What a delight it was to visit Whitianga and gaze over the sparkling waters of the Bay from the very top of the highest hill. Everything was perfect, from the spacious and authentic two bedroom apartment complete with all the extra little luxuries, to our gracious and accommodating hosts who even shared a home cooked meal with us one evening! We would certainly return to The Villa just to soak up the atmosphere or relax again in the spa with its lush green surroundings, overlooking the moonlit water. Superb.

Fantastic stay with beautiful views. The hosts are very hospitable and friendly. We were welcomed with a very extensive luxury breakfast package. There is a whirlpool sea view. Truly the best location we had in New Zealand!

Lodges in New Zealand come in many forms.

The property is perched atop a hill, high above the town of Whitianga with wonderful views across the bay which produces a warm glow from the sunrise in the morning .

The Villa Toscana is a custom built villa incorporating a self contained 100 sq metre private apartment with two bedrooms, a well appointed bathroom and a charming area which includes a Kitchen segment a pretty central dining room table and an area that focuses on a television and hi fi system.

Most importantly you have privacy on all sides of the two fronted building which provides access to a Hot Top with stunning views down to the coast.

For International travellers the property will survive your needs for as long as a week so you can rest up on the final leg before Auckland or begin your holiday here.

In the meantime you can visit the almost deserted beaches of Otama, Matarangi, walk on various tracks and tick box the ubiqutious Cathedral Cove.

I cooked supper on two evenings and Margarita always found an extra spice or piece of equipment needed with out wasteful journeys to Whitianga for long terms answers to short term needs.

Toscana may give you the clue but the floors are all terracotta tiles white washed walls and quality dark furniture but this is not little Italy, it is an international destination infused with Gorgio's and Margarita, your hosts, natural bent for friendship and hospitality .

It rains breakfast provisions when you first arrive and the fruit bowl is top upped regularly with a change of sheets and towels mid stay.

Gorgio will give your partner a round at the local golf course whilst you read walk and dream and end up for a late lunch at Luke's Kitchen for amazing Pizza and a glass of Savvy.

Oh and if you want dinner out in the evening try Motu. It sounds patronising but I really do not expect such exquisite and inventive cooking in a small town on the Coromandel.

So if you want to get off the dash round N Z tour here is a place to stop and breath a little.

Please beware of this place. I cannot believe these other reviews. We are used to staying in 5-star boutique accommodation around the world and have often paid this much for a nights' lodging but this place is outrageously expensive for what you get. This was to be the highlight of our stay in New Zealand and going on the pictures we were pretty excited. We were let down and very upset. The actual accommodation is a tiny apartment below the palatial spread you can see in the pictures. While nicely turned out it was nothing special - Italian linen is not worth these prices. While watching television might not be your first choice of activities, if you choose to do so you will be viewing the pictures on something smaller in size to a standard laptop computer! - surely these prices warrant a flat-screen LCD/plasma at least. The stunning views, which must be there, are only fully available to your hosts who perch above you - you can hear them move about in their mansion. I cannot speculate how this place has garnered such positive reviews. We would not have been comfortable paying one third this price for this overrated B&B. We stayed in some wonderful places in and around Coromandel peninsula but this was the worst value accommodation we have ever had the misfortune of paying for. Anywhere.

Response from giorgioallemano, Owner at Villa Toscana

We are always thankful whenever we receive constructive suggestions on how to improve the quality of our product. Villa Toscana’s 5 star Qualmark rating is an independent rating by New Zealand’s official rating system that we are very proud to have maintained for 9 years now. We have two main objectives: the first is to guarantee the absolute privacy of our Guests and the second is to provide a unique Tuscan style experience. Most of the Guests we have enjoyed during all these years have been very happy here and, with quite a few of them, we still correspond regularly. This review from PlungerJ has actually been the first negative feed back we have ever had. Interestingly enough and inexplicably, during April 2010 we didn't host any guests from Australia and the name Plunger doesn't exist in our Guests database.

What a special place to stay!! We chose to have our wedding at Villa Toscana, because of the absolute beauty and tranquility Villa Toscana offers. Margherita and Giorgio are wonderful hosts that welcome you into their warm family home without being intrusive. Food, wine and olive oil are amazing as are the views and attention to detail that made our stay unforgettable. Thank you so much for making our wedding so beautiful. You continue to be very dear friends to us.

Every now and again your bound to come across something special in your travels, Villa Toscana is definitely special, from the luxurious accommodation to the spectacular views of Mercury Bay and many islands. From the distinctly Italian ambience to the warm and friendly hospitality. This grand Tuscan villa is impressive. Giorgio a marine biologist in a previous life, his charming wife Margherita who is passionate about art and their children will make you feel comfortable and at home from the moment you arrive to the time you reluctantly wave them goodbye.
The accommodation has sea views, its own private entrance, garden, parking, spa, terrace,BBQ and even a private helipad. It's lavishly decorated with antiques and contains two very comfortable bedrooms. A granite kitchen and open plan lounge and dining.
Giorgio is also a keen golfer and we had a round at the Dunes, Matarangi on a glorious sunny afternoon, I thouroughly enjoyed our game and Giorgio's company.
All in all we had a wonderful time and we look forward to returning one day.

We stayed here during the scallop festival. We have not stayed often at private lodging but we so pleasantly surprised by the privacy and and space in this gorgeous setting. The hosts are fantastic and enthusiastic, helpful to get out bags to the room and then we were left alone in peace to enjoy our weekend on the terrace and the fantastic private spa pool. The Villa has clearly been designed and decorated with passion. All with the most amazing views on the Coromandel. Highly recommended. We were supplied with a very enjoyable bottle of wine and the fridge was stocked with delicacies for the weekend also.

Well, again researching TripAdvisor saw us depart to the perfect location for a 3 x day break in one of New-Zealand premier beach locations. Our hosts Margherita and Giorgio, the quintessential warm, generous Italian couple who from day 1 made us feel part of their family who we also privileged to meet. The apartment which is on ground floor was like stepping into a Tuscany villa, warm, well furnished and appointed with every conceiveable accoutrement available including a selection of Giorgio's fine wine and perfume for the discerning woman (in this case my partner). The view from the patio is stunning and the surrounding native bush provides for privacy and tranquility. We were well advised to dine at Motu in Whitianga, one on Northlands top restaurants. (see review). The only disappointment was not being able to enjoy our hosts fine Italian cooking, although Giorgio did provide a generous sampler to tempt us should we return again (which we will). A little piece of Italy in Whitianga? you bet.
Ciao bella..

We celebrated our wedding anniversary at Villa Toscana. Giorgio and Margherita were delightful hosts. We visited a gorgeous beach, fantastic pizza pad and quaint tea-house, all recommended by Giorgio and perfect for our escape from Auckland. We had a memorable weekend and enjoyed the spectacular view.

Very warm and friendly hospitality, unobtrusive but always accessible. The many little extras were a pleasant surprise and the hosts Giorgio and Marguerite have actually thought of everything.
They have created a truly authentic experience and nothing has been compromised.
The fabulous views whilst being in such close proximity to the township were an added bonus.
