Detailed Reviews
Overall, this is a nice hotel and I would recommend to anyone visiting the hospital or the university. Staff were all very helpful and the available shuttle made transport to and from the Petersen center super easy. The shuttle driver was especially helpful and friendly on a rainy dreary day. Extra kudos to her! Easy walk to many restaurants and the Pitt campus. Included breakfast was basic but decent enough. Workout room small but clean with the basics
However.... Cannot give it 5 stars.
We booked the 2 bed, sofa bed room for our family of 2 adults plus 2 teens, thinking one of the kids could use the sofa bed. Wrong. In the past, we've learned that most sofa beds are not comfortable. This, However was best described by my 14 yr old as a "bed of nails". For a rather newer hotel, the mattress was stained, thin and should be thrown out. The bedding in the closet was also dirty and stained and i had to request new set (which was quickly brought to our room)
Moral of the story... Don't use the sofa bed
Room overall was clean with average bedding and pillows.
Tv set up was odd, on a side wall, making odd watching angles, and the lighting was odd as well with no central "room" lighting aside from an entryway lamp and separate fixtures for living area and bed area.
The pool was super small with max of 12. Def not a lap pool but good for a few little ones.
Parking is across the street as mentioned, and is a super challenge to anyone in mid size or larger car. Just getting into the garage took a few tries due to sharp narrow angles and our larger Buick. There is a rear small lot behind the hotel, However this is only in use Fridays and Sat per the desk, and that, too is not super large.
(the drawbacks of any city location I suppose)

This is a pretty decent hotel. It is much better than the Hilton Garden Inn we previously stayed in down the street. We initially reserved a studio with 2 queen beds, but got upgraded to a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom suite. My kids were beyond excited because they got their own room, TV and bathroom. My husband appreciated the private bath and corner view with plenty of windows. It was VERY spacious. Our room was listed as having a king bed, but it seemed more like a queen. The pillows and mattresses were not very comfortable, which was disappointing. The bathrooms were clean. The bedrooms were fine, but a bit dusty. The kitchen/living areas were not as clean. The sofa was pilled up and had blonde hairs on it. The kitchen cabinets, stove, table, chairs and fridge had smudges and fingerprints on them, which I found a bit gross. Although there was a full kitchen, there weren't any cleaning supplies aside from a meager roll of cheap paper towels. No dish detergent. No disinfectant spray. Luckily, we didn't really need to use the kitchen. At one point, we used 2 forks and a bowl, so I called the front desk for some detergent and they brought me dishwasher pods which we didn't use. I bought Clorox wipes at the CVS down the street to clean up and left the bowl and forks rinsed off in the sink for housekeeping to wash. Despite these shortcomings, we will most likely stay here again. We'll just be better prepared.
Also, be aware that the parking is first come, first serve. We parked and walked to our destinations, which was very easy since the hotel is right on Forbes Ave.

We were only here for one night to visit CMU. We absolutely loved the proximity to the university as well as nearby restaurants/shops. Parking was easy and the free breakfast was what you would expect. The common area for eating breakfast was really nice -- open and airy. The workout room was sufficient and clean. Our room was well-decorated and appointed despite the small square footage. The hotel also has a handy shuttle running back and forth to CMU all day long. If our son ends up at CMU, this is where we will be staying when we visit.

We moved our college sophomore into an apartment at the end of July. This location was almost as good as the Hilton Garden Inn up the street which we'll stay at next time.
The room was nicely appointed. There was a small kitchen. The coffee maker was put up in a cabinet making it difficult to get to. Aside from having glasses readily available, the kitchen wasn't useful to us.
The breakfast (7:30-9:30) was mediocre compared to a Residence Inn we stayed at in Tennessee recently. They had these little egg and cheese things that were OK. The other savory food was some sausage links that were not so good. There was plenty of oatmeal and waffles. There was also plenty of strawberry banana yogurt too, but who eats that? Where's the blueberry yogurt? There was no fresh fruit and the only milk was a pitcher sitting next to the cereal (rice crispies, raisin bran, and frosted flakes). They had some pastries tat were individually wrapped that were still cold from being refrigerated. The blueberry muffins were not individually wrapped, but were also still cold. I didn't check out the bread. I have expectations when it comes to breakfast and they fell short.
We used the pull out couch for my daughter, and there were no sheets. A sign on the couch said they would be in the closet, but ...
The parking garage associated with the hotel is $20 a day. The spaces are very tight. All over the garage you could see scuffs on the walls from people without enough room to maneuver their vehicle. If you have a compact you'll be fine.
My biggest gripe came from an overall Marriott policy problem. Because there was some uncertainty about when we would get the keys to my daughter's apartment, we booked Saturday and Sunday nights months ago. The week before the stay, we discovered we would only need one night. The original price was about $180 for Saturday, and $140 for Sunday. When we called days in advance of our stay to cancel Sunday they said the Saturday would go up to $295. That is ridiculous. Their rationale was that we were cancelling our reservation and making a brand new one at the current rate. In the future, I will look into making separate reservations for each night I'm there so that I don't run into this backwards policy again.

Hello adamsA215UZ, Thank you for your most recent stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott Pittsburgh Oakland/University Place. We appreciate your candid comments on the various aspect of our hotel. While we are still ramping up and facing a number of supply and staffing challenges, we are still trying to put our best foot forward, but have nevertheless fallen short of your standards. We promise to continue to improve on our operational standards as we navigate these challenging times. As for the rate change policy, that is not just a Marriott policy but an industry practice that you are describing. Hotels use revenue management strategies to appropriately price their hotel rooms based on a myriad of factors, including high demand dates, length of stay requirements, room types, etc. Even at the time you were making the original reservation, making a one night stay, while maybe not being as high as $295 per night, would have been significantly higher than the original $180 due to a hotel's optimization strategy (i.e. selling 2 nights together for a cheaper rate at each night in order to maximize rooms sold and revenue). All hotels operate this way, and I just wanted to give you a heads up as this is not a Marriott specific policy, rather it is an industry wide practice. Nevertheless, we wish you the best of luck with your travel endeavors. Best, Samson

We stayed at this hotel because we were visiting Shadyside Hospital. We found this on priceline as an Express Deal and landed it for $77/night plus taxes so around $100/night. We snagged a parking spot out front and paid with the meter, cost us around $13 to park until check-out. If you don't want to mess with that, park at the parking garage next door for $20. Check-in was smooth, we had a king room and it was wonderful and clean. Check-out was a breeze as well. Breakfast was very good too! We will be coming back this weekend. Great place to stay!

Residence is a wonderful place for longer stays in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh. The location is fabulous. Most restaurants are walkable from Residence Inn and public transport is available right outside the hotel. The locality is also quite safe at night but at the same time the area is quiet allowing good sleep quality. The two-bedroom unit I stayed in, was large and well appointed, with all gadgets required for a comfortable stay. The layout and furnishing of the rooms were quite modern.
Having said all the above, the place does have a few areas to improve. Its house-keeping services is way below par. They clean the rooms once a week which is not saying much but over and above, I came back to room after housekeeping was done, to find garbage not cleared and towels not changed and even toilet rolls not replenished. They could not provide dry cleaning services during my stay. Even after a change, the linen felt crumpled and used which doesn’t give a good feeling. Residence Inn also has a people issue, like their front desk staff seem extremely untrained and most of them come out very rude in their demeanour. I understand they may not mean to be so, but they are just not trained for hospitality industry. Barring a couple of front office person specially a south Asian looking person wearing specks most appeared to be doing a favour to the guests rather than doing a job which requires them to be polite, at all time. The breakfast too was very repetitive and tasteless on most days other than weekends. The chef walked around more like a grumbling matron of a university canteen rather than a chef of Marriott.
Overall I had a comfortable stay and would certainly visit again.

We are currently enduring the worst smelling room in the US. We have stayed in many hotels over the past 5 weeks, multiple brands though we reached Platinum level (50 nights in a year) with Marriott yesterday. We immediately reported the smell to the front desk with absolute belief that they would move us to another equivalent
(but not horribly odorous) room. They did not. They offered to send up a nice man who told us if we would leave the room he'd change the air filter and spray something. I asked him if it was dangerous for us to breathe in and he said no. We left for 1 1/2 hours despite having driven 7 hours and being exhausted. We returned and though he'd tried his best the room still stunk (think fritos/dirty feet) to high heaven. We called again to the front desk and again could get no resolution. We could never in a Million years recommend this hotel.

I understand how this smell in your room would have impacted your stay and I sincerely apologize. On further review of the situation, we should have moved you rooms at first notice. Why our staff decided not to is not clear to me but we will review our policies to make sure the same mistake is not made. I stay at hotels that offer kitchens because I have food issues and I have to say the kitchen was so well appointed. I was so pleasantly surprised. Also the set up of the room is so well thought out to optimize comfort and utility. Loved the stay. Street parking, if you don't use the hotel parking, is extremely cost effective and easy if you download any of the Pittsburgh parking apps. Breakfast, according to my husband, was just okay because all of the food was cold and the quality was mediocre, at best. Also, be careful when you exit their driveway. It is a no right turn, but there is no sign posted. We actually saw a person make a right heading straight for head on traffic. Fortunately we stopped him. Very dangerous!! On a side note, one staff member was not overly friendly, but all of the rest were. The unfriendly one was curt and efficient. She did seem to struggle with being friendly. I didn't mind.

First, the positives: within easy walking distance of hospitals, medical offices, Univ. of Pgh. Staff very nice, helpful, friendly. Very good breakfast options and attentive kitchen staff.
Negatives: room not clean upon checkin-did not smell clean, minimum wiping of surfaces, lots of fingerprints and smudges on fridge/microwave/stove/counters/doorknobs/locks, dirty/smelly/greasy microwave, dirty refrigerator interior, dusty bedside tables. Bathroom was fine. They "tidy" every other day - just towels replaced and garbage emptied. They will do a "full clean" every 7 days. Ragged towels. One afternoon I returned to find my room door propped open in an empty hallway - "tidying guy" forgot to close and lock it.

- No integrity from hotel management
(Had added an extra day to get to city early - under its own reservation number. Airline cancelled our connecting flight to get there, called hotel - person on the phone was great and stated understood and would courtesy cancel the stand alone first night. We appreciated that and had to book another Marriott property in Dallas until another flight was available the next day. Weeks later we found out they still charged us. The Operations Manager Chantz, nor the General Manager Jones would reverse this charge - even though the property said it would. We provided proof and even screenshots of phone records to the hotel management)
- Condescending conversation
(Management stated they didn't believe us. Said if proof was sent, for example time of call to them, they may change mind. Proof sent, they still didn't. We jumped through their hoops, nothing mattered. Management made remarks like if they believed everything customers said they would be out of business, etc)
- Marriott Loyalty or Status not valued here
(We don't care if nothing extra is received from having Platinum, Titanium, etc status... Nothing should ever be expected from guests for it - if the hotel can't upgrade - no worries. But the Chantz made comments diminishing Marriott status, saying things such as it's no big deal, and everyone has it at that hotel, and even he had it. This seemed strange from a Marriott team member to be bashing something showing loyalty to Marriott.)
There are much better options available in Pittsburgh. Avoid this place and avoid problems.

Dear ChrisAndNereyda, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience. I understand you are completely displeased with your experience as you did not receive the compensation you feel you were entitled to. According to Marriott's policies, reservations that are cancelled on the day they are due to arrive, are subject to be charged 1 nights room and tax. Your reservation was already checked in due to you completing the mobile check-in on the Marriott app so there was no way for us to cancel it. We completely understand that things happen when our guest's are traveling and always do our best to accommodate when possible. No proof was ever emailed to the hotel after multiple requests for it. This was verified by all members of our management staff to ensure all facts were considered before rendering a decision. With the hotel being sold out, your reservation checked in by you via the Marriott app, and a same day cancellation policy being in place, we were unable to reverse our decision. Please keep in mind while we value every guest's loyalty, but our Marriott members are near and dear to our business. This is the reason why we started giving our most loyal members gift bags at check-in, to show that extra appreciation. We are always here to help and want to assist our guests with their needs whenever it's possible. Our number 1 goal is to provide excellent hospitality with the hope of satisfying every guest. Once again, thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We hope we get to see you again when your travels bring you back to Pittsburgh.
