Detailed Reviews
Stayed here recently and have to say it’s a great place with great staff. Small, they have five houses to stay in that range from a couple to a family and are perfect for getting away and into the forest a little. They also have an on-site restaurant that cooks a different Belizean food each night of the week for breakfast and dinner, each focused on the different ethnic groups who make up Belize. Btw, the food is delicious, the cooks do an outstanding job. Matter of fact the entire staff is outstanding! Security is nice, helpful, and friendly, housekeeping is outstanding too. Matter of fact I can’t say enough good about the entire staff. Also, had no problems having tour companies pick us up either at the roadway or even drive up to the resort (it’s about a quarter mile off the main road and the road is a little rough if you’re not familiar with country driving). I will warn that people with disabilities may have a harder time getting to their room due to stairs and the place is on slightly hilly terrain.

We spent 5 nights at the family treehouse, which is unlike any accommodations in which which we have ever stayed. You are literally situated in the middle of the jungle. I can’t even express how cool and unique the accommodations are - very spacious too.
The property is small and intimate with and you will enjoy incredible, personal service. The GM, Myra, helped me to plan my stay from the States over email. She was always quick to provide me with a response to my many questions and she provided invaluable guidance on which activities which be best for my family.
She did not steer us wrong and matched us up with Marcel, who has to be the best tour guide in all of Belize. Our family of 5 had him all to ourselves for 3 days and he showed us a side of Belize that we never would have seen had we driven to the tour sites on our own. On Myra’s suggestion, we did zip lining/cave tubing, the jungle pontoon tour and Xunantanich/ Barton Creek. Each day was better than the last. All were different and amazing.
Myra also hooked us up with Luis, the best ATM tour guide. We felt very safe in his capable hands.
The location is an ideal one for experiencing all that the jungle has to offer. The closest a town, San Ignacio, has a bunch of very good restaurants, but we found it hard to drag ourselves away from the restaurant at Amber Sunset. The breakfasts were filling, fresh and delicious and every night a different 3 course meal is served. The food is extraordinary and the best that you will find in the area.
There is no AC, which isn’t generally a problem, but we had a few nights where the heat made it a bit uncomfortable to sleep. The treehouse was meticulously clean, but with no AC, there is a constant musty odor that you need to get used to. Also, you are in the middle of the jungle, so you can’t completely escape from the bugs. However, don’t let these minor issues deter you from the experience of a lifetime at Amber Sunset!

We stayed in the Garifuna Treehouse on Jan 18 and 19/14 and would definitely return! The accommodations are very spacious with a swinging king size bed, a small table with chairs, a desk and chair, and a hammock! The bathroom is huge and modern with an oversize shower and an outdoor tub. The room was immaculately clean and had all the comforts of home. There are no windows in the room – just screens – so you fall asleep and wake-up to the sounds of the jungle. This resort is locally owned and operated and the family does a wonderful job of making their guests feel comfortable. Giovanni was a pleasure to deal with and we also enjoyed meeting his father, sister and grandmother (and the family dog Rambo). A highlight of our stay was the ATM tour – do not miss it! Giovanni arranged everything for us. Our guide was Luis (I believe he works for Destiny Tours) and we would highly recommend him. His incredible knowledge of the Maya history, the flora and fauna of Belize, the geology of the caves and his sense of humour made for a great day.

We stayed at Amber Sunset for one night and enjoyed our experience. We were the only guests there and had the property all to ourselves. The staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs. We had a drink by the swimming pool and enjoyed dinner at their restaurant which was simple but very tasty and accommodating to my vegetarian preferences!
Our room was cosy with a large outdoor bathtub. We found it quite fun to sleep on a suspended bed, which was a first for us but we found it quite confortable!
A nice place to stay on your way to the ATM caves!

We spent 4 days in this unbelievable resort. We stayed in one of the cabins with the swing bed. The outdoor shower was amazing. Their are many steps to climb so you need to be in fair shape but boy is it worth it. The food was gourmet local cuisine at very very reasonable prices. It has a small swimming pool with bar.The staff especially Julette is amazing. She was our receptionist, our bartender and our waiter. There are only 5 cabins and they are high in the jungle. Unbelievable accommodation in an amazing setting. On a scale of 1-5 I give it a 6.

We recently stayed for 2 nights (had booked for 4 nights but checked out early) and have very mixed feelings on this resort.
As my title says, I'm sure it used to be a really nice resort, and it is clear the owner invested a lot of money initially. The problem is they are not investing enough time and money to keep it up.
The good:
1. Lovely jungle setting
2. Very private bungalows (only 5 on the entire 28 acres)
3. Small but nice poor/bar area (the water is not heated though, so you can't stay in the pool long)
The bad:
1. Only 1 of the 3 showers in our unit had enough water pressure be able to use it
2. The outdoor shower was covered in a black mold-like substance
3. Bedside light didn't work.
4. Second level overhead fan was missing the motor (wires hanging out)
5. Plug was missing cover (child could easily electrocute themselves
6. The roof leaked during rain, and dripped onto third level bedroom
7. 13 bats make their home in the 3rd level
8. Very musty/moldy smelling
9. Food was only so/so in the restaurants.
I truly feel bad giving such a negative review as every employee we meet was very nice, but I don't want anyone to waste their time here.

Thank you for taking the time out to give us a review, Michael. We are very disappointed with ourselves to know that your experience was so poor. These were all things that could have been avoided, and for that, we are extremely sorry. We were in the midst of preparing our treehouses for the upcoming season, and the treehouse originally reserved for you did not finish in time. While we fully understand this is no excuse, please know that we are doing everything we can to ensure none of these issues arise again. We have addressed and fixed every single issue stated above. We wish to express that our guests do not normally experience such poor-quality rooms from us. We will surely learn from this experience and it will only make us better. If there is a chance for us to make this up to you, please give us that chance.

My husband and I traveled to Belize over Thanksgiving in 2015 to celebrate his 50th Birthday. I planned this trip for 8 months did lots of research and thought I had picked the best spot in Cayo, with Amber Sunset. First the owners are lovely people and the food was exceptional. I booked the Garifuna room for 3 nights but we only stayed for 1.
The issues were the thatched roof leaked in the middle of the night, luckily it missed the bed. Since these are open air rooms, all we heard all night long were the large trucks and bus down shifting gears on the hill at the bottom of the resort, not very quiet and peaceful. Due to the amount of rain, there were lots of ants that entered the room in the middle of the night, I guess this was to be expected since this was like camping in luxury? Due to the low water pressure I was not able to wash my hair, the shower only produce a trickle of water, barely enough to wash off the days sweat and grim. So we decided to check out the next morning. Since I had pre-booked 3 nights and put down a deposit, I assumed there would not be much of a charge, but Giovanni had a clever way of calculating the nights stay for the room, with dinner and breakfast it cost us almost $350.00, a little high considering the room costs $175.00.

Our family enjoyed the sounds and sights of the jungle at this hidden resort. From the highway, it's a steep climb up to the bungalows that are tucked into the thick foliage on the hillside. We enjoyed the friendly service and meals on site and explored the surrounding area into San Ignacio from this great little spot.

We very much enjoyed the peace and quiet and serenity of this little jungle hideaway. We loved the swinging bed in our room, hammock and outdoor shower with bug net. It was cool enough we didn't get too hot at night. We dined with the resort several times and had fun with their nightly themed dinners based on different culture of Belize. What really made this place stand out above the rest is the impeccable customer service. The manager and staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed/wanted- even so far as to bring us a yoga mat from home! They arranged our tours and cabs and anything else we needed help with as well. Highly recommend!!!
