We recently stayed here for two nights in a two bedroom apartment. We were greeted warmly by Kylie on arrival, our check in was prompt and she was a great source of local knowledge, including directions to the best fish and chip shop in Whitianga. The apartment was well designed with a well stocked kitchenette and large living area. The balcony gave us a great view of the water. The facility is located within walking distance to the marina, restaurants, shops and the town centre. As a previous review stated the bedrooms were a little hot at night, but there was a portable fan in each of those rooms, which was adequate to circulate the air. Plenty of parking was available during our stay.

Room Tip: Best view would be from a water front apartment- it is worth paying a little extra for this.

If you are looking for a fully functioning apartment that has everything you need and is in a great location, then this is a great place to stay.
It’s spacious, immaculately furnished and fitted out. The kitchen area has everything you need and more, the bathroom is snug but modern, clean and functional.
Kylie gave us a really warm welcome and made some great suggestions regarding places to visit.
The apartment is 2 minutes walk from the ocean, 5 minutes walk from the town centre and just around the corner from a great fish and chip shop.
We were very happy we stayed here.

Very high quality apartment with lateral sea view. Everything we wanted was provided and easily found. The apartment is not serviced and there is no starter kit or daily service . We like it that way. There is a Four Square just down the road and New World and Countdown not much further away. There is a good home laundry unit and if you want fresh towels every day you can launder them yourselves.
Digital TV, Netflix, Youtube etc provided. Car parking provided on site and for the larger apartments space fo two cars.
We had a very enjoyable stay and the sea view enabled us to see the ferry and the returning boats from the fishing competition
Excellent restaurants within easy walkng distance.

Stayed for a couple of nights and booked in for one more as it was such a comfortable stay. We were ready to move in. Friendly reception at check in. It is a self service apartment so clean up on your own, nice vacuum if needed. There is a heat pump and oil heater for the bedroom that kept the apartment nice and warm for our winter stay. There is dish washing soap but only two small packages (enough for a load) of dish washer detergent but can buy more at office same for laundry. There were a few minor maintenance issues but nothing that distracted from the pleasure of a home away from home feel of the Crow’s Nest. Huge closest to put away your stuff and bags.

Also I had looked at other reviews and was glad I chose Crows Nest, just had a newer feel.

I was a bit concerned about reviews on the large double bed but it was quite comfy for us bed snobs. I am used to a queen but the large double bed made for some good night sleeps. The shower was hot and powerful with nice towels. We had a nice balcony with a water view.

We look forward to our next stay.

We hadn’t been to Whitianga for a few years so checked in here for a couple of days recently mid week. Part of a post lockdown road trip. All very quiet, not many other guests. The one bedroom apartment (actually a two bedroom unit with another locked off room) was generally clean and tidy, some minor lapses. Our test is always the toaster crumb tray. It failed.
Undercover car park is good. Very close to the town shops, cafes and beach and not a bad walk to large supermarkets. The TV could do with an update. The outdoor balcony furniture was pretty dirty, so don’t hang out any clothes to dry. The in-room laundry was handy.

Inundation of Coromandel Peninsula from Wed 4th Jan to the 8th Jan was 400mm. Cyclone Hale was looming for Tuesday, 10th Jan and advice from NZ metservice on the 9th Jan was ‘to avoid travel at all costs’.
Crows Nest Mgt insisted that we could arrive still on the 9th (our booking date) despite dangerous weather forecast for the following 48hrs and Authorities recommending people not to travel to the coast.
Crows Nest Mgt charged us a full weeks accommodation and treated us as ‘ no shows’ despite authorities requests for people not to travel to the Coromandel, specifically Whitianga.

They insisted we could travel because the roads were still open! Who travels with their family into the eye of a storm ?

Tuesday morning 400houses were without power. Heavy rain continued, roads were shut, flood waters were still rising.

Despite the warnings mgt were not budging from their policy …..

Crows Nest Management put business ahead of peoples safety and they ignore all warnings signs from authorities. and weather experts. They actually said they didn’t believe the forecasts, ‘they always get it wrong’. Not helpful to international travellers.

Think twice before booking Crows Nest Apartments. Mgt are unreasonable and inflexible.

Response from Mark and Kylie Phillips, General Manager at Crows Nest Apartments
Responded 24 Jan 2023
Hi there, for anyone reading the above completely unfair review, here are some extra facts. Louise had a 5 night booking with us from 9th Jan, arriving the day before the ex-cyclone was due to impact Whitianga. On the 9th Jan, her arrival date, there were 7 other families who arrived safely without any difficulty to stay with us. Louise called us and asked our advice about travelling here and we reassured her that the roads were open and she would be fine. Instead of using our 35 years of local knowledge, she has gone with the advice from a weather forecasting website. This storm didn't just come out of nowhere - it had been forecast for over a week. Had Louise called us before the 3 day cancellation period ran out then we would have happily cancelled her booking with no charge. Louise's main reason for not wanting to come she said, was to keep her family safe. It was her decision not to come for this reason so the cost of the booking (NZ$1900) was the price that she was willing to pay to do this. In my eyes I would be happy to pay far more than that to keep my family safe if I thought they were in danger. She also mentioned that she didn't want to be cooped up inside for 5 days with her family. Problem was, that would be have been the case no matter where she was in the North Island as the storm effected most of it. True to form, the weather was forecast to hit late on 10th but arrived early on the 10th instead. The 11th was the worst of it and was gone by the following morning. At no stage did we have any power outages here in Whitianga. Yes, we had roads closed at times with tidal flooding (flooding caused by high tides) but we had guests leave and arrive every day of her booking. We have been through many forecasted 'one in 20 year storm'. Often, they are just a storm in a tea cup. The effects of this storm were not too dissimilar from what we experience at least 2-3 times each winter. So we've done it before. (don't let this put you off coming in winter :-)) We are going to the Elton John concert this weekend and the weather looks miserable! At no point did we think that we could call Sir Elton and ask him for a refund or could we just make it another night. We understand having a holiday with beautiful weather makes it much more enjoyable but unfortunately we cannot control this. We would if we could :-) It's just the luck of the draw. Our advice is to just make the most of it as it's not very fair if you just cancel because the weather is looking no good. That is a room that you blocked someone else from booking - someone who doesn't let the rain dictate how they have fun. Louise was one of 3 disgruntled people that we had to deal with through this period, which has certainly changed us as people, we are thicker skinned and harder nosed for this! Maybe Louise and others just haven't thought about anyone else other than themselves in this situation. She might have been protecting her family, but the tiny slither of the rental that we actually get to keep from the bookings is how we feed ours!!!

This place is amazing, we booked in for the weekend as my husband and son were diving, I asked for a late check out, which we couldn't have as the room was booked. Friday night before our arrival I got a phone call, for a very small fee we got upgraded to the 3 bedroom apartment with 5pm check out. The apartment was so clean and massive, walking distance to everything. We have stayed here before and we would recommend this place to anyone, we will be back again. Thanks so much for making a great weekend fabulous.

Lovely clean self service apartment that met all of our needs as a couple travelling with our elderly mum, even down to an elevator to bring us up to our apartment with fantastic views of the Harbour. We would most definitely stay here again.
Crows Nest apartments had a feeling of beach holiday, with coastal feel interior design that made you feel like you had stepped into your beach house. Lovely art on the wall too!
We traveled in Spring, and had all the machines to wash and dry our clothes or swimming things right in our apartment. With a few sachets of wash powder.
The apartments were close to beach, town, restaurants. Not much more I can say really!! 😊🏖️

A lovely apartment, well laid out with quality fittings. The kitchen was excellent with a large range of equipment and having a washing machine and dryer made life so much easier than finding a laundromat. Great views and good outdoor furniture to sit and enjoy the sunsets.

We shared a two bedroom two bathroom apartment with two teenagers and couldn't recommend it highly enough.
Apartment was very comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. Kitchen and laundry had everything needed. Bedrooms had comfortable beds and plenty of closet space. Air conditioning in the living room and fans provided to direct the cool air into the bedrooms. Loved "the Crows Nest" roof terrace for an early evening drink/relaxation spot.
Great location - very close to beach, ferry, shops and restaurants. And friendly and helpful hosts!
Recommend booking a sea view room in summer as not only do you get a sea view, but also sun on your terrace in the morning which is lovely for breakfast, and cooler for bed time as no sun in the main bedroom.
