This was a real mixed bag. The tours of the museum, the bronze works, and the visit with the artist, were great. The accomodations were not so great. We were led to believe that these were luxury accomodations. Our room was stuffy because the windows were painted shut, even though we were told that we could open them when we were shown the room. The shower was too scary to use and the sofa smelled really bad. Our room was dark and drab, not designed with comfort in mind. There was no place to put your items in the bathroom. It would have been nice to have a shelf or table so that you didn't have to try to balance things on the rim of the ancient sink.

The whole place was rather spooky and sad. Tacky electric fireplace greeted you when you came in the front door of the B&B. It would have been better to have nothing that that sad looking replica. The breakfast was good and served on the enclosed sunporch which was very bright and cheery. There were peacock and goose droppings everywhere. The baths were not very clean, and certainly, weren't hot enough. The tub we were in felt slimy when we got in. There was no place to get water or ice and there were two paper cups in our room. It would have been nice to have some water available for drinking, as the tap water didn't taste too good.

There was a tour of the place and one room was the operating room or surgery. It didn't bother me, but weirded out my companions. The price was way too much for the accomodations but I do recommend the tours.

People were very nice and the visit with David (the bronze sculptor) was a real treat. This place has a lot of potential and I hope it can improved.

I have read the reviews concerning Hot Lake,...if only the people which had negative comments could have seen this establishment from the beginning of conception. We started visiting Hot Lake in 2007, maybe 2 years after Lee and David purchased the property. They moved from Joseph, from a beautiful 7 million dollar business which was nearly given away, (before people run to Joseph to hear the story) you must know there are two sides to it. Enough said. We purchased bronze in 2007, and yes the delivery of the pieces were long and drawn out, but we managed and after 18 months received them, beautiful work! Having been there several years we have seen the building and business grow and grow and improve each time we go back, amazed at what Lee and David are creating. In one of the reviews, someone complained about the $15 charge for the tour, having taken the tour this week it is a work in progress and well worth the price, please give Hot Lakes a chance to prove what they are trying to accomplish. Yes the grounds are not what a person would expect from a B & B, but it is what it is and you must have an open mind. The rooms were decorated by people which had purchased them to donate to the historical being of the building. There might be used furniture and maybe not exclusive enough for some people's taste, sorry about that, but I for one find them inviting and a great experience. I am not related to this family and business, but I have found it so interesting to come back every few years to see this WORK in PROGRESS. The sinks in the rooms are retained and rather interesting to use, causing you, when you use them, to realize what people did back in 1910 to use bathroom facilities such as that. If you are planning on staying there, don't come with a closed mind, come to see history being remade. Lee is a very busy busy person and I just don't think she has time for negative people when she has so much on her plate day after day to deal with, give her a break PEOPLE! She loves Hot Lake and her struggles have been up and down, but she loves people and you will be able to tell that right off.

We were looking for a place to get away from the usual motels/B&B's. On a whim, we chose Hot Lake Springs. We were not disappointed in any way!
What an experience! To see what David and Lee Manuel have done with the property is amazing. You must watch the video showing the transformation.
It is a very quirky place, so if you are looking for something like you find everywhere else in the world, this is not the place for you. All of the rooms that have been remodeled for use are different. Ours had a queen bed with a retrofitted shower in the corner of the room, with the toilet and sink in a separate "closet" two steps up! It was unique and we loved it!
Peaceful. Quiet. Squeaky stairs. Funky and a work in progress. No TV! No phones in the rooms. They do have free Wi-Fi for those of us who thought we needed to stay connected to the rest of the world.
The geese and guinea birds are the guard animals for the property. They can make lots of noise if they want to, and do leave their deposits around, so you should watch where you step.
The in-house spa was great. You must take a soak or two in the bath house.
The museum and foundry are another amazing aspect of the property.
The breakfast is simple. They plan to open the restaurant in 2014 for lunch and dinner. You need to go into La Grande for lunch or dinner, which is only about 5 miles away.
Loved our 2 days there and we will go back.

Room was not as described by AirBNB and we were treated very disrespectful. Toilet and sink in a mini closet space steps up and the in room shower was only a half half shower literally kitty corner to the end of the bed. Soaking tubs were cooler than a basic hot tub and the lodge had rules that were not listed like no company can visit and if someone does visit the front desk had to be with you. Just because it’s an old asylum doesn’t mean paying guests should be treated as if they are patients. The space not the experience was worth $259. We checked in and quickly checked back out never even taking our belongings to the room.

Hot Lake has been awesome. Definitely a destination for the hot springs hounds.

I am glad I got to stay out here before the Manuals left. They are nice, although you can tell ready to move on from here to something more restful. They will be gone after this weekend as it changed hands. I hope the new owners continue the renovations to make this place really shine. Growing up in the Valley here it has always held mystery to me. Though it is very spooky at night, it has amazing energy. This place used to feel so sad. It isn't anymore.

Apparently due to the constant movement of the water just under the soil, ( hot lake is the highest producing hot spring in the world) causing continuous shifting of the structures, it makes maintenance a very time consuming and expensive process (they stated it actually has noticeable movement with the trains!). Also due to the lake and the vents around it, it also needs constant upkeep to deal with wood rot I would think. There is the smell of dampness in the air from it, although I didn't mind it as I think it comes with the territory and I got to see it before they bought it, it was so sad. I don't blame the family for moving on. They have struggling getting help out here to run it (many of the reviews online complained about the absence of people in the building to greet guests and about the service), people from La Grande don't want to travel the 8 minutes to get here. Strange to me after living in a city and traveling longer than that just to make it to WinCo.

To anyone who wants a destination vacation, and if it continues to run as a B&B as I think I stated it would, be sure that you head out of here and stay and emerse yourself in history and healing water.

A completely awesome experience the owners were on top of everything from service to accommodations. I would recommend Hot Lakes to anyone looking to park their RV for any period of time or for those just passing through. The hot Springs and the beauty of the country makes this destination a must see.

After the experience my family had with planning an event here all I can say is make sure you have a plan 'B' in place.
After emailing for approximately 3 months to get this set up, the night before the event we were told it would be costing us $1000 more than was agreed on. We were in contact with the event coordinator and everything was going well then Lee, the owner, got involved and said the event coordinator was mistaken and they would not honor the arrangement.
I think $32 per person for finger foods is a little steep. Just sayin'.

First we had reservations but the gates were locked so we had to call in order to get in which was a drive to the back entrance . was able to park it was dark and bird droppings everywhere..the smell made me ill and we had to be extremly careful where we steped. once inside the front doors the music piped in throughout the buiding was so loud I could barely think straight( not even appropreate Music ) I would have thought the music would be quite 1800's music ,no it was stuff like John denver. the place was kinda cool but, it was so dirty and smelled so bad that we could breath.. we were told as part of the $245.00 spent on a small hoarer room atmisphere that we could use the hot tubs and mineral spa ..but after changing in our room and coming back down to the spa there were no employees in sight and every thing was locked up.. the owner came by bear footed and hyper to say we could use the outside hot tubs ...they were full of duck poop and slimmy, there were no refreshments and again the horrible music was so loud we couldnt relax I expected jets in the tub but there were no just hot water that wasnt all that hot..after about 20 min I looked up to find the owner standing outside the door way starring at us..which gave me the creeps .. then she asked if we needed a drink of water.. I told her Yes most diffenatly so she brought us dirty looking Plastic wine decanters then walked away.. the room and the bed were so cram backed with junk. you name it was in there were could not get comfortable and did not rest at all..breakfast in the morning was well what should I say ... first it took us forever to find were we were suppose to go then was told to sit where every we would like ..We choose the corner by the window then was told oh well sorry you dont want to sit there ..we looked and the whole corner was filthy and covered with bugs.. but as we choose a table in the center of the room it wasnt much better Bugs everywhere ..there was 4 others in the patio style dinning area and as they left I watched the employee tleave behind the unused dishes and utensils there as she addingd new ones for the next quests( all tables were preset). the food well what can I say Biscuits and Gravy and canned fruit are hard to mess up but we coud not eat .the biscuits were so dry and hard you couldnt even cut them with a sharp knife and the rest of it well never mind I m sure you can just imagine. It was the worst Birthday day presant I have ever gotten and We will never waste another dime to stay there, by the way you get a $100.00 off your next stay but dont bother I woud not stay again if it were free.. Its very sad that these people went to all this trouble of attempting to bring back this great place only to make such a horrible place..

RUN AWAY FAST!! --- Don't even bother staying here, this is one of the most horrible establishments I have ever seen. Lets start with the reservation, depending on who you talk with you will get different prices and availability on the rooms. Do you need to use a conference room while you are there, beware, they don't tell you that they will secretly hit you with a $1000 fee for using the room and not disclose the fee before hand. And in case you decide not to stay, watch your credit card closely, they will try to charge you for whatever they can anyway. Try to talk with the owner(s) and you will find that they just don't seem to care whether you stay or not, maybe because they plan on charging you anyway. RUN AWAY FAST!!

Well, for starters, I would like to say I never stayed the night at Hot lake, but I did go out there for lunch and breakfast a few times (of which the food and employee service where excellent). I also toured the rooms and checked out the war museum. Overall, cool stuff, BUT after meeting the owners, it really ruined the place for me. I really value the REAL history of the location and building and unfortunately the owners have dispensed of that and turned it into a David Manual showcase.

Not only that, while I was out of the buffet area, I ran into 'Lee' one of the owners, and I was left feeling alienated by the way she treated me. Almost as if I where in some strangers house. (Side note: while looking around I realized the owners take donations which seems ridiculous considering it's a for profit venture for them). Anyways, after my experience at Hot Lake, I was visiting Joseph Oregon, where the owners used to be located and I have to say, they didn't leave a very positive footprint behind them there either which really speaks towards my experience at their current location.

In summation, Hot Lake, the building and the real history of the location is truly awesome; but, sadly it's true potential is not fully realized because of the short shortsightedness of couple individuals. And what your left with is a really uncomfortable, strange experience not because of the staff, but rather the owners.
