Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wanted to visit after watching all about the history there. Had lunch which was really nice, landlady was friendly, felt really cosy with the fire burning. Would defo recommend, not brave enough to stay there but nothing spooky happened during our visit.

Fantastic pub with really friendly staff, dog friendly in the snug area but no dogs allowed inside on Sundays as so busy, only in the outside areas, where there is ample space. Great atmosphere and great food

On a Sunday, dogs are only allowed in a tiny crowded area to the corner of the bar. They are not allowed in the other bar area, even though it’s non-carpeted/mainly drinks only. Bar lady was very rude and generally it was not a good atmosphere. Spend your money elsewhere.

Went to the The Skirrid Mountain Inn it was a lovely trip the day was pleasant the Skirrid is 900 years old and the oldest in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 it is also very haunted 👻 the wood in the front door is believed to be 1500 years old , I had lunch there which was very good and the staff I talked to were very helpful and friendly I will be going again

My husband and I visited for a meal whilst on holiday. As we had our dog with us we ate in the back room. The good points first. Well, think there's only one really and that was the price. Two meals and two drinks (one glass of wine and a soft drink) came to £28.50. Not bad but glad we hadn't paid any more. On to the not so good points. Considering it's the oldest pub in Wales, it did not have a particularly good atmosphere. Old beams and deep windowsills maybe, but it felt more like an ordinary old fashioned back street pub. Gaudy patterned carpet, sticky wooden tables, bottle of Sarson's. Small plastic laminated menu on which none of the dishes sounded particularly appealing. My husband went for the chicken, ham and leek pie with chips and I ordered a vegetable taglne with rice. Unfortunately I was informed a few minutes later that they didn't have any tagine so I chose the chicken in a pepper and whiskey sauce with new potatoes. When the food arrived it didn't look very appetising. My husband's pie was ok but the chips could have been hotter and there were only about a teaspoonful of peas. My chicken was a bit dry although the sauce was ok but the new potatoes were only just cooked and pretty tasteless. Presentation left a lot to be desired. The guy who served us didn't smile once or engage in pleasantries. All a bit disappointing. Needless to say we won't be making a return visit.

Omg I fell in love with this place the second I saw it! We were actually there for a paranormal event but i have to review the pub itself. With its stone face exterior and its old creepy decor inside, it's easy to step back in time to the dark days of when the building was used as a court house and place of mass execution! Entering the Oldest pub in Wales I was welcomed by a super friendly bar lady asking how she could help. Bought a few local beers and sat outside and took in the lively atmosphere of the pub. At the start of our Paranormal event we were treated to a delicious meal where I tried their Steak and ale pie.. a REAL PIE! I was left wanting more! The service was also extremely quick and very friendly. Exploring the rest of the building during the ghost hunt was so much fun, the bedrooms especially room 1 with the old Condemned Cell ( now a bathroom ) gave me the chills.. I really wanted to spend more time on the staircase sat near the " Hanging beam" but I wasn't given that opportunity which was fine. I would absolutely love to return and stay a few nights to take in more of this fascinating building. Did I see any ghost? No.. but just being there to soak up the atmosphere was enough for me. So much fun! Keisha and Craig from Newquay - Cornwall

From the moment we checked in and was greeted by Emma who was absolutely lovely and very funny we had a wonderful warm welcome from everyone there all the staff couldn’t do enough for us, the bar man please excuse me but I have forgotten his name but he had long red hair he was so great and it’s all of us, and being 2 couples of gay and lesbian it meant a lot, so will will definitely be back, the meal was great it tasted as good as it looked, the rooms was stunning true to the character of the inn, and being Pyschic myself we was aloud to to our very own ghost hunt, which there was a spirit of a man who took a step back behind the bar but was observing us, and a spirit called Maggie came through who’s name was Margaret, we had a fabulous sleep room 1 our friends Bev and Mel had room 2 and both of us had a wonderful sleep, the breakfast in the morning was as big as the Skirrid Mountain I couldn’t finish mine but it tasted gorgeous, the staff this morning was all so lovely and we was greeted by the land lady who came and spoke to all of us, we cannot wait to come back xx

OK atmosphere and reasonable beer. Slow service. The food was a disappointment though - quite expensive sausage and mash. We were pretty sure that the mash was dehydrated - or if it wasn't they had somehow managed to make it taste like it was.

Always visit the Skirrid when we're staying at the nearby Pen y Dre farm. The food is basic pub grub. I wish they'd relax the dog rule even more. What's the problem with dogs? It's not fun when it's raining & you lost lunch for 8 for on a Sunday because of your no dog rule! Great atmosphere.
