Steeped in culture and history, Zanzibar enticed travellers from far and wide. Once known as the spice island, today the Zanzibar Archipelago is still bathed in the heady scents of spices and traditional dhows still drift across the horizon. &Beyond Mnemba Island is an idyllic tropical gem located off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar. With only 12 luxuriously rustic palm-frond bandas peeking out onto white coral sand beach from the dappled shade of the casuarina pine forest (plus one family banda), this tiny island offers an exclusive retreat. Inhabited solely by &Beyond guests and the dedicated staff caring for them, the island spans just 1.5 km, making for an intimate experience. Renowned for its coral atoll and tranquil azure seas, the island is celebrated for its conservation efforts. Discover the island’s coral nursery and artificial coral reef, protected green turtle nesting sites and the two endangered antelope species that call the island home.

I first discovered Zanzibar in 1989. Back then Bwejuu and Jambiani beaches had no hotels. Little electricity. Just white sand and lobsters for 50c. Utter beauty. Sadly much has now been built there and elsewhere. However one haven remains completely intact, probably some of the finest white powder sand beach in the world. And I’ve seen many from Asia, Seychelles, Central America and Bahamas.
Mnemba is extraordinary in so many ways. It is a small atoll you can walk round in 25 mins max, white sand surrounds. The hotel is Robinso Crusoe luxury, you are barefoot all your stay, have a dedicated member of staff who ensures your every need is catered for. We had Christopher, he was the most lovely employee and so gentle and attentive.
The island sleeps a max of 24 in 12 open Bandas. They are all very comfortable, spacious, the service 5star +. For the 24 guests there are 64 staff.
The food is varied and to a very high standard. While there is a suggested menu each day you can order whatever you want on reason. Head chef Jen, Hotel head Kenny, Sade his No2. Marina COO.
The diving is great. Rob Pugh the diving instructor a lovely bear of a Brit who my teenagers loved and did their Advanced PADI qualification with.
There is a large focus on sustainability and marine conservation by And Beyond who own Mnemba
So whether it’s a honeymoon or the family trip of a lifetime, you need to experience the beauty of Mnema.

We stayed here for four nights after hitting five national parks and four lodges over 10 days or so. Who knew going on safari would be so hectic? Mnemba Island was the perfect place to decompress before heading home. The rooms are large and comfortable. I was a little worried that it would be hot in the evening and difficult to sleep in the open air. Instead, the temperature was perfect. Food is delicious, with lots of healthy options. Chef Jenn spoke to us at every meal to make sure it was good and get suggestions for the next meal. She created options for our picky teen She seemed to revel in the challenge of making people happy with food. Some reviews say the snorkeling off the beach is not very good. There are places that ARE good if you know where to look, but the best snorkeling is on the back side of the island. They are happy to take you out in the boat anytime you wish. You are likely to find dolphins, and they will stop the boat to let you jump in and swim with them. I had a pod of at least 50 swim just under me -- amazing! When we got back from snorkeling, Divemaster Chris asked if I'd like to scuba dive the next day. I've always been apprehensive about learning to dive, but he put me at ease. Sure enough, the next morning he took me through the resort course and shallow water practice, and then we went out to a wall reef for the real thing. Easily one of the best experiences of my life. Chris was an outstanding teacher, and he was right beside me the whole time. I never felt unsafe. On the ride back to the island, I mentioned that I wished I had brought my camera to get pictures of the island from the water. No problem. Chris offered to take me out that afternoon. I also got good pictures from the dhow cruise the lodge offered. The beach was soft. The water was clear and had every shade of blue you can imagine. It's also very well managed. Everything was perfect. Some reviews mention that issue with people coming over on the boats to snorkel. We didn't find issues with that. They were there for part of the day, but they weren't all that close and they didn't both us/mar our stay at all. The lodge does a great job making sure these "foreign" boats honor the property limits.

An exceptional six night stay at &Beyond Mnemba Island in March 2021, congratulations to the entire team! Phenomenal from start to finish in every category of hospitality, especially the magically authentic rooms and common areas in the shaded beach areas and gorgeous forest. A culinary feast, the food was outstanding with an abundance of options and variety, congrats to Jen and her team. The front of house team led by Ash & Kenny, very hospitable. Many thanks to our extremely capable and friendly Tumaini who catered for our every need during our stay. The sea was a feast of sea-life including swimming with both the dolphins and the newly hatched green turtles, bucket list stuff, thanks to Chris and his team. Yes the odd crab shares your over-sized, extraordinarily comfortable and tastefully decorated bandas, what a privilege to share with them and welcome to Africa! Yes there are daily snorkelling boats a few hundred metres away on the local ‘house’ reef, in my view an absolute non-issue, neither an eyesore nor a noise factor. Mnemba island is a completely private treasure but the nearby reef is a public (Tanzanian) asset, let the locals enjoy it a few hours a day and give them a livelihood ferrying paying guests from mainland Zanzibar. For more than eighteen hours a day the reef is there for your exclusive and private use. We celebrated a milestone wedding anniversary on the island and the &Beyond team could not have done more for us – a truly exceptional and memorable week, well done! P&L

First of all, I want to state that the staff were very kind and accommodating in every respect. I'm writing this review to help future guests manage their expectations, as I rely heavily on other reviews prior to traveling. The photos look great, but in reality, its a very grimy and unpleasant place to stay. There were bugs of every type in our bathroom, bedroom, everywhere. The idea of a banda is romantic, but not practical. No one goes on vacation to deal with mini crabs coming into their room, or to deal with a filthy bathroom, and bugs everywhere on their dinner table and INSIDE their food and drinks. We experienced all this and opted to leave the island sooner than planned. We had an unexpected peek into the island kitchen, and it was unhygienic. With some serious attention to hygiene, and a change-up in the toilet set-up and closed bathrooms, this place could be improved to a 3 star experience. I don't know who is managing this place, but they really need to be replaced. It was grimy, and miserable. The only place in Africa we contracted Diarreah. Most definitely, from the unhygienic food prep.
Also, to the earlier poster who talked about the boats all around the island. They were so right! Nothing like looking at 100 rickety wood boats surrounding your supposed paradise island.

Mnemba island is dirty, and the airport is 4th world. Just select somewhere else.

Response from andBeyondTravel, Regional Director – East Africa at Andbeyond Mnemba Island
Responded 8 Jan 2020
Dear Jacqueline, We thank you for your review and welcome this opportunity to address the matters you have raised. Before continuing we would like to say how sorry we are that andBeyond Mnemba Island did not meet your expectations. You make an important point regarding the matter of product ‘expectations’. The lodge is not your classic brick-and-mortar structure – the rustic luxury of the unpretentious thatched bandas, with unglazed windows and natural finishes, are both a celebration of the surrounding natural beauty and low in impact. This is a true close-to-nature island experience. That said, there are crabs to be found and of course with the unseasonal rain and recent tropical storm that hit the Island this did make matters a little more challenging in terms of the number of insects that find their way in. With reference to your comments on the kitchen environment, this does comes as a surprise, as we are unaware of the detail and none of our team on the ground were aware of what was seen to be unhygienic. Having said that, we have stringent hygiene and safety protocols in place in our kitchens and take these extremely seriously so be assured this matter has been addressed. We are also happy to mention that we have plans in place this year to rebuild our kitchen from the bottom up. Regarding your comments on the boat traffic, we have recently had all our Senior Management from andBeyond, including our CEO on the Island to address this issue and we are in live discussions with senior government officials. Our ongoing success in protecting and preserving this piece of island paradise is assisted by all our guests input, and we thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your kind words on our Mnemba Team. Should you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly - jane.braack@andBeyond.com Yours sincerely, Jane Braack Regional Director – East Africa

andBeyond Mnemba Island is by the far the nicest resort we have ever visited. The private island is located off the coast of Zanzibar. Access to the island is provided by a private boat. There is no wharf, so be prepared to get your feet wet. The island includes only 12 bandas (thatched houses), so it is very private. Each banda includes a living room, bedroom, closet area and a bathroom. The bandas are very large and very comfortable. In addition, there a private covered lounge by the beach and a private sunshade. The Circumference of the island is about 1.5 kilometres. You can easily walk around the island along the beach at low tide. There is so much white sand it is unbelievable! The common area includes a lounge and indoor-outdoor dining. In addition, there is a spa, gift shop and water sport facility. Sun downers on the beach every night and a sun downer on a sailboat. We have traveled extensively to the Caribbean. We have never experienced anything like Mnemba Island. The food was the best we have ever had. The service was extraordinary. Mnemba Island is paradise!

This has been by far the best days of our life.
The staff is amazing, our butler Rajab, Lisa from wellness, Jenn the chef, Kenny the manager and the diving staff and just everyone.
Before coming we were nervous about the lack of proper doors and windows and a/c but in all honesty you dont even notice once you are here (sometimes at night it even gets cold). You fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake up to the sounds of birds, there are little deer around the island and you can hear from your room.
They have amazing security so you feel safe the entire time and yes there are foreign boats who come to the reef but hey... the sea is for everyone right? And the lodge has a security boat yo make sure nobody gets to the island.
The sand banks in the low tide are one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life, the water is clear clear clear and you can see many different types of fish just by snorkeling right off the beach of your room.
The food is just incredible at every meal and they are super accomodating... they even prepared quesadillas for my husband who had a crave one day!

If you are hesitating to book just book and come! Dont think about it that much! I can say without a doubt that this has been the most beautiful place we have ever stayed at. It is worth every last cent we spent and we will definitely come back!

We stayed here for a special Birthday with some friends and occupied 3 rooms. Every thing from the welcome to making our stay memorable, our experience was just amazing. The rooms are spacious, and open, each area is private with its own out door area near the beach as well. You can be as private here as you want ,and they will do whatever they can to please you. The food was absolutely delicious !The service of our Butler , the dive center and the entire team was exceptional. were The management went out of their way to help us with flight bookings and covid requirements. Enough cannot be said.Yes the boats around the island can be a little irritating, but , this the the Mnemba Atoll that Zanzibar island is famous for and within a few hours they are all gone ,and paradise is all yours again.
Yes its expensive ... but its a true & Beyond experience.visit their other properties and you will find the same standard.

MNemba Island is casual luxury at its finest. You take off your shoes when you arrive on the island and you never put them back on until you reach the mainland after your stay. The staff makes sure your every need is met and encourages you to just relax and unwind.

Special thanks to our butlers Faki and Christopher for setting up lovely meals for us and always making sure we had every thing we could want, to Chef Kelly for the extraordinary cuisine (including sushi every day and great GF options), to Rob for 8 (!!) terrific dives, and to the entire staff for a lovely stay. It was the perfect end to our travel in Africa.

Where to start? The island is gorgeous. The reef off the front of the beach is excellent. Plenty of fish and pretty coral. Food is exceptional and very accommodating. We had a group of 7 - with some being rather fussy - and the kitchen handled anything they threw at them brilliantly.

The rooms are beautiful and well spaced along the island. There is a wind that hits the back of the island particularly in the evening (end of June we went) but the front is very well protected even at it’s blowiest.

The staff were all lovely. Distant when you wanted your privacy but attentive when needed. Rajab and Christopher were our stars. Always smiling and genuinely happy to help.

The place is very expensive but it’s truly a unique experience - it’s not every day you find luxury service on remote tropical islands

The accommodations at Mnemba are individual bandas which are private, extremely spacious and so beautifully decorated. Each Banda has private beach lounges and a charming outdoor covered structure with sofas, fridge, table, etc. There are snorkeling reefs steps from each banda. The service here is over the top…without asking, a private dining table was set up on the beach for us surrounded by torches and candles. Sushi was delivered late afternoon for a snack. The food is fresh, healthy and delicious. A special place. Worth it!!!!!

We went in September and there were tons of non-indigenous birds making a lot of noise: You should also check for the jelly fish schedule. My wife couldn't swim cause there were too many Jelly fish stinging.
