First I will start with the negatives, which were mainly based on the area, not the hotel. The area is not in a good area, it is the South Bronx after all, and it was about a 5 minute drive off the highway, so on the way there are some sketchy looking neighbourhoods. The second negative factor was the bullet proof glass between the reception staff and the lobby, which at first was not too comforting. The third negative factor was the window view, the hotel is located in a very dense area of the Bronx, so don't expect a great view. If your view is to the west, it would be of Boston Road, which is the subway line, and east would be the parking lot.

Now to the positives, which outweighed the negatives. My room was very well kept and very modern, with wireless internet access in all rooms. The parking area (which is free) is surrounded by what looked like a 15 foot brickwall, so there is no problems with security about your car. There are also cameras all over, which adds the security. The staff was extemely helpful, anything i needed was right there when i asked for it. I lost my keys to my car, and the staff allowed me to stay a few extra hours without charge until a locksmith came and made me a new key. The best aspect was the price. I paid $90 for the room, whereas the next night I stayed in Manhattan and paid $250 plus $30 for parking at the Holiday Inn. Also keep in mind the subway is right across the street from the hotel, which is around a half hour ride into Manhattan.

Again the area is not great, I wouldnt reccommend going out at night, but the rooms were very clean and modern, and the staff was great. I highly recommend it, and it deffinalty beats the prices in Manhattan.

The stay at this HoJo from October 2 to October 5 was not good...not good at all.

You aren't usually going to spend a lot of time in a hotel anyways when you're on vacation in New York. But when you do, you want to enjoy yourself.

Upon arrival we needed to extend the stay another day. I asked to extend the reservation until the Friday. The front desk staff said no problem just ask on Thursday....continued later.

The hotel is situated in the Bronx, one of the roughest areas of New York. The subway was elevated and was right outside the hotel. The constant rumble every few minutes starting at 5:00am was less than an appealing wake up call. The subway line ran until about 1:00am.

The ice machine was out of order the entire stay. We had to ask for a remote control for our room for the tv. When we got the remote it worked intermittently.

On the Thursday, I asked for the extension they said we'll keep your info, when you come back ask for the room. When we came back that night all of the rooms had been given away even though they still had my extension request at the counter. So we had to start our trip home.

A couple useful hints about the hotel if you plan to use it. The morning breakfast was okay (fruit, juice, muffins, cookies, jam &bread)

There is a 24 hour little market type store with a deli just around the corner on Tremont if you need anything.

The bad reviews are terribly OVERBLOWN! I was a little leery, but very glad we stayed here. My husband and I just spent our first of three nights here; I'm in our room as I write this.

We are in room 305 (I had asked for a non-smoking room away from the subway noise) - very comfortable king-sized bed, 4 comfortable pillows. Our room, bathroom, and areas we've seen of the hotel are spotlessly clean and like new. We slept peacefully all through the night. We can still hear the subway, but the sound is not intrusive; in fact, much less noise here than in other places we've stayed in the past.

Items available for breakfast were: coffee (decaf and regular - both very good); fresh, sliced bread (white, wheat, and multi-grain), margarine, peanut butter, and jelly (no toaster, but makes a great sandwich, and you can take it with you); apples and bananas; skim and regular milk; apple juice and orange juice.

There are USA Today newspapers available in the lobby (they appear to be free).

We went to Manhattan last night, and arrived back at the hotel around 10:00pm. We saw no unsavory characters hanging about.

Staff in lobby were very nice and pleasant (you may have to ask them to repeat themselves due to heavy Indian accent).

Being our first trip to NYC, we were unfamiliar with the transportation system; all the New Yorkers of whom we've asked for help have been very friendly and eager to point us in the right direction (hint: many subways - including those NOT underground) have a map on the ceiling that lights up at the current stop, or have lighted messages).

There were so many things wrong with this hotel I don't know where to begin. First I'd like to say that I work for a big hotel chain and I understand how things should be run. The location of the hotel is in a very crime ridden location in the center of the Bronx. The best part about the hotel is that it is directly across the street from the subway and just a short ride into Manhattan. The hotel itself appears to not be maintained because the carpet in the lobby and walls were stained and dirty. The rooms themselves were spacious with a refrigerator and microwave but the refridgerator had sticky gunk at the bottom of it. Carpets in room were also dirty as well as every other surface such as windows, tv, nightstand, coffee table, etc. They didn't even put a new hotel information sheet in the room because thee one that was there had been written all over from the previous guest. Sadly that was not the worst part of my stay. Because this hotel lacks in security, the person next door mine was raped. She was followed from the subway and to her room at 4am. When my friend and I came in from sightseeing at 2:30am we noticed that the hotel is not secure at all. The front door is left ajar, there's no security that asks for a room key, and the gentleman at the front desk sits in a corner with headphones on. You would think that with a situation this serious they would have done more to up security but they did nothing. We only found out about the situation after checking out of the hotel and being bombarded by 6 different reporters. I don't recommend this hotel to my worst enemy and this place should be shut down.

Our room had rodents in the AC units. We were switched to another room, (but not without a major fight with the management) the room was even more detestable then the rodent infested room before it. The room wreaked of cigarette smoke, the walls were water stained and the bed was straight up disgusting. I can't believe that the health department has not shut down this establishment. Please do not waste your time reserving a room at this hotel - run for the hills! If my overall review doesn't scare you maybe the sounds of the late night trains will.

Not good for family with children.Very unprofessional, drugs and prostitution throughout their facility and neighborhood. There was a bloody syringe in the hallway. Customer service desk was incompetent. I have stayed at numerous hotels and have never had the experience I had with your establishment.

My fiance and I have stayed at this hotel twice in the past year and it's one that we intend on coming back to. The area's not as bad as one would expect. Maybe it's just because my fiance grew up in the Bronx.

The managers were so nice. The rooms were well kept and actually very clean. Subway station is right there. And it's surprisingly pretty quiet.

A definate A+++++++!

Day 25 / Aug / 2014, around 9:30 pm, to do checkin on hojo New York, Bronx, I preferred to pay in cash, the clerk demanded money at the time of my entry. The value of 3 days was $ 299, delivered three $ 100 bills, he hid one of the notes and said that I had only paid $ 200. I had to pay over $ 100. I went to the room save the bags and returned in reception asking to see the images from the camera, this time the attendant said he cheated and gave me $ 100, was very apologetic. Attendant was a thin caucasian boy, do not know the name.

Absolutely horrible experience. 1st get to the lobby and a discusting stench of dirt. Get to the room open the lights, and in the bathroom infested with cockroaches. After remove the bed cover to notice the sheets with hair all over the bed . Sheets seemed to not have been changed. Ask them to change sheets which they did . Go to the bathroom and behind bathroom door was a dirty towel hanging . Bathtub full of pubic hairs . In the morning we go down to the breakfast room , I decide to open the doors in that room , so opened doors where they had the fridge and freezer, absolutely disgusting cockroaches on top of the freezer , and not one or two . They say free wi-fi in the rooms

We spent two nights in this hotel to show my cousin New York. I've seen a lot of crazy places on this planet but they all must have learnt from HoJo. It's just freaky. Here are the good things I can say about this place: it is close to the subway and they provide free parking. Full stop. They gave us a smoker room without even asking and were unable to change that. Not that it would have made any difference, the other rooms (my cousin got a non-smoker) and the reception area were not any better. The whole building is old, it smells, and it is dirty. The subway is running almost directly through the rooms. You don't wanna check who else you share your bed with (yes, they do have six legs),don't expect the wifi promised would really connect you to the Internet, and don't even think about using any of the electrical devices provided (tv, hair dryer etc). Expect a loud and noisy night maybe with some police presence during the night (probably a good idea given the leftovers I've seen on my way to the breakfast room in the morning). Staff is friendly but cannot even provide an additional blanket within one hour. Coffee maker and windows are broken (probably to make the subway even more enjoyable), bed has holes from cigarettes. All in all: please stay away unless you really want to get the adventure. Even for that you may find better places in Iraq or something. It is a nightmare. And now I will leave the place not without marking it in RED in my personal travel map: Never again....130 bucks per room per night. I've learned my lesson....
