We stayed only one night as we had tickets to a concert at the star theater and this was closer than staying downtown. We did drive to the theater but you could of easily taken public transportation.
Our room had a king bed and its own bathroom. It was very nice and comfortable. I would stay here again. There was a nice bistro/deli just down the street and several restaurants within a few minutes drive time

My experience was not ideal however in honesty I do think the innkeeper tries to the best of her ability. The room I finally got after about 18 emails and 5 phone calls was the Scheherazake Room...I had booked another room and it was confirmed but apparently the previous guest decided to extend his stay and so I was bumped. I had specifically booked at this place for that particular room I confirmed so I was not pleased with being bumped. The house is old and in need of some repair and a thorough cleaning but overall, her heart is in the right place. The room was indeed very small even for one person. The bathtub was nice and the breakfast was decent. Overall, I would say it was acceptable but I wouldn't return based on my experience.

Average quality. Our room, the Scheherazake Room, was very small and tight. Had to pile all the pillows on top of the armoir so we could sleep. Good location, close to downtown. Breakfasts were OK, but nothing special. If you want coffee before 9 a.m., you have to go down and turn it on yourself. I probably would not go back, but it was an OK place.

My wife and I thought we would try a bed and breakfast for our anniversary for a quiet little getaway in downtown Portland. We have lived here 12 years and been to a few that were out of town so we thought we would try one that was a little closer to home. My first sign that something was amiss was when I tried calling to make a reservation. The innkeeper Ellen sounded confused and and referred me to the website instead of taking the reservation over the phone. If you have a customer on the phone ready to make a reservation why would you refer them to an impersonal website? So, I went to the website and reserved a room for the following Friday, plenty of time for her to have gone to the website and taken down our info.
We arrived at 6:30pm the night we reserved only to find that the innkeeper Ellen had not even bothered to check the website and therefore had not reserved our room. It was not clean or ready for us so she asked us to come back in a half hour so she could clean it. The intereior of the B&B was underwhelming to say the least, it was cluttered and the sitting room was full of second hand furniture. Another guest from CA was checking in at the same time and looked equally disappointed. It was awkward to sit quietly in this room with the other person while Ellen's chief concern was running both of our credit cards and collecting up front. $140 for a room in this establishment is paying too much so I guess I understand her desire to get the money before visitors change their mind. The pictures on the website were beautiful, the real thing was average at best and the main attraction for this B&B was lost when we saw it from the street. It is not quiet or cozy, the front is overgrown and the only view was trees in the front yard which was on a main thoroughfare. The room we intended to stay in felt like a spare room in someone's house. So my wife and I left to look for a place to have dinner or a drink but what we really wanted was to unpack and relax after a long week. We talked about it and the more we did the more uncomfortable we were with the whole situation. So after a cocktail and 45 minutes we went back. The house was dark and empty so I walked upstairs to see if I could find Ellen, she had just entered our room (which was a total mess) and had not yet begun cleaning. At that poinjt I had had enough. I nicely asked for a refund and said we were going to make alternate plans. She agreed and apologized.
For an establishment to charge that much money for a single night's stay in a below average room is almost larceny. Ellen was very distracted and nervous and seemed like she had other things to do and our arrival was a surpise to her. Not the kind of reception one expects when putting down $140 for a night that was supposed to be quiet and romantic and ended up being disappointing and not worth the trip.

I have thought about what I would say in this review since I returned home from Portland as I am a Bed & Breakfast owner and operator myself and realize the impact bad reviews can have on a small business. This inn's website is deceptive with what it leaves out. The parking is on a steep hillside, the only lighting is Christmas tree lights wrapped around a porch railing, the railings are loose and of course in Portland's rain the two flights of steps are covered with slippery wet leaves that were never swept in our 4 days there. The common areas could be used for an episode of Hoarders. Garage sale furniture with stacks of books and out of date magazines, clutter and more clutter. I think there might have been some literature on Portland sights in the clutter on the desk but I didn't want to dig through it. The rooms and bathrooms seem to have been freshened up in recent years but the day to day housekeeping was sporadic, one day bed was made but no fresh towels, the next fresh towels and bed not made. Every day we had to forage for toilet paper as that was never replenished or a spare roll left. Fortunately the room across the hall from us was left open and unmade so we took toilet paper from there. On our last day after I removed one of our suitcases from a table in the room that had a lace cloth on it I noticed some of my powder on it. When I went to pick it up to shake it out I discovered SOMEONE ELSE'S FINGERNAIL CLIPPINGS ON THE TABLE!!! Really. We had opted out of any kind of hot breakfast when we booked the room, but I never saw any evidence that it was prepared for any guests. The breakfast room was dirty and cluttered and furnished from yard sales, mismatched cups, glasses, napkins. There is eclectic and then there is just junk. Continental breakfast was a dozen opened boxes of who knows how old cereal, day-old croissants still in the grocery store packaging, a loaf of bread under an ancient dish/tea towel. There was never any evidence of owner/staff in the mornings to refill coffee pot or clear tables. As we were in Portland when the tornadoes hit Moore OK a little morning news would have been appreciated. There was a TV in the breakfast room tuned to a cartoon station with no remote present to change the channel and once again no staff/owner to help you with it. No morning newspaper. When we commented on the lack of TV our last night the owner said "you can have a TV in your room if you ask for one" With that she carried the small TV from the common area to our room. I guess there is one TV for the whole place. Bed & Breakfasts are all different and their diversity and different characters are what make them appealing to a certain type of traveler but I feel this B&B falls short of any industry standards. I have never had such a negative experience in a B&B in my life.

First of all Ellen is very nice and the room was decorated nicely. But the common areas of the house are very cluttered. The outside of the home is poorly maintained and there are items all over the yard. Ellen was also only seen once and that was a check-in.
The hot breakfast is very poor. One morning for 4 adults 5 total pancakes were served as one of the limited breakfast items to share. Another morning we were served some egg/cucumber combination.
The home could be very nice but it takes effort to run a proper B & B and it appears as if the level of effort is lacking. There are better places to chose from and spend your money

Not too impressed with this place. My BF and I stayed in the Scheherazade room and I found it cramped and uncomfortable. No room to put anything on or walk around. We found out ants roam the room and immediately found and ransacked a bag that I had some fruit in. We had to be careful after that not to leave any food out in the open so they would find it. Most egregious however was that despite staying for 5 nights - we found out no room service done after 1st night (bed not made, trash not taken out). The 2nd night - trash was taken out but bed NEVER made. Subsequent nights - no room service. On 4th night - our little size trash cans were overflowing with leftover boxes and I feared we would get ant invasion so we asked Evan to at least empty the trash. He did comply but didn't make the beds. I've never stayed in a place where no room service was done??? Ellen the inn keeper was very nice and always did her best to give us pointers on where to go in Portland. She doesn't get up until after 11:30am every morning but stays up past midnight. Home looks big from the outside but there are only two rooms to see - the small reading parlour and our room. For such a huge appearing home - I would have thought there were a few more charming rooms we can hang out in. The neighborhood however was lovely and quiet so one can get R&R with no noise disturbance. There is Wifi and usually ample street parking. Last word of warning for the ELDERLY AND INFIRMED travelers - do not come her as it sits on a STEEP hill - you have to carry your bags up about 10 steps on the outside to get to front door and then another 7 steps inside to get to the 2nd floor and the rooms. I am not holding it against the B&B but if you are elderly and have any walking/hip/knee issues and have no help - do not stay here.

While the bedroom was relatively clean, if you overlook the ant infestation in the bathroom, the "common areas" were horrific! Dirty, dead floral arrangements, and I don't mean dried flowers, a broken, dusty chandelier lying on the floor, bags and boxes of books, dying plants, filthy floors, a piano littered with papers, refrigerator that had foodstuffs literally frozen into a block of ice, old open boxes of stale cereal, and a continental breakfast that included day old, discounted baked goods served in the plastic container from the grocery store. I believe this B & B is run by the owner, who is not up to the task. During my stay, I saw no evidence of staff. In terms of safety, the outside railing is extremely unstable and the curtain on the porch hides another staircase that one might assume was a railing. Both of these conditions are accidents waiting to happen. Do not peek behind the curtain in the common eating area, which hides the "office". It is a hoarder's paradise. Very scary. Another curtain at the end of the hallway hides a stairwell full of clutter. The beds were comfortable, but the linens were beyond awful. Take down the old Christmas lights, which are everywhere!!! Gross! Nothing to see in this area, no shops or cafes to speak of, however, it was relatively close to highways, so with a car, you are fine in terms of location.

We stayed for two nights in the Woodland Room. Some aspects of the place are very nice - the old house has some good bones - wooden stairs, some interesting wood mouldings, decent shower, etc. However, many aspects were very strange and/or disappointing. There is a microwave and a bar fridge stacked incongruously on a table in the bedroom - it would be better to just have these things available in the dining room. The bed was squeaky and overly springy, though otherwise comfortable.
The main areas were the least attractive - the comments by others about a hoarder's paradise are apt. The dining room has a paper-strewn piano against one wall, there were papers underfoot at the table, boxes piled on every available surface, an old 13" TV stacked on a chair and napkins draped over piles of things (presumably to hide them).
Breakfast was poor - essentially serve yourself, including a pile of scrambled eggs served on a plate and handed around. The only thing set on the table was a plate, knife and fork. All the food was on a sideboard or in a small bar fridge. There was no butter at the table, and the bar fridge was stuffed so full, it was hard to tell what was in it.
There was a toaster oven and a coffee maker on the sideboard, but only one would operate at a time. There was a note taped to one saying that they should not be operated at the same time or else a breaker would trip. Another guest turned on the toaster, not noticing that the coffeemaker was on, so naturally the power went out. The innkeeper was not present at breakfast, so we didn't know where to go to reset the breaker when this happened, so no toast for us.
With some attention, I think this could be a very nice place, but the owner doesn't seem to appreciate the norms of running a B&B (neatness and cleanliness are very important!). Given the deficiencies, I found the price of $140 (+$15 tax) quite high, though it does seem as if Portland hotel prices in the summer are exceptionally high anyway. In comparison, it's still a relatively inexpensive place to stay, but could be so much better with not much more effort.

I love b&b's and as an aspiring inn keeper I am deeply disappointed with this place. We stayed in The Woodlands room. The bathroom does not have a door, only a curtain, so be sure you're VERY comfortable with the person you're staying with as it is like sitting right next to the bed going to the bathroom...with only a curtain in between you and the others.
The person who greeted us was the not the owner, but upon arrival asked if we "had a hard time finding a place" almost as if she was surprised we had chosen here as anything other than a last-resort option. She also seemed bothered that she was still at work and was excited to get home. I could tell she did not enjoy her job.
After we came home there was who I could only assume was the inn-keeper sitting in the front room. Without so much as a 'hello' from her we awkwardly walked past her announcing we were just looking for cups. One would think she would offer to help us or tell us where they were, yet, we walked into the crowded kitchen on our own, grabbed two mugs and retreated to our room.
While in the kitchen we glanced over on the table and saw what assumedly was the the continental breakfast. It was pathetic.
Our headboard is squeaky, there is no TV in the room and considerably overpriced for no amenities and lack of customer service. I'm all for the old school charm and character b&b's offer, which may excuse the lack of amenities but this place was almost put out by the fact they had guests staying there.
Will not be back and do not recommend.

Response from Ellen B, Owner at Bellaterra Bed and Breakfast
Responded 28 Oct 2015
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, Julie. This is TIffany, the assistant innkeeper who was present when you visited. I am sorry to hear you were disappointed with some aspects of your stay, and I would like to respond to the issues you mentioned. First, we would like to address your concern about the curtained bathroom in the Woodland Room. This was a decorating decision that was made in order to preserve the original window in the room. This is a good thing for guests to know, though, and in the future, we will supplement the photos by including it in our confirmation emails so there will be no surprises. Next, I am sorry you were left with a negative impression of our conversation when you checked in. I try to make each guest feel welcome and comfortable, so it is disappointing when I learn that someone felt differently. In retrospect, I can see that my question about having a hard time finding a place to stay could come across the wrong way, but my intention was simply to make small talk about the fact that Comic Con was happening and Portland hotels were very full that week. I am not sure what gave you the impression that I dislike my job. In fact, I do enjoy it very much, and in the future, I will be more conscious to give off a welcoming and warm first impression. While TV's don't live in the rooms by design, they are available upon request. Finally, at the time of your visit, the owner (Ellen) was out of the country. The person you encountered in the parlor must have been another guest, so you can see why they were unable to help you find mugs. We enjoy meeting the folks who stay here and strive to create a positive experience for them, and I'm sorry this didn't come through when you were here.
