Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The lodge was perfect, great location and very tidy and clean with fantastic views over the ocean.
The hot tub over looking the ocean is a must. We loved the ability to use the full kitchen as there are limited food options in the area.

Superb host, the accommodation was very comfortable a kitchen that boasts all the modern-day convenience. The beach pavilion & spa is a great touch to watch the stunning sunsets...a must stay when visiting the West Coast.

Simon our host was very helpful & informative. Ghost Lodge is a beautiful historical building lovingly restored. Comes with a very well equipped kitchen, (the best I’ve seen in all my travels). The Continental breakfast is a nice touch for the price. TV/Lounge areas and pool room Ideal for large groups. We thoroughly enjoyed the views sitting ocean side to watch the sunset and a late night sauna was the perfect way to end a great day. Awesome value for money… don’t forget you can book direct. Thanks Simon

We had a group of about ten adults and four kids staying at Ghost Lodge over Xmas 2017 and we had a wonderful stay. The Lodge is spacious and clean, with comfortable beds and a well stocked kitchen. Simon, the host, even got a Xmas tree in for us! Lots of hot water for showers, great pool table and tons of towels. The property is beachside and the beach is gorgeous, wild and rough west-coast style and great for long walks. Highly recommend Ghost Lodge for family stays. Simon is easy to deal with and very accommodating.

This is an awesome house, located right on the beach and with six huge bedrooms it is great for a group, family or a couple to head away together and explore this stunning part of New Zealand.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms and can accommodate seven people. The views from the deck out over the ocean make it a great place to watch the sunset. There is a living room up there complete with a pool table and a spa pool. (advise in advance if you will be wanting to use the spa)
Then downstairs is a huge living area with plenty of couches for everyone to gather together around the roaring log burner. The kitchen is well set up with everything you need to cater for a group. Then four more large bedrooms all with comfortable double beds.
Outside there is plenty of parking, a great deck and outdoor table and walk down the lawn to the beach. There is even a kennel and the section is fully fenced if you want to bring your dog.
A couple of doors down is the school with a great playground for the kids. Across the railway line is the Museum which we ran out of time to visit. You must also visit Denniston Mine - about a 20 minute drive away, and the Charming Creek walkway is also well worth doing with lots of mining/logging relics, tunnels, waterfalls, swing bridges and stunning bush and scenery.
We will have to head back again to explore Karamea and see all the things we missed.
Our host - Simon was very friendly and gave us some good tips on things to see in the area. We loved it.

It's not often that a holiday is planned around an accommodation before a destination, but after staying at The Ghost Lodge just one night, we're already planning a revisit and activities close to the lodge. Simon, the incomparable host, has renovated the lodge tastefully and comfortably. On one hand, I wish this amazing retreat was a secret we could keep yo ourselves, but we wish Simon continued success and therefore want to spread the word. I highly recommend The Ghost Lodge and look forward to the next stay!

We have just had a weekend at The Ghost Lodge. We honestly did not know what to expect but this Lodge exceeded all expectations. The Lodge was very clean and everything was of a light standard, it was like home away from home. It was right on the beach, first night Simon lit the bonfire, it was such an amazing setting. We were mountainbiking in the area which was equally as good. The Lodge is certainly the place to stay if you are in that area, couldn’t fault a thing. Well done Simon

Stopped here on a rainy and chilly night. Simon, the lodge owner, greeted us and immediately got a fire started in the wood stove and then brought over (Simon lives next door) breakfast supplies for the next morning that included eggs, bread, jam, coffee and tomatoes. The lodge, beautifully and personally restored by Simon, is spacious and comfortable and has a fully equipped kitchen for guests to use. Also staying the night was a young woman and her parents whom we enjoyed getting to know while we all warmed ourselves in front of the wood stove in the living room. Later the five of us enjoyed dinner at a pub that Simon recommended, We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and loved touring New Zealand.

This lodge is fantastic. A great place to stay for any group doing the Old Ghost Road as it is about halfway between start and finish. It’s a mansion with very comfortable beds and luxury sheets. The lounges and games room are very comfortable. It’s bonus is that it is right on the beach and the host will light a fire so you can sit and watch the sun set. A great base just out of Westport to explore the west coast with day walks within easy reach. The only place to stay on the west coast. Highly recommended. Great kitchen and facilities. Immaculate and clean .
