Value
Location, location, location. YHA Black Sail has it. Remote and accessible only on foot, it’s a rural retreat that lovers of the great outdoors can normally only dream about. Located in a traffic-free valley that is being returned to a ‘wild’ state, it’s as tranquil as a stay in the Lakes gets.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Black Sail is unique, it's position in the Lakes and the need for a walk in ensure that. The facilities are far from basic and we enjoyed a wonderful full breakfast each day. The evening meal main course could perhaps be a little more varied but I understand that there are challenges given the location. Aaron was a consummate chef/host/engineer while we were at the hut. The ability to hire towels is useful as it means one less thing to carry, and I'm not sure it is detailed on the website?

The people giving bad reviews to this place seem to have not read any details in advance, so if you are expecting a hotel this is not for you! If you are expecting a mountain hut then this is a great one - really cosy and with great meals, and an honesty snack/drinks kitchen open all day. Huge well done to YHA for offering good gluten free snacks and meals - I was ridiculously excited to find that all their sausages are gf! Aaron the warden was very welcoming, looked after us all really well and was very conscientious in wrangling the eccentric power systems of an off-grid hostel. Brilliant place.

This is a beautiful, unique place at the top of Ennerdale, below Great Gable. Getting there on foot takes some effort. The accommodation is simple and limited by it's remote location, but what is provided is very good and the host was welcoming & helpful. I love the fact that it is so remote and for that I am happy to go without a phone and go outside to use the bathroom. I'd recommend it to anyone who feels the same. On the other hand, if you like comfort, luxury and convenience it's probably not the place for you.

We booked this YHA a year ago and paid in full. Sadly when we rang just three weeks before just to check we were told that the YHA had cancelled our booking without telling us. As this accommodation was part of a coast to coast walk this left us without accommodation. The YHA were very apologetic and rebooked us at the YHA at buttermere which gave us a very awkward walk adjustment. They also offered some financial compensation. As we were walking down to Honnister we passed a large group who said they were heading to Blacksail - obviously they were the reason we were cancelled - a bigger group means more money.
If you have a booking here I strongly recommend you phone to check that your booking is secure.

Hi there. I'm sorry you had a negative experience. Unfortunately Black Sail was moved onto Exclusive Hire as it could not be permanently manned during that period of time. I'm sorry this meant that you missed out but we're slowly making sure all hostels can open up and function as normal. I hope this doesn't deter you from staying with us in the future and look forward to welcoming you at Black Sail once again.

Staying at Black Sail is an experience that you should not miss. Its unique location in Ennerdale on the Coast to Coast walk ensures a steady stream of interesting travellers, all willing to exchange stories about their adventures. We were very well looked after by the hostel staff - Rachel and Simon, then Tom - for our two night stay, who provided tasty meals to accompany the local beers that were available. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, will recommend Black Sail to our friends and plan to come again. .

Loved this place, good challenge for the kids to get to and so worth it once there. Stunning views, cosy building and great staff. Can’t wait to go back at winter. The bunk beds are cosy in family room just needs a little more space. All other facilities provided are good and shower class. Great night thank you

Our party was 2 families, each with teenaged kids. We hiked from Wasdale over pillar and down to Black Sail YHA for the night. The staff were very welcoming and the sausage and mash followed by waffles and ice cream was exactly what we needed. We had an 8-bedded dorm which was cosy and comfortable. A delicious cooked breakfast the next morning set us up for another great walk over Great gable. Staying here is an experience not to be missed!

We hired the hostel and took our whole family to Black Sail YHA . We have always loved the location but this time was special and the hostel warden made it even more so, Tom was excellent with all the cooking and everything. We have been to this hostel almost every year and it never lets us down (although sometimes the weather does). One of the attractions is the fact that you have to walk to it there is no vehicle access.

Wow! This unique mountain hideaway gives the authentic experience of a night in the mountains, with the luxury of a warm cosy bed, shower, proper toilet & excellent cooked food! The Katsu chicken curry is ace. Don't expect silver service dining, but excellent, clean basic amenities in a wonderful remote location. Loved it! 😍

Quaint hostel in stunning location.
Excellent warden and a perfect environment to relax and soak up the tranquility of a traffic free valley.
Added bonus was gluten free beer and brownie for the coeliac in our party - both were well appreciated by the non-coeliac contingent, too!

Black sail is catered for - someone is there to cook breakfast and dinner, you can help yourself to tea and coffee , milk is in the fridge which you have to pay for of course.

Hi. There are 2 toilets but only one has a mirror (helpful for those shaving!). There is one shower which has plenty of hot water. My advice is to shower first then enjoy the views as there can be a queue!
