The hotel and family owners are charming. The rooms are tastefully decorated and well equipped. Every room has a wonderful view down to the sea. Excellent value for money as the hotel is only 2star. The food was delicious- we were on half-board terms and enjoyed a good 3-course meal every evening on the beautiful tree-shaded terrace.
A terrible forest fire devasted the nearby area last year but luckily the hotel, its views and the immediate village were spared.
Disadvantages (or maybe advantages to some!). They don't speak any English so a smattering of French is very useful. The drive down to Bastia or the coast is winding and a you need strong nerves (but beautiful views if you like heights ). All in all, highly recommended.
So far so good. The staff are top-notch as well. Like most people we met in Corsica, they are extremely friendly and helpful, but very professional too. We found they made a great effort to speak English (moreso than I've found in other parts of France) so really I could not wish for anything better in this respect.
There is a nice swimming pool, however in early June we found it a little on the chilly side, presumably it's not heated.
Our room was pretty good. It was plain in terms of decor, but a sensible size (one double bed and a single for our daughter), and we could not cease to be impressed by the views across the hills, church towers and rooftops, and the sea towards Elba.
The restaurant is amazing. We just loved the interesting food, nicely presented, and excellent local wines. However we did find it expensive, getting towards 2x UK prices, even for wine (yep you read that right... in France!).
The main down-side is that this is "out in the sticks". The roads are well-surfaced but continuously bendy, so to get from here to Bastia, San Florent or other places it is at least a half or one hour's drive. A car is essential. There are not so many other places nearby to walk or drive to, but the nearest nice little place to drive to on the sea is Erbalunga, which you must visit for a coffee or a meal and a stroll.
We stayed a week at La Corniche, and after that time we felt it was long enough, and in retrospect wished we had stayed for a shorter time but moved around the island.
I would not hesitate to recommend La Corniche - both as a hotel or restaurant - but you should try to understand where it is and make sure it will suit the kind of holiday you are expecting.
As well as the comfortable but basic en suite rooms, excellent food and pleasant service there is a small swimming pool and garden with some shady corners.
Breakfast and dinner are served on the elevated terrace with unbeatable views of the sea with the island of Elba in the distance . The view plus the steady traffic of ferries and yachts heading for more distant ports of Nice and Livorno makes for therapeutic gazing.
We stayed on a half board basis and the food was excellent. However you were treated rather like second class citizens for not being a la carte. The Maitre d never spoke to us once !
It may be a family run hotel but there was very little charm from them. I am fluent in French so that cannot have been the reason.
A great shame as this could be an excellent hotel.
Rooms: Extremely clean, comfortable pillows and linens, good size with great views of the mountains. Modern updated bathrooms and strong air conditioning.
Hotel Grounds: There’s a large pool atop a mountain. Large indoor sitting room with comfortable seating in a cute French style. There’s also a nice outdoor seating area next to the pool with a bar and plenty of shade.
Restaurant: The breakfast buffet was a cold buffet, but great selection of pastries and cakes, yogurts, breads, eggs, charcuterie and cheeses. The dinner at the hotel was amazing, and great service. I previously stayed at a 5 star hotel on the coast, and the dinner at la corniche was much better. You can’t get more calming views to watch the sunset over the mountains.
Staff: The staff was every friendly, and though they didn’t speak fluent English, were able to accommodate my needs and were pleasant.
Location: The hotel sits in a quiet village in the mountains. There is a small town with 2 restaurants within a 10 minute walk. It’s a 3 mile walk down to the beach, so a car is definitely needed.
The hotel is very close to Bastia but a world away. It’s incredibly peaceful. Our room was practically an apartment complete with living room, air conditioning and a huge bathroom.
The restaurant is specular. The beignets de fromage frais are particularly special as was everything we had. The breakfast too was delightful. I’m vegetarian and they always went out of their way.
The service is second to none both here and at the Anziani family’s restaurant in the town about 100 yards away.
It was a pleasure to stay here and to meet such a refreshingly kind and devoted family who understood exactly what great, discrete and professional service means.
Finally - Corsica itself - is incredibly special. Nothing like mainland France. A real treat with crystal clear waters.
We chose this hotel for a quiet, peaceful, get away from it all holiday and we weren't disappointed. We've returned on two further occasions since 2002.
"The entire property is quiet as it's located in a mountain village. Request a room with a view facing the coast."Read full review
