Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife booked three nights here via AirBnB. That was the first mistake. On arrival, we walked into reception to be greeted by a wheelbarrow. Shortly after that, an alcoholic haze announced the arrival of our host from the kitchen. More of the kitchen later. Introducing himself as an alcoholic, our host then gave us a tour of the lounge. This resembled the aftermath of a hurricane, with furniture piled to the ceiling and the bar unrecognisable as such. ‘The room’s ok’ he said. It stank of damp, the bathroom was surreal, and the central heating sounded like a jet turbine. Conducive to sleep, not. Doors everywhere were unlocked. On returning to Reception, I made the fatal mistake of entering the kitchen. I seriously considered getting in touch with environmental health. Empty wine and spirit bottles everywhere, the sinks were full of unwashed pots, pans and plates, and the door was open to the road so any rat fancying it’s chances was well in. We retired to the next town for a meal and an internet connection, and alternative accommodation was arranged forthwith. This part of Scotland has much to recommend, as we subsequently discovered, but the Marine Hotel in Crail is to be avoided. At all cost. The one good outcome of our visit was a full refund, less AirBnB’s handling fee. Be warned! I can’t give the place no stars, it deserves less than that.

We loved this place, but it's not for everyone. Staff immediately stirred our interest by saying it was like Fawlty Towers and invited us to look around the antique 'shop'next to the lounge to await the owner, Morgan. Were shown Room 11 and the 180 degree sea views clinched it. Fabulous.Able to walk outside from the room and sit on a roof to enjoy the views. Were told not to expect breakfast (Morgan did a deal on the price) but told to help ourselves in the kitchen, which we did. My partner brought boxes of cereal, milk, fruit and yogurt to the room. I was a bit concerned about the bed, but it was actually comfy. And clean. The shower wasn't great.. my only negative. Morgan is a real character who enjoys his wine, yet has stories to tell. If you are unmoved by soul-less hotels with no character, which all ultimately blur into one, then take a deepish breath and stay here as hotels like this make memories.

We stayed here for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had booked a double room, which was small but nicely furnished. Under the roof of the hotel, it had a sloping ceiling on one side. However, I noticed that the curtains were ripped so informed reception and asked for them to be replaced. The receptionist quickly and efficiently moved us to another room, which was beautiful. The hotel has a certain grandeur about it, with large open spaces and a big dining room. The views are stunning - I would definitely request a sea view on a next visit. The evening meal was very good and the service efficient and attentive. Breakfast was buffet style with a super choice of hot and cold foods, cereals, fruits, jucies etc. Again, the dining room staff were super. The spa facilities were nice - a good size pool with a sauna, steam rooms, ice room etc. There is a bit of TLC needed here, but the staff were friendly and helpful and the gym was well equipped.

The Marine Hotel gets full marks from us for the experience. NOT posh, not perfect, not orderly, not modern, not tidy and definitely in need of a hefty dose of TLC. However this place oozes charm of a bygone era, as does Morgan, the owner. We had been diverted there by a hotelier elsewhere in Crail and when we turned up it looked closed. I am so pleased that Morgan came out when he heard us turn up on our motorbikes or we could have missed out. We had the most enormous room, with king size bed - very comfortable - two sofas and a bay window looking out to sea. Quirky little jack-and-jill shower room (linked with room 6 which we also had use of if we wanted - we didn't). We don't get to Fife very often but will definitely revisit next time. Thank you Morgan. All the best. PS. Great breakfast too.

After nearly 50years the place has hardly changed apart from New decorations! The views are stunning across the Fifth of Forth to North Berwick . Food is delicious and appetizing. Lovely bar with some nice local beers . Recommend!!

My wife and I stayed here for one night and were allocated room 11. Lovely sea view but the stench of damp and decay was overpowering. Only one light bulb worked in the ceiling lights and the two bedside lamps were too dim to read by. The duvet was the thinnest least effective one I have ever experienced. When the heating came on it sounded as If we were surrounded by kettles that had just been switched on. The bed was so uncomfortable my wife couldn't sleep. The shower is a disgrace ... a prefab from the 60s. The window frame was so rotted I'm surprised the glass didn't fall out. The hotel looked as if it was at one point fabulous BUT now it is well past it's use by date and not fit for purpose. It was so bad we didn't even stay for breakfast. The host seemed a really decent chap though and I feel bad about leaving it one star but it's more than it deserves. My honest advice is don't go.

I visited the Marine Hotel in Feb so it was out of season but the welcome was warm. The hotel is in a lovely old building, full of character - if you want a bland, identikit beige box then this isn't for you. Rooms are large, comfortable and the sea views are stunning. I'll definitely be back.

Stayed here 2 nights in July to attend wedding in Cowshed. Room was fantastic, superb sea views from bedroom and dining room. Weather was favorable so the gardens overlooking the beach below were perfect for a morning meander. The whole place just oozes with character and Morgan, the owner, could not be more helpful. Outstanding!! My first choice if returning to area
