Reviews summary

Pettifers Freehouse Hotel has garnered positive feedback for its clean, comfortable, and spacious rooms, though a few patrons have noted difficulties with fulfilling special requests. The hotel's amenities, such as good food and cozy rooms, are often highlighted, and the service is regularly commended for its friendliness, despite the occasional oversight.
While the quaint atmosphere is appreciated, suggestions for updates to enhance the ambiance have been made. Although the overall cleanliness receives high praise, some guests feel the hotel's value does not match the cost, pointing to overpriced features.

Detailed Reviews
We were based in one of the cottage rooms just opposite reception and it was just perfect as we had pour two dogs with us and boy, did it rain!?!?! We and they were made to feel really at home though, from the moment we entered reception to be met by Lotti. A Sandwich in the bar area was very pleasant and then off for a dog walk, with instructions on where to go. Minor irritation in the cottage, was that the show in the bath was fixed to the wall, which meant the dogs had a bath both nights, but at least they were clean!! Dogs are welcome with you in the bar and "Snug" to eat, where breakfast was wonderful (Eggs Benedict would you believe.....thanks Chef Rob) and the service (including water and sausages for dogs) from the lovely and efficient Daniel. The Hotel is a little tired, but dogs would not be welcome in a pristine, newly decorated building, so for us, it was great value and we will definitely return.
Thanks to all who made our stay so pleasant over two days of the heaviest rain ever!!!!

Our small group of walkers stayed at Pettifers for a long weekend. We could not fault it. The staff were so friendly - Mauro served us at breakfast and dinner and was always smiling and helpful. The meals were excellent - I really enjoyed the granola and fruit compote at breakfast along with the eggs benedict. At dinner we enjoyed the table d'hote menu and the house red Chilean Merlot was very drinkable and affordable.
The hotel made us feel very welcome and after a day's walking in the beautiful Cotswold countryside we were very happy to return to the hotel for a shower and relax in the garden with a nice G & T! It is good to find a dog friendly hotel which really does cater for our canine friends.
We are already talking about our walking programme for our next stay at the hotel.

From the minute I walked in I was welcomed in a professional, friendly and unobtrusive way.
Immediately relaxing with its lovely lounge, cosy bar, brilliant garden and great looking menu I felt at home.
All of the staff were genuinely interested and keen to help may my stay as comfortable and hassle free as they could. The owners are hands on, attentive and treated me (and my dog) like special guests.
Turns out the menu didn't just look good on paper but was delicious from top to bottom. A nice mix of starters and mains that I had trouble choosing from as I wanted to try everything.
Even the chefs were friendly, interested and wanted to make sure I was happy with everything.
My room was great. Light, airy quite and relaxing with all the usual handy bits and bobs to hand.
A piping hot shower with the force of niagara falls just complimented the fact that in this Hotel everything just, well...works seamlessly and nothing is too much trouble.
I cannot recommend Pettifers highly enough - it has the lot and kept a smile on my face.
Returning is a no brainer

I'll try and keep this concise, lots of small things that added up to a very poor experience. Our room: no drinking glasses, extractor fan did not work, blinds controls broken, door damaged and fire panel exposed (hope it was not asbestos), paint flaking, radiators made a grinding noise all night, cheap thin economy toilet paper which was unhygienic to use, bed was comfortable. In addition our friends experience of their rooms were: No heating, no hot water, when restored hot water temperature fluctuated from too hot to cold, toilet took an age to refill. General: Side door lock was broken and the door could not be closed properly. This meant the internal doors banged all night and the bar area had a cold draft blowing through it together with leafs. Not enough seating in the bar area. However the bar staff recommended The Potting Shed pub next door which sold good beers and wines and was much more comfortable. Thanks for that recommendation. We did not bother with the hotel bar after that. Dinner was inedible and we left it. No comment when the plates were cleared away so this must be a common event. Full English Breakfast was Small English Breakfast. We were served child portions. The "Large Car Park" was not large enough. Cars were double parked. The lack of staff was very apparent as service was very slow. The Friendly staff that were there worked very hard. This establishment is way too expensive for its standard of quality. However, if some basic maintenance was carried out on this run down building it would make a difference and it could be good and deliver value for money.

Stayed here for 2 nights. The staff were very friendly and service in the dining room was excellent. The reception, bar and restaurant area is nicely decorated and furnished but once you head upstairs to the rooms, the whole place is in desperate need of updating. In particular the bathroom was scruffy and very tired looking. Towels and bed linen however were of good quality. We ate in the restaurant once and the food was very good although the large plate serving of charcuterie needs improving and was very poor value for the price.

My partner has serious mobility problems and is 84 years old, so when I made the booking with Pettifers I requested in writing a room with a walk-in shower and on the ground or first floor. I asked for confirmation of this a few days before we were due to arrive, to be told we could have a “coach house room” if one became available. This was not offered to us on arrival.. At no time was it made clear that we could not have a walk in shower. We were given a room which required us to take three separate flights of stairs and which had a shower over bath. Indeed the room was the least accessible in the whole hotel and the shower was so bad it was little more than a trickle. The hotel was very quiet with few guests .The food in the hotel was good but we were the only diners for our Sunday evening meal and consequently what atmosphere there was was was lacking to say the least!! We will not be returning to Pettifers and our experience was a great disappointment having travelled there from Lancashire.

It is very sad for me to write a poor review of Pettifers ( formerly The Mayfield ) which we as a family over 4 generations have visited for nearly 40 years . We have always so enjoyed being there and appreciated the buildings , the garden the staff friendliness and the meals On this occasion we all felt very disappointed and let down When we booked we did notice on the website mention of their Covid policy, but with no restrictions currently in the country assumed it hadn't been updated. But we found out on our 3 night stay that rooms are not made up during your stay, as no staff are allowed to enter However on one occasion Frank ,the owner, came into our room for a chat , and to let us know a plumber would be sorting out the shower that day ,he was followed by the plumber who came in to see what needed doing, and he then spent the afternoon in our room installing a new shower fitting, which is in total contradiction to the Covid policy they are operating Our second problem was the wait time for meals in the dining room, having young children with us we had to take games with us to pass the time away dinner was generally an hours wait from ordering. On our last day we arrived for breakfast at 9am our orders were taken very promptly and breakfast finally arrived just after 10.15 . The young lady was really apologetic and embarrassed but was unable to offer any explanation I do understand that meals are cooked to order and are always fresh and very enjoyable , but wait times are appalling. Lastly, when we booked there was no dinner menu on the website and it was disappointing to be charged 10% service charge for everything even drinks served at the bar, their menu on the Facebook page has no mention of this although there is now a menu on Pettifers website which does confirm it although says discretionary.. I did try to discuss these points with Frank on our departure but he was not available . I have since sent 3 emails to him with these issues detailed but he has chosen not to respond
It is very sad for me to write this but we shall not return

A birthday treat for my wife. The hell it was!
Telephoned direct and enquired about a Saturday night stay, explaining as a well needed break and birthday surprise for my wife. Paid by card there and then asking price £126.00 for the one night in a larger double room.
Given room 14.
Lady at reception explained there was a noisy dehumidier in the room next door to us as it was damp and she would come up and switch it off. Still going...
The room was very cold, radiater was off, we sat on the bed for a bit and looked at one another thinking the same thing. It was really poor and for the amount of money, it was called "taking the piss".
Several screws and nails sticking out the wall.
Carpet not fitting, thread sticking up all round the edges.
Dirt smears on the walls.
I paced the actual room size (excl the hall to the entrance door) and roughly 8ft by 12ft. LOL as they say
The ensuite was another disappointment, public hair on the mirror, dirt round the shower knob, sink tap not cleaned 100 percent, door with bleach splashed all over it, filth round edges and skirting... £126.00 a night remember!
At no stage did anyone say "oh by the way, happy birthday".
Nice food and service in dining room. After food I ordered two coffees and two brandies. Coffee arrived but no brandy - "sorry i forgot about it and I'm not sure if was added to the hill or not" she said?! After this was told can't add the dinner bill to hotel bill to pay all extras in one go, had to pay straight away as it was explained a separate business.
We left at checkout time in the morning and no one in reception area, left the key on the counter, no one spoke. I drove home thinking of all the places we could have stayed for that money.
Wow!

We chose to have lunch here because of the good reviews. First the good: my Aubergine Katsu Curry followed by Salted Caramel Affogato were delicious, and the service was good. The not-so-good: my wife's wine glass had lipstick on it (it was changed straight away when pointed out). The table was sticky; I had to prise my slate table mat off the table to move it, and the edges of the table looked like they had a build up and hadn't been cleaned properly for some time. I should mention that this was supposed to be part of a romantic weekend so I didn't want to complain about anything else after the wine glass lipstick. The background music seemed to include some thumping tracks that were inappropriate for the setting. Something lighter or classical might have been better - but that's just my opinion of course. My wife wanted it to be nice as well, so I didn't find out until we'd paid and left that she was disappointed with the roast chicken thighs and chocolate mousse, although I didn't get much detail and didn't want to press her. She said the mousse was a little runny and small considering it was £7.95. Individually these complaints aren't that bad, but the reputation and reviews weren't borne out by our experience.

The hotel is fab IF you have a nice room. We had booked superior and were allocated (accessible) refurbished large room 29 in the courtyard on the phone but when we got there we were given the keys to room 7 and told it was a lovely superior room with garden views. It was not - it was an old fashioned (complete with artex and electric trunking) room with very little light as the en suite had been incorporated into the room at the window end cutting off the light. The shower was an electric one over the bath and the grout was brown! We went straight away and asked to be moved. we were then given the original room 29 which was lovely.
They have won the best breakfast award from best western and it was very good. The evening meal in the restaurant was fab too. The bar staff couldn't be more helpful and personable and the wine list was superb and inexpensive.
except for the false start on the room this would have been 5 star review *****
loads of tourist stuff in the area is only open april - october hence the deal we had up to end march.
by the way there is a gastropub 374 feet from the front door for a meal the second night. my mains was cold when it arrived mind - but they then didn't charge for it.however would have preferred to pay and have it hot. The Potting shed.
