Nestled in the heart of Charleston's historic district, Embassy Suites by Hilton offers guests the convenience of being close to landmarks, shops, and diverse dining options. However, guests have called out the hotel for its outdated atmosphere and rooms, with many suggesting the need for renovations. While the breakfast and happy hour staff are often commended, some travelers have had less than satisfactory encounters with service. Moreover, the value proposition is questioned due to additional costs like parking and the condition of facilities and amenities.

Not at Hilton standards, dated & worn rooms. Be aware rooms are not as shown in pics. M level rooms do not have windows. Check prior to booking two beds as some possibly all have beds agains wall and dusty curtains, despite this beds were comfortable. Due to covid once in the room you cannot change despite any problems. Upon arrival room wasn't completely clean contacted front desk was offered cleaning the next day (due to covid not cleaning every day during stay) but no cleaning upon arrival. Next day I saw messaging in app so I messaged hotel my issues, quick to reply offering to clean room later that day but already dealt with dirty room myself night prior & unable to change room. During breakfast employees handing trash with bare hands then handing food without gloves or washing hands. This is unacceptable anytime but especially during covid. Can only imagine what they do out of site!! Hotel had many hand sanitizing stations and employees wearing masks. Location is walking distance to about everything downtown. Offered hot breakfast and wine/beer Fri/Sat. Felt more like a Best Western at Hilton prices.

Great location, right downtown, old, historic (prior home of The Citidel).
Parking is $25 per night to self-park, or $35 for valet.
We had a suite on level one, bedroom was pretty spacious, but the rest of the space was a little tight with the sofa bed out for kiddos.
Breakfast is very good, but very busy.
The cons:
Housekeeping only comes when requested, and even then it was terrible; never enough towels/washcloths, coffee, cups, etc…we had to request specific items they forgot almost every day.
Setting on cold/high never got our room cool enough at night.
No exhaust in bathroom.
Music at pool could be heard all night.
Would I stay here again?…probably not.

Just stayed here this week on business. The location is very good only being a 5-10 minute walk from great shopping and restaurant on the backside of the property. It’s also about a 15 minute walk to some of the more historic areas. Valet parking is offered which is also nice. The common areas of this property reflect a lot of architecture of Charleston. It’s a chain hotel (I’m a diamond Hilton member so I always use their properties) so you don’t quite get the charm of a local hotel or bed and breakfast. However this property has lots of “gets” that make it a good value. I would stay here again.

My friend and I came to Charleston for the opening of the International African American Museum which had a celebration on Marion Square on Saturday June 24. Perfect location for that! And the free DASH bus went from Marion Square to Liberty Square for an easy trip to IAAM for our ticket time.

I had originally booked at the nearby Hampton Inn, but they experienced a flood the night before I arrived. The Hampton manager herself walked me to the Embassy Suites and made sure folks knew to take care of me. Hilton Honors service at its best.

The hotel is a quirky pink castle with a large atrium and suites on balconies surrounding it. The rooms are large and well appointed. There was a refrigerator and microwave.

The complimentary breakfast goes from 7-10am! It has custom made omelets, steam table fare, cereals and breads and fresh fruit. Juices, coffee and sodas are available. I was disappointed that there was only chemical creamer and vegetable oil margarine rather than cream and butter... but that is a small thing. I got my coffee at the Starbucks across the Square in the Francis Marion Hotel.

Every afternoon from 5:30-7:30 a bar is set up in the hotel lobby and folks gather for two ticketed wine and/or well drinks and snacks. The servers were great and joining my fellow hotel guests either in the lobby or outdoors on the patio made for a convivial trip.

A special note about accessibility: The ADA bathroom in my suite needed some work. The attachment point for the nozzle/hose was missing and the water pressure was very high. This meant a fair bit of water everywhere when showering. There is one accessible pathway out of the hotel -- there is a step on the path from the front door to Marion Square and the valet attendants park up the path to the street leaving me to navigate my wheelchair around arriving/departing vehicles (and basically go around the block to Marion Square). There is a side door out to Marion Square from the Atrium - but no way to re-enter the hotel that way. And that door leads to a brick sidewalk (which is a regular feature of Charleston). I do not ever plan to return because of the uneven brick pavements are extremely inhospitable to a wheelchair user.

Rowan F - Thank you very much for staying with us at the Embassy Suites Charleston Historic! I am thrilled to hear that everyone took great care of you including Kristy at the Hampton who personally walked you over here. The Embassy Suites does have a lot of charm and history and is in the perfect location for a trip to Charleston. I hope that you enjoyed the IAAM, I have heard nothing but great things and we will recommend to our guests. I do apologize the bricks were hard to navigate in a wheelchair and we will definitely look at the shower. Thank you once again for staying with us and we hope that you will come back and visit us next time you are in Charleston!

My husband booked this for us as I love historic buildings. As neat as the idea was to stay in the old citadel, I wish we had stayed elsewhere. Contactless check-in did not work and we had to go to the front desk to get keys. The carpet and furniture both in the common areas and the rooms are worn and dirty. We had multiple light bulbs out or altogether missing in our room. Although I understand the need for changes due to COVID, I have never known of an Embassy Suite not to offer a hot breakfast daily. Hot breakfast was limited to a few days during the week. We were did not receive tickets for the Manager's Reception in the evening that was also a limited affair. No housekeeping during the stay was provided unless specifically requested. Multiple times we waited an excessive amount of time for the valet attendant to show up. Again, I understand and praise management for keeping their employees safe. What frustrates me is that before we booked, we should have been made aware of what we would not receive during our stay that is typically available at an Embassy Suite so we could make an informed choice. It felt more like a way for the hotel to cut staffing and service in order to save money than to take necessary COVID precautions. Overall, I would skip this property and find another historic place to stay. This one needs some work.

It is our sincerest hope that we can get to the other side of the pandemic quickly so we can begin to offer the same great services and amenities you have grown accustomed to. From beginning to end the stay at this hotel was horrible. The parking situation is horrendous with a very small check-in area and chaotic arrival valet service. The room felt like a prison cell with no welcoming feeling due to the large white walls and cold decor. Yes, it is a historic building, but they should be able to do so much more with it than make it look like a painted repurposed horse stall or whatever it was. The couch and mattress were very uncomfortable, like neither had been replaced in years. The attempt to modernize the bathroom fell short when leaving a very old tub faucet and shower head combo. And while minor, it was very illustrative of what this hotel seems to be trying to do when the silverware they offered for use felt like it was they cheapest they possibly could buy without going to plastic. Frankly, a horrible experience and this hotel is a disgrace to the Embassy Suites name. For the name and price paid, I expected much, much more.

Dear robdavisjea, I am so sorry that your stay with us was not perfect and would like the opportunity to help make your experience better. Being the Old Citadel as well as being inside a building that was a fort during the Civil War, we are definitely not like other Embassy Suites Hotels. I would also like to apologize for your check-in experience. If you would like, please reach out to me directly at the hotel so I can help make this better for you. Kevin Eichman

We stayed in the Embassy Suites Oct. 24, 2020. I want to start off by saying that we have stayed in many Hilton properties across the U.S. This was probably the worst!
They put us in one of the "windowless" rooms. As soon as we walked in... I wanted to walk right back out! The furniture is worn out and very dirty. I didn't even want to sit on the sofa in our room! There is a very "creepy" feeling that you get as soon as you walk into the room. The fact that there is no window is not good either. I'm not sure why they would even rent out a room that has no windows... isn't there a fire code?
When you pay $300.00 and up for a room, you expect it to be clean and the furniture to look clean! I've read some reviews that say they are going to be "remodeling" soon. Hilton should be embarrassed that they even have a property like this. It is a very run down hotel.
The staff was friendly including the valet, but that was the only good part.

Thank you so much for your kind words about the team here. They certainly are some of the best I have ever had the chance to work with. We are due for and are in the planning stages of an upgrade so we can offer you the luxury you have come to expect from our brands. Being built inside a fort from the Civil War, some of our rooms are definitely not like those you would expect from newer hotels and I wish you had come back to the desk so we could have tried to find you another room. Our commitment is to your comfort and we would have loved to meet that goal of ours. Please consider us again in the future when our remodel is done. You won't be disappointed. Kevin Eichman

It’s Charleston, I get that. Prices are at least 1.5x (often more) than they are elsewhere. But this hotel is just awful. Dingy, depressing decor, overwhelmed or just “over it” staff, no attention to detail. Parking is $25/day but they don’t tell you that the garage is 2 blocks away. Housekeeping only comes when you request it in advance but they didn’t tell us that at check in. Two days went by and no housekeeping; I contacted them twice about cleaning our room (at almost $300 per night, we kinda expect clean towels even if we don’t expect clean sheets every day). Nothing. Do not come here if you have even the smallest sense of enjoying Charleston from a comfortable and pleasant starting place. Or a spot to return to and relax/enjoy after a day on your feet. Honestly, it’s probably the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. If I get Best Western “amenities,” I want to pay those prices.

My husband and I were staying for one night on our way to va. The pluses: it is a beautiful building that is centrally located. Easy to walk everywhere. The staff was all very nice and helpful. Nice to have a fridge in the room and they attempted to provide a breakfast to guests and many places are not.
I hate to give negatives but...
I know they are trying hard due to Covid but the room wasn’t totally clean. Spots were dusty. Hair (not ours) in the bathroom. When I called the desk she offered to clean and to comp the night- but I still got a bill this morning which is confusing. In addition there is NO SOUNDPROOFING. we could hear someone snoring through the ceiling. We had to sleep with sleep sounds on the phone. It was very loud. You could hear people showering and I don’t mean water running I mean soap dropping etc.
be aware of parking costs - they are at every hotel in the city so just factor it in.
We had a great dinner at slightly north of the border. Lovely staff and they had gluten free food and staff understood what that is - always a plus!

I ignored the negative reviews on this location. We generally stay at an Embassy Suites or Hampton Inn and this was an ideal location for touring Charleston. Unfortunately, I should have heeded the warnings in the previous reviews. The facility is beyond time for renovation. The bed was horribly soft, furniture scratched, the carpet in our room was worn and soiled. The theromostat is so old it doesn't show the room temperature - you set it warmer or colder and hope for the best. There is no charm or ambience in this hotel.

We are not 100% sure when this will start, but a plan is being developed now and designs would be drawn up directly afterwards. The COVID 19 Pandemic has stalled this process somewhat, but we are hopeful that we can pick up momentum on this.

Hi! I hope I am not too late! The Happy Hour if I recall was around 4pm to 7pm. You can call the front desk. We did the carriage ride before it and then relaxed. I don't believe the carriage rides go past 6pm but maybe that was just the company I used. Get the VIP room with free beverages, snacks and the jetted tub...so relaxing after all the walking! Very comfortable bed! Have a nice time!

I remember it being a good 10 min drive from the hotel; however, as a Southerner, I would advise against going to Charleston during the hurricane season.
