Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We chose to stay here because they welcome pets and not only were they welcoming to our dog but also the room (like a small flat, really) was immaculately clean and well presented and had an amazing view, straight over the (quiet) road from the beach. Host was super friendly and helpful, suggesting child- and dog-friendly places to eat. Great location close to town and perfect for our needs.

We arrived with our small dog during cold wet weather after a journey over winding roads. Kay was so warm and welcoming, she had already put the heaters on in the unit for us and our Unit (8) was so clean, cosy warm and smelled beautiful. Just bliss. The bed was amazingly comfortable, we had everything we needed. The facilities although of their mid century build age were spotlessly clean and cared for. The view in the morning from our unit was of the sunrise across Buffalo Beach to Wharekaho it was spectacular, framed with palm trees and the sound of the sea. A moments walk to restaurants, cafes, the Lost Springs, the ferry ride across the harbour, We could not have wished for more. And best of all it is like staying in an archetypal kiwi bach (that you wish your parents had bought for your childhood!), (yes you will have to live without the dishwasher but who cares) but with the wonderful attentive friendly service to make it perfect. Doubly perfect as our small dog was made just as welcome. Kay and her parents are the kind of hosts who make you feel like you are coming home to a favourite relatives house. We stayed for the whole week. Definitely going back again and I've already highly recommended it to friends and work colleagues.

We stayed here for 6 nights. There were 3 adults and a dog so we had the family unit that looks out on to the road. It has fanstatic views of the bay and you can see all the boats going out and coming back in. You can also see all the people walking along the promenade.

The unit itself is very comfortable with 2 bedrooms. There is a full kitchen and a dining room table so you can cook if you want to. There is also a lounge area with a TV that has Freeview. There was also a single bed in the lounge.

The motel is about 100m away from a really good fish and chip shop, but also close to the main shops in Whitianga. Once we got there the only time we used to car was to go to Countdown. Usually we just walked round to the shops and went to our favourite café and had coffee and cake.

Being right across the road from the beach was excellent as we enjoy swimming. You could just put your togs on and pop across the road. Then you could sit in front of the unit to dry out and enjoy the sun.

The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. We have been to this motel before and it is clear that the new owners have been making some improvements.

Do you want to be called “gross” and told “I am also happy you will not be staying with us” by the manager? Do you want to be told there’s a room available at a price way more than the website shows, only to be lied to that it’s no longer available right when you’re about to reserve it? Then this is your place!

Typical bait and switch scam I’ve seen many times where the website will not let you book the room and it shows a certain price…only to contact the hotel and it’s way more expensive claiming some scammy, scummy reason that they made up to charge you more.

I wanted a sea view room and checked all of the booking agencies. NONE of the agencies listed a sea view room, so I decided to contact the hotel to make sure the agencies were correct. I talked with Kay (The Manager) said they actually had one. Asked a few questions, made sure I could check in late at 9pm and was ready to pay when Kay says “Unfortunately our front one bedroom sea view unit has now sold out for your dates” supposedly by way of booking agency online.

The customer that snagged the room must have had some magic wizard booking agency, or I was lied to...because I spent a good couple of hours checking all the top agencies, as well as some of the ones that I do not trust that much to make absolutely sure they did not have one before I contacted them. New Zealand is notoriously known for not answering phones or email, so that was the hesitation to email them.

It might be a blessing because many of the reviews say the hotel is old, run down, disgusting and bugs everywhere. You also see their employees or owners responding to reviews calling people keyboard warriors and insulting them, which is absolutely embarrassing, appalling and unacceptable! Also lots of reviews saying the employees/owners are racist, which sounds about right because once they found out I was American I was definitely treated differently. I will be alerting the New Zealand government of their practices and racist tendencies so they can look in to this company and get them shut down.

Arrived to an extremely friendly and happy welcome. Rooms are comfortable and very clean. Decore is neurtal and pleasant. Newly painted and nicely presented. You can park the car and walk everywhere. Restaurants and bars within 5 min walk, beach is across the road. Would highly recommend for the price and owners have a wealth of local knowledge.

We managed to get the end room room looking out to the ocean with parking right outside the front door. Across the road was the waterfront with easy walking path and not far from some great restaurants and the city centre. Friendly & helpful management.

Stayed 3 nights in Sep 2013 and what a relaxing break we had. Ron & Rhonda were delightful Hosts - full of information and nothing was too much trouble for them. While this property was an older style Motel (as many are in NZ), everything had been done to present our Unit in the best possible light. It was very clean, the bed was comfortable and there was a 2 Seater leather Lounge to relax in. Location must be the best in Whitianga ! Right across from the main beach and walking distance to town, the Ferry and Museum. If you want somewhere comfortable and perfectly positioned - this is the place. Thanks for a great stay !

First impressions count - sparkling paintwork and immaculate approach to the reception area where you’re welcomed by the super-friendly Kay who, along with her family, are the new owners of this motel. Units have been totally renovated to a high standard - EVERYTHING - from pillows to forks - is new. 2 minutes walk to a selection of supermarkets, retail, restaurants, takeaways and fine dining. This motel is a real find with amazing views over the marina.
