I had trouble finding a place and this motel had a room. It was totally acceptable. It’s not luxury but that 70s decor didn’t bother me. Spacious rooms to unpack and a kitchen to store food. Easy walk to some good restaurants nearby. I was out all day so it was just a place to sleep. I didn’t mind this place and would stay again.
It has a great location though being within a short walk to town, Salt, a playground and the beach amongst other good places to eat. The accommodation was cosy but you had to walk through the 2nd bedroom with 2 single beds to get to the bathroom. We wouldn't go back though as 2 of the 3 beds were pretty bad. I don't think I am that fussy but maybe I notice it a bit more these days. Can't remember a worse double bed though unless you were sleeping alone on a diagonal. Wifi was ok (we had to connect to both points as connectivity was flakey) and don't expect Sky for the kids.
Spacious family room in a small motel about 3 minutes walk from the main street in one direction and the same to the wharf in the opposite direction. Only 5 minutes to the start of the main town beach, so several restaurants, cafes and takeaways are very easily accessed by foot, also the interesting and varied small museum. The rooms were very clean; beds comfortable; shower with great pressure and heat, and all the cooking facilities that one might require. The owner of the motel was very welcoming and attentive to our needs; she is also a great baker sharing her superb chocolate cake with us! We would definitely recommend this motel and now that we have found it, hope to stay there again on our next visit to Whitianga.
A pleasant if somewhat dated property. It provided convenient access to the town and harbour areas. The bed was rather small being just a double after we had become used to king sized beds in most motels in New Zealand. Friendly and helpful staff ensured we had all we needed. Each room also had an oven and hob as well as the usual microwave.
The worst accommodation I have ever stayed in. The rooms have not been maintained since the 1960s. It is not clean. Nasty smudgy stain on the quilt cover, don't ask, vomitous! Totally unprofessional owner operator. Despite having booked months in advance and with email confirmation, the owner knew nothing of our booking, at all! We had booked in for three nights and she graciously allowed us to stay one night before telling us we had to leave! WTF!!! This owner had bought the place from the people we booked with but clearly had done NO due diligence, despite alleging she is an accountant. No qualified accountant would be so incompetent. The place is horrendous and a confirmed booking is no guarantee of actual accommodation. I would not send my worst enemy there, it would be too cruel.…
We were traveling by hire car in a busy season and were booking fairly last minute. We needed somewhere with full kitchen facilities that would also have a place to park our car. Motels in NZ have been generally loud and rowdy and/or on a main road. This was a quiet side-street location about a 5min walk from the ferry and right near the main centre of the town. Great for those driving who want to see Cooks beach, Cathedral Cove and The Hot Water Beach. Nice homely little rooms with calm and serene beach-themed decor. Good wifi. Parking is fine. There is a laundry out the back and drier. The rooms were clean, shower and toilet were modern, kitchen reasonably updated, they've got a microwave/kettle/stovetop for you to prep meals. Comfy beds although the curtains don't block out the light that well. Do note: they don't clean at the end of each day only at the end of your stay and they make clear you need to do your own dishes *shock/horror*…
First time stay here. Amazing owners who made us welcomed and went out of their way. Coffee and tea well supplied in rooms along with bathroom shampoos etc. Very clean tidy, nice and quiet and loved the beach themed rooms. Colours were awesome with the decor. Definitely stay again.
Very decent size studio with a separate bedroom and 2 additional beds in the 'lounge' area. Fully equipped kitchen and good size bathroom. Super clean, overall very comfortable. Easy and fast check-in with a very kind host... Walking distance to plenty of restaurants by the sea or in the city center. Highly recommended!
I stayed here for 3 nights in high season. I got a great price in comparison to other motels in Whitianga. I would have stayed for longer but sadly they were fully booked. The Sea Gypsy is a really lovely quirky little motel. It is small and really nicely decorated with a beach theme. Lovely artwork on the walls as you arrive and a prime location just off the main shore road. It is well equipped with all you need in the kitchen and decent water pressure in the shower. Internet is never great in Whitianga and other coastal places and is slower in high season. However the library has computers , it's just round the corner and will let you have up to 2 hours of free internet. You are a few minutes walk to the beach and all the cafes and restaurants but it still manages to be quiet and private. The owners Graham and Monique are just great and go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay. This is a fun place to stay and really what you want from a Whitianga holiday. If you want bland beige and concrete then don't stay here, this is New Zealand at the beach and the Sea Gypsy is a happy place run by happy people. I loved this motel , it was perfect and I will definitely be back.…
Nice people the owners, fairly new on the scene. Older unit we had, but clean and tidy. Could do with some up grading as the new owners get to it. You get what u pay for, no more, no less. So very handy to wharf area, plus town area, restaurants and so forth. We would stay again.
