Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We enjoyed a lovely weekend at Barking Owl Retreat. The owners are friendly and so are the animals living on the property. It was a quiet peaceful escape, in a lovely cottage, with blue sky days and starry night skies. The cottage is clean, well equipped with everything you need (including a heater for the cool winter nights). We enjoyed our stay at Barking Owl Retreat and will return next year!

We visited Barking Owl Retreat for our wedding anniversary. This is an ideal place if you are looking to get away from it all. With only two cabins in the property you can have all the privacy and serenity you want. The cabins themselves are cosy and warm, decorated with a rustic style. The back deck is a beautiful place to have breakfast and enjoy your complimentary local coffee. Highlight of the cabin was the spa bath though. Big, deep and with back massage jets. Two thumbs way up for that. Our host Tanya was very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. I would definitely stay again.

We really enjoyed our time here and the hosts were wonderful. Great for couples who want time out with peace and quite to reconnect. The cabins were comfortable, very clean and cozy. We received the breakfast basket and booked a massage which made our experience even better. We highly reccomend this B&B and will be back again.

From the moment we arrived we were warmly greeted. We had ordered the breakfast hamper and found in full of food. It was definitely worth the money. Had a veiw over one of the dams and we could see the cows roaming around. The house was very clean and tidy. Large bathroom, comfortable bed and the kitchen was stocked with all that you could ask for with condiments, cooking equipment and a BBQ on the veranda. We were so impressed that we booked another stay while we we there.

We spent 2 nights at Barking Owl Retreat, and as Cairns locals who regularly seek accommodation on the Tablelands, we both agreed that this is one of the best experiences we've had up that way. As previous writers have noted, the setting and views take your breath away and that the property is at the end of a rural road ensures privacy, solitude and quiet. Despite the feeling of 'getting away from it all', the delightful towns and attractions the Tablelands is so famous for are all only a relatively short drive away. Tanya is a delightful hostess and she is absolutely fastidious about maintaining quality and cleanliness. She has a real eye for detail and we could fault neither the presentation of our cabin nor the quality of the facilities. A walk to the dam is a must. We got the open fire going and found it hard to drag ourselves away. We'll definitely be going back and we highly recommend this accommodation.

If you'd like time to slow and a chance to recharge, this is your place. A quick but relaxing stay of two nights, it was the perfect 'away from it all' getaway. Relax on the back patio with a glass of red as you watch the sun go down and listen to your steak sizzle on the Webber. There are so many places to see and things to do on the tablelands and the Barking Owl is the perfect location, twenty minutes to half an hour from lots of tourist sights. Or if you want an opportunity to just chat, sleep and take a break from the world, this is it too. The Goanna breakfast hamper was packed with goodies. We enjoyed a BBQ style breakfast of eggs, bacon, mushroom and tomatoes both mornings. Generous supplies and quality products. All you need is provided, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, sauces etc so you can self cater if you wish. The free gift of tablelands coffee was appreciated- we enjoyed a cuppa on the back deck for breakfast and afternoon tea. Forget about the world. And just be...at the Barking Owl Retreat.
