Nestled in nature, Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa is celebrated for its luxurious and charming atmosphere, with guests frequently lauding the cozy fires and opulent decor, though a few suggest a decor refresh. The spacious rooms with luxurious touches are a hit among travelers, as are the pristine spa facilities, which contribute to the hotel's overall cleanliness.
While the professional staff and beautiful grounds are often praised, some guests have experienced service inconsistencies and feel the prices don't always match the quality of service. The hotel's location offers a tranquil retreat with easy access to outdoor activities.

We booked two nights in a Treehouse lodge and pre arranged celebration decor for my son's birthday at a charge. Arrival was efficient and we were quickly guided to our lodge with dedicated parking outside and a golf cart taking our luggage in for our arrival. The lodges are wonderful, private and isolated. Spacious, clean and with a seperate bedroom and futon style beds for the kids in the main room. We were greeted with chocolates, cakes, hand written cards, books with personal notes for the children, fruit and Lauren-Perrier champagne which were lovely touches. It's a beautiful set up with private hot tub and log fire. We went in January so it was ideal. The beach is a walk away through the grounds where we found games and football table. The beach was clean but being January was quite empty, the local area seemed empty with nothing in particular to see but very easy to get around. The hotel itself is quite dated and may suit an older crowd so we stayed mainly in the lodge and went to eat out locally and sampled the bar. Breakfast was included both in the restaurant and with a very adorable (very large) hamper which is delivered each morning through the hatch. It was full and more than enough for 4 with fresh pastries, fruit, milk, meat etc. Just out of curiosity with tried breakfast in the main hotel too which was wonderful. It is very expensive, we paid around £1,300 for 2 nights, but for a getaway it was perfect. We couldn't fault anything. We pre booked to use the pool which has seperate areas with a jacuzzi, sauna etc. It was large, clean and felt like we had private use apart from 2 other families. The staff here were very friendly. The hotel do place a service charge on absolutely everything which i didnt realise until back home, including the turn down service but once I notified them, they quickly removed and reimbursed me where requested. It's perfect for some privacy and time away to celebrate special occasions. Would definitely recommend a visit to the Treehouse lodges.

Chewton Glen is undoubtedly a beautiful country retreat, blessed with stunning grounds, bright and airy rooms, and the added charm of a scenic stroll through the Chewton Bunny reserve to the beach. Proximity to the sea is a definite perk, as was our delightful lunch at Noisy Lobster—recommended by the receptionist was lovely.
The rooms? Classic English interiors, elegantly done, though apparently designed for guests who either share one phone charger or enjoy watching their devices slowly die. A single outlet by one side of the bed, no USB ports, and not a charging station in sight—an oversight that would be disappointing at a three-star hotel, let alone a luxury one.
And then there was the service: charming in theory, but consistently a step behind reality. Breakfast, particularly on Sunday, was an exercise in patience and social anthropology. A lengthy wait to be seated, guests mysteriously losing their tables while they dared to approach the buffet, and coffee requests seemingly sent into the abyss. Nothing catastrophic, just a slow-motion unraveling of what should have been seamless five-star service.
Dinner at the Dining Room? The only thing more ambitious than the prices was the expectation that the food would live up to them. £40 for a spatchcock chicken that would make Nando’s blush, starters in the £25–30 range that left little impression, and one standout dish—the dressed Devon crab—which only served to highlight the mediocrity of the rest. We canceled our reservation at their casual dining spot, The Kitchen, rather than risk another underwhelming (and overpriced) meal.
Then came the mystery charge—a nightly 12.5% service fee for accommodation. For what, exactly? The privilege of sleeping? Thankfully, it could be removed upon request and I wasn’t the only one at checkout raising an eyebrow (or two) over this.
Where to eat instead? Aside from Noisy Lobster, The Jetty was another fantastic alternative. A lively, high-quality restaurant with an unbeatable location on the water, Jetty delivered a delightful Sunday lunch with wonderful views and a standard of food that far surpassed Chewton Glen’s Dining Room.
Verdict:
Would I return? Yes, but with a revised game plan: stay for the setting, the walks, and the comfort—but dine elsewhere. Chewton Glen gets so much right, but at this price point, they shouldn’t be getting the basics so wrong. And please, for the love of all things five-star, install a few more outlets.

Where do I start. The service from all the staff from start to finish was impeccable! The rooms were very clean, if you needed anything extra they are very quick to accommodate that. We stayed in the Marryat suite for our wedding, the views at the hot tub were amazing. We were then very lucky to stay in the treehouse. Thank you everyone that made our stay one to remember. Don’t hesitate about booking, you won’t regret it. If you are looking to get married I also couldn’t recommend Georgia and Chewton Glen more. She makes you feel so special, she is very organised and has great attention to detail. We were in very safe hands with Georgia! Highly recommend!

Pro’s: staff are friendly; treehouse and hot tub is lovely, spa is good too and food at the Kitchen by James Martin is great. I’m sure the indoor tennis centre is nice but didn’t see it or use it.
Con’s: multiple items added to our bill at checkout which we never ate or drank, got these removed but no real explanation why they were on there. Dirty cutlery in room. Had to ask four times for extra cutlery to eat our room service dinner which meant food went cold. Steak was very tough even though cooked medium rare and at £45 per steak plus service charge it shouldn’t be. I think it’s rude to add discretionary service charge of 5%, including on the cost of the room, to bill without first asking, especially when taking into account the prices. If staying in treehouse at over £1000 / night I wouldn’t expect an extra charge for newspapers especially as we were not told there would be a charge when asked if we wanted a newspaper in the morning.
Overall slightly disappointing despite the hotel being in a lovely setting.

Wow - what a place! A truly special hotel, with top-end hospitality and service at its heart. The hotel is approached via a sweeping drive through beautiful grounds, and the friendly and knowledgeable porters are on hand at the door to take your bags and park your car while you check in. The public areas are stunning - including gorgeous lounges, all beautifully furnished and opulently decorated, with a couple of log fires to add to the ambience. Our Junior Suite was huge, with a giant king size bed, sitting area, and a very luxurious bathroom. The shower was awesome! We ate dinner at the Kitchen - the less formal dining venue, at the bottom of the drive (the porters will drive you there, if you don’t fancy the short walk). A relaxed menu (from pizzas and gourmet burgers upwards), at fair prices. Breakfast was without doubt the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had. Wonderful cold buffet selection, including premium fruits and top quality orange juice), with hot breakfast items available to order or from the buffet. Excellent kipper! We spent plenty of time in the spa, with its huge hydrotherapy pool, outdoor hot tub and heated loungers. The staff throughout were excellent - professional, efficient and friendly. A fabulous stay!

Chewton Glen Hotel is an absolute slice of paradise! A truly stunning place where every moment is filled with comfort and care. The location is a dream: the hotel is nestled in lush greenery, with the coast nearby, offering fresh air and total relaxation. The rooms are luxurious and spacious, each with its own unique atmosphere that creates a sense of peace and comfort. The Treehouse Suites, in particular, are a magical experience – perched among the treetops, you feel completely connected with nature, while surrounded by every modern comfort imaginable.
The staff here are unbelievably friendly and attentive, almost as if they can read your mind and anticipate your every need. This was a surprise birthday gift from my beloved. I hadn't even stepped out of work mode at the moment we pulled into the drive, at which point spreadsheets and emails quickly fizzled away. The grounds are immaculate and so beautiful on the drive towards the main building.
Check in was very pleasant with the concierge sending our bags up to the room whilst we went through the usuals at the desk, before the receptionist walked us to our room. Now the room itself - wow. Obviously I had no idea what was coming my way, but we had a suite with a hot tub and really it's hard to use words to describe it.
To be honest, I thought we'd stepped into another corridor in the hotel, but all those doors were ours! There was a giant bedroom with all the amenities, which opened up into a comfortable lounge. There was a double bathroom with bath and double shower and a separate toilet room. The room was equipped with chocolates, biscuits, a bowl of fresh fruit and a bottle of champagne (not organised by us!). There were the usual amenities such as fresh fruit juices and milk in the fridge as well as a coffee machine and kettle.
The hot tub was the one which escalated things into the stratosphere, which was all hot and prepared for us in advance. There was a plethora of complimentary slippers and robes, which meant moving between the hot tub and room was a bit easier (nobody wants dirty feet in the tub!).
In the event that you do not have a hot tub in your room, the hotel does have a very nice spa. It has all the usual offenders such as steam room and sauna, but also has a separate room with all the sensory jets etc. There is also a jacuzzi outside which is a nice touch. The spa was okay, but probably doesn't represent the standout feature of the hotel. The only real standout criticism of the spa was the water seemed a little on the cold side.
We didn't eat in the hotel, however we did enjoy some of the lounges whilst we were there. I have to say they were a real treat, really nicely decorated, comfortable and nice atmosphere and ambiance. The staff were so friendly and hospitable.
Overall such an excellent stay, and if we could we would have given it 6 stars. My only regret was not either getting there earlier in the day or taking the next day off work to enjoy some of the grounds. I think it will be just a matter of time until we come here again, at which point I will be taking the next day off!!

Dear Rob3_142 Thank you for taking the time to post a review following on your recent stay. I am delighted you enjoyed your surprise birthday experience, and it is wonderful to hear your hot tub suite was suitably comfortable and relaxing. We enjoy making birthday visits extra special and it is very kind of you to share your feedback with us. I am however sorry that you felt the water in the swimming pool was a little on the cool side, we set the temperature mindful of different swimming activities namely, leisure, water aerobics and children’s swimming times. This temperature hopefully accommodates everyone, but I appreciate for some it is a little on the cool side and I only hope it did not detract from your overall enjoyment of the spa. Hopefully we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Chewton Glen in the not too distant future. Warm regards, Clive McNish General Manager

I booked at the last minute to stay one night at Chewton Glen for our daughter's birthday. Emma at reservations was extremely helpful when I spoke to her on the Sunday evening & she kindly phoned me on the Monday morning when she noticed I'd made a booking online. The booking offer included a possible room upgrade (which we had as we were offered a Junior Suite on arrival) use of the Spa, complimentary newspaper, £100 resort credit. full English breakfast & a complimentary half bottle of champagne. The Junior suite was wonderful & spacious & extremely comfortable. My only 2 gripes were there was no complimentary half bottle of champagne in our room & despite mentioning this several times to members of staff it did not appear. A member of staff called Paris phoned & spoke to my daughter claiming he knew nothing of this offer. I then went on the "offers" page of Chewton Glen website & showed it to Lauren on reception via my mobile. I mentioned that we would use the £100 resort credit towards afternoon tea at £45pp & booked it for 4pm. I was therefore rather surprised to be presented with a bill for £107 for the tea. My daughter & I felt there was a lack of communication between reception & the dining-room. The afternoon tea was one of the best we've ever had, although I was surprised to be charged for a bottle of water. The spa facilities were wonderful. I am unsure whether we could have attended any classes as this was not mentioned. We both loved the atmosphere & decor & the friendly staff & guests. Catherine & Lauren on reception deserve a special mention as they were both so welcoming & our waiter at the afternoon tea was excellent too. Would love to return one day.

We booked for five nights in August unfortunately due ti a family crisis we could only stay for four. The hotel is stunning on first sight with beautiful grounds and a lovely croquet lawn, but on closer inspection it needs a lot spent on it, we has an Estate room with a balcony, but we overlooked the hotel reception entrance and there was not a good view, there was an overflow pipe from a room above which was dripping constantly, we reported it and thought it had been fixed but it started again once the room was occupied, it was probably a malfunctioning ball cock in the toilet which would have been simple to fix. We ordered a bottle of champagne in our room which provided just 4 glasses from a smaller than usual bottle which was priced at £85. The room was perfectly adequate and very clean with a very comfortable bed, sofa and an armchair and the bathroom was great with a large bath double basins and a separate power shower, plenty of toiletries and towels and robes. Minibar was stocked with water and soft drinks which were complimentary. We ate on 3 evenings in the dining room where the service was good but prices were very high and the quality of the food was not wonderful, we ate on our fourth night at The Kitchen which was fantastic and we booked again for our fifth night but had to cancel. Our main problem was with the huge amount of food wastage, there were lots of families with children and every morning at breakfast small children were visiting the buffet and returning with quantities of food which they were never going to eat, 6 pancakes on one morning which were picked over and left, we were sitting right opposite one such table which was piled high with wasted food. Perhaps these affluent young parents felt that they need to get their moneys worth but we found it disgraceful. There was an outdoor pool and the weather was very hot but no chance of a swim there as it was full of children and water fights going on, the pool in the spa was like a sauna and we could not breathe let alone swim. I suppose we should have expected lots of families as it was school holidays but naively perhaps thought that at these prices there may have been fewer of them. We had pre dinner drinks on the patio outside the bar, waiter service but no little touches like paper mats, or a few nibbles to go with the drinks the tables were generally in need of refurbishment and looking up at the windows which overlooked this area we could see that the wooden frames were also in need. We have learned from our experience that five star accommodation is not all it is cracked up to be.

Dear Whitlingham, Thank you for your review and for sharing detailed feedback of your stay. I am happy to hear about the experiences you enjoyed but obviously disappointed that other areas of your stay fell below expectations. Please accept my sincere apologies for these shortfalls. For your champagne order, a full bottle should have been in your room on arrival and if this was not the case then I will gladly ensure that we refund you, please reach out at the email address below. In regards to maintenance, we are constantly working via an annual programme to ensure we make upgrades to facilities that require them, however this does not excuse the fact that you have identified areas which perhaps detracted from your stay and we will ensure that these are addressed as a priority. It is true that August is a popular month with families and now, at the end of the school holidays, we are starting to see that change, particularly on weekdays. If you do choose to return we would be happy to recommend other times of the year which you may enjoy more. We would of course like the opportunity to welcome you back and if you are able to return then I would be grateful if you could contact me personally on cmcnish@chewtonglen.com so that I can manage your booking. Best regards, Clive McNish General Manager

It’s difficult to know where to begin writing a review for The Chewton Glen as I don’t want to miss anyone out. My wife and I have just arrived home from celebrating our third wedding anniversary at the hotel. We were married here in 2021. It’s the staff that make this place the more than well deserved five stars it has. There are not enough stars for the level of service, the way they make you feel like the only guests, the beautiful rooms and surroundings. We are at The Kitchen the food and service both wonderful. The little touches like they knew it was our wedding anniversary and so greeted us with a glass of champagne, we arrived to an upgraded room!! The beautiful cocktails before dinner. I also need to mention Ellen in the spa who is THE best pedicure person I have ever seen (and I’ve had a lot!) if you are staying and love pampering your nails… she is the person you must book with! My wife had a detox focus wrap/massage and raved about this too. We stayed in one of the junior suites… immaculate and well stocked with little treats for us too. Thank you Chewton Glen for exceeding our expectations once again. We have arrived home fully relaxed and will be back again soon x
