Joanne and Mervyn provide a welcoming and friendly service. The motel is in the heart of Whitianga so easy walking to the shops, beach, wharf and ferry to Cooks beach. The units ( 1-6) are dated, so expect a 70s decor experience. There are newer units (7-12) which maybe more modern. They did have ramps for one, so good for wheelchair access.
Our unit was very clean, however each room only has one power point so with todays devices you need to take a power board to charge everything. Wifi was quite reliable while we were there, though only have 5 GB for stay. Rooms are quite small with no wardrobe, though you can hang a few items on the wall and a set of drawers is provided, along with plenty of mirrors.
There is no air conditioning so the units are very hot in the peak of summer, though a fan was provided.
Units serviced each day with clean towels and we were provided with sachets of shampoo, soap, make up wipes which my daughter loved.
I do not drink tea and coffee however they are supplied in each room.
Our little fridge only had an ice box, so a freezer would have been handy for our week stay. A washing machine is provided free, buy powder at reception and coins for dryer if needed.
The pool is quite shallow however nice to cool off in on a hot day.
Location is key to this motel.

My daughter and I called in for a last minute change of location (our other one was another 30min away) and the hosts were quick to help out. Perfectly clean, tidy and suitable room that met all our requirements for the night. Friendly hosts...location perfect as it's across the road from restaurants/pubs/take away and a short walk to the beach/wharf. Thank you for a great short stay.

A big tick to the owner for showing us to our unit on arrival and being helpful with dinner options. We appreciated the way she engaged with us and made us feel welcome.A very tastefully appointed unit that contained everything we needed. We did abide by the shoes off in the unit policy especially in such a sandy environment. King bed was comfortable and being able to leave windows open made the room temperature bearable for sleeping. The supplied fan was too noisy to leave on overnight. Although we didn’t use either the spa or pool it was nice to have them available. This motel was right in town and easy walking distance to restaurants.

Completely over rated. Pics of the pool are not justified as it's freezing cold in summer and situated in the car park. Rooms are neat and well kept but an overhaul of the bathroom is 20 years overdue. The $2 light fittings could also be replaced and a ceiling fan would not be out of place. If this was cheaper it would be fine but I will spend another $20 next time

A great place to stay if you visiting Whitianga. Location is walking distance to shops, restaurants and the beach. The owners, Mervyn and Joanne are very friendly and helpful. Daily beach and pool towels are available and even a spade if you heading to Hot Water Beach.
Thanks for a great stay.

The Mana-Nui Motel people were extremely helpful to us: firstly I left my sunglasses in the room when we checked out, then we lost a mobile phone and they searched high and low for it before we realized it was in our car! They did all of this with a smile and with kindness, the very definition of hospitality. They were also flexible in order to make our stay better in other ways as well. We enjoyed the hot tub and the pool very much, and the location is excellent. Thank you very much.

We stayed one night while on a road trip. Our unit was roomy, very clean and we found our short stay there very relaxing. Merv and Joanne are lovely and were very accommodating. The location of the motel is very central to the shops, restaurants and wharf. We will definitely go back for a longer stay.

We stayed in a studio with a big king bed and a single with a kitchenette. Very adequate for the three of us for our overnight stay. Just need to upgrade the tv with all the Freeview stations :). Internet was fine. Walking distance to shops, cafe and beach.

This place is a retro, motor-in in the Main Street of Whitianga. The operators are helpful and friendly and the place is spotlessly clean. It is old style but has everything you need, good shower, comfortable bed and a kitchen.
The location is great, a couple of minutes walk to the ferry and waterfront and shops and cafes on your door step. Very quiet.
Highly recommended, great value.

My family and I stayed here January 2018. We did not have any serious issues with the place and our only contact with the owners was at check-in and check-out, which was pleasant enough, but we did wish that we had booked elsewhere.

Good: The location is good. The rooms were clean but out-dated. The one owner, Joanne, seemed nice.

Bad: The internet was poor. The rules attached to the room were restrictive and overbearing; I will provide a few examples. In fact, I may say that some of the rules can be slightly racist. The booklet in each room states that foods such as curries are pungent smelling and asks the occupants to use common sense in avoiding cooking such foods so as to not offend the owners and cleaning staff. The cost of the rooms were expensive for what they were (even after accounting for the high season).

Things to Note:

The booklet also states that the owners reserve the right to charge the customers for a variety of vague infractions (like stained sheets, unplugging things in the unit, accidents). While they acknowledge that this may not be acceptable in today's day and age, they state that they stand by their position.

It is important to note that, as owners, they are entitled to impose whatever rules they want on their place, and threaten whatever punishments they want. However, these rules and restrictions should be made public in advance of booking so people can make informed decisions as to whether they want to stay there. I have never run afoul of any such rules, at any place I have stayed, but the way they are written and the threatening way they are enforced seems heavy-handed and doesn't present a hospitable, welcoming feeling or leave me feeling comfortable staying there.

My sister married a Kiwi and she travels to New Zealand with her husband at least once a year. They make a point of stopping in Whitianga and have found much better accommodations that offer the good location and clean rooms but with friendlier hosts and updated rooms.
