Detailed Reviews
This is a modified Bed & Breakfast and not a B&B in the traditional sense (no active host or hostess). It worked for us and it was in a lovely old house. As noted by others, we were able to walk to most things in Baker City.
Our friends got there the day before so they had the big room and a much nicer bathroom. We were in the Rose Suite and the room was very nice but the bathroom left much to be desired. I’ve been in two hole outhouses that were bigger!
My wife and I both thought the bed was going to be a problem because it felt pretty stiff. Turned out that it was very comfortable and it provided one of the best nights of sleep I’ve had in a while. I really want to know the make and model of that mattress?
Thanks for a nice quiet weekend. RobS99

Our reservation, 2 rooms, 2 couples at the Blue Door Inn Baker City was made 5 weeks in advance.; one queen (which we prefer), one king with shared bath. Our ages range from 64 to 79. We have & have had jobs where customer service is of the utmost importance. We know what it means to be a good guest. We received an email from the innkeeper on 2/1/17 that stated, “Our check-in window is between 4 and 6 pm PT. Don’t worry if you will be arriving outside this window.” We left home the morning of 2/2 (Super Bowl Sunday), arriving at the Inn around 3pm, without stopping for lunch. The Innkeeper stated we could watch the game on the TV in the living room, enjoy the fire in the fireplace, (available to all guests) and introduced us to another lovely quest couple that would be joining us to watch the game. She provided general check-in information, stated she was providing us with a “complimentary upgrade to a room with a king bed at no extra charge,” that she “liked to do that when she could,” and that there was “complimentary wine and port available in the living room.” After putting bags in our rooms, 2 of us went in search of food to bring back for lunch/dinner. In Baker City, on a Sunday, many of the eating establishments are closed. We returned with pizza and salads, offering our food to the other quest watching the game. We served the food on plates that were openly available on shelves in the dining room (the table was already set for breakfast). When done, we did not feel comfortable leaving dishes and cartons in the living room, or leaving the responsibility of our clean up to the Innkeeper. There was a swinging door from the dining room to the kitchen, without signage anywhere indicating that the kitchen was off-limits to guests, neither had this been communicated to us by the Innkeeper. Still, I knocked on the swinging door, without response, and we entered the kitchen/laundry room with our dishes and to dispose of cartons. The dishwasher was running. There was already a dirty dish in the sink. We opted to rinse our dishes, rather than leave them dirty in the sink. Because the garbage receptacles were not large enough for the pizza boxes, we left them on the counter. The floor of the laundry area, an open extension of the kitchen, was piled with dirty sheets & towels. I assumed this was why we received the ‘upgrade.’ No problem. The Innkeeper then stepped into the kitchen and she was furious with us! She stated that Oregon Health laws do not allow us to be in the kitchen & that now she was going to have to re-sanitize the kitchen. She ushered us out of the kitchen and at the door, went on to say how she had provided us with “early check-in, a TV to watch the game, a fire in the fireplace, complimentary port and wine (which we did not drink--the other guest did), room upgrades,” that she felt she had graciously “done enough” and that we had crossed the line by not asking for permission to enter the kitchen. I responded that she had been gracious, apologized and said, “we didn’t know,” then retreated to our rooms, earlier than planned. The next morning, coffee was served in the living room before breakfast. We watched as one of the other guests (not in our party) took an empty coffee pot into the kitchen and set it down on the counter (without asking for permission & with no negative response elicited). At check out, done in the presence of the other guest couple, the Innkeeper told us she had to add a total of $40 ($20 each) to our bills for the sanitation of the kitchen. She stated “if you had just asked, but you didn’t ask.” My husband started to complain & I said-“Let’s just go.” We won’t be back. We left feeling sad and unsettled.

The house was a very nice older house, well appointed and comfortable. Our party of 4 liked the house itself very much and we were comfortable in our accommodations. Our host Gaynelle "upgraded" us at no charge, we assume based on all the laundry in the kitchen, because one of the rooms was not made up. The upgrade was appreciated however. The other couple staying there was very pleasant and we enjoyed their company.
The down side of our stay was due to our host at times coming across as hostile and accusatory. I personally had 3 encounters that were uncomfortable and marred the stay.
1. The first was in trying to get in the front door, carrying bags and attempting to open the door with one hand. I will add I don't have a lot of strength in my right arthritic thumb which was required to push the door lever. I actually thought the door had gotten locked mistakenly. I knocked and heard our host call out through the door from her chair, but I couldn't hear what she was saying. I called back I thought the door maybe was locked. She continued to yell from her chair something I still could not understand. She then got up from her chair and opened the door. Instead of saying something about old doors needing tricks to open them, her most fervent goal was to make sure I understood that the door was NOT locked. Then she told me that you have to pull the door towards you before trying to push down on the lever. Of course, I couldn't know this, never having been there before. Then once again reiterated the door had NOT been locked.
2. We arrived 1 hour earlier than check-in, which we were told would be fine, though when we got there, no one answered the door or the phone when we called to say we were there. The other couple were coming back from an outing and let us in. It was Super Bowl Sunday and our husbands were hoping to watch the game, which started at 3:30p, whether there or at a pub. It turns out our host had a brand new TV and was very accommodating for our husbands and the other gentleman guest to watch the game, which was very welcoming news for them. She gave us the rundown of the house and where our rooms were and also told us of a very favorably reviewed pub walking distance from the house where we could get something to eat and likely see the first part of the game. We hurried to get our things in our room and get to the pub to quench our hunger after a long days drive to get there, only to find it was closed on Sunday's and Monday's. We went back to the Inn and decided we would go to the local pizza place and get pizza to bring back while the guys watched the game. There were plates openly available on a hutch and so we used 4 small plates and 4 forks. Since we didn't go out to eat we didn't want to leave more cleanup for our host, so took our dishes to the kitchen through a door that was not marked as private in any way. We rinsed our plates so she could just put them in the dishwasher and wanted to leave our pizza boxes near the trash, so she wouldn't have to pick up after us. She heard me in the kitchen and came out and got visibly and audibly upset that I had come into the kitchen. I apologized and said we just didn't want to leave more work for her, since we both know how much work having guests is. My friend apologized as well when she was also scolded for coming in the kitchen. The phrase that sticks with me most, but by no means the only thing said was, "it is highly inappropriate for you to be in here". Her anger continued to escalate and our genuine apologies seemed to fall on deaf ears. I need to note that the other gentleman guest was eating sunflower seeds throughout the game and at the end took the glass filled with hulls into the kitchen with no negative encounter. Also the next morning his wife took the coffee pot into the kitchen for a refill and nothing was said about it being inappropriate for her to be in there.
3. Our host provided a bottle of complimentary wine, which was a nice gesture and the other gentleman guest availed himself of that. We however had brought our own bottle and we decided to drink it in my room and visit while our husbands watched the game. I had forgotten my travel wine opener and so we needed to borrow our hosts. There was some confusion with our car alarm when my husband went to fetch something and I thought my friend had gone out to help him turn it off. In fact she had gone down to get the wine opener by the complimentary wine. I decided to go get it as well when I thought she was out dealing with the car alarm and it wasn't there of course since she already had it. Normally this would just be a comedy of events, but when I gingerly and apprehensively knocked on the door to the dreaded kitchen to tell our host I couldn't find the wine opener, she said there was one out there. I told her I thought I had seen one but couldn't find it and did she have another one we could borrow for a minute. Meanwhile my friend is up opening our bottle of wine with the missing opener. Our host then proceeded to say that one of us must have taken it. While this was true enough in reality, it was the tone with which she said it, making me feel like we were being accused of thievery. She grudgingly went to "see if I can find ANOTHER one". While she was in the kitchen my friend came down with the original opener, so we went to tell her of the misunderstanding as she came out with another one. She was not very gracious and again it was most important that she drive home the fact that she knew one of us had taken it. We again apologized and she said she might forgive us.
The next morning after breakfast, which was prepared by another woman and was very good, we were given our bill. Our credit cards had already been charged. Our bill was $20 higher each than anticipated. We asked about it and Gaynelle said she had to charge us more for going into the kitchen without permission and using dishes, causing her to have to disinfect, which I assume she has to do anyway under the laws of food preparation. She indicated that if we had "asked permission", it might have been different, though I am not sure what would have changed. She started listing off all the reasons we should feel grateful and we should understand what a good value we got and she felt very justified in charging us each an additional $20 because we were in the kitchen for 5 minutes. This was all with a very combative tone and in front of the other couple, which, judging by their faces was uncomfortable. There was no prior discussion, she simply charged our cards with what she determined was appropriate to, in reality, assuage her anger. All I can say is don't get on the wrong side of Gaynelle if you stay there. We of course will never go back.

My wife and I were very tired when we arrived at the B&B. We had specifically reserved a room with an ensuite bath. However, when we arrived the young lady who checked us in told us that the room they had given us shared a bath. I then pulled out confirmation which stated we had reserved a room with ensuite bath. She hemmed and hawed, and then admitted that they had given our room to another party. Later, when we asked to speak to the owner, the receptionist advised us she had gone to bed. This was 7:30 PM.
We then asked to see the bath we were supposed to share. It was just a tub. We then asked her who cleaned the tub in between users. She told us there was shower to use downstairs we could use. I later tried to take a shower, only to discover that there was no hot water.
Breakfast was adequate but not exceptional. That morning I finally was able to talk with the owner. To her credit, she adjusted our rate. However, the whole experience seemed very unprofessional.

After all the rave reviews, I have to admit my expectations were high. We reserved the red room because it had a king bed and an en suite bathroom with shower. We arrived at 4 pm and were welcomed by a pleasant young woman who showed us our room but it was apparent she was not the bubbly woman described by the previous reviewers. She admitted she was somewhat new and overwhelmed by the amount of work involved in maintaining a B&B. She asked if breakfast might work for us at 8:00 am. We asked if we could delay it until 8:30'and she agreed.
We asked about restaurants because previous B&B experiences usually led us to the best places in town. She offered only a suggestion of a microbrewery nearby. We settled in and picked up a map and headed downtown. After touring some of the shops and art galleries we stopped at The Historic Geiser Grand Hotel for a glass of wine and an appetizer and ended up making reservations for dinner.
When we returned to the B&B, the woman who had been described in previous posts was there waiting for other guest to arrive. She was very bubbly and friendly.
The next morning we arrived for breakfast at 8:30 and discovered our breakfast already plated and was cold and had been out since 8:00 am. We asked to have it rewarmed which they did.
Pluses of the place: a quiet residential area, very comfortable bed.
Minuses: extremely small bathroom with no place to set anything, no mirrors in the room itself so makeup and hair was difficult, very little sound insulation so voices carry easily as well as footsteps and door closing.

A weekend away at a nice B & B for our Anniversary was spoiled by the owner's behavior and lack of people skills.
· Room was nice. Clean and comfortable but the atmosphere was horrible. Staff (not the owner) at breakfast was very nice, she was new to the area. Unfortunately one of the reasons we were excited to stay here was to get some history on the town and of the house we were staying in.
· The visit to this establishment was totally tarnished by the proprietor's behavior. When we arrived there was a note on the door with the keypad code. This indicated to us that no one was present. We entered, found our room key on the table and took our bags to our room still thinking no one was there. As we were leaving our room we could hear a dog barking in the room directly below ours then we heard the Inn Keeper scolding her for barking. Still she didn’t appear to greet or acknowledge us. Upon returning at 8:00pm we could not get the front door open door, after a couple failed attempts we had no choice but to ring the doorbell. Gaynelle, the Inn Keeper, threw open the door and instead of saying something about old doors needing tricks to open them, etc., looked at me, furrowed her brows and said my name like I had done something wrong. Her most fervent goal was to let me know I put the code in wrong (I hadn’t, it’s 4 numbers) and make sure I understood that the door was NOT locked. Then she told me that you have to pull the door towards you before trying to push down on the lever. Then once again reiterated that I had put the code in wrong and made me enter it in front of her. She then promptly returned to her quarters to continue watching her TV show (while her dog barked) this went on until a little after 10:00pm. The scolding at the door was the only time we saw her in our entire stay there.
Payed for two nights but opted to not stay another. She was SO rude. It was a very weird unwelcoming feeling. The only time our hostess acknowledged us she was hostile and accusatory. All I can say is don't get on the wrong side of Gaynelle if you stay there. We of course will never go back.

Response from Gaynelle N, Owner at Baker City Blue Door Inn
Responded 21 Aug 2019
This reservation was not made through TripAdvisor. It was one of 10-12 complete night stays given/donated to eastern Oregon non-profits by the Inn each year. We contribute to Carnegie Crossroads Art Center, Anthony Lakes, Oregon Film Festival, etc. The inn charges for nothing.. Wines, treats, French press coffee, gourmet breakfast, fresh flowers in room and common room are are all paid for And provided by the innkeeper. In this case someone in Idaho bought the night at a silent auction and then gave it to this guest as a thank you for services rendered.. This guest was given a prime weekend night for her anniversary. If this guest is interested in the history, email me some questions and i will do my best to answer. The staff person you spoke with at breakfast has worked here for more than a year. Best wishes,

A quite nice Band B spoiled by the owner's overcharging and behaviour .
· Room was okay. Clean and comfortable but completely spoiled by reasons below. Breakfast okay but perhaps a choice would be better. Staff at breakfast were very nice.
· The visit to this establishment was totally tarnished by the proprietor's behaviour. When we arrived there was a note on the door with keypad code. This indicated to me that no one was present. My bill was in an envelope on a table. When we found our room I opened this and to say I was shocked would be an understatement. The bill was for more than double what I had booked. At first I thought that I had made a mistake and checked my booking online but I was correct. I checked my credit card and the high amount had been charged I phoned booking.com to confirm this. The owner said in her reply to booking.com that she had 'lost' my booking - how come she had all my details? The next morning The breakfast server gave me a revised bill for the correct amount. I accepted that my refund would be forthcoming. I was wrong.. The owner never appeared during our 2 day stay even though we could hear her and her dog in her quarters. I would have thought that when you have made an error like this you would apologise to your client. Today is the 26th day after my arrival and after many phone calls and emails via booking .com she still has not refunded me. As of today booking.com have refunded me and have escalated the investigation with regard to the Blue Door Inn. Booking.com have dealt with this very well throughout. Beware

My husband John and I are Rotarians and were in Baker City for a Rotary meeting. The club suggested we stay at The Blue Door Inn because it’s Rotarian owned.
Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner Gaynelle. She helped us get settled and then we enjoyed learning about the history of the home. They are only the 3rd generation to own the property. The older Home is lovely appointed and there are many thoughtful touches throughout the place.
We stayed in the Grand Suite with an en suite bath that is absolutely adorable. The room is enormous, complete with a sitting area and a dressing room.
Breakfast the next morning was delicious and there was plenty of food, accompanied by one of my favorites, French press coffee.
Wine and snacks were available in the living room and coffee and tea for guests to help themselves as they wish.
We love Baker and will be back!

Very disappointed! We booked two months in advance. We called about three hours before arrival to let the hostess know we were going to be late. She called us back about one hour later to tell us that was fine and gave us the code to get into her B&B. An hour before our arrival, she called again saying that she had overbooked and that we didn't have a room. Mind you this was at 7:30PM on the weekend before the total eclipse.
Luckily, we were able to get a room at the Best Western Sunbridge and that turned out very well.

After a busy day exploring eastern Oregon was nice to relax at the B&B. I had a few cookies laid out for me and a glass of Port. Went out for dinner at the Geiser Grand Hotel then parked out in front. Noisy guests with lots of kids poorly controlled so I went downstairs to read only to have the communal TV blasting SpongBob. Keep in mind that the larger suite has no shower; I preferred using a wand in the bath to save the trek downstairs in the morning. Food was ample, well prepared and tailored to my diet.
