Traveler’s Rest is an oasis for bikers, hikers, a passersby, or any traveler looking for comfortable lodging while taking in a ball game. Located at the start/finish of the Great Allegheny Passage, we have additional amenities for the outdoor enthusiast including a secure bicycle garage with tuning station. Inspired by our own travel experiences, we look forward welcoming you to the spirited city of Pittsburgh. Our building was originally home to A.M. Byers Wrought Iron Pipe Co. headquarters. From its mills in the South Side and the surrounding region, Byers Pipe became a world-renowned wrought iron manufacturer, and built their offices to suit. Full of character and craftsmanship dating back to 1883, let Traveler's Rest cure your “cookie-cutter-hotel” blues. Our bathrooms and guest rooms are private while our kitchen and Great Room are communal. Overall, we're a great alternative to Pittsburgh hotels downtown.

Beautiful renovation of an Industrial Era building with comfortable beds and a great room perfect for relaxing with other guests. The storage area for bikes is equipped with racks, tools and other helpful accessories for bicyclists. Definitely arranged by someone who knows bikes and bicyclists. However, I think the secret is getting out that this is a great place to stay whether you are a bicyclist or not.

The location on the south side is perfect access to many up and coming dining/drinking establishments. Paul and Mary Beth know the area and can make excellent recommendations on things to do and places to go.

Paul pointed us to the Bicycle Museum, which turned out to be a fantastic, quirky combination of art and engineering. Amazing place.

Would highly recommend Traveler's Rest to anyone visiting the area, but would say it's the 'must stay" place if you are a cyclist looking to ride the GAP/C & O Canal.

Where to begin……First off, why would anyone stay at some hotel chain, when they could stay at a beautiful historic hotel with incredible hosts, great location, and wonderful guests?
I have only high marks for Paul and Mary Beth who have restored this 1884 building with so much thoughtfulness. We had a room with a queen bed that was so comfortable, and a spotless bathroom across the hall. We enjoyed the great room with comfy chairs and lots of charm! Breakfast was perfect for us - open the fridge and make what you want for breakfast….we had eggs, bagels, and yogurt, and the best coffee- Prima coffee.
Most of the guest were people passing through before or after their journey biking the Great Allegheny Passage. Conversation was lively as we swapped stories and got lots of “beta”. Finally, there is a dedicated garage to securely park your bike for the night and there are tools & supplies for any needed repairs.
I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else when I come to Pittsburgh again, and I will come again!

This was one of the most lovely experiences staying at a "hotel" I can recall.
I would say that is saying something as I'm a Marriott for Life Platinum Member and travelled almost 100% of the time for 10 years as a Consultant prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Paul and Mary Beth along with their family and staff make you feel like you joined their amazing family for the time in which you stay.
The Guests who are attracted to this sweet spot in Pittsburgh are typically cyclists who are doing a bike trip of some sort, either around Pittsburgh or to and from Pittsburgh. These are not just ordinary Guests, they are interesting, educated, talented, well travelled, curious, and adventurous!
As a result, the times I spent in the beautiful "Main Living Room" which is just outside the door of the Byers Suite where we stayed on the first floor, were simply lovely. Guests shared stories, adventures, plans for their bike trips, experiences, current event discussions, and even played music (there's a guitar in the closet should you be inclined to tune it up).
There's a bike repair area in the hotel where those biking can secure their bikes and gear as well as accomplish repairs as necessary.
We didn't find the washer and dryer until a few days into our stay, yet it was a welcome treat, free with goods to wash your clothes and certainly a necessity for those biking!
My husband and I backpacked Europe for 3 months in 1986, yes the year of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, and got married in Kathmandu, Nepal and travelled through India for our "honeymoon adventure"! For those of you who recall the books "Off the Beaten Path" - that is how I'd describe the Traveler's Rest Hotel.
it's important to manage expectations as it's not a Marriott and you need to know that going in... yet the experience is worth any of the "comforts" you may give up, in my humble opinion (IMHO)!
What a treat and rich compliment to an incredible visit with my Parents, who in their 80's came to Pittsburgh from Idaho for a convention. We were all delighted with our stay.
I can't wait to return!
Reliably and Respectfully,
Marie Getsug

My stay at the Traveler’s Rest was fantastic from beginning to end! I was able to check-in early and Mary Beth took the time to walk me through the spaces, which was great since I was staying the Bunker Bedroom so she noted where the shared washroom was on the lower level. I’m glad I brought slippers just to be more comfortable wandering around in the morning and at night. The entire building is gorgeous — the Great Room has these beautiful tall windows and it was a lovely place to have a tea in the morning before setting off on adventures. All of the furniture was cozy, but the real star of the show was the mattress in the bedroom, it was so comfortable! The room was exactly what I needed for a short trip, with enough space to set down my luggage and hooks on the wall to hang up a coat & towels. There were definitely enough outlets to charge electronics too. The shared washroom in the basement had great water pressure and the water was warm. There was a lock on the main door for privacy in addition to individual bathroom and shower stall locks. I would definitely stay here again, for the people, the location, and for the overall experience.

The location was a convenient walk or bike ride to the South Side of Pittsburgh home to many bars, restaurants, venues and attractions; and was just a short trip to downtown or the North Shore.

The hotel was unique and well decorated with art and found objects reflecting the culture of Pittsburgh and the historical character of the building. It felt welcoming and added to the overall experience of my trip.

The room was cozy and had everything I needed for a several night stay. The kitchen was always stocked with fresh ground coffee from La Prima (another favorite local coffee spot) snacks and treats for a morning bite.

The staff was accessible during the day and I had no issues during my stay. I was a late arrival and was able to find my way without much issue.

A big thank you to Paul, MB and Levi!

My husband and I had a fabulous stay at the Traveler's Rest hotel before and after our bike tour of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) . The hosts are very responsive and helpful. Their large open living room is comfortable and welcoming , and the kitchen has a stove, oven , full refrigerator and all of the utensils, dishes one would need. They make great coffee every morning. The rooms and bathrooms are clean , with simple furnishings. They have a large garage where one can store one's bike and the hosts are a great resource for the GAP and Pittsburgh.

Stayed here for two nights while in town for a hockey and football game. We thoroughly enjoyed the stay. It’s a very quaint hotel with a lot of charm and different than a typical hotel room. The location is great on the south side of town with many restaurants nearby and most parts of the city within a 20-25 minute walk. The owners were very friendly and gave us lots of useful tips about the area.

If you are a solo traveler that focuses on experiencing the destination rather than requiring luxurious accommodation, Travelers Rest is an excellent place. I used city bike rentals to zip all across Pittsburgh and relied on a bike station only one block away from TR. I admired the industrial artsy district and the nearby funky warehouse. Access was at my own discretion with a simple code or fob. My bed was clean and the room was warm. I would suggest a couple of coat hooks get added as it would be nice to hang things up but for the price, the location, and the security, it was outstanding. Support was easily reached by email and quick to respond and worked with me on my early arrival and later checkout. I highly recommend.

My husband & I and 4 friends stayed here for 3 nights after biking the GAP trail. Very clean, grand yet homey, historic, bike friendly. The owners are friendly and have lots of advice about seeing Pittsburgh. The great room is a perfect place to spend an hour both in the morning over delicious coffee & continental breakfast and then again in the evening before retiring.

My partner and I loved staying at Traveler's Rest. We biked the GAP from Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh, and we could not have found a better place to spend the last night of our trip. Our room was clean, bright, and welcoming. Paul was communicative throughout so we had no problems finding anything or making ourselves comfortable. This hotel also has the best breakfast option of any place we've ever stayed on a bike tour (and we've stayed at a lot!). Fresh bagels and spreads, yogurt, granola, fruit, coffee - everything a hungry cyclist could want. I loved the vibe of this place so much that I'm thinking of coming back for a writing retreat just to be back in the lovely atmosphere of this place.
