Stayed here for a single night, have been a regular on and off over the years, and while the staff and food were good, this hotel badly needs some proper investment and TLC. It’s in a perfect location close to Hickstead Show Jumping Arena, up the road from the new expansion in Burgess Hill, it could be a premier location for many local businesses and location, but sadly it’s very tired. It needs investment in just about every area. From the reception areas (the always prevalent faint sewage whiff), to the carpets fixtures and fittings bedrooms, bathrooms and water pressure issues (which we were told about on check out - when shower flow was complained about - very handy!) the food in the restaurant was good, as was the service and staff very polite. Just someone needs to take this hotel, spend some serious money...to make some serious money from local business, weddings and tourists. Why do I say this? The highest price local hotel in Burgess Hill is a Premier Inn (c £150 per night) and it’s always booked up, this hotel isn’t and that says it all.

Our granddaughter and her horse had qualified in our area for the national schools competition to show jump in the final at The All England Jumping Course at Hickstead. As we live nearly 300 miles away we wanted to stay local to the show ground and required a hotel the was dog friendly. The Hickstead hotel fitted that requirement being just 5 minutes from the venue. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful from reception to restaurant. The bedroom was on the ground floor and was a good size with tea and coffee making facilities. The room was starting to look tired and the room was not well insulated as we heard guests upstairs walking about above us and also in the corridor. The price for B & B and the dog was good value and the cooked breakfast was plentiful. The hotel is set away from the main road so you are not disturbed by passing traffic and is surrounded by large gardens ideal for walking the dog. There are plenty of parking spaces around the hotel

The staff were all cheerful and helpful, however, our room was dark and airless, the bedding was low quality, foam pillows and cheap duvet. On our second day, our room was not cleaned and tea making items not replaced, loo paper had run out , bin not emptied and bed unmade and towels not replaced. The over bath shower had a cheap curtain that needed replacing, it didn't reach far enough down, to stop water running onto the bathroom floor. A staircase ran over our room so we were kept awake at night by constant running up and down. The food was dissapointing. I had chicken pie with mash and vegetables which arrived barely warm. I returned it and asked for a salad sandwich, which I was told, they did not do. I had an egg sandwich which was made with the cheapest supermarket, thin white bread, which I didn't eat. The breakfast bread was at least wholemeal, but again, the thin, cheap supermarket type. The scrambled egg that my husband had,was tough and unpleasant. No chef worth the name would ever produce such poor quality food so I assume they don't have one. Whilst I accept that Covid has hit hard in many places, this low level of experience really is not acceptable . We were expecting at the very least, decent quality food and a comfortable bed to sleep in. The hairdyer provided was fixed at the back of a drawer and required the on switch to be held down to keep working and the flex was much too short, making the whole experience very difficult. There were only very shallow and narrow drawers in the room, only big enough for socks and other very small items of clothing and the hanging space in the wardrobe was too short for dresses, meaning that the bottom 6 inches of my dresses were crumpled. Fine for men who just have trousers and shirts, but not good for us ladies whose dresses need more space to hang. All in all, not something we would want to repeat. The online pictures of this hotel show a large, impressive Edwardian property, but the rooms are in a tatty annex next to that. We were expecting big airy rooms, what we got was a million miles away from that, low ceilinged, gloomy and airless.

Recently went to a wedding. (Half the wedding contracted covid), although this was no doubt carried in by a guest the rooms were tropical with heating on full whack all day and night/stifling. The rooms are quite tired. Ours had ripped net curtains and the inter joining room had rips in the duvet covers. We ordered champagne the morning of wedding to brides room which arrived after some time but with no glasses or the orange juice we had asked for with it, these turned up 30 mins later. The breakfast (bearing in mind there were 4 of us and one couple and a single man dining) had been left to sit under a heat lamp for ages so everything was dry to the point the beans had a thick skin on them. The toast we ordered with breakfast turned up 30 mins after we’d finished and the butter another 20 mins after that. I think there were literally 2 staff members doing everything. They were pleasant but when you are charging money for a wedding at your establishment you need to have more staff. They looked knackered and obviously were working far too long hours. There were rubbish bags and mops and buckets from the day before in the front porch if hotel that one of us ended up clearing away so the guests would nit be greeted with it when they arrived. The bar in the room of wedding was supposed to be open but was not. All in all it was all a bit like faulty towers. Place needs a lick of paint, sprucing up and more staff.

Dear Chelsea1965, Thank you for your review. I am appauled to hear about the above issue and shall need to investigate these points mentioned. As for the bar unfortunately on the night our system went down in the function bar meaning the till there was unusable. Unfortunetly as this was out of our control even with our system support unable to rectify this issue it did leave us without this bar operational. Thank you for bringing the previous items to my attention in order for me to investigate. I do appologise that on this occasion we had not met our usual standards. Kindest regards, Alex Karollus Operations Manager

Recently had our Wedding at The Hickstead Hotel. Beautiful surroundings and lovely staff. The wedding co-ordinators were very welcoming, helpful, thoughtful, supportive and nothing was too much trouble. The package was also very reasonably priced and we felt we got a lot for the money.
The only reason that I haven't given it the full 5 stars is because as a Hotel that promotes itself as a wedding venue, I feel it should have a proper Honeymoon Suite for the newly married couple. The room that is allocated is a normal Excecutive room, which is nice but smaller than other hotels Honeymoon suites.

We booked our wedding for June 2021 but had to move it due to covid. The hotel were very helpful and initially in touch to discuss all the arrangements but it went downhill after our Co-Ordinator went on maternity leave. We had to chase relentlessly and whilst Karen was an improvement on her predecessor there were things that were completely missed in the set up. The room I stayed in the night prior to the wedding left a lot to be desired with ripped bedding and torn net curtains. The day of the wedding we were served an inedible breakfast that had been under a heat lamp but to be fair there was only one lady serving who was also covering reception. A friend of mine had to move all the cleaning equipment away from the front of the hotel as it was such an eyesore. The wedding went smoothly and the dinner was good but there was items that they got wrong on the menu which was disappointing. There was also a dreadful loud buzzing coming from a fridge from the bar at the back of the room. In the evening the bar in the function room was not used as promised and everyone had to use the bar in the lounge which was tiny. There was no explanation to this and we had been promised that both bars would be open and there would be no queuing for drinks which did not happen. The staff became incredibly rude at the end of the night - it felt like they had had our money and we were no longer important to them. We were told that the bar would be open to all hotel guests but this was shut at 100am by a very grumpy member of staff who said that he would need a water cannon to make the guests leave and go to bed! Absolutely appalling! Obviously the wedding rates there are cheaper than other hotels but there is a good reason for this as the hotel is dilapidated and needs an overhaul. A huge Covid infection for a third of the guests was the cherry on the cake - not blaming the hotel for that but it didnt help having over 130 people crammed in their lounge bar!!!

Dear Saharaharahara, Thank you for your review unfortunately we did have a slight change of personel, i am sorry to hear that you had found that difficult in regards to having to chase up. I appreciate your comments and shall look into why the service was not up to our usual service standards. I am pleased to hear though that your meal was good even if it was slightly different than expected. Unfortunately on the night we did have issues with some of our electrical equiptment, which hampered our service standards due to no fault of our own. As for the comment made by the staff member I shall have to investigate this further, as such comments are completely unacceptable. I am sorry to hear about some of your guests. We do provide hand sanitiser stations throughout and masks should guests require them. As well as keep high volume areas ventilated. Thank you again for the feedback, Alex Karollus

I booked this room specifically as their website said they did 24 hour room service and I knew I wouldn't get to eat until around 2300 due to working.
Got back at 2300 and was told the kitchen closed at 2100 and they didn't do 24 hour room service, showed the manager that it was on their site. Was told that the bar was available 24 hours and this is classed as room service!
Was also told that if I knew I was going to be late I could have told them and they would have had something there, why would I do this when it said 24 hour room service.
When I asked for Head Office details, was told by the manager all complaints come to me.
Went to bed very hungry, will not be returning and I do a lot of visits to Hickstead as work in the Horse world.

This was my third of fourth stay here and while it was ok, it really was just OK. £140 B and B was average price.
It really could be a nice hotel with just a few updates. My room was well sized, but dated, with a tv and remote with the back missing, threadbare carpet and hairs in the bath, showing it hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned.
Having said that the room was clean.
Breakfast which costs £15. (Part of the £140) was not as good as I have experienced there before.
No one to greet and find a table for you, tea and coffee now served in pump urns, which didn’t work properly. Toast and full English was ok, sausages were a highlight! And Heinz ketchup was on offer.
All in all ok… but I think if Premier Inn had rooms, that would be my choice over here.

Fantastically located for commuting to all of West and East Sussex. Lovely building with huge grounds and ample parking. Very safe for the kids and very close to Burgess hill and Hayward’s heath if to live need a supermarket or somewhere different to eat.

The staff are really lovely and made our stay very comfortable. The receptionist upon check-in was very helpful arranging a return taxi for us all as we were in the area for a family wedding. We didn’t make use of the restaurant but the menu looked fresh with a few good options.

2 night stay was reasonable in terms of cost for a “room only” status.

A couple of small issues we needed to bring to the attention but we’re dealt with during and after our stay with some really good post communication.

With a little more investment perhaps in the rooms, bringing them up to date, this place will be a lovely place to return too.

Thanks

Yes... they had a wedding or some other big "do" when we were there. We did stay at the farthest end... by luck. But the walls are so thin that our disgruntled neighbor banged on our door complaining of the TV - and we're not even deaf! To be fair, the festivities didn't disturb us and they handle it well.
