Everywhere was booked apart from 2 dog friendly hotels. We chose Cannon House Hotel because it had a large garden to the rear. There were really mixed reviews and I was a little nervous when arriving.
I called the hotel to discuss available room options and restrictions with not only COVID but our dogs. The individual was incredibly helpful and gave us 2 rooms (3 & 4) on the ground floor as this was next to the garden and dining room. Thus making life easier for morning & evening dog wee’s!
The rooms were modern, recently refurbished and immaculately clean. The beds were comfortable, tea, coffee and biscuits in the rooms. 2 towels per person were provided and also a couple of wine glasses. There was plenty of toilet roll / extra pillows etc.
To the rear and front of the property there are gardens with picnic benches and parasols to sit and enjoy our fish supper and a glass of wine. Due to COVID restricts the hotel had chosen not to open their bar area but we were welcome to use the facilities / bring our own food & drink.
Breakfast was delicious we all had a full Scottish breakfast. Fresh orange and coffee.
We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again!!
In terms of constructive feedback I would suggest providing the front door code and key lock codes in the booking email as this would just make everything easier and a bit slicker for checking in. Although the phone was answered quickly and codes provided straight away. So no real issue here.
The garden to the rear could be nicer, with grass cut etc and more tables. Feels like a wasted opportunity with such a large garden it just felt a little unkempt and we would have spent more time outside if it was a bit more attractive. The front gardens were nice and tidy but again could look a little more attractive with plants and a tidy up.
All in all I’d rate the hotel highly and would recommend staying here due to the cleanliness, locality and service received.
The room was small but was perfectly adequate for a one night stay. Both the bedroom and bathroom were a little shabby but very clean and had all you could require. We had room 5 at the back, which had no sea view but was very quiet.
Breakfast was excellent and beautifully served by our waitress who was efficient, chatty and very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble for her. So overall I would recommend this hotel, especially as it is so close to the ferry and all the local amenities.
Room was very warm but could keep window open due to people smoking in the garden.
A large group had been allowed to use the dining room for a family party on the Saturday night there is no staff on site and manager did not respond to my complaint about the noise I eventually called the owner as I believe other guests did too , no not expect to sleep, he apologised for the ‘inconvenience’. If they plan to do this they should let out the whole house and not let other paying customers suffer with no staff on site.
We booked a Double Deluxe room, which was advertised to be 124sqft with free toiletries, chocolates, and tea. There were no free toiletries and when questioned about it the staff told us that they 'dont do toiletries or soap', despite it being said on the website. The room was nothing like it was advertised in the pictures and was definitely not the size advertised.
When we arrived there was a number on the door to call to be let in, thankfully someone was there to let us into the property but the number on the door was unresponsive to our complaints later on in our stay. The bar that was advertised was never open unless it was breakfast, the 'beer garden' was one picnic bench and the staff were never around and seemed to hide in the sea view rooms to watch TV loudly.
The decor was tired, dated and definitely needs an update.
On the first night the hot water stopped half way through a shower in tbe en suite we had payed for, and the next day still wasn't working so we had to use the communal bathroom in the shabby basement that appeared to still be under construction but in use for other guests which had a very odd sour smell. There was a key in a strange door in the communal bathroom that led to what looked like a haunted dungeon under the stairs.
The WiFi didn't work and there was a dirty plaster in our room. The 2nd floor (which we were on) stank of cigarettes dispite it being listed as a 'smoke free property'.
The breakfast my partner had was great, however the vegan breakfast was very small and left much to be desired.
Overall, I wouldn't stay at Cannon House Hotel again, although we didn't let it ruin our stay on the beautiful island of Bute.
There was a dead bird in the garden that looked like it had been there for a while. On the Saturday evening there was a party allowed into the breakfast room. Loud music and kids screaming until at least midnight as well as dogs barking. The owner has since blocked our number and won’t respond to anything. Very unprofessional.
Tragically, the Hotel has evidently been 'modernised' since the last photos were taken, and to a very poor standard overall. The resulting décor is 'modern grey' with white lighting, very reminiscent of a chain hotel but with peeling wallpaper and a crack in the window. The room contained no furniture except the bed, and our double bed was in fact two single beds held together with a double sheet. In the end we were lucky: we asked to view another room, which quite simply looked like the bedroom of somebody going through a rough patch. Exhausted carpet, a wooden plank nailed to the wall, and the TV sitting on a bizarre wooden stand, with not even a desk this time.
The entire hotel is apparently being run by one porter (who also does breakfast). We and others were mostly unable to attract attention by ringing the doorbell, so we had to call the porter's mobile. On our second night I let someone in who was unable to get in by ringing, and who later told us they were starting their first shift. The porter also gave us the wrong room at first (without sea view), before later offering us the one we'd booked. To his credit, he did keep our bag at the hotel for us after we checked out, so we could visit the attractions without our luggage.
Breakfast was arguably of the standard one would expect at a hostel, certainly not a hotel. Cold beans, a quarter of a tomato, and a quarter of a mushroom with veggie sausages, haggis, hash browns and toast.
Overall really quite poor. It made us sad to think that this charmingly decorated building filled with vintage furniture had met its end.
