Detailed Reviews
We had never been to Kiawah Island or the Sanctuary. My husband and I have travelled to many luxury properties all over the world, and we were both impressed with the Sanctuary. The resort is impeccably maintained. The room was beautifully decorated and appointed. The staff was extremely gracious and accommodating. We traveled with our two small children and they were welcomed everywhere. I recommend that everyone visiting during covid is sure to read the website to see exactly what services are modified at this time. To list some, housekeeping is not currently entering rooms, but we found them to be very responsive when we needed trash removed, fresh towels, etc and these things were attended to immediately. Dining is almost all outdoors at the resort restaurants besides dinner at the Jasmine Porch or Ocean Room, and hours are limited. We had a very good meal at the Cherrywood BBQ and an absolutely first class dinner at the Ocean Room with our two small children in tow. The Ocean Room staff was wonderful with the kids and the food and drinks were stellar. We also found the staff to be excellent at the lobby bar, Beaches and Cream (get the banana pudding ice cream, trust me), pool and on the beach. Recreation wise, my family enjoyed renting bikes and the Night Heron pool. We did an eco cruise out of Andell Bluff-- this was expensive and just ok. We spotted a few dolphins but they were very far away. The captain helped the boys fish and set up crab traps but there seemed to be no crabs. We probably wouldn't repeat this. In the evenings we loved watching the kids play with others on the grand lawn. The beach was amazing for small children. The water was shallow and there were tide pools for kids to play in. The water was SO warm, much warmer than we are used to in the northeast. Overall I couldn't pick a nicer place for a family beach trip... and none of us golf. We felt the Sanctuary was a great place to visit during covid and we felt very safe everywhere. Mask compliance indoors was about 100% and the social distancing measures in place never brought us uncomfortably close to anyone. Kudos to the staff of the Sanctuary for pulling off the near impossible and giving us a true escape during this incredibly challenging world health crisis.

We came here for our honeymoon during COVID. Except for the crystal clear blue waters, this resort was just like the carribean! We opted for the lounge access which was a great perk.
Patti, our concierge in the lounge, was beyond helpful. She helped us plan our stay, and was able to accommodate last minute dinner changes for us, help coordinate golf lessons, and give us helpful pointers and tips on what to do on the island.
The spa was offering 15% off their prices due to the fact that the amenities are shut down with COVID. We highly recommend the deep tissue massage! We loved it so much we went back the next day for a citrus scrub.
As far as dining- the jasmine porch was amazing, along with the ocean room. We ate at the Ryder Cup during sunset one night which had absolutely incredible views.
Along with Patti, we really enjoyed Ms. Kim, Ashley, and Thomas. Everyone made our stay very welcoming and went out of their way to make sure we were always comfortable.
Even though it is a pandemic, being at the resort felt like a dream vacation. Occupancy was reduced, which kept us feeling safe. There was no daily housekeeping services, which we highly respected as it keeps the hotel staff and the guests safe. We were able to request for fresh towels on demand, and also just left any trash right outside the room and someone would promptly ensure it was taken care of. The rooms have Nespresso machines and we were also able to get refill pods on demand.
Uber’s are not allowed to pick up on the island- this is not a resort rule, but a rule of the island. Cars are available to book to get off island, or you can simply rent a car before arriving.
We highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a local getaway that feels like you really are in the Caribbean.

Dear NinaCNYC, First, congratulations on your recent marriage. Everyone at The Sanctuary and Kiawah Island Golf Resort joins me in wishing you all happiness as you begin your married life together. We feel honored that you choose the resort as your honeymoon destination and put your faith in us to deliver an outstanding experience, particularly with today's uncertainty due to COVID-19. Thank you also for taking time to leave this wonderful review, particularly for specifically mentioning our team members who provided such excellent service to make your honeymoon so memorable and enjoyable. We're all so happy that The Sanctuary and the rest of the resort offered such a wonderful getaway. Even working here, we can't help but have the realization that Kiawah Island, although so close and accessible, truly feels a million miles away. We're so happy you experienced the same. Again, it was truly our pleasure welcoming you, and we hope we have occasion to welcome you back soon. All best wishes.

Times have changed.....but the excellent service is still there.
5 stars doesn’t mean it’s business as usual. What 5 stars means is The Sanctuary has taken every step possible to mitigate the impact of Covid19 while maintaining a wonderful resort experience. What’s different? Well, no car valet, no maid service and limited spa services. So what. Transportation to and from your car via golf cart. Upon one simple phone call, fresh towels and a long list of other supplies are delivered to your room in a very fast and accurate manner. The spa services available are wonderful.
Service at the Ocean Room, Jasmine’s Porch and the Loggerhead Grill is still excellent and the food is outstanding. Every table is cleaned and thoroughly sanitized after each use. Room service is prompt for those times you don’t want to venture out. We did get a memo saying in the next few days they will use a touch-less thermometer to check every guest entering a restaurant.
The resort has hand sanitizer everywhere and all of the employees wear masks both indoors and outdoors.
What’s your biggest problem? Well, like anywhere you go, people (the guests) are refusing to wear masks. Where a sign limits the number of people in a resort shop, the limit is largely ignored. Social distancing? Not so much. The resort has done everything possible to reduce the impact of Covid19. Your main threat is from the guests, but it’s that way anywhere you go. Hey, we all think we’re invincible until they hook us up to a ventilator.
Special thanks to Chris the valet and JT at the Ocean Room. Excellent customer service.
My advice? Go, enjoy.....the beach is wonderful and there’s plenty of room at the pools, too. While apparently the resort is, by their choice, not booking to full capacity, I’d still recommend making spa and restaurant reservations as far ahead as possible.
Have fun! The Sanctuary team is doing everything possible to make your stay safe and enjoyable. As usual, we’ll be back in the fall!

Dear Waitinline, Thank you for choosing to be our guest during what, as you point out, are unprecedented times for us all. You make an excellent point about how our perception of luxury has completely shifted during the era of COVID-19. Attention to sanitation and health that we previously took for granted now top the list of what the traveling public consider essential elements of a luxury experience. As you allude, we had to learn quickly -- but with excellent guidance from a dedicated and extremely talented team of advisors from the Medical University of South Carolina -- about how we best carry out a Five Star experience while also following best practices to safeguard the health of guests and employees. Has it been a bit awkward and puzzling at times? Certainly. But we are most appreciative for guests such as yourself who understand the limitations we currently are responsible for operating under and for being flexible and understanding in what for everyone is proving to be a trying time. Thanks again for your visit, for sharing your thoughts and especially for personally recognizing our team members who made your stay particularly memorable.

I thought the Sanctuary did a wonderful job of providing great service with the limitations they faced to protect themselves and their guests from coronavirus. They were very kind to put a fridge and coffee maker in the room on request before we got there. Anything we needed (coffee pods, towels, etc) was delivered ridiculously quickly. The food was fantastic-- even the room service burgers and poolside lunches. Like, really, really good and worth the price tag. Dinner at the Ocean Room was excellent. Before our visit, the concierge reached out and helped me make reservations for dinner, golf, and bike rental. I don't know what more they could have done! Every team member wore their mask religiously, even the attendants on the bean in the 95 degree sun. I will be back for the full experience when this is over!!!

Dear tnt, First, thank you for choosing to be our guest during these uncertain and unprecedented times. Thanks also for your patience and understanding as we continue to refine and adjust our services in response to the ongoing COVID crisis. Now more than ever, we are acutely aware that the first rule of service is providing a healthy, safe environment for guests and for our many dedicated employees. At the same time, we are doing everything possible to provide the high level of service guests have come to expect of us, even if the way we provide that may look starkly different than it traditionally has. Thanks so much for your understanding and patience. As we constantly learn and grow through this experience, it's great to receive feedback such as yours. It offers assurances that we are succeeding in being nimble and agile in adapting to the current circumstances. I'm so glad you had a wonderful experience, and we very much look forward to welcoming you back on the other side of this health crisis.

We have spent two different weeks at The Sanctuary this summer (June and August). We initially chose Kiawah, and The Sanctuary in particular, with outdoor activities (beach, pool, running, biking, etc.) and the ability to social distance in mind. After our first trip, we planned another because we could not think of a different drivable location where we would have as much success with those two goals in mind. We never were within 6 feet of anyone for more than a few minutes at the most.
We were able to make bike reservations for the week and nightly outdoor dining dinner reservations before our arrival. The gentlemen at the pool and the beach helping with chairs and umbrellas were fantastic: helpful, friendly, and funny.
The hotel is absolutely beautiful. Our family of 5 was able to stay in a standard room with a rollaway bed and not feel crowded.
This is the place to go if you are looking for a getaway during the COVID era!

My family and I made a weekend trip to Kiawah Island. We opted to splurge and get two rooms with oven views, (averaging about 900/night each). It was surprisingly disappointing that with a hotel this pricey, there aren’t enough chairs at either the beach or pool to accommodate guests. We were left sitting in the sand on the beach... which seems ridiculous! If you’ve got maximal occupancy, you should be prepared with sufficient chairs and umbrellas or at a minimum, offer beach towels. It was boiling hot, over crowded and absolutely not worth the money.

Kiawah Island is very private and only for hotel guests, country club members and homeowners. We rented a home and got full use of the resort except for the pool which was a great alternative to staying at the hotel.
The hotel offers true southern hospitality, albeit a bit dated. It's like walking back in time when you enter the lobby and stroll through the library bar filled with antiques. However with COVID-19 and only 50% occupancy, the place is very busy at night and tough to get a seat.
As you walk outside on the oversized deck, you can see the Atlantic Ocean and enjoy cocktails here. Very nice.
Hotel features several restaurants on premises and around the island. Our favorite was the Ocean Room on the 3rd level. Very formal (waiters wear white suits), no kids and delicious food. Jasmine's Porch is open for all meals and OK at best. There are only five outdoor tables, indoor seating is like a Cracker Barrel but you are paying top prices.
The spa was open for services but alas, the locker room, showers and amenities were not available (15% discount for this). Fitness center is dated and not a single spinning bike (no Peloton either). However the indoor lap pool makes up for that and the hot tub was open.
The family pool area is OK, the pool grill is better. Best choice: Get your order to go and enjoy lunch on the beach. If you are staying at the resort, beach lounge chairs available and beach service. Tide comes in the morning so walking only until 11:00AM when we were there but by 1:00PM, the beach is wide open.
Most enjoyable is riding your bike around the island, especially on the beach during the afternoon. Close by the resort is a market with nice selection of beer, wine and snacks. They also serve meals and nice alternative to stuffy breakfasts.
Of course the main attraction is golf and you will be totally impressed. The PGA is coming to the Ocean course in 2021 so it will be busy here. I recommend dinner at the Ocean course too.
If you want a little shopping mixed in, there is a very cute village just outside the resort entrance filled with shops and restaurants.
Overall, Kiawah Island is relaxing, right on the Atlantic and the Sanctuary does a great job handling all the activities and food outlets.

We just returned from a week at the Sanctuary and are already planning our return. The resort itself is gorgeous. It has a classy victorian sea vibe. We had three oceanfront balcony rooms on the VIP lounge floor and I cannot rave enough about this experience. The view is amazing and the room is so comfortable. Patti was our concierge in the "lounge" and she was one of the best parts about this trip. She took all of the guesswork out and had the best personality. She set everything up for us and worked very hard to keep the lounge spotless. Christine and Kim in the lounge were amazing! Christine makes the best drinks and both of them anticipated our needs and we never had to ask for a thing. I cannot say enough about these three ladies and how special they made us feel. They all work so hard to make the experience perfect. Roark (sp?) at the pool was so accommodating and worked very hard. Marvin and Austin out front always greeted us with cold water and a smile on their face. The only negatives I have is the pool area itself needs a bit of an uplift and maybe some routine skimming to rid it of debris and I think bike rentals should be complimentary....but with that being said we will definitely be back!

They are not ready to reopen. Given the room price was over 800 per night I was shocked how ill prepared they were. I went in fully expecting some blips due to Covid and would have been fine with it, but I had no idea it would be this bad. Jasmine Porch was the only restaurant open and it was so bad. Room service was running 1-2hrs all day long and there wasnt any other option.
I feel like 250-300 per night would have been more in line for what they were prepared to offer.

Dear Jonathan, First, thank you for choosing to be our guest as we reopened The Sanctuary after being closed nearly two months. Thanks also for taking time to provide this review as your feedback is valuable. We learn more hearing when we come up short than when we hit it out of the park, particularly as we operate during these extraordinary times and circumstances. I'm very sorry to hear that the service you received at Jasmine Porch and with in room dining does not reflect the standards we set for every part of the hotel and which we strive to provide each and every guest. We are daily bringing more elements of the hotel and resort back into service while ensuring we can do so in the safest and most healthful manner, so happily we will be able to provide more dining options in the coming days. I regret we were unable to provide more options during your visit. Again, please accept my apologies, and I hope you will give us the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

We were a group of 6 couples. The rooms are a bit tired. The slatted shutters to the bathroom offer little privacy and when the bathroom lights are on, the bedroom is also lit. Walls are thin and we could hear snoring next door. The bed wasn’t very comfortable.
We were there for 3 nights and were unable to get into either The Ocean Room or The Atlantic Room any of those nights. Jasmine Porch and the Players Club had very limited menus. Jasmine Porch didn’t even have some of the items on the pool menu available to order. The food was nothing special and that’s disappointing being so close to Charleston. We were entertaining customers and none of them had ever been to Charleston or Kiawah. Breakfast was included in our package but there was over an hour wait each morning at Jasmine Porch. The line for Beaches and Cream for breakfast sandwiches took 20-25 minutes each day. I think they should offer transportation to the shopping area outside the resort since their restaurants are so full. We couldn’t get Uber to take us there.

Response from Bill Lacey, General Manager at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort
Responded 3 Nov 2020
Dear LSnyder6, Thank you and the rest of your party for your recent visit to The Sanctuary. I am saddened to hear that your time with us did not fully meet your expectations. I'm particularly concerned that you describe our rooms as "a bit tired" as we just finished a complete room refresh prior to your arrival. I would be keenly interested in specific aspects of our accommodations that you found outdated, apart from those several design features you mentioned that are not to your tastes, so that we can revisit them. I invite you to reach out directly to me. While the resort does offer door-to-door shuttle transportation to all resort outlets and accommodations, we do not provide transportation to locations outside the resort, including the local shopping area (Freshfields). I thank you that your note on dining provides me the occasion to note that we encourage larger parties, such as your own, to make dining reservations well in advance of their visit. The Ocean Room and Atlantic Room are two of the resort's most popular restaurants. Securing last-minute reservations for a table of 12, unfortunately, can prove quite challenging. I do regret you encountered that frustration. Again, thank you for your visit and your feedback. I do hope we'll have the opportunity to welcome you back and to enhance your experience.

It was with Amex FHR. I don't believe it typically is (but I'd guess there's a package you could book that has it).
I believe that will be just fine…I am almost positive the only restaurant on the property that doesn’t allow shirts is the Ocean’s Room.
Currently, there is still not housekeeping during your stay.
Thank you for your question. The short answer is, yes, they can. The longer answer is that due to high volume of occupancy due to Easter Weekend and spring breaks, I would highly recommend calling ahead to the restaurant you are interested in to inquire about availability and possible reservations (where offered). The only current exceptions are The Ocean Room and Jasmine Porch, both located in the hotel, which are fully committed for the weekend.
