We took a trip to the Yankee/Twins game and stayed here for the night. Aside from very limited parking (4 spots). The hotel is very nice almost too upscale for the area its in. Hotel staff were very helpful. After the game we ventured into the city, front desk people called an uber for us. Overall this place is a surprise. Rooms are on the small side but very nice, bed are comfortable and I had a great view of the city from my room. If I ever go to another Yankee game I will stay here....

So I was admittedly nervous after reading the reviews about this hotel online - concerns about the neighborhood & the protective glass in the lobby.
I came to town to see my beloved Yankees beat the Red Sox (yay!). We walked to the stadium and back, bought food from the halal truck and visited a bodega up the block. I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable- not for one minute.
The room was tiny compared to other hotels I’ve stayed in but the bed was comfortable, towels were soft and water was hot!

The service was absolutely awesome! they are cheerful and friendly and helpful in every way! I can't say enough about the service! The hotel however... Sketchy location (the front desk is behind bulletproof glass). Our room had a lot of little issues that were annoying but which were promptly fixed by the friendly helpful and cheerful staff! They need to have a placard in the bathroom explaining how to make the shower work. If you can't get the shower to work go downstairs and I'll show you on their demo shower which means nobody can figure out how to make the shower work! Their breakfast room was being remodeled and they gave us gift cards to Dunkin Donuts switch was a perfectly acceptable alternative. Overall not a bad place to stay I wouldn't consider it an Ascend in the Choice Hotel Collection but acceptable except for the location. Again I can't say enough about the staff they were really great!

You know you're in trouble when you arrive and the reception is behind bullet proof glass.

They probably rent rooms by the hour.

Cigarette burns littered the bed spread. The pillow cases were dirty. The room smelled. And the walls were so thin you could hear the neighbors having sex.

The people at the hotel were super nice, but their smiles and helpfulness couldn't overcome the fundamentals.

It's a shame when I have to rate an otherwise nice hotel with a '1' rating because of an indisputably unacceptably invasive ID policy that must make the property "Not Recommended".

As a Choice Privileges Diamond Elite member, I stay at Choice-branded properties and Ascend Collection hotels frequently (over 100 times / year). Had it not been for the unacceptable ID policy, I would have rated this property a '4'. But I would encourage those who are considering a stay here to read the following in its entirety and then decide for yourself.

While the hotel itself is not fancy and the rooms are fairly small, they have been nicely remodeled and are tastefully and functionally equipped with comfortable beds, a decent workspace, a small settee, a wardrobe, in-room fridge, and in-room climate control which works well. The Keurig coffee maker was a nice touch, with 3 pods of Starbucks Pike Place coffee for a freshly made brew. The bathroom was likewise nicely updated, spotlessly clean, and the shower delivered an ample supply of piping hot water.

A couple of minor housekeeping items to note ... a used pod was left in the Keurig machine, and quite a few of the previous guest's clothes and some other of his personal belongings were left in the wardrobe. I'm surprised that housekeeping did not notice this.

The internet worked just fine; noise levels in the room were generally quiet, although it was possible to hear voices from the adjacent room while its occupants were talking. It was not loud enough, however, to be a real disturbance.

The neighborhood is a bit sketchy - quite a bit of trash in the streets, a lot of merchandising on the sidewalks, and quite a few folks out and about during the day - but I did not feel unsafe there, even when returning to the hotel on the subway late at night.

Subway station is about 5-7 minute walk from the hotel with easy connections to the #2 and #5 trains to Harlem, Grand Central, and Times Square. The M60 Express to LaGuardia can be caught right outside the 125th Street Station, and access to Newark Airport is easy via NJ Transit from Penn Station off of the #2 subway.

Now the reason why I had to rate this property as a "No Go"...

The hotel has a policy of making a photocopy of the guest's personal ID when checking in. In today's world, where identity theft is a serious issue, having copies of one's personal ID floating around is a highly risky invasion of personal property, and if asked upon check in, I politely decline to permit the copy to be made. I have had on two prior occasions - NOT at this hotel - incidents of misuse of my ID from hotel copies, so I know first hand what these risks are. If the hotel insists on making the copy, and if, at that time, I have no other reasonable options for staying elsewhere, I will automatically rate the property a '1' regardless of how nice it might actually be.

Think about it. I have to ask myself why a hotel feels it must make a copy of the guest's personal ID, and I have yet to come up with any reason that does not cast doubt on the desirability of the property as a place to stay. Most reputable hotels do not have such a policy, so when a hotel does require this, I have to ask why. And the two logical explanations are either a) the hotel attracts a undesirable clientele or has problems with inappropriate activities being partaken in by its guests, or b) the hotel simply does not trust its guests - perhaps because of prior experience, which reinforces the prior reason given. In either case, I find myself questioning the wisdom of staying at any property that feels it must have such a policy. The fact that the front desk is behind a counter-to-ceiling plexiglass shield would tend to reinforce these concerns.

Such policies have no place in properly run establishments of the calibre that a reasonable person would want to stay at. Again, I must restate that I am not suggesting, implying, or stating in any way that this particular hotel has done or will do anything improper with the copy they made of my ID. But identity theft is a real issue today - and even if it weren't, the fact that the hotel requires such copies raises all sorts of red flags regarding the desirability of staying here.

Decide for yourself. If you are comfortable with allowing your personal ID to be copied, then this hotel offers a decent stay. But if it were me, I'd think twice.

Best hotel the Bronx has to offer it's nice clean and rooms are very beautiful. The lobby area of this boutique hotel is warm and welcoming and the lobby staff are very helpful and polite. There are also some nice views of the third ave shopping center from your room. They also, have free wifi and free parking available. The hotel far exceeded our expectations. Will definitely be recommending more family and friends to stay here :)

If 0 was an option, that would've been my choice. This hotel is a complete mess. Very hard to work with, nasty service, room was tiny and stank, as did the rest of the building smelling like weed & cigars etc. I booked a room for my family and I for two nights before even traveling to New York and everything was all set. Next thing you know, I was charged for parking when arrival, which certainly was included with my reservation. I go by my first horrible night, I was told I needed to leave the same day because I only booked for one night, whereas I already payed for both nights. If only I didn't have a proof of my two-night reservation, I would've been sleeping in the streets, especially when that day was a holiday. Besides, when I needed and constantly asked for the manager all I was told was "the manager is busy and I don't think he's coming so...", with the most disgusting attitude.
When it comes to breakfast, there's not any except for stacks of Activia yogurt and stacks of cups/sugar. I wake up at 7:30 am to get myself and my family breakfast and all I see is literally two slices of toast, that's it! Not only that, but the total amount I payed was $693.22 for only two nights. Ripoff+unacceptable service= Avoidance.
I do not recommend this hotel to any unless you want to spend a day or more in the most awful, garbage hotel.

I will start by saying I did not stay at the "hotel"... This review is to explain why. I have business in the area and was excited a new boutique hotel was coming to the area. I went to tour it within the first two weeks it opened. It was very sleek and chic and I was impressed. The person who greeted me ensured me that they were NOT a motel but a hotel. I was glad because I said I could recommend the property to persons I have visiting. The following month when I did have persons coming to visit I noticed that the reservation system had still not been set up. When I went to inquire the new person I met was very rude and obviously had no professional training. I was told they don't take reservations and they only took cash payments. Of course that seemed shady. I observed persons behind me tell them they only wanted a "short stay" and they were given a rate. Sorry - but that equals MOTEL to me.
The reason I gave it a "poor" and not "terrible" is because it does look nice and the first time I went they seemed professional. However, unless things change in the way they operate (setting up a reservation system and accepting card payments) I would suggest people stay away. There are other "real" hotels opened in the area that are good for travelers.

I was looking for a budget hotel near 3rd Avenue, when I happen to find Hotel UMBRELLA.

The moment I checked in, I could sense I had cracked a deal. The property is just 1 year old and it is one the cleanest Hotel I have seen in Bronx.

From the door man to the check in desk, food and beverage everything is exceptional, staff is very polite and helpful.

The location of the hotel is extremely perfect if you are tourist, its 2 mins walking distance from 149 subway station.

Just across the street you can explore the entire 3rd Avenue for shopping. You can also find multi cuisine restaurants nearby.

The hotel has free parking, free wifi. Rooms are state of art design and are equipped with daily amenities

I highly recommend this Hotel to anyone who is in Bronx
LOVE LOVE LOVE Umbrella!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
