The thing I liked most was the friendly staff the receptionist, chap in the spa and both of the waitresses in the restaurant were lovely made us feel very welcome. The rooms are as to be expected standard hotel rooms. The spa is nice, warm and clean. The first night the food in the restaurant was gorgeous the same for the breakfast the next day. However the breakfast on the second day wasn't very nice infact inedible, I had the pancakes which I'm sure had been left out a couple of hours, rock solid and impossible to cut. Would we go back possibly.

Believe it or not the title to my little soliloquy is an actual quote from one of the waiting on staff. We dined here so can’t talk about accommodation or spa but the experience we had was (and we had to give it a lot of thought to describe)….bizarre and hostile. We arrived at about quarter past 8 and we’re seated promptly which is all very promising. We ordered drinks and food after a solid 20 minute wait. The drinks then took their time getting to us as well but hey….it was kind of busy. The waiter that we had was overall a bit rude but after having forgotten one of the drinks from our round I went up to the bar to go and ask for it. That’s when the waiter grabbed me by arm and said “obviously I am not good enough for you”. I tried to laugh it off - to which he said “you and your friends can enjoy your drinks in the lounge if you wish”. We hadn’t finished our desserts at this stage but whatever. Having put the spoon down after a lovely sticky toffee pud - a brief swig of beer was consumed before the bill arrived. We hadn’t asked for the bill. We were thinking maybe another round or some coffees but no…‘twas clear we were no longer welcome in the restaurant. We then went to the lounge we’d heard so much about. We sat and finished our drinks and asked if it were possible to get a taxi back to where we were staying. My friend was given a list of - I kid you not - upwards of 10 numbers for him to “give a try”. How does a spa hotel not have a direct dial to a cab firm? It was after 11pm in the Lake District, most cabbies are in bed at that time. So it was an adrenaline rush of taxi roulette I suppose? Also found it quite ironic that an establishment that had made it so clear it didn’t want us there made it harder work for us to leave! Also - not the fault of the hotel but one of the other customers went up to one of our other friends in the toilet and shouted at her for “looking like she’s wearing her pyjamas”. She was wearing a dress with tights and ankle boots so not sure what attire she goes to slumberland in. Food was quite nice.

30 empty outside tables should have been a clue. Sunny Sunday afternoon. Ordered 2 coffees. No queue at bar and 2 receptionists doing nothing We are too busy and only serving residents. It took them longer to tell me that than serve me lol Won’t be going back. Don’t deserve my money Do they deserve yours??

Undoubtedly in a great spot on the banks of the river and, weather permitting, nice outdoor seating areas. Check-in was good and professional. The "lovely" room was in fact just "OK". A bit tired in places and not the most comfortable bed. Bathroom also a bit basic and a problem getting hot water next morning. On the food front the chateaubriand served with chips, tomato, green beans, mushrooms and 2 sauces was excellent. Starters of parfait and chipolatas were OK. Couple of glasses of wine served nicely. Next morning breakfast service was a bit of a nightmare as we waited far too long for the cooked element and also received cereal etc. before any drinks had arrived. Food itself was fine. Spa area was very clean with small pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Robes in room were handy but no sign of slippers. Checkout could have been more professional. Would expect to be presented with details of extras bill (there were quite a few) rather than just be asked if it sounded about right!! As others have said they are adding an extension so there is building work on site which is especially visible when parking. Hope they also modernise existing rooms and update service a bit too.

The Swan Hotel & Spa is easy to find and has plenty of parking. It's in a lovely spot away from the busier areas but with sturdy boots and a car everything is accessible! Hotel is nicely decorated, modern and slightly different from the norm in a good way. We stayed in a 'Lovely' room which was, you guessed it, lovely. Spacious, clean comfortable with all the amenities you'd want - including a bath to soothe our aching legs. Plenty of spots to sit with a drink in the evenings, and a pink pool table too, though the marks in the cloth, ceiling and wall suggests younger guests have used it to it's limit - fair enough perhaps. The Spa is undergoing an expansion but the current pool and jacuzzi was acceptable - probably not enough to warrant the "and Spa" part of the hotel name but they have a sign outside showing a £7m investment which will rectify that. The treatment rooms looked indulgent and relaxing, though we didn't partake. The steam room was good, unfortunately the sauna was out of action but it appeared temporary. The restaurant was good, we were impressed with both breakfast and evening meals. A good selection of quality food, and a wide range of options. We enjoyed everything, and we tried quite a lot over our stay! Staff were great, welcoming and courteous and although we only had one or two reasons to ask for anything, when we did the service was fabulous. We'd go back, so definitely recommended.
