The location is incredible next to stunning beaches.
The property is beautiful and relaxing.
Mena and Ken are so thoughtful hosts.
Their homebaked breakfasts served on a big patio are delicious.
I highly recommend this bed and breakfast.
The house is also fairly old and very “ noisy”. Lots of squeaky floors and water sounds through out. For the price I would have expected a little more.
I travel to sechelt frequently and can say that it is very unlikely that I would book here again.
It’s not terrible.... there are just way better places to stay than here.
In the entrance section there is sherry available foe a quick soothing drink. Nice touch.
The B&B is located in a great position. Beautiful view of the ocean. Nice waterfront walk and close to some shops and snack places.
Heidi is a very gracious host and attends to her guests very well.
This is worth recommending as a place to stay if you want to have a vacation in Sechelt.
Frankly, this 3-room B&B is a study in contrasts from some very nice touches all the way down to disappointments and its difficult to put a handle on whether it rates a 3 or a 4, as it has aspects of both. We made the mistake of booking through Booking.com without checking out Trip Advisor and I can only say, shame on us for not doing so, because several of the reviews on Trip Advisor very much reinforce our own mixed feelings about this place.
A Trip Advisor reviewer going under the handle of "horsewoman21" wrote a very good, detailed recent review (this is written in late July, 2017) about this B&B which very closely coincides with our feelings and observations.
So rather than ramble on, we'll list bullet points for the pros and cons of Davis Bay and then you can make up your own mind.
PROS:
*Good location right across the beach from the bay with a good view of the water and the distant land areas. Also a good place to run across the highway and view the sunsets.
*We had the largest of the two front rooms facing the water and it was spacious and rather nicely decorated. It had a queen bed which was OK, a closet, sofa and coffee table and a sidebar with a TV.
*Big covered porch/sundeck that ran the length of the house with tables and chairs for the occupants of both front rooms.
*Off street parking.
*A choice of 4 different full breakfast options, which is unusual.
*Thre is a very nice, long concrete path next to the beach with several benches along the way for resting and looking at the view.
*There was a decanter of Sherry and glassses on a little table in the hall, and if one likes Sherry, that would be a nice touch.
CONS:
*Heidi, the owner, should take a refresher course in Hospsitality 101 on being a B&B hostess, especially on how to greet her guests when they arrive. Her greeting was telling us we could not park on the lawn. No hi, or hello, or welcome, or "you must be the ____________". She took off to have drinks with a friend on the upper deck and gave us the vague impression that we were an interruption in her day as opposed to being the reason for her work.
*She showed us to our room, pointed to instructions on how to use the fireplace (this was mid July!), gave us a paper to write down our breakfast choices, gave us a key to the sliding door to the deck and the front door, and then left.
*Speaking of the keys, I tried the front door (acutally its on the side) to try to get into the house and it didn't work because there is also a keypad which must control the locking/unlocking. Good thing we came back from a quick dinner while she was still up and the door was still unlocked.
*Unlike the vast majority of B&Bs that we have stayed in, there was no binder of instructions on how to work the TV (we never could get it working), nor was there any list of nearby restaurants or recommendations or at least their menus or brochures, which is just laziness -- or ignorance -- on the part of the owner. We have been in the travel and hospitality business as travel writers and promoters for 30 years and the vast, vast majority of country inns and B&Bs have local information to share. We have stayed in untold dozens of inns and B&Bs and wrote articles about many of them. She still does not offer this basic service, despite other guests pointing this out.
*To get to the beach area, you have to be brave and fast -- you have to dash across the busy coastal highway whenever you see an opening, and I mean dash, not stroll.
*While the beach walk is nice, the beach itself is not. it is very rocky and slimy in places with the usual green goo, not a beach for having a big beach party putting down your blanket and digging your toes in the sand.
*The off-street parking is very tight for just three cars in parallel and a separate small space that is paved over. When we first turned in the driveway in our classic, restored 1957 T-Bird, we didn't think we could fit between the two cars already there without the possibility of door banging, hence the attempt to park partially on her lawn. But after being told we couldn't, we did park OK between the two existing cars without a problem. If you drive in front first, you have to back out and then make a quick turn to the right on the narrow shoulder while cars come whizzing around a bend just a few feet away from you.
*Getting back to the lack of hospitality thing, we were tired and wanted to collapse on the porch with a glass of good bourbon in an Old Fashioned, but when we asked her about ice, she looked inside the little refrigerator near the door and pointed out the one ice cube tray with only 3 or 4 ice cubes in it, and told us to drive to a store up the way and buy a bag of ice. She did not even offer to bring down a bowl of ice to us to get us started which would have been the normal, hospitable thing to do! Nor had she even bothered to fill up the ione and only ice cube tray! It is little niceities of the personal touch that can make a B&B a fun, homey, even delightful experience, but that was sadly lacking here.
We took copious notes of all the places we stayed while we were at each place so our memories would be enhanced by our notes. We paid $135 plus tax for our room which we think was a little on the high side for what we got and the bottom line is that despite the good view, we would not stay here again, as there are too many other places along the road that offer equally good views, and hopefully, better hospitality.
On arrival she answered the door and as other guests have commented in their reviews, there was no welcoming greeting. Instead we were told that she hadn't checked her books that day, had forgotten we were coming and had put other guests in our room. She moved their belongings out into one of the much larger rooms at the front and we were put in the Guest Room which overlooked the garden. This was the room we had booked and although it was comfortable it was quite cramped for 2 people. it would not be possible for 2 people to have a breakfast tray in the room as there is only one chair at the corner desk.
The shower room was very small but very well stocked with toiletries.
Heidi suggested places for us to eat that evening and they were very good suggestions.
We were given a breakfast form to fill in and breakfast was freshly cooked although I must say it was dfisappointing not to be offered a coffee refill on either morning.
Other guests have also commented on the lack of warmth on leaving the property. We had settled our bill the night before so once we had finished breakfast it was just a quick " goodbye then" and we were left to just go back downstairs and see ourselves out.
We were not aware that sherry was there for visitors if they wanted any.
The property is indeed in a lovely location and Heidi will give ideas for walks if you ask. It is a very busy main road though and we were glad to be at the back overlooking the garden.
This property has so much potential but it would have been nicer if we had felt more welcome and valued as customers and visitors.
I was automatically directed to Booking.com when I looked up Davis Bay B&B, and completed their review request when I got home. Only the positive points were published and none of the negative ones or any of my suggestions. I feel that's improper advertising. I will never use Booking.com again.
