This is a long overdue review. My husband and I traveled to South Africa September 2021 for the first time and we fell in love with this beautiful country. Never been to a safari and did not know much to expect. Mhondoro has blown us away. Everything from the impeccably maintained grounds to the wildlife sighting to the delicious and non-stop meals and the friendly staff as well as our guide Tegan. We just can't say enough good things about the time we spent here at Mhondoro. Never had I imagined that I would fall in love with a lodge so much that I am planning to go back even before our trip was over.
Ground: absolutely stunning with artistic touches all over. The location of this lodge is so nicely picked and set on top of a watering hole is a magnet for wildlife. During the times that we were not out on our gamedrives, we were able to just sit and relax by the pool or at the outdoor patio area watching animals come take sips of water or play. Not to mention my husband and I got to experienced the pool ellis, definitely something special.
Gamedrives: our guide (shoutout to Tegan here) was enthusiastic and knowledgeful and went out of her ways to make sure we got to see everything we wanted. From trees to bugs/insects to birds to animals, I found it fascinating the amount of information Tegan was able to provide us. One night during our stay that a pack of lions came in front of the lodge to rest after a hunt while my husband and I were having dinner. The staff there knew that we had been tracking down the pride during our morning and after game drives. As soon as the lions shown up, we received a call from one of the staff (we were having a romantic dinner on the private balcony of our room that was specially set up by the lodge to celebrate our anniversary as a surprise). The staff was also so kind enough to contact Tegan who came to us shortly to drive us closer to the pack where we could see the lions less than 10ft away from us. What an experience. The lodge and the entire staff body went above and beyond to help achieve our goals for us.
The food, oh the food! The never ending deliciousness that kept on coming our way. There was never a moment that my husband and I felt hungry. And the food there was at another level. Never have I stayed at a place where every dish tasted and presented as it was coming from Michelin Star restaurants. You could definitely tell the chefs here took pride and love in their work.
The staff, I wish I have enough words to describe them here, friendliness just seems like an understatement. Lucas, Eddy and many more took such a good care of us and treated us like Kings and family.
All in all, Mhondoro checks all the boxes!

Dear Kaitlyn Thank you SO much for the wonderful review! Thank you for taking the time after many months, to write such a detailed, in-depth review. It is truly heart warming to read it, and it makes us very proud to be South African. It also made me realize, once again why I chose the hospitality industry, and it makes us super happy to hear that we made your South African Safari holiday as special and as memorable as possible! We are truly blessed with an amazing, dedicated and very special team on the ground. Without them, Mhondoro wouldn't be what it is today. Tegan is such an asset to our team. Her passion, knowledge & enthusiasm is contagious, and we are delighted to hear that you learned so much , and had such a great safari experience. It is great that you had the chance to view and experience the lions from such a close distance; a very special experience indeed, and a memory that I'm sure you will never forget! Good, fresh, tasty food is extremely important to us, hence the reason why we started our 100% organic, sustainable eco farm. Our experienced, talented chefs definitely take a lot of pride in their work, and they love the fact they can work with organic, fresh ingredients from our own farm on a daily basis, to create delicious masterpieces to our guests. Our friendly, passionate front of house team, love what they do, so if you felt like a King & Queen, that is Exactly what we want. Kings and Queens as part of our family, even better! We can't wait to have you back at Mhondoro, hopefully in the near future! Warm Bush Regards,

Where do I begin to explain how magical & perfect Mhondoro is? We chose Welgevonden as it was only 3 hours from Johannesburg Airport and also malaria free. Amongst the selection of lodges Mhondoro stood out to us as special. From the moment we arrived we were blown away. The main lodge itself is stunning but also incredibly comfortable and welcoming. Our two bedroom family deluxe villa was beautiful and oh so comfortable. Each bedroom had its own full en suite plus glorious outdoor shower. Absolutely everything is included in the price: drinks, snacks, delicious meals three times a day, washing and of course the fabulous game drives at morning around 6.30am and afternoon 3.30-4pm. The food was incredible. The amazing chef Simon and his team produced delicious food every day with plenty of menu choices, including meals to suit our pescatarian. The staff were amazing. Isaac, Timmy & Lucky looked after our every need. We had one fun and fabulous game drive with ranger Dwayne then our ranger guide for the rest of our stay was the wonderful Sylvester. We cannot sing Sylvester’s praises highly enough. He was so knowledgeable and anticipated many events that made our encounters with the animals out of this world exciting. There is no doubt we will be returning to magical Mhondoro again, hopefully before too long.

Good Day Thank you so much for taking the time to write this beautiful & detailed review, and thank you for choosing to stay at Mhondoro. Welgevonden is a great choice being such a beautiful, diverse Reserve, where you can find all of the big 5 animals, completely Malaria-free and indeed so conveniently located from Johannesburg! We are delighted to hear that you had such a great time with us at Mhondoro. The Dutch owners, did a great job to balance modern luxury with homely comfortability, so we're happy to hear that you experienced it in such a way. With Mhondoro being an 'Inclusive offering', it definitely makes your holiday with us stress- free, so you really just sit back, relax & enjoy being on Safari! We are grateful to have a wonderful & talented team of chefs, who loves making each dish as fresh, delicious & special as possible. So we are happy to hear that you enjoyed the food of Simon and the team, and that you were well taken care of by Isaac and his friendly butler team. We are very proud of our passionate & experienced guides, and Sylvester is definitely a big asset to the Mhondoro team. His vast knowledge of the African bush, and his decades of guiding experience, truly makes each safari with him a memorable & unique experience, with something new to learn every time. We would love to have you back with us, hopefully in the near future! Take care and all the best, until next time. Warm Bush Regards, The Mhondoro Team

Excellent, perfect, amazing, luxurious. I could go on. From the moment you drive through the gates you are met by your ranger in our case Hien who was professional he is an experienced driver and had extensive knowledge of the reserve and its animals. He made every drive enjoyable attended to all our needs and went the extra mile for us to see the big 5. He also makes the best liquor morning coffee. The lodge was perfect with fantastic staff who were so warm and welcoming you were put at ease straight away. The food was fresh and varied. Our own lodge was very well equipped with a spacious lounge/kitchen area and two double bedrooms with separate bathrooms and outside showers. The standard was extremely high and luxurious. We visited the spa and the treatments by Gift were superb. The tunnel taking you to the watering hole was amazing as was the pool where the elephants regularly drank from. The whole experience at the lodge was off the scale. Excellent & perfect. Thank you

Dear Rachel We are So happy to hear that you had such a fantastic stay at Mhondoro! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this beautiful review. We truly are blessed with such a wonderful team of staff; without each one of them, Mhondoro wouldn’t be what it is! Great to hear that you loved your safaris with Hein and that you learned a lot as well! He is a great guide indeed with a lot of knowledge and experience. We are also very happy that you enjoyed the food. 😊 Mhondoro’s Organic Vegetable farm surely adds to the freshness of daily dishes, and our talented chefs love what they do. The Underground tunnel and the elephants at the pool surely is very special and always a wonderful experience! 🙌 We certainly hope to welcome you back to Mhondoro in future. Until then, take care and all the best! Warm Bush Regards, The Mhondoro Team

I had a great visit here October 2 to Oct 4, 2021. I picked to stay here based on previous recommendations and was so happy for this decision. We were met at the Johannesburg Airport and taken on an approximately 2 1/2 hour drive to the gate at Welgevonden Game Reserve. There, we transferred into a safari vehicle for a 45 minute drive into the lodge, which in and of itself was an excellent game drive. Mhondoro Lodge is a really beautiful set up, with all rooms private and affording stunning views. The villa, however, stands out - understated luxury and absolute comfort across all three bedrooms plus the massive living area. This is a perfect for couples traveling together, or multi-generational family trips. Plenty of space, full kitchen with the provision of a personal chef possible, elephants nightly coming up to the villa to sneak a drink from the private pool, great game viewing from the deck, and a short walk to "the hide" where you can be so close to the animals that it is almost scary. Had our game drives with the ranger Dean, who really had great insight, knowledge and was truly fun - great to see him get just as excited as us when being able to spot so many animals (though sadly, the leopards were elusive during our stay but still give the game drives a 10 out of 10). The food was excellent and certainly plentiful. As often is the case in Africa, the staff was wonderful throughout, and here was no exception. Tremendous service, but also just fun to talk with and learn about their culture, history, lifestyle, etc. Highly recommend Mhondoro.

Dear Kirk Thank you so much for your lovely and very detailed review and for choosing to visit Mhondoro! The relativity short driving distance from Johannesburg makes Welgevonden a popular choice for a Big 5 Safari. The Villa really is special isn't it!? The exclusively of the villa makes it ideal for anyone who wants choices, privicy and not having to worry about social distancing. Dean really is an amazing guide, a true asset to our establishment! His passion and knowledge, makes for the perfect safari experience. Unfortunately the Leopard is the most difficult of the big 5 to spot, however, for all our guests staying with us for 3 days or longer, they are often lucky enough to see all of the big 5. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the service and food so much, our team on the ground, make sure to take care of your every need. All the best, and we hope to have you back with us again sometime in the future. Kind Regards,

Our family group of 8 of us recently stayed at the three bedroom villa. All I can say is photos just don’t do this place justice it’s truly a 5 star experience.
Firstly a huge thanks to Oopou and Tembe (sorry for the spellings) who looked after us for the week at the villa nothing was to much trouble and Harry (6) who can be fussy loved trying what ever Tembe cooked.
In terms for the villa it has a main master suite plus two further large en-suite bedrooms with 4 poster beds, an open plan vaulted reception and dining room onto the kitchen. Outside reception room, dining and separate bbq area. Below this is a small private gym, 2 person spa area and the HEATED swimming pool and terrace with lovely sun beds.
The finishings in the villa are a step above the other rooms as I understand it to be the home of the owner of the whole lodge so overall it’s very luxurious and honestly I feel great value for money.
The drinks selection is good but they do offer upgrades to our surprise these are very cheap at circa £1 a shot. Any other hotel would easily charge the full cost of the drink on an upgrade so this was a very nice touch.
The main hotel consists of 2 to 4 person small suites circa 20, the main bar and eating area and another heated pool. From here you can access the bunker viewing room by the watering hole.
During our stay on 4 occasions the elephants drank from the swimming pool and we had 3 rhinos just eating by the pool for circa 2 hours one day as well so everything you see in photos does actually happen.
If you stay at the villa you get a private guide we have the brilliant Dwayne who really got the kids into it and accommodated all our demands. He was also a master at being in the right place at the right time and on most days it was him telling everyone else where to be and go.
In terms of animals we saw everything with the exception of a leopard, what was a huge surprise was the Rhinos which are abundant and beyond rare these days. This is testament to the set up of the reserve with the last poaching attempt being 9 years ago. The setting is in the hills which we loved as it created so much more scenery vs simply open plains.
For certain we are going to find an excuse to go back so we can share the experience with more of our family!!!
Thank you again to the whole team.

This is a great getaway for Safari seekers. With all inclusive Game drives, Great food and great Company. The staff are all very friendly and accommodating, going the extra mile. The meals were great, and always more than enough. This exclusive lodge is tucked away from the busy life, and here you can relax, enjoy the Game and company. This is very secure, and vehicles are parked inside the Gate wher they are kept safe. From there you are picked up by very professional giudes, who ferry you to the lodge. This Reserve boasts one of few where Rhino are safe and the Big Five roam free. Watch the Game at the water hole from your Breakfast or dinner table, where Elephant sometimes drink from the swimming pool. You will not regret this adventure.

Unforgettable experience! The lodge is exactly in the heart of the reserve, convenient location to be able to get in a relatively short time to all the various sightings (something we had not thought of, but that is to be taken into account). Thanks to our fantastic and expert Chad Guide together with E.A, we were able to see all the Big 5 and many other sightings, where we were often the first to arrive. During the safaris we could fully enjoy these sightings (in the reserve there are in fact precise rules such that there is no overcrowding of cars) and we stopped to have breakfasts and aperitifs in the middle of the savannah, watching the fascinating views of the reserve. The structure of the lodge is furnished with great taste in every detail and is spotless. Since there are few rooms, the atmosphere is very intimate and relaxing. The staff at the lodge, always smiling, friendly and ready to welcome you with a warm towel at the end of each safari, also contribute to making the atmosphere so familiar. As for the food, the dishes we were served at the table were always really delicious and well cared for, above our expectations. In short, the experience that the Mhondoro manages to give you, as mentioned at the beginning, is unforgettable and will remain forever in our hearts!

Overwhelming, exceptional, unbelievable are all words that come to mind. None of them do this place and it’s staff and management team justice. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you feel special and this is a very special place. The Welgevonden reserve is stunning, the lodge is stunning the experience is … stunning! Fireside meals with traditional signing and dancing, a hide to view wildlife, a swimming pool which is regularly visited by elephants and safari drives which were better than my wildest dreams. From cleaning staff, who are highly efficient and very friendly to managers who personally check all is well with you, every person you encounter is the best at what they do. The chefs and waiting staff/butler team are all brilliant. Betty and Simon the food was 5 Star! The spa therapists are heavenly. The guides are exceptional.

I had the most excellent stay and adventure with the Mhondoro family. I say family cause it did seem like home. Mhondoro attention to details and going the extra mile to ensure your stay is enjoyable is very heartwarming. The staff and the lodge is one of the reasons my trip to South Africa was life changing.

We spent 3 nights at this lodge to celebrate my birthday. From the moment we arrived, the management and staff made sure we felt very welcome. Our chalet was super spacious and very clean with a fully stocked bar fridge plus a coffee and tea station. The food was just out of this world, from breakfast to dinner. Their chef and waitrons were very attentive and made sure everything was just perfect for each individual. Dean, our game ranger, was accommodating and super knowledgeable about every aspect of the bush, from plants, birds, insects to the big five (he's an excellent wildlife photographer too). Of the big five, it's only the leopard that we missed out on. My highlight was seeing a cheetah and her 4 cubs stalk, chase a whole group of animals and bring down a zebra right in front of our eyes; an experience of a life-time for all of us! My daughter and wife loved their spa treatments and mani's and pedi's. We will definitely be coming back!!! Everything about Mhondoro was exceptional..

Dear Ishmael Thank you for your very detailed and wonderful review, and thank you for choosing Mhondoro as your lodge of choice to celebrate your birthday! When it comes to special occasions, our competent and professional team on the ground, love making your occasion as memorable as possible. After all, life is about creating those memories with loved ones... Dean is indeed a fantastic guide, with a lot of knowledge and experience, so I'm sure it wasn't by pure luck that you've witnessed a Cheetah kill! We are very blessed to often have great Cheetah sightings, due to Welgevonden's healthy Cheetah population. As food is a very important part of the Mhondoro experience, it's great to hear that you enjoyed it so much! So happy to also hear that you wife and daughter enjoyed their spa treatments! We would love to have you back at Mhondoro in the near future, maybe for a upcoming birthday or anniversary? 😊 Take care, and all the best, until the next time. Kind Regards,

Yes that is no problem. It is also possible that you ask the other WGR lodge to do the transfer to Mhondoro
Dear Sir, Madam,
We are located in a malaria free area. Because we are on 1800 meters high we also hardly have any mosquitoes.
Hopefully this will answer your question.
Best regards the Mhondoro team.
