A paradise place. Absolute rest, we slept so well. Rustic bungalows but perfectly equipped and very fresh, in short everything I love. This place is reserved for people who love nature and quiet without luxury and without appearing. In short authentic!

Long weekend in Petpenoun. In short the location is great and so are the many activities that are included in the room price (golf, water-ski, boating, canoe, tennis, badminton, swimming pool, pétanque, French billiard, board games, guides for excursions in the region). Food is buffet style but good and service staff friendly and efficient.
BUT: if you were in charge of what bills itself as the best holiday hotel in Cameroon would you: provide a piece of hard soap and no toiletries in your rooms that range from 60 to 160 Euros in price? Would you have your pool not ready (they seem to have figured out it needed treatment the day before the long weekend) when you have a fully booked long weekend ahead of you? Would you be unable to provide the boat for water-skiing after the first day because the outboard has not been repaired? Would you bill yourself as 'pension complete' (full board) and then tell the guests when they want to take their first meal that, oh nono full board doesn't mean they won't get billed for every meal on top of the room price? And finally would you let your staff be exposed to furious checking out guests who every single one finds errors in the bills because your bar and food billing system is haphazard and nobody signs for what they consume? I guess you might not. But every single one of these things happened during the weekend and a few more and the owner/manager wouldn't even consider making a gesture like a small rebate or even a free bottle of wine. So Petpenoun - fabulous place - pity about the management!

Very nice place, but access is not very easy. The last 10 km or so, from the main paved road (from Foumbot to Koutaba) is laterite trail. A 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially in the rainy season, although locals, used to this type of road conditions, will use regular cars.
We rented a bukaru along the lake and the accommodation was nice. We stayed there for 3 nights, during the week and were alone. Very peaceful, but, honestly a bit boring. A nice landscape doesn't make it all. Without public electricity, a generator is used to produce provide power, but it's shut down at 11pm (until 6.30am), which means you'll spend the night in the dark. There's no A/C in the rooms. Temperatures in this part of Cameroon make it more or less acceptable, but some people may not like it.
During our stay, the pool was undergoing refection, so we couldn't use it, but it looks good.
Nice 18 holes golf course, with a practice, for those who like this sport.
Good ‘French style’ cuisine.
Staff is helpful.

Don’t stay here this place is absolutely horrible and a rip off. They charge almost a $100 a night for the cheapest room but the standard is absolutely terrible. First there is no running water in the rooms. They turn it off all the time and you have to keep asking the staff to turn it back on and they get annoyed with it. I know it’s Africa but the place charges American prices and they don’t have issues with resources. 3 water sprinklers for the grass are running all day, so water is available just not for the guests. Also, they have an area for the TV where the TV is running all day but no one actually watches it and you can’t even watch the World Cup. In addition, the pool is dirty, water is very filthy, no towels at the pool and the room does not get cleaned during your stay. Initially I thought the food was ok but the day we left I felt very sick and I had only eaten from the hotel. The internet barely works at all even with a Cameroonian SIM card and they don’t take credit card and also no Wi-Fi!
The worst is the driver they sent us to pick us up in Bafoussam. We assumed that a driver that was sent by the hotel would know the way but this was not the case, he got completely lost. The ride is also a rip off and costs normally around 35$ each way for an hour drive. Our driver got lost and took us into the middle of nowhere which was very scary for 2 European women. He constantly had to stop and ask for directions to find the hotel. Instead of 1 hour it took 2 hours in an old car with no air conditioning! Once we finally arrived, I refused to pay the full price because he got so lost and the driver completely freaked out. He was screaming at us for almost an hour at the hotel, he threatened us, he harassed my friend and tried to pull her arm. His behavior was very scary and I was not comfortable around him at all. The hotel staff did not care much, just asked us to pay him. I gave him half the money and told the receptionist to take us to the room at some point. He kept screaming around but we just left. Don’t go there but if you do, tell them not to send Martin as a driver to avoid the same bad experience as we had’

After hearing a lot of positive stories from friends, we decided to go here for a long weekend and check out "The nicest place in Cameroon".

It took us 5 hours from Yaounde, over a lot of badly maintained highways and the last half an hour over a dirt road. When we arrived we were very happy, it really looked great, really a small Paradise!. We were greeted by one of the staff members and quickly after that we had the key to our room, in our case one of the "traditional" lodges on the lake for CFA 75,000 a night. In the room we had bottles of water, a rose on the bed and even the children beds were there (which is something as we had lot's of issues with this in India, a country with very good hotels). So the start was all positive...

There is a lot to do, which you must have been able to read from other reviews, they even have games and lego for the little ones (dirty, but it is there). Later I went into a Canoe, we all went for a swim... I used the bow for a while and we strolled over the golf course and other parts of the terrain.

What I can say is that it looks as though they are understaffed, not only that the staff never had any decent training (I'll give examples later), they lack sufficient supplies (such as towels) and most of the facilities need maintenance (if you mention that you have a golf course, you do need to maintain it well!!).

By the look of it all it was once a great place, but reducing costs lead to no staff at the pool (even though a bar is there and it would be handy is there is a lifeguard present, just in case). The childrens pool was dry and dirty all together... which is a pitty as there were quite a few small ones this weekend. The golf course had high gras everywhere so no chance of really playing a bit.... which is a pitty as i looks as though once it was a great course and the surrounding are really nice!.

At night you can only eat the buffet and well... it was not that great. What was worse for us were the many flies in the restaurant, surely it must be possible to do something about it. We've been in a lot of other places, but never have we seen it like this... We were literally chased by flies during our lunch... it spoilt my appetite!. There are some basic rules about hygiëne, perhaps it helps to simply cover the food, breakfast, once it is taken out of the kitchen. You can buy these covers for that and that at least ensures that the flies have not invested all the bread and pancakes!.

The lodge was nice, we liked it, it leaked during the rain, but that was ok.. even our house in Yaounde has problems with the really heavy rainshowers. it might however be an idear to put some extra lights!... It's so dark you can't see anything unless you open the door... We slept well, but the the bed linnen wasn't completely clean! and as we would like to have extra clean towels in the room or at the pool or the lake side!. because with one towel a person it simply doesn't cover the proces of taking a shower, taking a swim or going in or on the lake... buy some extras!!!. The electricity is not on the whole day, which is fine... but mention that clearly and also take an extra generator, it is really a handy tool also to ensure that the guests in the restaurant or on the terrace are not sitting in the dark!.

My biggest complaint is about the bill.... We had gone with friends and we both checked out bills which was good as they tried to sneak in some extra purchases, such as bottles of sprite and water that we hadn't ordered.. Also they had charged us and our friends for the same bottles, they had put bottles of water on the bill, in dvance, for the breakfast... (our friends paid at night and they had put it for the next day) and they charged us for a dinner our children never had... this is stealing and it even took us some discussion before they took it off in the end... can you imagine?!. In stead of saying "Sorry" they were coming with arguments why we should keep it on the bill... Really?!.

One of the women was friendly and helpfull, but other ones need propper training in customer care... What is so difficult about cleaning a childrens bottle when it is asked nicely?... Why discuss for 5 minutes to do something like that when cleaning it takes you under 2 minutes?... Even in the Netherlands they do this without any problems (and we are not known for our good customer care either).

Another small note to the restaurant... get childrens chairs, children under 6 can't sit well on what you have there and as quite a number of your guests are little children you could make the effort to purchase 4!!.... that would help parents, children and it is just a small purchase.

To conclude: The surroundings are great, it really looks lovely... The water sports facilities are good... enough choice: you can surf, canoe, row or go on a motorboat, table tennis, volleyball/ badminton, tennis court... it all looks fine. The golf course is run down and need urgent maintenance. More important there is a lack of staff and extra towels!... all lodges and rooms seem to be leaking, the restaurant and terrace need urgent maintenance as well... The chairs outside are very old and falling apart, the restaurant lacks choice and childrens chairs... the toilets there were dirty too!. The restaurant needs to look into hygiëne, make an effort to cover the food so not all is invested by flies and do something about them in general. The staff needs propper training in customer care and last but not least check your bills at the end of the stay!.

It has soo much potential, but management/ the owners (didn't see them when we were there) lack funds and/ or the will to invest in it and really make it what it could be!. Most other reviewers must have lived a long time in Cameroon and were happy with something, but it could have been something so much better. In other countries they would get so much more out if this beautiful area!. Invest and make it great (agian) I am sure that people are willing to pay a bit more if they get value for money, but this wasn't!. The CFA 75,000 is just the room price, breakfast is not included (in India, Madagascar, Kenya, Malaysia or Europe this would have been the case for this price).

Surely the best resort in Cameroun.

It is quite far away from Douala - about 6 hours by car but it´s definitely worth the trip.
The traditional style large huts have sufficient space for a family, and for Cameroun standards this is luxury! (expect some large spiders)
The beds are very large and all you need is available (hair dryer etc.).
Restaurant is located just aside the lake and the food is very good for this far away location - the next village is a view km away and the next city is 40 min by car.
On aprox. 200 hectares of land this resort comprises several large huts at rates around 115 € (prices from 2010 incl. breakfast) and also normal rooms which are much cheaper but also simpler.

This price includes the usage of all amenities - such as boat, surfboard, quad, bike, toyota jeep 4x4 (you can drive yourself, keys and maps are in the cars), golf and pool.
I think this is really good value for money and in the evenings one can just sit outside and watch the stars in the sky while temperatures are very mild (thanks to the higher altitude).
This resort is surrounded by volcanos and mountains - it is also nice to walk around and enjoy the rural settings as well as the view from the top of a hill or mountain.
The 4x4 trips are fantastic, one can drive around all day on dirt track roads and pass rivers, drive through 3 - 4 m high elephant grass and see the native villages in the vicinity.

If you come during the week there is usually not many guests, but on weekends it is recommendable to have a reservation (call 00237-685292534 sometimes it might be difficult to reach anybody thanks to "Cameroun telecom" - just try again later in the day or the next day).

I can highly recommend this Resort

We only stayed one night at Petpenoun Lodge. Getting there was slow and bumpy (we drove) but totally worth the long journey. The lake was beautiful and the complementary watersports (SUP, windsurfing etc.) were great. The huts were well furnished and the bathrooms well equipped. Food was well prepared and a buffet with a variety of dishes with a French twist (excellent brownies and eggplant parmigiana) which was a welcome break from the more traditional staples of plantains/rice/meat/fish found at many other locations. This is remote west Africa though so be prepared for spotty wifi (only available in the main lodge) and intermittent power cuts when the generators are overloaded. These aren't criticisms though just things to be aware of at this incredible spot - I wished I could have stayed for a week here.

Beautiful place, comfortable rooms, good service , good food. Not easy to find, but worse the efforts to get there. On a dirt road without proper road signs. Located on a golf course. An atmosphere not easy to forget.

This could be a four or maybe even five star review--Petpenoun is a very nice place in a great location with more recreational activities than available at almost any other "resort" hotel in Cameroon. Alas, it gets an average review because it failed in several important areas.

I'll start with the good. First, read the other reviews which detail the great potential of this resort which include large bukaroo style rooms with king size beds, fairly well-maintained golf course (though the greens could use LOTS of work), serene lake with freely available canoes. Golf and canoe use come with the price of the room.

Now the bad--it took a search of six rooms to get three that had toilet seats, workable light fixtures and lockable door locks. This was our introduction during the first thirty minutes.. The painted concrete floors weren't too inviting either--at this price, you should expect large carpets to cover most of the open floor. It's too bad that the staff did not do a pre-inspection to fix most of these glitches because the rooms themselves looked very good otherwise.

But the bad continued. Once inside the rooms, we found several other annoying issues like maladjusted doors that had to be lifted in order to clear the floor. In the rooms where we found toilet seats, two came off their hinges at inappropriate times. I understand this is a bit picky but as one of the most expensive hotels in Cameroon, you expect more.

Now about electrical power: it shuts off at 2300 (11pm) every night. This would be a great environmental gesture except the entire water system uses ELECTRIC pumps--so those middle of the night trips to the bathroom require a flashlight AND a bucket of water if you or your partner have already flushed the toilet after the witching hour. Same for washing your hands--you'll need a bottle of water close by the sink since there is nothing coming out of the faucet. Trying to do this with a flashlight in your mouth will make for a great story when you get back home, but shouldn't be the case in a hotel that costs this much.

Forget the restaurant except for breakfast. Unfortunately you can't go anywhere else because the nearest town is almost 20 km (12 miles away). So one is stuck with an evening meal which is overpriced (at about $35 per person without drinks). We ordered six separate items the first night--only two were acceptable. Two breasts of duck were ordered medium-rare ("au point") but came back crispy and burnt (well beyond "well-done"). The fish (from frozen stock) was dried and inedible. The scallops in port sauce were shoe leather chewy. The two exceptions: duck breast ordered rare and came back medium (but edible) and the brochette des gambas (large shrimp) which came back close to expectations.

The next night was "buffet-only". Even worse. The beef was overcooked and dry, the vegetables soggy, the rice very sticky and doughy, the chicken tough and dry. Think bad cafeteria food.

You do have the choice of a "light diner" where you can get a starter and dessert for only $15 - 17 which is a much better choice: the salads (primarily avocado and "something else" like grapefruit or tomatoes, etc.) are good and the desserts edible.

Lunch is the same high price as dinner, so we skipped it and opted for some very good omelettes at breakfast. They cost about $4 but get you through the day.

Wine and drinks are reasonably priced for this remote location.

Bottom line: fairly nice but overpriced resort with a less-than-adequate and expensive restaurant. This might still qualify as four stars in Cameroon, since most hotels have these same problems, but when compared to world-wide standards, a three-star rating is generous.

No, I don't think it's possible to have more than 3 persons in the bukarus (lodges), but you can confirm this with them to be sure. I was there in May this year (2016), which is not the peak season, and I paid 75,000 Francs CFA per night (about 115 €). Distance from Petpenoun to Foumban is about 45 km via the paved road (N6). Hope this helps.
