Because of Covid we were not able to celebrate our Diamond wedding anniversary with our family as we would have preferred. So having been admirers of Michael Caines, decided to celebrate at his renowned restaurant, and enjoy the comforts of the hotel at its great setting in Exmouth. Our reception was great all staff making sure right from our entrance that we were well looked after. We were escorted to our room and the young lady explained in detail all that we needed to know. Cocktails in the lounge bar during which time our order for dinner was taken, we opted for the Signature menu containing all types of superb well presented food , each dish was explained in detail by the server. The bread was extremely tasty, and we had to hold back to make sure our appetite was not diminished. At the end of the meal I said we would take coffee and Brandy in the lounge, and we were escorted to the lounge by a young lady who took our order. I did take a peek in the kitchen which had a number of chefs working diligently and organised in a very clean kitchen. After a time our coffees arrived, and I asked where are the brandies, some time later the bar person arrived to take the order for the Brandies. I watched him serve the Brandy in wine glasses, so asked did they not have brandy glasses, and was given the flippant remark that they were on order. He asked if I wanted a bulbous glass which I confirmed. The brandy arrived in two bulbous glasses which were in fact half pint beer glasses from a brewery in Exeter. The brandy tasted good but put a sour note on our visit. I have given the rating as five star, but this service did let down the Hotel.

We stayed overnight, including having a taster menu at dinner accompanied by a wine flight. It’s a beautiful Manor House with views over the grounds, sculpture park and vineyard, to and along the Exe estuary, all of which we could see from our balcony. We enjoyed complimentary tea, tasty cake and gin and tonic in our room during the afternoon and attempted the cryptic crossword in The Telegraph, before going down to aperitifs in the lounge. From there we went to the dining room and enjoyed the delicious taster menu and wine flight. I must admit to having to let my husband help me out with the last two glasses of wine (after I had tasted them) as although they were delectable, I could drink no more! We retired, replete, to our room and sank into the lovely down pillows ‘til morning. A powerful overhead shower refreshed us and we went down to a sumptuous breakfast. Before leaving we had a walk through the grounds and took our leave, having added a memorable celebration of our golden wedding. My one complaint is that I would like to have stayed longer, had a bike ride down by the river, played a game of tennis and been waited on by the friendly, helpful staff all over again.

On arrival from the lane to the hotel you know this is somewhere special. Warm welcome and lovely lounge to enjoy the views. Walked through the vineyard and found the beach. Walked past the shepherds huts. All the rooms are decorated and set out differently and named after birds. A very special experience.

The service and location can't be faulted. But our accommodation (a Shepherd Hut) was weird. Finished to a very high spec by people who had never tried to live in it. A bath but no table. Dim lighting. A kitchen but no workspace. Very pretty tray tables each of which was wider than half the bed. The list goes on. To be avoided. We ate in on Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday was good although I hate the ubiquitous dim and reverential lighting. But Friday wasn't the same. One example, the salmon starter that had been excellent on Wednesday simply was not on Friday. The key point is that I can eat the same quality imaginative food with a Michelin star at Le Moulin du Roc in France for half the price. We enjoyed our stay but we wouldn't return.
