The Talbot Heirs is a great place to stay for comfort and location. Very small and unique. No check in or check out hassles or long wait at the lobby desk...easy check in and check out. Although small, the staff was great. We actually had two other couples with us and all had a nice large suite with a kitchen. The rooms are large enough to have a few couples meet and visit in the living room of the suite before heading out to Beale Street. Everything we wanted to do, while in Memphis, was within walking distance of the Talbot Heirs Guesthouse. I would recommend Talbot Heirs for a great convenient and very comfortable place to stay...especially if you tried of the conventional hotel stay and looking for something fun!

My wife and I loved this place. The rooms/suites are better than any hotel rooms we have stayed in with each uniquely decorated. The location is perfect and within easy walking distance of the Memphis restaurant and entertainment areas. The new owners are wonderful real life people and go out of their way to make you feel right at home. We would highly reccomend this hidden gem.

I thought this was a great little place. Only 8 suites, and tucked away on South Second St, (a few doors away from Automatic Slim's) very friendly and helpful staff, rooms with character, freezer full of ice-cream when we arrived! Five minute walk to Beale - it's what I imagined staying in Memphis would be like.

Talbot Heirs is conveniently located downtown, and the people are nice, but the hotel itself is nothing more than an old studio apartment building turned hotel (sort-of). Secretly, I got the impression that some people still live in the hotel rooms..

We stayed at the Talbot Heirs for two nights on 25th & 26th May 05.

When we booked online, it took a while to decide on Room 3 as all suites and rooms are furnished in completely different styles - we opted for the muted browns and creams of this room. The room itself was huge, complete with kitchenette, corrugated iron shower area(!), small drying room and a sun nook large enough for a table and couple of chairs.

Breakfast was simply orange juice, yoghurt, and coffee provided in the fridge, but that suited us fine.

Location wise, Talbot Heirs is a block and a half from Beale Street and opposite the Peabody and Peabody plaza ( It is also only half a block from the Rendevouz - which serves the best BBQ in Memphis)

We found the place a welcome change from large corporate hotels and was exactly what we had hoped to find from the description on the website.

We would happily stay here again and would totally recommend the place. They will also happily arrange a parking pass for the parking garage nearby.

Doesn't live up to its marketing image of a high class hostelry for the cognoscenti and the in-crowd. Rooms are high priced for chipped bathroom fixtures, cold cereal breakfast, and a large "welcome" sign in the room that states "Be nice or leave." I suggest the latter, even though ice cream in the freezer is a nice touch. Stay at the Peabody across the street and say high to Bernard Lansky.

Saw the "Be nice or Leave' sign, recognized it as tongue in cheek outsider art, took it with a grain of salt. Actually, I took it! (Bought it, that is.) This is the place for travelers who are tired of cookie-cutter rooms; across from the Peabody, steps from scrumptious, contemporary southern eateries and two or three blocks from Beale St.-and a block from the trolley. We found the hosts responsive and helpful, the premises clean. We are ourselves in the arts-poetry, photography, music and we seek out places that are more personal and have artistic flair. Hope to return!

Why do people stay at Comfort Inns, Westins, and Peabodys? Because they do not want any surprises; you know exactly what to expect. Now if you would rather have a surprise, and not know what will happen next, then the Talbot Heirs is the best experience. It is situated at the top of a long flight of stairs, and the hosts will even carry up your luggage if you are decrepit. But you will have to climb up and down the stairs yourself, unless you have brought your own porters to carry you. If you are unable to climb a flight of stairs then this is not the place for you. It is easy to miss and pass the single door entrance on Second Street with a painted sign above the door. It is next to the Flying Fish restaurant, and across from the Peabody Hotel, and a short couple blocks from Beale Street. There is supposed to be a reserved space on the street in front to stop and unload/load luggage but most times someone is parked there. Parking is a short walk away in a covered parking garage. Cost is 10$/day (paid to the guesthouse) with unlimited in and out privileges. The host will show you and even accompany you if you need more directions. You may not find this site under Hotels if you search, as it only takes telephone/fax reservations and not thru the internet, so it may be listed under Bed and Breakfasts or Guesthouses. You will start smiling as you are led along the hallway with interesting paintings on the wall, and your smile will only get bigger as you see your studio apartment-like suite. As soon as you walk in the room, you wish you were going to stay longer! There are 7 guest rooms, each a bit different. Ours (#7) has great decor, a sitting area in front of the very comfortable bed, a full kitchen (full refrigerator/freezer [you will hear it cycling on and off at night], stove, oven, sink, dishes, martini and wine glasses; but no microwave). The place was super clean. "Free" snacks, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea, bottled water, orange juice, etc. are included. There is a very pleasant sitting balcony deck (with high walls so only views of the sky). A walk-in closet, with two luggage racks. A roll-away bed is available for a third person. The bathroom had very high quality towels, and there was space next to the sink for toiletries; needed another towel rack. The hosts trade off every couple of weeks; we had Tom and Sandy who were extremely friendly, with great advice about restaurants and directions. It isn't often you have a host who quotes Gandhi while folding towels! We got to visit the large sunny front guestroom, with a separate bedroom and a large grand piano. Our cost was 190$/day total (including tax and parking). This was a great off-beat place to stay in Memphis; we hope to go back to stay longer.

We were in town for our 36th anniversary and decided to try something different. The Talbot Heirs certainly delivered!! Upon entering (Tom carried our bags up) you can sense the history in the building. The room was very comfortable and topped a nearby "chain" motel in cleanliness by leaps and bounds .The close proximity to downtown enabled us to walk to almost everything we had planned on seeing. Our hosts were friendly and helpful without being intrusive. They gave us several suggestions for eateries as well as entertainment. After visiting Memphis in September and again in November we refer to it as our new favorite city and the Talbot Heirs just gave us one more reason to want to come back!!!

Enjoyed our stay at the Talbot Heirs Guesthouse. Rooms was very spacious. Innkeepers were friendly and helpful. It's a short walk to Beale Street. Only issue was the city power washing the alley outside our room at the wee hours of the morning. Per the innkeepers they were not suppose to be doing that. You might want to request a room on the other side of the building.

The parking does require some coordination, but didn't think that it was just extremely out of the way. If you are going anywhere in downtown Memphis you really want to use the Trolley, Uber, or foot rather than trying to drive everywhere. Everything is pretty close and walking is really not a big deal. Once we put our car in the garage we left it there for most of the trip. If you are wanting to get your car in and out a lot I would not recommend staying here. However, having said that, when we got to the hotel, there was someone who met us at the door, took our luggage in, and then rode with us to where the parking garage was, which is around the corner. It's just a bit involved because of the one way streets. Distance wise it's not that far away.

Is parking available? What is the cancellation policy?
Answer from talbotheirs
Memphis, Tennessee
We offer parking passes for a garage that is approximately 100 yards from our building for an additional fee of $10.00 a day and this fee allows unlimited in and out privileges. Our cancellation policy is 7 days since we offer only (7) private suites. If your reservation is cancelled earlier than 7 days prior to scheduled arrival date, there are no charges. If your reservation is cancelled later than 7 days prior to scheduled arrival, one night's stay is charged.
