Detailed Reviews
I stayed in ‘haus’ of saron for approximately two weeks and what a ‘haus’ it was! On the first night I thought that my time in the ‘haus’ was off to a flying start after the discovery of knock’em out, a board game circa 1980’s, but close to the conclusion of the game it became apparent that the game was not destined to end as there were three pieces missing. Despite being unfazed by this I wondered if this was going to be symptomatic of the remainder of my stay and that my haus of cards was, indeed, going to tumble around me.
After reading the other reviews, about complimentary bacon under the cushions of the chair, I was looking forward to see what other modern twists could be done on the chocolate on the pillow. Unfortunately, the only thing I received was some complimentary dog excrement on the sole of my shoe. I would strongly advise against a stay here if you don’t like being confronted by dogs.
The flat overall requires updating and has damp issues that need addressing. After using the shower, that was not dissimilar to being squirted by a water pistol, I found out that there were no towels provided!
On balance, the dishwasher was good.

Very poor decor and not very clean for our arrival. Had to spend time cleaning kitchen and bathroom to make them acceptable.
OK for our purpose while attending the OK World champs at the Sailing Club but I wouldn't recommend until they spend time changing the furniture and decor.

Sorry this client was unhappy but we do try - perhaps he was the person that complained about a sticky kitchen floor and when told that it had been washed replied that " there was washing and washing " Anyway kitchens and bathrooms are cleaned between each let . This house was built in the 1950's and has been substantially upgraded with central heaing, WiFi and sky TV etc . It is redcorated every 3 years or so. Furniture and fittings are in good order with he bedrooms being good quality pine beds and units . Perhaps the upgrading referred to would mean the removal of the period fireplace and the panelled doors . Most clienstsare quite happy and we have a good return business - in fact one group are returning in 2012 for 3 weeks

We have spent a lot of time in Largs in the past but normally stay with family. This time we came en masse and brought our dogs with us. The owner, whilst perfectly polite, was hardly a shining example of Scottish hospitality. We were not made to feel very welcome and were left quite an unpleasant voicemail on our mobile telephone when we were 15 minutes late checking out. The grounds are large and pleasant but not very well kept, a little more upkeep and they could be beautiful. The owner's Doberman roams free much of the time, we, being dog lovers didn't mind, he was friendly but does bark at you nevertheless.
We stayed in the coach house. It smells of damp/musty as you enter and walk up the stairs (which are very steep). The living room was clean and tidy but it was badly decorated (a strange mixture of modern and old) and everything clashed. There is a small electric fire but we could not for the life of us figure out how to control the main heating and it was very cold in the morning. The kitchen was fine, but it wouldn't kill the owner to leave basic amenities such as tea and coffee for guests. The bathroom, again was fine, but no basic amenities such as shower gel, shampoo or even towels! These are normally provided as a matter of course in even the most basic accommodation, including self catering. The bedrooms were small and cramped, and we were not made aware that all beds were small and single.
In summary, the accommodation served its purpose but was not worth the money and we would not stay again. Other cottages may be nicer than the Coach House but the poor service and lack of basic amenities mean we wont be coming back to find out.
Anyone who hasn't visited Largs should know that its a great place, just don't stay here!

Sorry to hear this person was unhappy - we have only become aware of this review which again is the subjective viewpoint of one person We let some 160 weeks annually at up to 80% occupancy and have a good return trade In detail Coach house is centraly heated , well insulated and not damp - the heating is externally controlled and if it was not warm enough a simple request would have sufficed. There is also supplementary heating in the living room We do not accept that "grounds are ..... not very well kept" see the previous reviewer who complimented us on the gardens etc. How can two people have two such different views in the one season ? The house is freshly decorated every 2 years and the stair is very easy having a half landing As a matter of policy we do not leave any foodstuffs from previous residents as this has been a source of complaint in the past Again as clearly stated on our website we do not provide bath towels but are happy to do so on request . Thebathrooms has bath nats and the kitchen tea towels We offer good basic accommodation at a fair price - shampoos etc are a personal choice which most people have. One bedroom is indeed small ( but fine for 2 singles) and the other is large - the beds are normal size single beds as decribed on the website We are disapponted that this person did not raise any of these issues with us while they were resident - we would immediately have attended to these issues of concern It would be more helpful to us and future clients if this was done in person and not in an unchallengeable email Some of our other properties are independently rated 3 Star by Visit Scotland - this property iis awaiting confirmation of its 3 Star grade

We had booked to stay for three nights and didn't even stay one night. We booked somewhere else at 9pm at night for the same night instead. Disgusting. Unclean. Dog poo everywhere in the garden. Host didn't care and we left immediately.

The advert on the (--) site for this property is extremely misleading - to the point of breaking The Trades Descriptions Acts. The house shown on the website belongs to the owners and is NOT the property available for rent.
Zion House is not a House - it is an upstairs 3 bedroom flat - people should be warned of this! The flat below, another 3 bedroom flat is called Beech. Therefore the phrase “sole use of property” is untruthful at worst and misleading at best..
A very steep flight of stairs (not for the frail, disabled or elderly, or those with young children.) is not mentioned. The owners told us that it would be manageable by our elderly parents. Wrong! It exhausted them and spoiled their holiday - making most of it housebound.
Facilities;
Hairdryer - an old non-working model was in the hall cupboard.
Tumble dryer - did not exist.
Furnishings - Very old dated lounge furnishings and poor towels (the threadbare one given to me upon request gave in on first use). Considering the “flat” or House is rented to sleep 6 people, insufficient crockery or cutlery or glassware exists to serve a meal to 6 people.
Telephone - mention should be made of the fact that the telephone is a “payphone”.
Health Warning! Why is no mention made of a large barking Doberman hound allowed to freely roam the property’s Gardens. Being greeted daily (or several tiems each day by this dog is not for the squeamish or faint hearted. This surely is not acceptable? Nothing was done following my mentioning to the owner that the dog had barked at my frail mother and frightened her and almost knocked her off of her feet.
I would suggest that a Tourist Board Inspection is overdue! And that the star rating given to this property is adjusted downwards accordingly.
The owners were not present when we arrived - we were met by, people whom we later found out were “friends” - pity they didn’t tell us that at first meeting - and knew next to nothing of any arrangements!
Visitors…… please give this place a big miss - I assure you Scotland has many other fantastic and welcoming places for visitors, this place is not a good example of Scottish Hospitality!

Haus Saron has operated self catering cottages and houses for 15 years without any major complaint .We have only now been alerted to this complaint from jamesa1571 The house in question is inspected each February/March by the Scottish Tourist Board Quality Grading Inspection Team and over 15 years has consistently been graded 3 Star . All our advertising with STB/VisitScotland is subject to their scrutinity and is not in contravention of any legislation To respond in detail . The house is clearly advertised on our website and with VisitScotland as being on an upper floor,.If the hairdryer was not working we were not informed, We do not advertise that there is a tumble dryer. The house does have sufficient crockery etc for 6 persons,Our advertising clearly states a payphone .The Doberman is a family pet seven years old and has met and greeted clients, children, family and friends without any problem during his lifetime Unfortunately jamesa1571 did not raise any of these issues with us during his stay - so we were unable to respond at that time We were inspected as usual in February 2007 and achieved yet again a 3 Star rating

Booked the Coach House for a week over Christmas - it was tired and shabby. Got locked in!! Heating did not go on until 8.00am. Cooker and grill not properly cleaned not were the china or cutlery. It was a chore to ask for towels (we were there from Australia) and the whole thing was a gloomy experience. I note there are no more photos or descriptions of the Coach House on the site. We complained to the Scottish Tourist Board and the owner expressed his surprse! I suspect things have not changed. Poor lighting, saggy sofa and cramped bedrooms - would ever go there again.

Just spotted this review written 6 months after the client's stay The Coach House cannot possibly be "seedy and tatty " otherwise it would not have been awarded a 3 star grade by Scottish Tourist Board/Visit Scotland Quality Assurance two months later in February 2007. This is an independent body which actually inspects the property using trained advisors and rate it on a 5 point scale . 3 Stars is very good . We welcome any inspection by any other body including trip advisor There was no reason for anyone to be locked in the property - the lock mechanism was operating normally Again we sell in the region of 4000 bed nights per year over the past 15 years in Quality Assured Cottages with very few complaints at all . Who is telling the truth ?

We booked Beech House at Haus Saron last Summer by telephone/email contact, for one week over Easter break. Our children were attending the Sailing Youth Championships at Largs Sailing Club and close accommodation within walking/cycling distance with lots of space is at a premium. I was made aware by a friend that Trip Advisor had not been consistently kind about the 3 cottages at Haus Saron. Ourselves and two other families who were staying at the same time do have good expectations when booking sailing accommodation all over the world.
We were all happy with the Marshalls' email/'phone communication up to our Arrival date/time.
All arrival instructions were clear and there was plenty of parking for us just down the path from the properties. We all noticed the gardens were stunning and enjoyed the daffodils despite the snow/frost!
We were all individually greeted and shown around our properties and all questions answered with warmth and hospitality.
Upon entering Beech House it was warm, freshly painted and appeared spacious.
The layout was ideal for us and our teenagers. My daughter bagged the double pine bed as my husband is very tall and we opted for the twin divans and pushed them together for the week!
My son had the choice of two single beds. All bedrooms had lots of light, table lamps and sockets - ideal for their gadgets. Curtains/walls were neutral colours which was ideal as when the sun did eventually shine the rooms were flooded with the sunshine.
The bathroom was basic but clean and i had read that we needed to bring our own bath towels - bathmat and hand towels were provided as was handsoap.
There was a cupboard with an iron and a hairdryer which was unexpected ;plus a few good novels/books on Scotland, possibly left by previous tenants - but a good read!
The lounge / diner was comfortable/neutral light colours and suited our needs. There was a log burner effect electric fire which heated the room up very quickly and Sky Tv /DVD. This is also the best location by the window for wi-fi. Here you will find literature on Largs and the cottage. What i did like about this room were the window boxes beautifully planted for a long awaited Spring!
The kitchen was practical, well laid out and had all appliances needed for feeding hungry sailors. I liked the workspace layout and well stocked crockery/cutlery. There were teatowels, washing up liquid(leftover) and dishcloths provided.
As the week progressed we enjoyed some slightly warmer temps. and sitting out in the well stocked garden(there are also chickens!) with a glass of wine, bursts of yellow from the daffs., and soaking up the west facing sunshine.
There are two dogs; a doberman and a collie; both very friendly. If you are unsure of dogs am sure the Marshalls can be made aware.
All in all a very comfortable stay. Leaving behind the stresses of life we all slept soundly. The 5 teenagers enjoyed the cycle to the sailing club as did ourselves. The views to Cumbrae and Arran are stunning as you walk into town. There is also a half hour bus service with nearby stops if you fancy the bus.
If there is another Regatta at Largs we will certainly enquire here first. Many of our friends paid a fortune in B&B's or hotels or had to stay at Wemyss Bay several more miles away. Others with apartments in town were shocked to find no parking included.

Coach House was booked by my sister and elderly parents for a week and I was joining them for three nights but due to accommodation I could not have stayed any longer. The property smelt damp, the cooker was dirty, the dining table in the lounge had an old curtain as a table cloth substitute and the chairs and sofa were old and very tired. The garden was poorly kept and the view from the rear windows was of an overgrown jungle!
The smell in the twin room was awful and on stripping the bed on departure I discovered the duvet was soiled!!!!
Overall, an extremely poor experience and would not recommend this property to anyone.

One is always amazed by the compliments that one gets for a property from clients who used this property the fortnight before - and for the 5th successive year and then we get comments that are the exact opposite from other clients In response to the points . The Coach House is on the first floor , faces south west and is not damp and certainly not in July The oak table in the lounge does not have a cloth but uses a selection of place mats The dining chairs are pine and are in good order - the two sofas are about 5 years old and are certainly not tired The garden and grounds extend to some 1.5 acres and are not poorly kept - all the houses have well cut grass in front of them with a good selection of hanging baskets , window boxes and flower beds The view from the rear windows is onto the steep hillside and woods which are left in a wild natural state -it may indeed appear as a "jungle" We have never had any complaint regarding a "smell" in any of the twin bedrooms and will examine the duvets for any soiling - the duvet covers are brand new Once again this is the first we have heard of any of these complaints from this client - it would have been helpful if these matters could have been raised with us so that they could be attended to as needed p.s the following week had a return visit from a family who had used this house before -and who were completely happy – but like most contented people did not feel the need to write to trip advisor
