Stayed at this hotel mid week whilst doing a bit of Christmas shopping in Exeter. Have to say I was very impressed, very clean hotel, evening meal and breakfast were excellent as were the staff. the spa, A very well maintained, very very clean, and hot!! Jacuzzi not working or filled but I’m guessing that is because of COVID-19 rules. I spent a good 2 hours in the spa. Will certainly be returning, very soon. Mike

We booked four nights in the hotel’s expensive Castle Suite. The receptionist said she had never been to the room and had no idea where it was. Great start! After wandering around with our luggage, we went back and another receptionist eventually got up and showed us to our room. The door with Castle Suite written on it was open so not visible. But behind that door were two rooms, only one of which was our suite. The suite itself was lovely and spacious with big French windows overlooking the 10th green but was very tired with peeling wallpaper. There were hardly any electric sockets in the room and none at all by the bed. We asked reception for an extension lead to be told that (at 4:30 pm) maintenance staff had gone and we should have ordered the lead in advance when we booked! She proudly returned ten minutes later after tracking down a lead. The bed linen was good. We were surprised next day however that the room had not been serviced. Reception said that because of COVID this had to be booked every day - a surprise as we had not been told during check-in. We booked it for the remainder of our stay but to no avail. We had to stop a maid as she was finishing for the day to raid her trolley of coffee supplies. The golf courses are superb, well-maintained, and the views incredible. The spa facilities are good but I guess as we are Club members at Castle Royle in Berkshire, we are somewhat spoilt. The pro shop staff were great, friendly and welcoming. The food is pretty average but adequate for a quick bite. Sadly, it is poorly managed and mainly staffed by enthusiastic but ill-trained teens. The head chef, Gareth is arrogant to other staff and customers and lazy - e.g. saying, without checking, that the sausages were gluten-free when they weren’t. Josh, another chef, in complete contrast is friendly and helpful and committed to providing good customer service. We enjoyed our visit. It’s a beautiful environment just spoiled by an amateurishly-run, poorly managed hotel. The Castle Suite, in its current dilapidated state, is not worth the £165+/night (10% reduction as Club Company members from £182), we paid. Regrettably, no one has bothered to contact us as a result of our feedback at the time, so this highlights management’s attitude and we cannot recommend this as a hotel unless it’s just out of convenience for the rather majestic golf courses.

I booked my stay here while on business rather than elsewhere because of the leisure facilities, they didn't disappoint as the gym and pool area are very good. The only issue I had was that hotel guests cannot join in with the classes as that has a separate membership. All the staff were friendly and courteous and I would choose to stay here again when I am in the area.

5 Adults for the lodge - Loads of room, loved the fact that they had left tea/coffee/biscuits. The Spa area was a Godsend. The view from the terrace was great sitting with a bottle of prosecco. The only downside ( not sure if this is normal as we had never done a lodge) was the noise from the watertank when flushing or running water.

The view from the terrace is fantastic while drinking a cold beer , the pool and spa area are good just beware of the amount of kids there’s swimming lessons no loungers available because of all the parents watching , half the pool closed for this . Changing rooms were then dirty hair and mud on floors . Breakfast was ok but basic had a full English as we went B and B no cereals inc in this , tea and coffee inc The hotel needs a revamp it is very tired, the carpet in eating area is stained it’s such a lovely view but ruined by cloudy windows of the conservatory ,
