Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh captivates guests with its fun, quirky atmosphere and eclectic luxury that blend old-school charm with modern touches. While the hotel's cleanliness and comfort receive high marks, some guests point out issues such as noise and maintenance in the rooms. The staff's friendliness and helpfulness often shine, though there are occasional mixed experiences.
Conveniently located in downtown Pittsburgh, the hotel is a stone's throw from various attractions, but travelers caution about hidden costs and question the value of their stay. Amenities like the complimentary happy hour delight many, yet pricey extras and certain design choices have not gone unnoticed.

We always love the historic Monaco and today was no different. Mr. Malinger and his staff take care of the hotel and continue to make it warm, welome and inviting! As downtown Pittsburgh continues to reinvent itself the Historic Monaco does also. Great walk ability to so much. Housekeeping left the room in impeccable fashion and the Front Desk made us feel welcomed as UGG members. Five stars for friendliness and service for the entire staff if the Monaco. Nice comfortable bed extra pillows quiet as comfortable evening if rest as well. We like to return to the Monaco often and will again soon!

We really liked the hotel and that it was not the "typical hotel feeling" but more family-friendly and cozy with a unique design. We stayed for five nights initially but extended by an extra day to be able to go on an extra pittsburgh penguins game. PPG paints arena is close and you can walk there - which was great for us because the hockey games were the whole reason we visited Pittsburgh.
The staff were very nice, especially Miles and William (?). Can't remember the names of the others but everyone was happy and helpful.
The only negative thing I have to say about this hotel is that they forgot to clean our room one day and when we went down to reception and asked for new towels no one had come even after two hours. So we had to call down again and then the staff would send the cleaning staff straight away and only then would we get new towels.
We ordered room service and wrote that the three starters had to be vegetarian but the soup came with bacon sprinkled over it. Luckily, I saw it because of a slightly larger piece of bacon. If everything had been equally finely chopped I probably would have thought it was something else and eaten.
Would also loved if the breakfast was included in the price and if the showers had a nozzle you could lift down so you don't get water in your hair.

Not quite what i expected from a Kimpton Hotel. No coffee making ability in rooms, no room service menu in room, or on tv you have to go to website where i was told menu may not be current but they could offer suggestions. No receipt given with food delivery and it's no wonder. On-line menu says burger is $19 + 5 (for fries) but in reality it's $27 + $5 fries+ &5 delivery+$5.40 tip + tax. so the $24 burger i expected cost $39. I wouldn't have delivered a receipt either and if i had known i was spending $40 on a burger i would have gone down to the Westin and had a good burger for less. Also they can kinda offer dry cleaning services but only on certain days and it has to be at front desk (depending on who tells you) either before 7am or night before and don't ask for a form/slip to fill out they don't have any. The process is to write your name on a piece of paper and put it into your bag. Of course with no form you have no idea as to price.. See a pattern... To be fair evening crew at front desk are very nice and helpful. Wish that offset more than it does.

We visited over Labor Day weekend and it was hands down one of the best hotel experiences we've had. They were so accommodating with our dog which is always a major consideration for us (and no pet fees! Huge bonus!) and made sure to bring up a bed and they had bowls if we needed them and poop bags at the desk in case we forgot one when we went out. It's a beautifully designed hotel as well. They had a PM happy hour with complimentary drinks and the entire staff provided excellent service! We self-parked just down the block and saved a ton over valet. The food was excellent in the restaurant for a nice dinner and breakfast as well. Easily walkable to nearby activities (even though we opted to Uber to the Pirates game) We made another reservation for an upcoming visit even though our out of pocket cost was a bit higher. Can't recommend enough!

After our first night's stay, we expected that our room would be cleaned. By 3pm, nothing was happening, so I called down to the front desk and they suggested that it was possible to clean our room but had to leave right away. We did. Then, after our second night's stay, we had a do not disturb sign on the door until 11:30am. After it was taken off, the staff never bothered to come back and clean the room. At 10:15pm that night (right now), I called the front desk and asked why wasn't our room cleaned. It turns out it was our fault that we had the sign up until 11:30am and we shouldn't ever expect to have our room cleaned it we did that. I advised the front desk woman to whom I spoke that this new policy should have been conveyed when we checked in.
No offer to give us fresh towels or empty the garbage or appease me or offer to try to have the room cleaned the next day.

Response from Rob Mallinger, General Manager at Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh
Responded 24 Dec 2024
Hello, Robert - Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. I'm disappointed to hear that your room did not receive appropriate Housekeeping service during your stay. There is no new policy, however, and it looks like in addition to your room not being cleaned, you were misinformed regarding service. We provide Housekeeping service every day and if you have your Do Not Disturb displayed until 11:30am, we should be checking multiple other times throughout the afternoon. I'm very sorry that we failed to deliver here. If you would like to speak further, please reach out to us directly. Best, Rob Mallinger General Manager

I wanted to give this property a good review on ambience alone but ambience is not enough. The toilet paper and towels were beyond words scratchy. I am not exaggerating. The paper is softer in an airport! If you stay here, bring your own roll and maybe your own towels. I think they are cutting back by buying cheap products and moreover, by not offering coffeemakers in every room. You have to request one and when you do, you get it. But then you have to go looking for cups and we paid $21 for four bottles of water. This is just not cool at all for a boutique hotel. There was construction outside so it was a bit noisy but the beds were comfortable and the housekeeping was excellent. Strangely, there was a refrigerator, which one almost never gets anymore. I think that money is better spent on some toilet paper, towels and coffeemakers. PS Oh, they nicely offered a very good glass of wine upon check in because we could not access the rooftop bar the entire stay. Prom time! Go to Talia's across the street and ask for Trey at the bar. He will make up for the lack of bar experience here.

Loved this place. I usually do enjoy Kimptons but not all of them nail the right combination of informality/boutiquishness and luxury. This one does. Check in staff was friendly and they had preupgraded me based on my IHG status and room request. The room was spacious, tasteful and beautifully appointed, with high end bed and bedding, fun and functional furniture and lighting and an absolutely fabulous bathroom with a freestanding tub and massive shower enclosure. Could have lived in that bathroom. The evening social hour featured a nice selection of wines and beers and a really tasty appetizer from the bar. Breakfast at the Commoner was well presented though I personally would like to see the addition of a few vegetarian items. Another positive of this Kimpton (for me) was that I asked to be on a dog-free floor and as far as I could tell I was. I never understood how allowing pets made sense in this caliber of hotel. Two minor suggestions I can think of are to supply a water bottle or two in the room (tap water came out warm and didn't taste great) and don't put decorative pillows on the beds adjacent to the sleeping pillows (unhygienic since they never get washed), Still, overall a great stay and a property I'd recommend to others.

This was our first stay in Pittsburgh, and we wanted to stay in the city for ease in sightseeing. We booked using BofA points, and during the booking, the agent called the hotel directly to make sure we would be assigned a room in a quiet location. At the suggestion of the person we spoke with, we booked a corner room on the 7th floor, and it truly was quiet at the end of the hall with very little street noise filtering up. Thank you, Klimpton Monaco. We had a bit of an issue finding a place to unload in front of the hotel as it is a narrow, one-way street with some constructions going on, and the only thing we could do was double park for a bit which was not easy. The valet finally had to help us park so as to not hold up traffic on the street! There was only one valet available when we checked in which was problematic for everyone, including him, but he did his best! We had planned to park in a nearby garage, a recommended option, but there was no parking available due to two major events going on in the city that day. We ended up using the hotel garage which was expensive. It also makes it more difficult to obtain items from your car that you might have forgotten you needed. The front desk staff was fabulous. Mira (I hope I have her name correct) was just terrific, and she called me by name for our entire stay (clearly, she's much better with names than I am!)! She also provided us with valuable information as did all of the staff. I am not a fan of room decor, but the room was clean, the bed was super comfortable, there were four pillows, and the towels were big and soft. It would have been great to have a small side table and another comfortable chair in the room to use for playing cards (which we do in downtime). We also had to call the front desk to figure out how to turn the birdcage lamp off. We were assured many guests call about this so why not either change out the lamp or indicate where the switch is?? We never did figure out how to use the thermostat to change the temperature in our room, but the front desk did offer to send someone up to help. The shower was great - spacious and good water pressure. Coffee in the morning (in the lovely sitting room upstairs from the front desk) was very good although one morning we did have to wait for a while for a 1/2 and 1/2 fill up. All and all, this is a very nice hotel with a wonderful staff. (I will add that while we enjoy dogs, we are very grateful that we did not see the many that other guests did during their stays. We've had too many unpleasant experiences at dog friendly. hotels with dogs barking in rooms, jumping up on us in elevators, and inconsiderate owners who, after all, are really the ones responsible for their pet's behavior. Knowing Monaco is so dog friendly, I would definitely ask for a pet free floor on another visit, just in case.)

Kimpton Hotel Monaco is in an old city building in the heart of Downtown Pittsburg. We loved the location - very walkable to restaurants, Andy Warhol museum, & sports arenas/stadiums. We stayed 2 nights and were very happy with our choice. A complementary cocktail hour in the lobby both evenings, a great restaurant, The Commoner, connected to the lobby, and a very comfortable room. We loved the bird/aviary theme throughout the hotel. It was our first experience with Kimpton Hotels as well as Pittsburg and we were not disappointed with either. We would definitely recommend friends & family stay here if ever in Pittsburg. We'll be back too!

Thank you for asking, Robyn! Unfortunately, due to City and State regulations, our Commoner restaurant and rooftop Bergapten are the only two areas in the hotel that pets are not allowed. The only exception being if they are service animals.
Thanks so much for the great question!
Opening day for our rooftop Biergarten is April 15th and we kick off the season being open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Reservations are strongly recommended (OpenTable) and please check back often, as hours of operation are sure to change depending upon the weather.
We hope to welcome you soon!
