Phil and Maria van Wegen took over the iconic Marree Hotel on 25th October 2021 and now operate this in conjunction with their Arid Air scenic flights & outback tours business. With classic outback service and world class hospitality, cold beer on tap, clean and comfortable accommodation, a fantastic dinner menu, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre scenic flights and outback tours, the Marree Hotel offers much more than you would expect in this remote area. The Marree Hotel has an old style bar, 3 dining rooms, a cafe, a swimming pool, en-suite/air-conditioned cabins and traditional style hotel rooms, along with the 'Tom Kruse' / Back of Beyond museum collection, the John McDouall Stuart room, a stunning Lake Eyre mural and over 130 years of history. Ideally situated at the end of the bitumen (from the south) and at the junction of the iconic Birdsville and Oodnadatta tracks the hotel dominates the skyline for miles.

Long ago, well not so long ago (2015) when there was a dirt road to Marree we made the trip to town.
A review of the hotel was probably coloured by the fact that it was a fair drive on a dirt track. It was the first time we had ventured to Marree and it was hot.
What a difference 6 years makes and while the cats away the mice will play.
It was a good trip back then, we stayed at the Marree Hotel with all its history and had an upstairs room in keeping with the experience, the old hotel.
So, this trip was to have my daughter have the same experience as we did back then.
On this trip, the beer is still cold, the food is still exceptional but that is where it stopped.
First problem was the double bed mattress, what a shocker should have been tossed out before federation in 1901, I came close to having the springs embed their pattern in my back, side, and butt.

House keeping leaves a lot to be desired. A vac out of the room would have removed the iron ore lump under foot, maybe not that big but removal was needed.

Second, no dunny paper in the gents, none to be found and at 2am there is no one to talk to and in the ladies, I found out the next morning there was one empty roll and bugger all on the other to be used and again none to be found.

Thirdly, a smell of what I though was cat whizz on the carpet on the way to the gents shower/toilets unfortunately I only found this out after all was closed for the night and I suspect management was tucked into a comfy bed no doubt.

Speaking with Joe the next morning and passing on our view of things, an education was had during our conversation, having mentioned to Joe that we wanted our daughter to experience the trip up to Marree and stay at the hotel including in an upstairs room, the full experience, not a cheaper experience.

Joe mentioned to us that and in his words “I wouldn’t call it an experience”.

To Joe’s credit he did offer to change the mattress or give us another room, but the damage was done. At that stage I could not have given a rat’s. If I could have moved a booking in the Flinders one day forward, I would have been gone.

Joe do tell, what did you find in the upstairs Tea Room?
Pics are worth a thousand words. (house keeping)
I don't have the heart to post them.
A private email may be best for this should you choose.

Maz and Phil I wish you well in what you do down the track.

Hello Time Traveller. We could go on with all the cliche’d responses and proportion blame on COVID etc etc. But we thought it best to put it out there like it is. We appreciate any feedback and, this is our first ‘negative’ response in 10 years. Yes, We have had a dream run at the Hotel and our Tourism Awards are testimony to the reputation we have established and we are pursuing a firm policy to build on that with our new staff every season. And what a season this has started out to be. The Australia wide staff shortage has had a dramatic impact on our service delivery. All the staff you experienced are working as hard as they can and under the circumstances they have been our saviour. We have new staff coming this week and we anticipate a sense of normality will be in place within the next 10 days. But that’s no excuse for your “mattress” and the “lack of essentials”. Yep! Slipped up there, no excuses. Immediate rectification already done. It’s the good thing about “feedback”. If we know what your concerns are (mattress) we can fix it. The toiletries, a total oversight - will not happen again. Maz an I have always strived to “exceed visitor expectations” as we did 6 years earlier and blew your socks off!!! I hope we have a chance to redeem ourselves in the future? Joe and Jess are doing an amazing job. They have our full support. They have built their own reputation as “the next generation” and the Marree Hotel is in brilliant hands to provide the ultimate outback experience. (We’ll be the hotel next week and I am personally going to try every mattress!!!) Thank you for taking the time to respond. If you ever visit again, please call me directly - your next visit is on us! Thank you.

Having viewed the Hotel website we were a bit disappointed in staying there.
Reading other people's reviews , which are generally very good, our visit didn't quite match our expectations.
As the hotel accommodation has shared bathrooms we booked one f their cabins at back of the hotel. The cabin was alright but the area between the cabins and hotel looked very dilapidated and unattractive with mess lying around .
Having arrived after a long trip from Coober Pedy the bar area didn't look very inviting and wanting to eat in the hotel we were told the restaurant was fully booked and there was no other restaurant in town. After expressing our concern as quests of the hotel they reluctantly agreed we could we could eat in the hotel but only at 6pm in the very unattractive breakfast room.
The meal was OK and then walking back to our cabin at 7 pm we saw the restaurant only had very few people dining. Why were we seated in the restaurant?
The hotel website gives a very false impression.

We are very sorry the Hotel did not live up to your expectations. We try our hardest to ensure that the entire Hotel area is tidy and inviting to guests, given our location in the Outback and the struggles that naturally throws up for us sometimes the maintenance of the outside areas is difficult to upkeep. I can assure you that we do address this on a regular basis, and have staff employed to maintain the upkeep of the hotel. In regards to the dinner bookings, this is a new system that has been introduced over the last few weeks to help us deal with staff shortages in the kitchen, it is new system and we have had some teething issues with this, and I am very sorry that this was your experience. We try our hardest to feed anyone that comes to the hotel looking for dinner and pride ourselves on offering exceptional service to our customers. Please be assured this has been addressed with staff going forwards. In regards to your seating for dinner, we try to spread diners out over the three dinning rooms - breakfast room, John McDowell Stuart Room and Tom Kruise Room to stay within our Covid restrictions, and if a large group is booked into eat in one of those rooms later in the evening we don't allocate those tables prior to their arrival so patrons are not having to rush their dinner. Having said that, we are very sorry your experience was not to the standard we would hope, and would like to welcome you back to the Hotel in the future to show you how exceptional our Hotel in the Outback can be.

We were not sure what to expect in such an isolated location but were pleasantly surprised. We had an ensuite cabin which was comfortable and roomy and included a kettle for tea/coffee making. A continental self-service breakfast was also provided. The hotel seemed to be popular and a good dinner menu was available at reasonable prices. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel and wish we had longer there.

Great rooms, great bar staff - George- the bar is real nice in an authentic old school bar with a lot of history of yesteryear and a real old Australian outback experience the dining room is great with some good history photos etc.
I would say the recommended beef stew was good in flavour but feels like a child portion @ $26.00 feels like not enough food too many people.
This could and should be addressed.

I’ve mixed feelings about this place. The pub is pretty cool, and has a lot of charm, and the dining rooms are really well looked after in keeping with the heritage of the place.

As a family of 5 we stayed in two of the pub rooms upstairs which were clean and comfy, and the bathrooms were well maintained. Internet, for those who don’t have Telstra or Optus, is $10 for 2 hours.

We had a nice meal which was fairly basic but was tasty enough and what you wound expect in a remote area. Drinks after on the Verandah with other travelers was fun. Sadly, upon heading up to bed we were yelled at to stop making so much noise as the floorboards are so creaky and it was ruining it for people downstairs. I’m all for being asked to keep the noise down, if justified, and am very respectful BUT we had literally only just headed upstairs and it was another family who had been running around. Being yelled at on its own is not nice, let alone when it was nothing to do with us. The next morning at breakfast, we were made to feel an inconvenience (or she was just pissed off at the noise we (hadn’t) made.

Rest of the staff and the male owner were great; really friendly and super helpful. I’ll put it down to it being the end of a long and difficult season, but sadly did tarnish the stay a little for us. However, I do recommend the place. The two resident dogs are an absolute delight.

Stayed here after a muddy trip down the Birdsville track. Room was spacious and clean. All ammenities worked .
Had a meal in the pub which was really good then played darts and chatted with the locals.
Good stay even had a bonus storm during the early hours which washed some of the mud off my 4wd.
I have stayed at the Marree hotel before, this time it has new owners who were friendly and helpful as well as the previous owners. I have no hesitation in recommending the Marree hoel for a place to stay and wish the new owners all the best in their new venture

The welcome was great and that was about the only positive we felt from the hotel. After staying in William Creek and the staff being super friendly, we felt that we were a burden to the staff at Marree Hotel, only one member of staff had any real customer service. To add to this the room was freezing overnight which was expected, but when we put the heating on it stank the room out of someone else’s body odour, there were also not enough additional blankets for the number of people in our room.

We were up reasonably early and went into the hotel for the continental breakfast, to which we greeted by we don’t do breakfast. Eventually another member of staff agreed and said the prepackaged pack should have been given to us on arrival. All of this was a real inconvenience to the staff as they had to find keys and open up another part of the hotel and made us feel very unwelcome.

Overall, we did not enjoy this hotel and would not recommend staying here if you can help it, there are better and more friendly options.

I am very sorry to hear of your experience here at the hotel, and very disappointed with the service you have been provided. We pride ourselves on offering true Outback hospitality and this was not you have received, I can assure you this is being addressed with the hotel staff. If you could send us an email directly to info@marreehotel.com.au to let us know which room you were staying in so the air-con situation can be rectified that would be most appreciated. In regards to breakfast, I am sorry for the experience you received. The 'Breakfast Packs' have been introduced this year due to Covid-19 restrictions on buffets and self service breakfast (ie shared cereals, breads, toasters and urns) which are not currently accepted. These should have been provided to you upon Check-In which I am very sorry they were not. I truly hope that one day you will return to the Marree Hotel and we can show you how good our classic outback hospitality truly is.

For $130 I expected to have a hot shower (cold), working TV (not), a place to hang stuff (there was a locked cupboard) and somewhere to heat food (no microwave or any place to heat food and not a plate in sight). There is a kettle in a common room to use with tea and milk that’s all. There’s a bed lamp that about 2 metres from the bed so not conducive reading. Beds clean etc so not all bad. Hotel has nice dining area with historic photos etc so perhaps it will slowly improve

Sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay as we are constantly praised for our accommodation in the outback. We apologise if you had a cold shower, but did have an issue with the gas of which we were not aware as no one said anything to us either at the time but luckily we did discover it and then rectified immediately. Our previous guests may have locked the cupboard which unfortunately the cleaners have not picked up on. They also often change the TV settings and this could have easily be corrected immediately had you let us know. As for the cooking facilities, please note we are a hotel with shared amenities, and they are not apartments / self contained rooms hence no plates, microwaves or cooking facilities. Once again we are sorry and wish we had known at the time. But please feel free to call us to discuss. Owners - Maria & Phil van Wegen

Honestly just disgusted by how the staff were treated by mangers and owners.
They were belittled in front of customers for tiny reasons and it’s clear the problem is wide spread as not one staff member looked happy when working.
I was just passing through on the way north and stopped for a drink and refuel
In the few hours I was there I was 2 older women bothering the bar staff with such tiny things it was amazing
One was tell the bar staff how to clean a glass whilst she was cleaning it and had been for others for the last few minutes.
The chocolates and biscuits I bought were out of date and the food was horrid- you could just tell it’d been in a freezer for 6months.

Feel so sorry for the staff who work there cause you could see how demoralised these people were.
Management should be ashamed

If you contact the Marree Hotel direct on (08) 8675 8344 they will answer this question for you. You are giving them plenty of notice so you would expect they would have availability unless there is a special event on in the area. It is a unique experience and the meals were great when we were there!

Please feel free to drop us an email or give us a call and we can let you know availability. Best Regards, Andy
