The front desk staffs exceeded our expectations. We asked for early checkin and our room was ready at 12noon as promised. We also had to checkout early due to change of plans and they were able to process our refund right away. The hotel is walking distance to Fordham University or you can take the bus. The room is clean.
The room is small and furnitures and carpets are dated. It does not come with breakfast as mentioned when I booked online. The hallway smells like smoke too.

As a Choice Privileges Diamond member, I stay at Choice-branded properties frequently, of which Rodeway Inn is one. I booked a one-night stay at this property primarily based on price, as I just needed a decent place to sleep before catching a morning flight out of LaGuardia, and was willing to put up with some level of inconvenience (location) in order to save some money. Overall, this property provided clean, comfortable accommodations, but there are a few things to be aware of when considering this hotel.

First - the location is not in a great part of the Bronx. I knew that when I booked this hotel, so it wasn't a surprise when I arrived to find a somewhat decaying neighborhood on my 7 minute walk from the subway (D train - 205th Street Station) to the hotel. I did not feel unsafe either during the afternoon, when I arrived, or late at night (well after midnight) when returning to the hotel, but as with any large city, it always pays to be diligent.

The room itself was small but surprisingly nicely furnished - two beds, flat screen TV, armoire, and a small work desk that was adequate for a small laptop. The desk chair, however, sat too low to be of any use, so I wound up having to pull the desk over to one of the beds in order to sit high enough to use my computer. But I didn't stay on the computer very long, because the wi-fi internet signal was too weak to hold a connection. I don't know if this is a problem elsewhere in the hotel, but it was definitely a problem with my 3rd floor room, and had I known that the quality of the internet was so poor, I might have opted to stay elsewhere.

The staff was efficient, helpful, and friendly when I arrived and when I departed. Kudos for that.

The hotel does have two annoying policies that are worth noting.

First, this hotel has those infamous in-room safes for which they automatically charge an add-on daily fee unless you specifically ask for the fee to be removed, provided that the safe has not been used. Many Choice properties have this annoying feature, and I wish they'd get rid of it. Providing security in a hotel, to me, should be part of what one pays the room rate for, and it should not be necessary to charge guests for it. If the hotel is such that they feel that they need to provide each guest room with a safe, then they ought to bake it into their rates - and if not, then they ought to simply get rid of the safes. This is not a big deal in the grander scheme of things - just an unnecessary annoyance.

More troubling is this hotel's policy to request to make a copy of the guest's personal ID upon check-in. I find such policies to be totally unwarranted and, in this day and age of rampant identity theft, unacceptably invasive and inappropriate. I have no issue with a hotel examining my ID and transcribing information from it, but allowing a copy of one's personal document to be made opens the door wide to potential misuse of the copy, even if the hotel has policies in place to attempt to prevent that. It's important to note that I am not in any way suggesting any wrongdoing on the part of THIS property or implying that this hotel would, in any way, misuse such documentation, but a decent, well-run hotel should not need to make a copy of any guest's personal document. Whenever I am asked, I politely refuse such requests - I did so here, and, after a brief discussion with the manager, explaining that on two previous occasions (at OTHER hotels) I had had such documents misused, I was allowed to check in without a copy being made.

I did not downgrade my rating of this property due to the original request, because at the end, the matter was handled satisfactorily. But I mention it here, because other guests who are concerned about identity protection may wish to know about this hotel's policy prior to booking. It is my hope that if the hotel's management reads these comments, that they retract this unacceptable, invasive policy, as it should not be needed in any well-run establishment.

Our room reeked of cigarette smoke, but the front desk personnel could not accommodate a change ("fully booked" and "rooms not ready"). Then our room was not cleaned during our stay of 3 nights - and no, we did not have a Do Not Disturb sign hanging out the door. Finally, a request for additional hangers was a farce with several staff without a common language.

This place is more like a boarding house where people are permanent residents. Cockroaches in room, thin walls, noise from permanent residents, no parking, miniature pillows, although that didn't matter as we spent the night awake killing bugs. The decor in the room is black furniture and a very dark pattern rug so you don't see the roaches until they crawl up the walls. Lots of dried splats on the walls where previous guests had squashed bugs. Checked out early and will never return.

Tiny rooms, forget the breakfast, parking is too small. Because of the traffic of NYC, I arrived after 11am the day I should leave, and I found all my stuff in the lobby. How can they do that, if they have my credit card? The can charge me for the time after,t but to take my things out? I come from a turist country in the Caribbean and I never saw something like that

I had confirmed my reservation over the phone around midday and indicated I'd be arriving late (around 10PM) and was assured that this would be no problem. Upon my arrival, there was a female employee sitting in the lobby listening to music, who I assumed was off duty. The off duty employee must have been sick or something because she kept hacking and coughing loudly periodically, seemingly reveling in the loudness.

After waiting for 10 minutes for anybody to show up, and most likely catching the bird flu from the vile employee, I decided to call the hotel's main line to get somebody's attention. I dialed the number and heard the phone ring on the switchboard in front of me. After ringing about 6 times, it rolled over to a voicemail.

Still no attention from any staff.

I repeated the process by calling again with the same results.

After the second time, I turned to the ebola patient sitting in the lobby and asked "where's everybody at" which was answered with a blank stare, then a shoulder shrug.

I decided to place a third call, and this time it was answered. This call was placed to a hotel down the street that said they had rooms available.

Overpriced-- would not recommend.

I travel frequently for business so I stay at a lot of hotels and I have to say that the Rodeway Inn is really not a very good looking hotel (I'm being nice). The receptionist sits behind inch thick glass that made me feel a LOT less safe. And then I was told that because there was no parking in the small hotel lot I would have to ask to park my car at the gas station across the street but I shouldn't worry "because it only costs about $10". The gas station requires you leave your car key with them but I had no other options.

Just went from this hotel. Reading all reviews from Bronx Hotels, gave the chance to this one. Magnificent choice. We always stay in Manhattan so is unfair to compare it with the Roosevelt. Pleasant stay, clean rooms with safe, coffee maker, little fridge, big flat tv. The bed and pillows very comfortable. The included breakfast is decent. All the hotel have VERY STRONG wi-fi. The D line of subway is 205 St Norwood. This line takes you directly to Rockefeller Center, to 42 St Bryant Park and to 34 St near The Empire State, Macy's and Penn Station. This line ends in Coney Island. All of this is just 5 blocks from the hotel.I felt secure walking at night. The Police Station is close. The bus stop almost in front of hotel. 41 is the bus you have to take. Easy reach Taxis 24 hours (black or grey cars, not yellow). For those whit cars: Parking very small with just 4 or 5 spaces. Gas station in front with convenience store and Dunkin Donuts. We were very satisfied with the stay. The only complaint could be the cigarette odor in the hall. But this is because the floor have smoking rooms. But once in your room, you wont feel it. Don't let that the little lobby affects your perception. Very clean, good service from the employees, free breakfast, free wi-fi and good location for a great price. In New York City you wont find all of this for a better price.

I was charged for a rental that I had cancelled in a timely fashion. When I cancelled I was dealing with a raging fever and the foreign speaking individual kept trying to sell me another date, never noting that I was going to be charged for the room I thought I was cancelling.
I originally called the hotel for a price that I hoped would be better than the ones listed by all the discount sites. The foreign speaking young man was most polite and offered me a discounted price only if I accepted a non-refundable fee (which was all the same as the various discount sites). I refused it and accepted a total fee room (there are almost no other easily accessible hotels in this location). I called to protest the fee when it showed up on my charge bill and another foreign speaking young man obviously had a very limited ability with English and was unable to be of help. I called several other times only to have the phone ring incessantly without anyone answering the phone. My charge company contested the fee, but was told that I had accepted their discounted fee. Since they had NOT sent me a confirmation (tho I had called to ask for one), I had no proof of what had transpired. When I contacted the parent company (Choice Hotels) I received NO response. Perhaps there was a language issue, perhaps this is actually a sly business practice. In any case, I am very disappointed by the lack of responsiveness of this hotel and their lack of willingness to even negotiate a possible resolution fair to both of us. I have notified the Better Business Bureau but would want people to know how unfair their practices had been.
