Burgh Island Hotel captivates guests with its stunning location and authentic Art Deco elegance, often heightened by live music and themed events. While the hotel's picturesque setting earns high praise, some travelers find the pricing steep, questioning the value given the costs and potential for extra charges. The charm of the rooms is acknowledged, though calls for maintenance have been made. Cleanliness is generally applauded, but bathroom amenities sometimes fall short. Service is warmly regarded, noted for its professionalism and personal touches, even if occasionally slower than expected.

I travelled to Burgh Island for a two-night stay to celebrate my 50th birthday. I shared the Jane Marple room with my husband. Our close friends were staying in the Hercule Poirot room. We all had an absolute hoot of a time!
We travelled over by sea tractor which made us feel like royalty as we waved at the folk on the beach!
When we arrived, whilst drinking our welcome champagne, we had our first experience of Simon, the hotel concierge. Well he was a joy! We had many interactions during our stay, each one brilliant and hilarious.
The rooms were furnished perfectly and I loved bathing with a sea view.
My friend and I enjoyed startling other hotel guests as we breezed through in our gowns and hats ready for our dip in the (bracing) mermaid pool. It was a refreshing and lovely experience! We were even given complimentary coffees when we came out!
We dined in the Grand Ballroom both nights and ate really well-made food. We all thought the canapés were of a high standard and were very carefully prepared. I had the salmon starter both nights as it was SO delicious. We enjoyed the lamb, beef and chicken between us all too. I treated myself to a birthday oyster too which was delightful.
Each evening we had beautiful cocktails served in authentic glassware.
The ladies' lavatory has the best flamingo wallpaper as well.
Staff were friendly and kind.
The island was beautiful to walk around and we would like to visit again some time. Until then....

Dear hadders1974, Thank you for choosing Burgh Island for your special celebration and for writing such glowing review. It was a tremendous pleasure for the entire team to make your 50th birthday memorable and we are delighted that you had wonderful time enjoying many aspects of the island experience. So brave of you to take on the Mermaid pool challenge, and thrilled that you had fantastic time sampling latest cuisine in the Grand Ballroom too. I will share your caring remarks with Simon, who is great ambassador to Burgh Island, as with other members of staff who cannot wait to welcome you back in the not too distant future. Just returned from a 3 night stay (Friday to Monday) for my wife’s 60th birthday and what an experience it is.
We arrived at the car park in time for the 11.30am sea tractor crossing, which is an experience in itself.

The drivers meet you at the covered car park and load your cases etc into their car and drive you to the beach to the tractor. You climb aboard and take the short journey across to the island as the water laps around the wheels. We were lucky to catch the tractor as it only ran on that Friday as Storm Bert hit on Saturday and Sunday and the tractor didn’t run at all as a result.
Upon arrival to the island you enter a second car and take the short drive to the hotel entrance.

Greeted upon arrival by Simon, who took us to the palm court for a welcome glass of champagne and a run through of the hotel and surroundings. Rooms are not ready until around 3.30pm, so we finished our drink and took advantage of the lovely sunny day on the Friday, to walk around the island.
The views are stunning and you get a great feel for exactly how isolated you’ll be once the tide is fully in. A beautiful setting.

We then went to the Pilchard inn for a drink, a lovely cosy pub with a roaring log fire and Fiona, who served us, was super friendly and always up for a chat. There are two sides to the pub and an outside seating area ( not very popular at this time of year)

We returned to the hotel and were shown to our room, the Tony and B suite, where our luggage and suits were already there.
Our suite was absolutely amazing, alone on the ground floor we had a huge lounge area with a bathroom and shower off of it, huge bedroom with a dressing room and another bathroom with twin sink and a bath at the end of that.
Add to that our own patio area, taken advantage of on the Friday only, and you pretty much had a self contained apartment.
It was an indulgent room but totally worth it.

Over the weekend we dined in the Pilchard Inn on Friday evening and the Grand Ballroom on Saturday and Sunday night.
The Pilchard inn was pub grub and proper delicious
The Grand Ballroom was a fantastic experience, welcome canopy’s as you enter the Palm Court, where they take your food order and you can order a drink or cocktail as you relax before being take into the ballroom itself.
It’s great to see everybody else all dressed up in their finery, men in their tuxedos and the ladies in their 1920’s evening gowns.
The food and the service were exceptional. Every member of staff, from the drivers bringing you across, through to the serving staff, reception team, bar staff, cleaning staff and concierge were all friendly and did their jobs to perfection.

This was a truly amazing experience and one my wife and I will never forget.

It was with a tremendous joy to read your glowing review following recent stay and so pleased that you have thoroughly enjoyed your celebratory stay. There are so many aspects which make Burgh Island special, which we are delighted that you had the opportunity to experience topped up with comfort in the Tony & B Suite you so beautifully described. HUGELY disappointing stay at this grand old hotel which has seen much better days and is desperately in need of investment and a makeover. This was a bucket list trip which has made me realise what the saying "be careful what you wish for" means.

The exterior paintwork has rust marks running down from most of the metal window frames, some of which (including our bedroom one) are not able to be opened, presumably because they are unsafe. Inside the Ballroom shows a botched attempt at covering a water leak on the ceiling and much of the furniture has seen better days. The band who played on Saturday evening were not very inspiring and the piano was too loud for us to hear the singers, who did their very best to be heard.

The gardens are completely unimpressive - no colour or evidence of being cultivated in any way. The Mermaid Pool was closed due to cliff erosion and the entrance was blocked off with a bright red plastic gate such as you see on roadworks - very unattractive. Several of the garden chairs were broken and the cushions for the intact garden chairs were few and far between.

In the bathroom all the soap, shampoo and conditioner are in large containers fixed to the wall with such short nozzles it is very hard to get the contents out. At a charge of £950+ per night we expected complimentary toiletries. The furniture is definitely from the 1920's, and is all tired and old and the facilities are limited.

On departure we were presented with an extra £500 bill, despite being assured by the hotel that our rate was all inclusive, which we paid as we were under pressure to get on the tractor, and then to add insult injury were phoned 30 minutes later to say that a further £173 had been left off the bill. Be warned, a 5% service charge is added to the TOTAL bill, even if you tip the staff as you go along, which meant another £100 on the bill. We have been offered a "special stay" next time. Obviously we will not be returning, and I would recommend the Thurlestone Hotel just across the bay were we had a spa day. The gardens there were well attended and bursting with colour and variety - the staff there were wonderful and they have 2 open swimming pools!

On the plus side the food is excellent and the staff are generally very friendly, in particular Simon James the Head Concierge which is why we have given 2 stars rather than one. Of course the location is wonderful and the tractor is fun but the shabby exterior and run down feel of the hotel itself is somewhat depressing. At the price we paid I would sum up by saying, massively over charge, sadly under deliver.

Dear evil_edna, Thank you for the time sharing your review following recent stay at Burgh Island. We are naturally sorry to hear that your visit did not reach your expectation. It is in our high interest to created forever lasting memories and we are incredibly saddened that we failed to impress on this occasion. Unique location of the island exposed to the weather elements by the sea can be challenging, especially after prolonged severe conditions we experienced recently, and we are truly sorry that the mother nature left scars on the fabric of the hotel which detracted from your enjoyment. We are devoted to maintain the hotel grounds to highest standard and we are delighted to announce that the Mermaid pool has been already reopened and the team works around the clock to pick up on any further imperfections. Whilst we are thrilled to learn that you had a great time sampling latest cuisine and had a lovely time interacting with our wonderful staff during your stay, especially with Simon who made you feel most comfortable, we are truly sorry that you experienced some shortfalls in standards. We truly hope that we will have the opportunity to regain your trust in our establishment by extending our best hospitality in the future and please do not hesitate to contact us directly so we can tailor your next visit to perfection and to make it up to you. With best regards, Vlad Krupa Guest Relations

The hotel staff are wonderful, extremely helpful and very polite. The band were excellent and played music that made you really feel you were in the 20’s or 30’s. The food was ok ish but served very nicely.
The bedroom was spacious but was in need of a makeover. The radiator was quite rusty. And the furniture knocked about. There was only a bath and the shampoo etc was locked down away from the bath so difficult to access.
Two small windows had no curtains so the room was very light early in the morning. At over £700 per night it was not good value. To add further insult a 5% “service” charge was added to the whole bill on checkout.

Just returned from 2 glorious nights at Burgh. We arrived as soon as it opened after their winter break and stayed in the Tony &B suite. From the moment we were picked up on the mainland to the moment we were dropped off at the end we enjoyed total luxury, excellent service and delicious food. Lunch at the pilchard inn was a very sizeable fresh prawn baguette with triple cooked chips, we shared it and thank goodness we did as we couldn’t possibly have managed dinner that night if not! We dined in both hotel restaurants, the service and quality of food was excellent in both. The ballroom is very special with full black tie, flapper dresses and a live band. Breakfasts were fresh, plenty of choice and fabulous views across the bay. Canapés and cocktails in Palm Court were a real treat, every amount of attention to detail was taken. I had the best dirty martini ever. All of the staff were polite, attentive but not intrusive, actually a real skill to balance. Vlad greeted us with champagne on arrival and was full of helpful tips and made us feel special straight away. Too many staff to thank personally but Tash was particularly fabulous as was a head waiter from Turkey, terribly I can’t remember his name. The Tony & B suite was divine, endless fresh coffee, water, turn down service and one of the best bathrooms I have ever seen. I had read some less than favourable reviews about Burgh, I can only imagine that they stayed at a different hotel….. our stay was faultless from start to finish with staff going above and beyond, amazing surroundings, oodles of original art deco furniture and the most heavenly food. We were very sad to leave and can’t wait to return.

The staff, service, setting and character are beyond your normal hotel stay, and this isn't a normal hotel - its an experience. The compulsory Black Tie and cocktail/ball dress in the Grand Ballroom all add to the occasion, without the stuffiness of posh hotels. Service is 5 star and friendly. There is of course another restaurant option or the pub on the island if you don't want to dress up so it's totally up to you if you want to get into the spirit of the place. The bedrooms are all different so check out the rooms beforehand and chose what is important to you - whether you'd prefer a lounge area or a balcony or bigger bathroom or more importantly a bigger than 4ft bed. Might be worth talking to reception to ensure you get what's important for you. My husband and I struggled with our 1930's 4ft bed which was totally in keeping with the room decor but didn't really help our quality of sleep whereas other rooms have bigger beds for example. There is wifi but no TV in rooms, but a lovely coffee machine to ensure a perfect start to the mornings. It doesn't have a spa but a 1930's hotel wouldn't have either but this Art Deco masterpiece has all you need for an escape from the mainland, with an incredible setting and expanse of beach - you could just stare at the views all day long. There is a small sauna inside the hotel that you can ask them to put on for you in advance when you have had your cold water swim and there were no frowns at all when 4 of us walked back into the hotel in our dryrobes after our swim .. or when we donned all tennis gear to play on the tennis court, which by the way had the best view of any tennis court I've ever played on.

Spent a memorable weekend at this amazing hotel. We were greeted by the lovely concierges who transported us from our cars to the hotel. Very informative and friendly. Greeted by Simon and a glass of champagne
who made us feel very
Welcome and looked after for the whole weekend. The ambience of the hotel was delightful. Very of its time and you felt transported immediately. Staff were very friendly and attentive but at busy times were chasing their tails. The rooms were beautiful we were in the Mountbatten room which was of its age and delightful. Beds and room were beautifully kitted out with all you need and beds turned down and room prepared in the evening was a lovely touch. The food was beautiful in the hotel, set menus and exquisite. Outdoors was again of its era. Beachside Gardens and plenty of furniture if a little haphazardly placed lat times, but maybe part of the charm? The ballroom was fab on the Saturday evening. Everybody dressed up and the band was so lovely. We had the most amazing weekend and so glad we visited. Lots of lovely walks around the island and on the beaches. The Pilchard pub is great to visit as an alternative to the hotel but is very spit and sawdust in comparison. Food is basic here also but ok. Pools were closed due to waiting for high tide but could access the sea if you needed a swim. Certainly a once in a lifetime trip for us and would recommend it to anyone.

We had a voucher for use in the hotel as a Christmas gift from our daughter. As locals, we didn't feel the need to stay so had afternoon tea there. Just trying to get through on the phone to book was really difficult due to them ’experiencing high numbers of calls’. Not once did I ever get through but after leaving a couple of messages, along with emails, I eventually managed to book an afternoon after the busy summer holiday period.
The confirmatory email suggested a phone call the day before arrival to confirm tide times and whether or not we would need to use the sea tractor. I tried this but, surprise, surprise they were 'experiencing high levels of calls' and had to leave a message. I was a little bit anxious as I do have very specific dietary needs and even though I had requested this when initially booking, I really would’ve liked to double check that. They rang back the day of our arrival about an hour before we were leaving to travel there.
We had a lovely welcome, what we saw of the hotel and ground were gorgeous and the afternoon tea was delicious. My diet had been very well catered for and the scones were probably the best gluten free ones I’ve ever had – which is why I was so upset that it wasn’t put in the promised ‘doggy bag’ of things we couldn’t manage to take home with us.
It was a simple instruction: everything left was gluten free apart from my husband’s scone so, box it all up together but wrap his scone in foil to avoid any contamination. We got home, opened the box and no sign of the gluten free scone. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was. Anyone with dietary issues, who can’t eat everyday delicious pastries and cakes will understand that when you have something special, it really means a lot so to then find it missing…….well, sconegate has kicked off in this house! I emailed them, I was that upset (plus at £60 a head you’re talking about approx £8 a scone here – probably more as it’s gluten free). Zero surprise that I haven’t had a response to that email but was delighted when I had a satisfactory questionnaire the following day. I filled that in with less than perfect responses and at the end of the survey was asked if a team member could contact me to discuss – yes of course, I said. A week later, I had a generic thanks for your valuable feedback etc, etc, etc. I emailed back and gave the opportunity to respond but I’ve heard nothing.
In short, fabulous location, delicious afternoon tea, awful comms and poor attention to details.

Whist we are delighted how much you enjoyed the afternoon in the most wonderful setting, we are incredibly sorry to hear about the shortfall in communication which took the shine of your experience. I will be grateful if you would contact me directly on vlad@burghisland.com as I would welcome the opportunity to regain your trust in our establishment and personally assist you with your enquiry. We went for our 20th anniversary. I mention this because waiting for us, in our room, was a card from the management and a half bottle of chilled champagne. This personal service was, indeed, a recurring feature for our entire two night experience. Previous reviews have challenged the 'value for money' aspect on the hotel as they point out various decor and facility deficiencies but I believe they have missed the whole point of the experience. The room was in need of a few points of repair and also in various other rooms such as the Captain's cabin in the Nettlefold restaurant, but the whole idea is to be transported back to by-gone eras of comfort, service and other-worldly ambience. This it did one thousand fold. I really did feel like it was the 1930s and accepted the small issues as purely part of the overall experience. Some people believe that at high-end prices, there should be perfection whereas the whole experience transcended any minor observations. We were treated very well and it felt personal from the individual champagne greeting to the constant and ready attention of the staff. They did get part of our dinner order wrong but it was quickly rectified and our room, with it's magnificent views of the sea and cliffs, was large, comfortable and plush. We had dinner in the black-tie Grand Ballroom one night and the other night, in the Pilchard Inn, wishing to experience all the island had to offer. Both experiences were fantastic. I was happily taken way from everyday worries and concerns as I wondered the island and the beaches. This is an experience I guess you can tell I would recommend just don't expect perfection. Let the experience as a whole help you too to drift away from everyday thoughts and imagine yourself back in time and feel like Noel Coward himself was about to walk in.

Is there electric car charging at the hotel car park?
Answer from deathbychocolate
Lincoln, United Kingdom67 contributions29 helpful votes
I can't recall seeing one but I don't have an electric car so I wasn't really looking out for one. A quick call should give you the answer. The car park is actually on the mainland, not at the hotel itself. You're picked up by hotel staff and driven across the causeway unless it's high tide, in which case the sea tractor takes you and your luggage across.

Yes you can, we went last October for our 50th Anniversary. Just give them a ring. Hope you have a great time, a super place, especially if you appreciate Art Deco.
