Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As part of our coach tour we stopped here for lunch, which was sandwiches and biscuits for £10 per head. It was ok but nothing special and some people walked out as they considered it poor for £10 per head. Again we would love to have tasted the full menu.

Our Doune Braes stay was good with some room for improvement. First the Highlights - excellent service from friendly and helpful staff , very good quality of food at dinner and breakfast , nice ambience in the restaurant , large double bedroom that was well equipped and the bed was very comfortable, and easy parking. Room for improvement - the decor and furniture in the bedroom is very dated and the dinner menu choices started off being limited and become even more limited when 2 of the menu items ran out. I would have rated this as 3 stars but the excellent staff pushes it to 4 stars. We will be back.

This hotel is a welcome sight as you enter the area, and we managed to ‘do’ the area during our two night stay. The staff were very friendly, evening meal a little restricted so we only ate there for one of the nights. The hotel is a little tired but improvements are being made gradually with new carpets, curtains, accessories etc. The view across the water from the dining room is excellent, when the sun shines!! Room 9 was tired, although clean, and would appreciate a new en suite. The outside gardens were being weeded etc and the patio cleaned, and the hotel has great potential.

I had an incredible experience at the Doune Braes Hotel. The owner, Eileen, is the epitome of gracious hospitality. She and her staff all went above and beyond in caring for all the guests! The chef and dining room staff went out of their way to accommodate my special food needs. I felt like I had a personal chef and staff! The food was amazing and the staff graciously attentive. The room was perfect for spreading out and planning my ancestral journey. Eileen provided me with some resources for my journey. All in all an amazing experience. If you are on the Isle of Lewis - stay here! It is beautifully centrally located to be able to easily access all points in Harris and Lewis.

Can't speak about the hotel, but the cafe which, I believe, is called The Pit Stop was just awful. We were a group of fifteen tourists traveling with a tour company. We were supposed to go for lunch to a place called The Wobbly Dog but that was closed because of a bank holiday. We were diverted to this place. We should've fasted instead. They were clearly not ready for people looking for a decent meal. We had a set price lunch. Sandwiches were made of tasteless, crust-less manufactured white bread. I have no idea what was in the sandwiches because the deluge of mayonnaise completely disguised whatever it was we were eating. Later, I found out it could've been tuna, egg salad, or ham. Maybe all three in one. There was also soup. It had some flavoring, but you'd have to play 20 questions to find out what kind. And dessert were hard cookies out of a package. All that for 15 pounds per person. Can you tell by this review that we were not impressed? In retrospect, I would've chosen being famished instead of this place. I don't mean to be nasty, but come on, you can't serve this kind of stuff without getting some negative feedback.

Place found by chance, very welcoming, very kind and helpful staff. chef present in the room ready to explain the dishes. In general the staff is very patient and kind.
Speaking of food, the menu changes according to the day, we ate quite good and spicy chicken curry, not suitable for those who don't like spicy food, meat lasagne obviously isn't the Italian one but it's really delicious, and a really simple and excellent chicken burgher. He also offered us a taste of a pie that would be made the next day, really, really delicious. If you are near the Callanish Stones I recommend it. Above all, very fair and fairly low prices

I will start with the staff, lovely friendly people who desperately tried to make you feel welcome, well done to them all! But the hotel, OMG, I thought our Scottish hospitality had moved on from the 1970s. Linen etc was clean, but the rooms were truly awful, and we had been "upgraded"! Heaven help anyone who is not! The restaurant is massively disappointing, we had so many excellent meals elsewhere during our trip to the Hebrides, to arrive here and have to send back both our meals as they were still frozen in the centre, terrible! I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, and the cost for what wouldn't even pass as a one star hotel is daylight robbery. I feel sorry for the staff who are making such an effort, but the hotel needs bulldozed and started again.

This hotel is situated in a rather drab part of the island and the outside doesn't look too welcoming. However inside the staff couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful.
We had a lovely meal there, the chef went out of his way to help with my food intolerances and made two hungry travellers very happy. Would definitely recommend to anyone passing by.

Very tired and rundown. 3 twin rooms all very cramped for our group of six. Limited food choices at dinner and service truly woeful. How many times can you ask for something as simple as a drink!
Very expensive compared to other places on the Islands and to top it off they increased the room rate between booking and check-out without even mentioning it - not sure that's even legal!
Go elsewhere

Stayed on a stop off up north.
The staff were really friendly, welcoming and very accommodating.
The room could do with some TLC with some worn fittings and fixtures. The shower could have done with a better clean, however the room was cosy and quiet.
Breakfast was lovely and made to order in a lovely typically Scottish dining room overlooking the loch.
