Great customer service. We couldn’t originally get a reservation but Michelle rang me back to say they’d had a cancellation, so we were able to stay there with our friends for an evening.
They have responded to the new rules for Covid 19 really well - lots of hand sanitiser, a one way system through the hotel, a marquee outside for evening meals, you are handed a little bag of tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, soap, shower gel and a toilet roll on arrival - all very safe.
Our room was compact - enough for what we needed for a night. Last orders was at 10.30pm so any noise outside stopped just after 11pm (they were not able to open inside until after our visit)
Breakfast was ordered by 8pm and served in your room the next morning and the food was excellent.

This is a very traditional inn that has not been recently remodeled. If you’re looking for a basic place to rest your head, this would be an okay option if you can sleep through lots of bar noise. The checkin process happens at the bar in the restaurant below and takes you back to the 80s. Room keys on a large key chain, hand write all your info, but Wi-Fi for payment.

The bar below gets very rowdy and loud from around 3:30pm until 12am. The rooms we had faced the parking lot and it was ridiculously loud, a lot. Our window was in perfect view for the smoker patio so anyone could see right into our room a majority of the time. In addition, smoke smell would come into our room along with smells from the restaurant below. We also had the loud glass recycle dumping sound nightly which was quite loud as well.

Bathrooms are okay but nothing fancy and showers definitely leave a lot to be desired. They’re good enough for what you need.

The restaurant below was okay. We ate there twice (first time to try it, second because it was convenient). They were very knowledgeable about food allergies as we are traveling with someone allergic to gluten.

Staff was extremely friendly and always helpful when we had questions. Prices were very reasonable though.

We stayed here two nights for a bike festival and I wouldn’t want to stay any longer than that. I’d only recommend staying here to pass through on your way to the next location, if that.

Clean, basic accommodation at a very realistic price. Really good breakfast and plenty of it.
Restaurant for evening meals and drinks was 'slightly' expensive, but food was good and arrived quickly enough that hungry children weren't complaining.
Service was friendly and very efficient and the staff are trying very hard to stay within covid guidelines; bless 'em.
The hotel also provided secure overnight storage for bikes at no additional cost. Well done!
Will stay there again if available next time we go to Dyfi bike park.

Stopped off for breakfast on a Market day while cycling. Staff very helpful and service quick and efficient. The simple breakfast was well cooked, served neatly laid out and the ingredients all fresh. Sausages are a give away of poor quality but these were lovely.

Recently visited The White Lion with some friend over the bank holiday weekend. On entering, we found a suitable area to sit as we were a group of 9 (obvz over 2 tables #covid) to be then told about 30mins in that we must "move" because they need to prepare for breakfast the next morning, which if you ask me, this should be done the next morning. Of course we moved but it was unsuitable and ruined our vibe! Last orders were called for 22:30 which was fine but to have the young girls working there come over in such a rude manner asking us to "pour your drinks in this plastic cup, we need to wash the glasses now" isn't the way to speak to respectable paying customers and all staff need a few lessons in customer service/etiquette and how to dress appropriately working in a public house.

Hope this read and changes made!

Part of our long-established closing down procedure is always to relocate those customers seated in the restaurant to the bar area as this allows our kitchen staff to set up for breakfast before they finish their shift for the evening. Another part of our closing procedure on busy nights is to always transfer remaining drinks to open plastic containers for safety to avoid glassware being taken onto the streets. Staff could have explained our procedures and the reasoning behind them more clearly so as not to have affronted you on this occasion and we will draw this to their attention thank you.

We stayed for one night. We had a short break away for a little walking holiday we couldn't check in until 2 so we did our walking first got very dirty and muddy though we could quickly get to our room as we paid in advance. This was not the case as we had to wait in a busy pub while they sorted our key and filled in forms. They told me I had to pay but when I checked I already paid this was a little confusing. We went to our room which wasnt so bad a little dated but for the price ok. We got changed and went down for food everything I wanted on the menu they couldn't cook because the grill wasnt working so ended up with a chicken burger not worth the money at all. In the morning we went to check out and was told we had an outstanding balance which we wasnt aware of apparently you have to pay for you dog to stay on top of your original fee. There was no mention of this extra charge when we booked the hotel. Overall not happy. Would not recommend.

Sat outside for some food we were asked to download the app to order drinks and food, whilst doing that we were asked to fill in the covid visitor form which was all good. Drinks came out in a reasonable time.
That was all I can say that was good.
I had a simple bangers and mash. When I say simple, the bangers were over cooked and the mash was Cold. Peas weren't much better.
A simple dish woefully made.
This took almost 50 minutes to arrive, is not like it's a complicated dish!
Went in to use the toilet with a face covering to find lots of customers walking around with masks on. As far as I'm aware at this time they were to be worn whilst moving around the premises.
Very disappointed.

Response from Alan Murphy, Owner at The White Lion Hotel
Responded 8 Jun 2021
Your experience of our food was not as we would have wished on this occasion and your comments are noted thank you. Across our relatively large site we are unable to manage the movement of each individual from A to B as they move around. The responsibility to wear a mask is incumbent upon the individual and for our part we also constantly challenge anyone who is not wearing a mask when indoors. Sadly there are many individuals who are unable to think for themselves or for others and for whom we must constantly reinforce the message and we will continue. Another of our responses to restrictions includes portaloos located near to our garden so that customers who prefer to remain outdoors have the option not to enter the premises to use the loo.

We booked to stay here for 2 nights. I wish I had read the reviews before booking. We ate here on the first night which was OK. I had the homemade chilli which I enjoyed but some friends had the burgers and none were impressed with them. The room was poor. I had booked a deluxe double which had 2 single beds bolted together with 2 old saggy sofa beds in the room as well. The room a friend stopped in had dirty mugs from the previous occupants. The upside is that they served a decent breakfast and all the staff were friendly. At £190 for 2 nights for 2 people it's overpriced for very basic accommodation. Don't bother staying here get an airbnb instead.

We booked into the White Lion for three nights as we were planning on spending some time at the Mach Loop, but due to poor weather we spent much more time in and around Machynlleth than originally planned.

The place is very easy to find, right in the centre of town with ample car parking at the rear. We checked in at the bar where we were given a back door key and our room key, room 9 on the top floor. This was an en-suite room, other rooms seemed to have bathrooms across the hall.

Initially we were disappointed with the room which was very dated. The floors were uneven, the wardrobe and beds rattled as you walked around and the TV would randomly turn itself on. On the first night, it was pretty cold but we made use of the convector heater we found in the wardrobe. The bathroom was basic, but adequate and the shower functioned. The only noise we had from the bar area was on the Thursday night, when loud music could be heard until around midnight.

Once the disappointment of the room had passed, we found the good things about the White Lion. Staff are friendly and always seem to be cleaning. The food is tasty and comes in good size portions. The bar seems full of locals, workers staying away and tourists which made the afternoons and evenings in the bar pleasant.

Breakfast, which was included in the stay was always hot and tasty and served in good time.

If scoring on accommodation alone we'd score lower, but the pub side of this business brings the score up.

It looked like some of the rooms were being renovated during our stay, so the future could be brighter.
