Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have played here a half dozen times or more. Positive : It is a very interesting design. Not many (if any) boring golf holes. Our last visit was to play the front nine only. Felt like we had the course to ourselves. Played front in under 2 hours. Quite inexpensive to play. Seniors play 18 W/cart weekdays for $30.00
Negative : typical state owned golf course... very slow greens (brutal) and some tee boxes (white and Blue) are horrible. Others are not bad. There is much "encroachment" from the tall oaks and Hickory's that line the fairways. You won't notice it is you play the gold tees but, the further back you play from the more obvious it becomes. Cart paths are in rough shape. Fairways are not too bad. All in all, not bad value for a quick round.

The State park is real nice, the room was ok, not great but not bad either. The center has a dining hall buffet style, the food is good, the center was clean and spacious. When you arrive yo ugo to the center to check in the process is simple then you drive to where you're staying. The is ample parking and it's a relaxing atosmphere.

I picked Hickory Knob off a map, it was so much nicer in real time! We were on the slow road from FL to Asheville and wanted a clean, convenient overnight with scenery. Hickory Knob Lodge provided all that. For an additional $5 we even stayed in a lakeview room with all the basics including free wifi. After a walk out to a picturesque fishing dock and a nice easy hike to stretch our legs, we ate at the on site restaurant. The salad buffet and hot buffet consisted of plentiful, simple food at inexpensive prices. Ditto the following morning for breakfast. It's a beautiful state park and their staff most friendly, courteous and helpful. Our stay here including two buffet dinners and two cold breakfast buffets was less than $100.

My family moved our Family Reunion grew so big we moved it from the family church's chapter house to Hickory Knob State Resort Park around 1982. At first, everything was great! The food was local, and the locals came every Friday and Sunday to enjoy the buffet. The cabins and Lodge rooms were clean and well-maintained, the golf course was beautiful, and the skeet range was amazing!
Over the years, Hickory Knob was not maintained properly. The food came from a restaurant vendor and was almost inedible, the staff seemed listless, and we began to wonder why we were making the trip every fall.
I know that Hickory Knob has been refurbished, but I've been fooled too many times.
By the way, the last time we were there was 2017, as well as I can remember.

We had wonderful time at Hickory Knob State park. We got room in section 400 which is pet friendly. Our room was really nice. Only wish we had microwave. Restaurant is open only for pick 11-8 food was delicious cheap and portions where big. Big supreme pizza was loaded with meat. You need to book ahead archery and skeet shooting. Kyle park ranger was really helpful and knowledgeable with archery and shooting. Lady at gift store was really friendly and helpful. Swimming pool was open. We did kayaking and it was a lot of fun and I strongly recommend it. We had great time and we will back for sure.

Hickory Knob State Park Lodge is a very relaxing getaway. I've been there on business, but recently had a girls weekend with family and really enjoyed a cabin stay. The restaurant is a huge plus, great food, great prices and excellent customer service makes it so very easy to not cook or do dishes, though the cabin provided the necessary kitchen equipment had we chosen to do that. Peaceful walks, even though the park was busy with a weekend program, and plenty of activities to keep anyone busy. Gorgeous lodge room for visiting, excellent birding and wildlife watching and really awesome rangers and staff. Service with a smile!

I liked the area. Not far from McCormick, a small, historical town. Mostly lake access or golfing, but it was enjoyable anyway. I would have liked to eat in the restaurant, but at least food was available to go. Price ranges depending on which building you are in. You can have pets in one building, but you pay a premium for the priviledge. The only negative is that it is not a good view of the lake. There are a bunch of trees in the way. But you can see it.

We stayed for a weekend fishing trip and had a great time. We were expecting a lot less so we were very pleased with the room. Just be aware this is a state park, not a fancy resort. Only complaint: amenities listed a microwave and there wasn’t one.

My husband and I just got back from this state park and I really didnt want to leave. The maid staff was great and could answer any question that I had. If you want to go here you have to book early.
I ate 2 different meals in resturant and enjoyed both. It was very clean along with our room. We stayed in lodge room # 318 and it was perfect.

Is the Gillebeau House close to the lake? How about the cabins? Thanks!
Answer from Jack R
Westerville, Ohio7 contributions3 helpful votes
Sunnydale, The " cabins " at Hickory Knob are indeed quite close to the lake but are not lakeview per se. Also, the cabins were not individual structures similar to those I have stayed in at other facilities; they were more akin to a rustic motel. That being said however, I was very satisfied with the accommodations. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the Gillebeau House.
