It provides a rural get away from the confines of a COVID l9 and is delightfully non-commercial. It is a 2 hour drive from Columbus but there is almost no commercial development around the lodge. Note: bring your own supplies.
Our room was clean and well maintained. It was large and had a very comfortable couch for TV viewing. The bathroom was also clean and up to date. The bed was very comfortable and provided a great nights sleep. The Wifi was free but moderately slow
The dining room overlooks the lake. You can eat your pancakes while watching the boats scurry along the lake. No billboards or other signs of commerce. All in all it was a very restful and restorative venue for the weekend . But remember to bring your own entertainment.
Overall, this hotel is very dated, facilities in disrepair (crumbling walkways), neglected landscaping, etc. The hotel is way overpriced for what you get, and our experience was very disappointing. I would not recommend the Burr Oak Lodge.
We stayed in a cabin. Perhaps in the summer if you are out boating or partying all day and only want a room with 4 walls and a bed, it would be fine, but we were looking for a cozy, "cabin in the woods" getaway to relax with family and this wasn't great. The cabins are nearly completely bare other than bed linens and a couple dishtowels. Not even a sponge to wash dishes (required, and there is no dishwasher FYI), no salt and pepper, and bowls weren't even big enough to hold a can of soup. The furniture in the living room is probably the most uncomfortable furniture I've ever sat in. Impossible to relax even though we balled the bed blankets up and tried to make pillows out of them. The shower doesn't even have a single shelf on which to set soap or shampoo, you have to put everything on the shower floor. Shower head not adjustable and sprays right in your face if you are short. Also the hot water quit working a couple days into our stay. When I say stripped down I mean stripped down - you would need to bring everything in your whole house/kitchen to be able to make it habitable for more than crashing for sleep.
Pluses: it was very quiet as it's extremely remote (roads there are very winding and hilly - my kid got car sick). The heat was very responsive, and the roads were kept clear even during a bad storm. Sorry, but I won't be back to this property.
The lodge is over 50 years old now and seems like there are still some original parts.
Our room although overall clean has old school HVAC and windows that crank open. Cold air and wood burning smoke from the cabins got in and we could smell it all night…worse when the floor unit sucked in air from the outside whenever the heat came on. The bathroom was freezing cold because heat never got into to it. The ceiling air vent needs a good cleaning as does some black around the shower.
The pool room was out of towels and housekeeping never picked up the used towels our entire stay. The clock on the wall didn’t work and neither did some ceiling lights. The roof leaks.
The management is clearly not working to their full potential. The pool was advertised to open at 7am everyday. We got up early walked all the way to the pool and the door was locked. The guy at the front said he couldn’t help and we need to wait for the real front desk staff at 8am. Returned after 8am to be told they don’t open the pool until 9am, but was unaware the maintenance guy already opened it. We were also not told at check in that their restaurant had a VERY limited menu due to an electric mishap. We found out from the waitress. It was already late and nowhere nearby to go so we got food we wouldn’t have ordered normally. They offer free coffee in the lobby until 11am. But it’s easier to drink with cups. No cups…and staff who seem content sitting around oblivious to what they could be doing to make the stay better. We even heard a maintenance guy complaining about his job saying “I really need to quit.”
The place is really cool but it needs better staff and some attention to upkeep.
We started with the cheese and pretzels. Nice and warm served with a white cheese. They were great.
My son had the Burr Oak burger and homemade chips...he liked it and said it was good. My wife had the veggie burger with coleslaw. She liked it too. I had beer-battered fish with a dinner salad and coleslaw. It was good but I didn't care for the slaw. The service was good. Nothing fancy here. Looked like they offer a full bar too.
The rooms are dark, the bathroom is small, but the views from the great room and restaurant are beautiful. The food was good, but at least we were told when we sat down that they only had one cook so it would be awhile.
Only stayed one night and left early the next day so didn't get to explore too much.
