beauty and how kind and helpful the staff are. We are a family of five and no one was bored the entire stay. The food will spoil you and the resort was very comfortable and clean. We plan to go back many times! I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for a relaxing get away or an active one.

Ate dinner last night at Rough Creek Lodge outside of Glen Rose Tx. What a marvelous experience. The 7oz. Filet was the best steak I have ever eaten, served with poblano mash potatoes and bacon wrapped asparagus. The appetizers are exceptional as was our dessert of chocolate lava cake served with caramel ice cream.

Save your pennies as this place is pricey BUT well worth it!

We usually go skiing over spring break. With a 2-bedroom condo on a hill like Jackson Hole or Whistler, skis, boots, helmets, poles, lift tickets, meals out and a couple of spa treatments, we spend $1,000/night.

Because our oldest is a freshman in college, our sons spring breaks were different weeks. We decided to finally try Rough Creek.

I would say that rough creek has great architecture and friendly service. The dinner for four would run $300-350 in Dallas. I would price the cabin at $379 per night. $679-729 seems about right for our experience. But Rough Creek Lodge cost $1700 per night. $1700, yep.

What does a $1700 per night accommodation get you in Glen Rose?

We paid for lunch, which wasn’t up to the same standard as dinner. We paid to shoot. To golf. To go to the spa. I should have looked more closely at the long list of included activities. Swings, nature trails, a playground an unattended climbing wall, hay bails. A pond with two canoes and spots to fish (although I don’t know what fishing cost). The free stuff is the kind of stuff that would be free at any city or national park. Except for hay bails. Those were unique.

Riding an ATV was $132 per HOUR. The free activities were tired, some closed, just not appealing. That’s my fault. $500 per adult was a crazy price to agree to.

Lesson learned. If we aren’t willing to pay this, I don’t believe there is a large enough audience to sustain your operation. We were very disappointed.

The cancellation policy is 30 Days. Deposit, 50%. We should have cancelled and forfeited the deposit.

Response from Paul Boccafogli, General Manager at Rough Creek Lodge
Responded 12 Oct 2020
Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback. I am sorry that you felt we didn't meet your expectations. Rough Creek Lodge offers a long list of over 80 activities on property with many of them complimentary. We sell a room-package that includes a 5-star dining experience for dinner and breakfast. Our complimentary activities include: 660 foot long zipline, 40 foot climbing wall, jump houses, 2 pool and hot-tubs on property, tomahawk throwing, archery, BB gun, air rifle, fishing, trikes, boats, canoes, petting zoo, pony rides, train rides, 40 bicycles, fossil hunting, 5 mile nature trail, Kids Ranch with foosball, table tennis, basketball shooting, video games just to name a few. The hay bails you mentioned were barriers used on our paintball field. Activities that require a gun would typically be a paid activity with a Professional Guide. Example would be paintball, sporting clays, 5-stand or wobble trap, rifle ranges and all hunting activity. Non-Guided activity like the use of a CanAm 5 seater ATV would be an extra charge. Based on the type of activities you participated in...it would add to your overall cost for the weekend. $450 per person, per day is actually fairly less expensive here at RCL for a party of 4. When you compare Rough Creek Lodge to other Resorts that are similar when you add room, meals, activities, tax and gratuity...we are a great value. Other feedback we have received from our guests tell us they feel the level of service and amenities are well worth the money spent.

It's been several years since my family has visited Rough Creek. The Covid issue ruled out travel by air, so we took the opportunity to revisit Rough Creek (roughly 1.5 hours from our home in Dallas), and we weren't disappointed. There are a lot of reasons the stay was top notch; however, chief amongst them are the people, who not only provide excellent service, they go out of their way to look for ways to serve and to make your stay more enjoyable. in addition to top-notch service, you have 5-star accomodations and food and a laundry list of things to do for my wife and two kids that ensure no one gets bored. Paul and his team have done an excellent job training their staff and it shows. can't wait to revisit again before Summer is over.

Our recent visit to rough Creek Lodge was amazing from start to finish.
The staff was friendly and helpful, greeting us as we walked around the grounds and asking if there was anything they could do to make our stay better. They were gracious in granting our request, such as… Seating us away from crowds and children in the dining room, so us to have a quiet place to converse during our delicious meal.
The food is outstanding! I so wish it was closer so that we could just dine there in an evening. The choices aren’t numerous, but carefully picked so as every diner can find something that matched their taste. The steak and salmon or outstanding. Even the buttermilk lime dressing is incredible. The desserts of chocolate lava cake, and the banana pudding Brulé worse totally amazing.
The rooms are extremely comfortable with good lighting, comfortable beds, and comfortable rocking chairs on the patio.
There are numerous activities to enjoy both inside and outside.
You can’t be disappointed in a stay at Ruff Creek Lodge

Rough Creek is an amazing jewel, offering every type of family activity you can think of. My family and I are regular visitors (from Austin) because it's a perfect getaway to historicTexas hospitality in a serene country setting. The amenities are too long to list here, but you can find everything on their website and all activities are safely and courteously overseen by staff members who value your joyful experience above all. If you decide to stay at Rough Creek Lodge, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommend!

Had a Family Suite with 2 queen beds and a set of bunk beds. My 17 and 14 yr old had no trouble with the bunk beds and they are full length. The room was down stairs and met all our needs, but if you go ask for an upstairs if you do not want to hear the kids upstairs. The grounds are still being built to add more amenities. We road horses and rented a 4 wheeler. Had fun with both, but keep in mind they do not advertise that every extra function has a 21% service charge added. This place has a lot for smaller kids, but not a place for teenagers. Lots of smaller kids.

We've been coming to Rough Creek Lodge for about 10 years now and the level of service is simply amazing. The employees really love what they do and they love serving others......so much so that it was something to highlight and discuss with our kids (13 & 11) in terms of how to treat people and to actively show how to love your neighbor in practical terms. Their service is "pro-active" in that nearly all of the employees actively seek to answer your questions or be helpful without you even asking. Truly a well run operation. Well done, Paul!

This was a family trip with son and his family. The children are 10 and 6. I was overwhelmed at the cost, however, once there and seeing all that was available and how much we all enjoyed it, the thought of the high cost seemed to disappear. Between the 6 of us, we enjoyed fishing, rockwall climbing, the petting zoo, fossil hunting (found 8 shark teeth), zipline, miniature golf, all the board games, pingpong, shuffleboard, and pool. The maze was a big hit as was basketball, soccer, etc. Everywhere one looked there was some activity available.
The food was excellent. Large breakfast and fantastic dinners. None of us even ate lunch we were still full from breakfast and busy with activities to realize we were hungry!
Everyone on staff was polite, courteous and helpful. We totally loved our stay. At the end of the trip as we were loading up our cars, the grandkids asked if we could come back next year. .......I am saving up money now!!!!!

This is a five star resort and is priced accordingly. I’m not much of a drinker, so can’t really answer knowledgeably. When the guys had beers, I vaguely recall appx $7 each. Mixed drinks were obviously more $$. House wine was relatively reasonably priced.
