Detailed Reviews
A one night stay while touring round the NC500.
Hostelling no longer means sharing a dorm with random people and chores in the morning, Hartfield offered a room that vies for being the best of our whole trip which included many hotels and bed and breakfasts; ours was a private en-suite double and the shower room was definitely the best of the trip. Of course, you do need to provide your own meals and there is no bar but its not too far from Applecross itself (though note it is a fair walk and if you're battling the rain and midges it may not be the most pleasant).
Staff are friendly but like everyone else are getting used to Covid restrictions with masks and one-way systems so possibly less sociable than normal times.
A walk in the estate around the hostel is well worthwhile where you should be able to see herds of highland cattle and deer.
Look forward to going back again when things get a bit more normal. Definitely recommended.

We stayed in the superior double en suite room, £90 for the night. The room was enormous, beautiful, fresh and clean, comfortable bed, views of the countryside from every aspect. Tea and Coffee and kettle in the room and a nice seating area. We thought it was good value and we had a quiet nights sleep. Tips - bring food that can be heated up, no cooking right now. 2 fridges downstairs, milk and butter provided as are crockery and cutlery. One thing I would recommend is booking a meal at the Walled Garden Restaurant, it's beautiful and gets very busy especially on a Tuesday when for some weird reason the pub is closed. We had fish and chips at the campsite, The Codfather, which was lovely and ate it on the seafront. As for the room, a couple of things would really finish it off, a bin near the kettle, I had to bring through the bathroom bin. I also think a small fridge would be great in the end suite room to put my own milk in I brought, it's big enough to take it and although the room is wonderful, having a fridge would make it even more value for money. The welcome was warm and friendly too and the guy explained everything to us, would highly recommend your accommodation, thank you.

My family, friends and I stayed at Hartfield for a (pre-covid booked) long birthday weekend celebration - 1 day after lockdown was eased for travelling and staying in self catering accommodation. Communication was great leading up to the booking as there was a level of uncertainty as to whether it would go ahead. We ended up having the place exclusively as we were a large group which made all the difference for our first trip from home since lockdown began. The staff made us feel very welcome and safe, and accommodated every need we had, and were on hand for any queries. It was the best place to stay and come back to in the evenings, especially for lots of small children as they could run around outside freely and bunk in together at night. The bedrooms were very comfortable and warm and having toilets / showers nearby was great. The newly converted en-suite rooms were excellent and provided an extra level of comfort with the large shower rooms. Hartfield was exceptionally clean, and there was clearly marked covid guidance in every room. We had such a fantastic stay and hope to be back in future!

I traveled to Applecross in Feb. 2018 expecting to find the Hostel open (according to the brochure). Upon arrival I discovered that the place was closed! It was late in the evening, cold, and I really did not know what to do. The local Dr. called the manager, explained the circumstances, and he came and opened the building, lit the water heater (so I could shower) and left me to my own devices. I will be forever grateful for his kindness! The room was clean, the shower was great, and the bed was comfortable!

This trip was planned for my daughter's 30th Birthday months ago, so we were all hoping it would still go ahead once Lockdown restrictions eased. It was a close thing!(We booked for 16th and it opened on the 15th).
Our party consisted of 9 children (Inc 2 babies) and 9 adults and we had the whole house to ourselves; we weren't required to wear masks but staff did. Because there were no other guests there wasn't an issue around social distancing, etc. This also meant we could cook food as the current rule is only cold food prep when mixed groups of guests are staying. There was lots of anti-bac spray available and we cleaned up after ourselves throughout the day.
The rooms were basic, clean and comfortable. Plenty of bathrooms & showers (essential after a day at the beach/in the rain). Lots of space throughout the house and outside for little people to explore and roam.
Staff were on hand for any help required but otherwise left us to ourselves.
I would definitely recommend Hartfield House Hostel if you are planning a visit to the area; the only downside to my trip was (not midges!) - it was too short!!

This is hostel accommodation, although we booked a private en-suite room. Our room was clean with towels and bedding only. We were required to strip the bed the following morning. The kitchen area was well equipped with complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate and fresh milk. You do need to take your own food which can be cooked in ovens or microwaves. You are also required to wash up after yourself.
It is particularly good for cyclists as there is a large enclosed area for cycles.

Hartfield House is set back from the bay in a spacious green landscape. The staff are clearly trying very hard and I liked the simple rooms - a bed, a chair, and a lovely white sheepskin rug.
Definitely a hostel - closed during the day and no meals (though you could make cups of tea / coffee in the communal kitchen). I ate dinner, breakfast and lunch at the delightful Applecross Walled Garden restaurant, about 15 minutes' walk away through wooded parkland.
On the first night i had a standard single room in a warren-like part of the building, with toilet/shower facilities along corridors. The second night I had an enormous en suite double room with windows looking out in all directions, tea/coffee making and an excellent shower. Though this was twice the price it felt better value.

We stayed here with my family and friends, about 20 of us. The staff are great, very courteous, and are there to help when you need them. The facilities are fantastic, and so much space, inside and out! This was especially important because we had 7 kids with us. Our family room more than comfortably fitted 2 adults and 3 children, and our bathroom was huge too. The shower was luxurious. The kitchen/dining area was great with loads of space, and plenty of cooking/food prep area for all of us. Everyone loved the living room, it was cosy and the mountain view from the back window was amazing.
The drying area was great for keeping our wellies, shoes, swimming gear, jackets, drying clothes, and still have plenty of space to walk around in it. The gardens are lovely, and it felt so safe just to let the kids go out and run around as the house is up a huge drive away from any roads, and wherever they are, the kids can hear when you call on them.
Accessibility to Applecross itself is easy by car, bike or foot. And then obviously there are loads of places to go to around about for walks, climbing, and beaches.
We're already thinking about when we could come back!!

The accompaniment is situated in a remote location. You are literally out in the middle of nowhere. The scenery is stunning, very quiet and relaxing. It is an ideal location if travelling the NC500. It cost £110 for four adults sharing two rooms. The rooms were very basic single beds and a bedside cabinet and a fold up chair. However they were very comfortable and the bedding was clean and fresh. Towels were also provided.
There is very little in repeat to places to eat, Behind the garden wall is the closest but due to COVID you need to book and it has opening and closing times you need to work round.
Failing that a stones through away there’s a camping site which had a fish and chip van.
This shuts on a Wednesday.
The only pub which is on the river front closes on a Tuesday which was a pain.
There are wild deer roaming around!

Hi there Thank you for the review. We are indeed an ideal location if travelling the NC500 and for holidaying in Applecross itself. I completely accept that it was difficult with finding places to eat during COVID, as with most other areas, but Applecross has fully reopened and has some great places to eat and relax. Kind regards Jess

Had a lovely stay in what is essentially, a large hotel-appearing hostel, with it's own spacious grounds, which has been altered, or designed, to provide a mix of largely hostel style rooms, along with some traditional private hotel style rooms, such as the lovely room we had.
This means there is plenty free parking, and there is a large kitchen area for you to prepare food, or make a hot drink for free.
The village 'proper' is a relatively easy pleasant walk away not too far, and in lovely woodland, and with deer aplenty around.
Well recommended.
