Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Old Bell Hotel captivates guests with its unique blend of a warm and quirky atmosphere, though a few suggest attention to dining room details and room upkeep. A majority are impressed by the top-notch cleanliness and the friendly, thorough service, adding to its charm. Nestled in an ideal spot for exploring Malmesbury and the Cotswolds, the hotel's location near the Abbey is frequently praised.
While its rooms are admired for their historical allure paired with modern amenities, some guests note minor issues. Opinions on value and amenities vary, with particular appreciation for the dog-friendly approach and quality dining, against calls for bathroom renovations and a more varied breakfast menu.

Detailed Reviews
We were looking forward to celebrating my wifes birthday at such stunning historical looking building.
After much research we chose the Old bell, and felt confident we had made the right choice as there is lots of positive feedback.
The reality turned out to be so different ,unfortunately.
The Room
The room whilst comfortable was not clean with numerous cobwebs and the carpet under the bed was thick with dust.I am asthmatic and this was bad, thank goodness that i had my inhaler.
I was not possible to plug in the kettle as the lead was too short on the very cluttered dressing table,we asked for an extension cable ,this was still too short.
There was no full length mirror.
The two windows in the room overlooking a small terrace,I feel are a potential hazard as they are very low and the catches sticky which meant on pushing ,I think it is possible you could loose balance and fall out
On on a positive note the bed was very comfortable.
Dining.
We enjoy fine dining and are frequent visitors to country house hotels and know what to expect in terms of quality and service
On friday evening we ate out at the horse and groom ,nearby. This was excellent food and good value.
On offer on Saturday evening at the bell was a tasting menu for £60 per head.
Can only describle this as chaotic ,with very slow service(2,75 hrs) and forgotten courses .The dessert took so long we were just about too leave when it arrived
Breakfast staff ,not a smile in sight, very miserable ,charged for toast non offered on either day.
We mentioned we were not happy happy with the service and eventually the meal was discounted.
Checking out we raised our concerns about the room and lack of mirror etc and the horrific amount of dust and were told "you were discounted in the restaurant" ,and said "well what do you want and then" reluctantly knocked a little bit more form the food bill
The problems with the room were not addressed ,leaving us dissatisfied.
When we arrived home the hotel manager eventually emailed us to offer a free upgrade at our expense of a return visit ,I dont class this as genuine good will,it really means come and spend some more money with us because we didnt get it right first time and are not willing to compensate for your disappointing stay.We were told the owners would contact us if they felt it was necessary,we are still waiting
So in conclusion lovely historic building but definitely not a four star experience for us

A lovely find. Very quirky decor and spotlessly clean. We had a recently refurbished bedroom and it was very comfortable with a nice en-suite shower room, lovely white fluffy towels and dressing gowns supplied. A nicely stocked tray of beverages in the room. The hotel staff were very welcoming, we were even handed a glass of bubbly on arrival. A beautiful garden and summer house and once finished there will be a lovely alfresco bar area. We enjoyed a delicious evening meal served by friendly staff and would highly recommend this hotel.

Originally the monastery guesthouse with a lovely exterior which conceals the Edwardian maze of room inside.
The decor is disconcerting being a collection of the hideous painted plaster statues that churches ditched years ago. A pity that the Muzak wasn’t replaced with Gregorian chant if they wanted to reference the monastic origins.
On arrival the receptionist could find no trace of our booking. Fortunately I had a copy on my phone and she eventually found her way round the computer..
Our double room was spacious but had only one easy chair so it was one chair and the bed to relax in. The radiator didn’t work and we had to ask for a portable heater from the somewhat disbelieving manager who insisted there was one in the cupboard...
Now this was the same manager who spoilt our final evening when we decided to dine at the hotel. In the morning we booked for dinner and were shown the early week menu. A somewhat pedestrian choice - fish and chips, brisket and a vegetarian dish of some sort, but at £25 for three courses and a glass of wine we decided it would do.
On arrival there was no record of our booking and the two young servers seemed bewildered. They fetched the manager who arrived and said we couldn’t have booked as they hadn’t had this offer available since last month. We explained that we had booked and even quoted the menu to no avail. As far as he was concerned it hadn’t happened.
Now, any manager worth their salt would realise that an error had been made y the reception staff and would have found a way to put it right. But no.
The arms were spread wide and he again asserted that there was no menu available apart from the very pricey one which we had been shown and implied that we were making it up.
Needless to say we walked out and ate very well at a local Italian place.
Not a good way to end our four nights at the Bell.
Now to other matters. It’s clearly set up for weddings and there were ‘functions’ every evening. Some guests were staying for a night or two and the loud and unpleasant yelling in the dining room at breakfast didn’t make for a peaceful meal. So be warned.
The serving staff in the dining room were young and very pleasant and the breakfast menu varied and expertly cooked.
So - not a place we would return and not good value for money.

Stayed for one night the room cost 245 pounds at 10pm fire alarm went off these things happen didn’t mind that.
Went back inside at 10:30pm tried to sleep but bar was serving people after final orders so all we could here was loud laughing and shouting until 1am we tried calling reception twice they didn’t pick up or answer when I complained this morning they didn’t even apologise or off so much a cup of tea.
Don’t bother staying here it’s like staying above a noisy pub and it’s very expensive for a noisy pub.
Food was superb drinks were superb waiting staff are very polite and good with service the manager should be re trained as he doesn’t care about his customers quality of sleep which a hotel is designed for comfort and sleep.
I would only come back for dinner and drinks but no way stay again £245 for accommodation and I slept for 4 hours due to noise completely unacceptable

The best thing about this hotel is the staff who were unfailingly helpful and cheerful. We stayed during the heatwave and the building has no air-conditioning, so it must have been very wearing to deal with a constant stream of clients and keep smiling. We're aware of the difficulties the hospitality industry is currently facing and feel the hotel owners are very fortunate with their team.
The hotel itself however was disappointing. We'd booked one of the more expensive Classic Rooms (£330 for bed and breakfast) and were shown up the stairs to Room 5. This was spacious but spartan. The floors were wooden with no rugs, there were no pictures and no full length mirror. It was also dark (we had to keep the electric light on), with just the one side window looking out onto the roof with the noise of the ventilator extractor. The bathroom was small (no window) and needs both shelving and a grab rail on the wall for climbing out of the shower.
We had dinner that evening in the "Saints and Sinners" restaurant (decorated with religious statuettes) and the meal proved a mixed bag The lobster was delicious but the pasta stodgy and there was only one option in each course for our vegetarian guest, who would have appreciated a choice. The wines were first class, but the wine list is amateurish - flowery prose but no facts as to vintage or country of origin. If one is being asked to pay £40 for a Pinot Noir then one really does need to know if it comes from Chile or California. Breakfast the next morning was very good, although we'd have liked to have had it in the morning air on the terrace rather than inside in the hot dining room.
The most frustrating thing of all was the noise level throughout the hotel (and not just the yapping dogs who are allowed into the restaurant at meal times). There is non-stop piped muzak which we were told is impossible to either turn down or turn off. Conversation at meal times proved really difficult and eventually our elderly dinner guest gave up.
We had high hopes of The Old Bell, but left feeling that it definitely wasn't value for money and that we were unlikely to return.

We have a very mixed review of the old bell. We booked for a 2 night staycation away to celebrate a birthday and valentines. Firstly the positives, the food is amazing and we loved the breakfast and dinner options- I have a gluten intolerance and the staff were very accommodating. However, unfortunately there were a couple of aspects that were not great / expected of a hotel with 4 star rating. When we arrived we were shown immediately to our room but had no introduction to other aspects of the hotel and as such we only discovered the nice lounge / bar area on the last day. I would advise that when reception welcome guests they let guests know what is available at the hotel so people can make the most of their stay. We booked a cosy room and booked our dog into the hotel to stay with us. Whilst the hotel are very dog friendly and we appreciated all the accommodating aspects they have for dog owners ( such a treats, water bowls and a separate nice area of the restaurant) when we arrived there was a mix up and despite the added payment for our dog the bowls / bed weren’t ready in the room but once we explained, this was resolved. We also had a mix up where we were told a taxi was booked for our celebration birthday meal ( a restaurant away from the hotel) but after waiting 15 mins outside the taxi didn’t arrive, the staff rebooked one so we ended up about 45 mins late to our booking. We asked to speak to the manager but no manager was on site that night or the next day, so another member of staff spoke to us and dealt with the situation very professionally of which we were grateful for. On arrival we noticed that there was building work going on but the Monday morning ( 9am) and through the day all we could hear was hammering and drilling under and outside our room, and the following morning the same again drilling and hammering. We understand building work is a must but maybe give us a heads up as we would have rather paid more for a different room to be in a different part of the hotel so that we could relax without the noise. The room itself was also very basic, no bathrobes as the website / amenities on trip advisor lists and not like it looked on the website. Overall we made the most of our stay and the staff were great in resolving everything and were polite and nice but for us we just wanted to have an easy going stay without having to deal with multiple challenges.

This was our first visit since the new ownership and despite leaving several messages, no one ever called back to make a booking. We decided to turn up for a drink anyway. We asked at reception if it was ok to go through to one of the rooms for a drink, lady on reception was rather stressed and not very welcoming, we actually felt like a hindrance. We found somewhere to sit but one of the chairs was in the path of the staff and caused an obstruction. Drinks arrived promptly and were pleasant. We asked for a bar snack which we felt was very small and overpriced and very little choice. Afternoon tea looked good. Just a small aside as this is purely a personal point but didn’t like the jeans and check shirt the waiting staff were wearing. All in all staff could do with being more cheerful, fabulous building, beautiful place but not sure I would visit again. Shame

Just stopped off for tea/coffee and pain au chocolat and was very disappointed. It was so good under the new management to start with and the staff were very efficient. After asking at reception, we were very brusquely told to sit and wait which we did. We waited several minufes but nothing happened then I went and found a waitress and placed our order. It was ages coming, the table had liquid spilt on it and loads of crumbs. Nothing was wiped off and given our order, no napkin or knife came with the pain au chocolat. I asked for them and nothing happened so asked another waitress who gave me a napkin. We had planned to go back for a lunch but we immediately changed our mind. Other people were left hanging about and there has been no training of staff at all. Why no teacakes or scones and why no training for staff. Our last visit there till we hear that it has improved.

We stayed at the Old Bell Hotel for one night and had dinner with them celebrating Burns night. Firstly, there was a minor issue with the shower in our room and the wonderful and very friendly Elaine from reception immediately changed (and upgraded!) Our room and gave us a bottle of Prosecco to apologise for the room swap. She was so helpful and really went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay.
Secondly, the food served during the Burns night dinner was outstanding. I am a vegetarian with Crohns disease so catering for me is not an easy task. Oscar our waiter was beyond brilliant and sorted out vegetarian versions of the dishes and a substitute dessert. I cannot express my gratitude to him and the chefs for making our night so special.
I cannot recommend the Old Bell highly enough, the building, rooms and location are beautiful and steeped with history but the staff really made the stay 10/10.
We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Helen and the team did a stellar job organising and facilitating a very memorable 80th birthday party. This included an overnight stay for 17 people, afternoon drinks reception and an evening meal in the Library room. We chose the Old Bell as it’s bursting with character, has individual and unique rooms with grand/funky decor (but not stuffy) and excellent food and drink. The team were so welcoming and catered for needs (including 1 person with limited mobility). We had a ‘moment’ where we realised there possibly wasn’t enough room in the library for the entertainment we’d booked before the meal - Helen took this in her stride and organised a further entertaining space at very last minute, huge thanks for this flexibility. All attendees of party aged 7-80 loved their stay.
