Our stay at Kambaku River Sands was unbelievably wonderful. The attention to every small detail was outstanding, from beautifully presented meals to words of wisdom left in the rooms. The rangers and trackers were knowledgeable and personable, making sure that the bush experience was safe and exciting. I enjoyed the pace of the day so much, from the sunrise safaris with coffee breaks in the bush to the evening rides with drinks in the sunset. Every staff member was professional, and the entertainment with the meals was great. One evening we dined outside in the dry river bed with elephants keeping us company nearby! I will never forget my stay at Kambaku River Sands and I hope to return soon with my family.

We enjoyed the Kambaku river sands accommodation, it is very clean, and we loved the rooms that have view to the outside in case some animal crosses. It is a camp open for wild animals to cross. During day time you can walk as you please, just aware of what happes in the surrounding and you can always walk into any room along the way in case of emergency since they are not locked. When it gets dark, a guide has to walk you if you need to move around.
We were able to see the big five in the safari, and we loved the guides who made it possible. We also loved the service, and the honeymoon surprise they gave us. We were lucky that a herd of around 20 elephants that came to drink at the pool and were able even to swim while they were drinking. Also, the food was AMAZING! You normally get to enjoy dinner with everyone else who stays there, it is a bit like a family sensation. We also loved the spa treatments we had, the massages and the sauna were very nice.

Highly recommended

Where do I begin?! Our guide was Palance and our tracker was Kenny. This was the best experience I’ve ever had while traveling. Palance is extremely knowledgeable and he really took great care of us. He was able to answer every question we had and we saw the Big 5 several times. The main lodge bar and pool was great to hangout during the day. You can see several animals throughout the day at the lodge, which was really cool. The staff was amazing as well, they catered to all of our needs and went above and beyond. The rooms are huge and have an awesome patio to sit and also an outdoor shower I used which was great.

We also went to the spa and got massages which were perfect. I’d actually go out and say that it was the best massage I’ve ever received which is saying a lot. The spa is really cool and has a pool as well.

The only knock I have on this place and so did other guests we met. It was brought up by every guest we spoke to. The WiFi does not work in the rooms. Unfortunately, I was not able to answer emails and calls for work when I would have done that in my room. Another guest was working at the front lodge during the day for the same reason. Also, we are huge college football fans and wanted to watch the game after dinner. We were able to stream it at the lodge. That meant that the staff had to wait there rather than go to sleep. So 5 of the staff had to wait around which we felt bad about. We would easily go to our rooms if it worked in there. The simple solution is just installing boosters to each room. This is a simple and not expensive and would make this place perfect.

My partner and I spent 3 nights at Kambaku River Sands earlier this month. It was the first reserve we travelled to and on our first two game drives our guide Palance and tracker Kenny were able to show us all of the big 5 and so so so much more! On our final night we were blessed to witness a pride of lions hunting and killing an Impala and then the resulting commotion of them eating it.
Johann the manager was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet him, Palance, Kenny, Realize and all of the other staff who made this an unbelievable experience!
The accommodations and food were outstanding. We loved our huge tub and outdoor shower as well as the deck on our chalet where we sat and watched 5 giraffe within minutes of our arrival.
Every meal was excellent and the chef did a wonderful job accommodating my dairy allergy.
I had the 60 minute hot stone massage one day and it was wonderful and relaxing. Don't hesitate to try it!!
The staff did a fantastic job of following covid protocols and we felt safe the whole time we were there.
One last thing to mention, this lodge uses Land Rovers while the other lodges we visited on our trip used Land Cruisers. Land Rovers win hands down in our opinion especially for comfort.
We truly hope that one day we can make it back to South Africa and Kambaku River Sands again.

My four days stay at the newly redecorated Kambaku River Sands Lodge was so so good. My HUGE stand-alone suite was extremely well appointed with matching colour tones of aqua and white. The bathroom is spacious with generous indoor and out door shower. Towelling gowns for him and her as well as slip-on bowling slippers are provided. A coffee station and fridge with decorative bottles of ice water assist in making one's stay comfortable. There is aircon for the summer and a view of wildlife is unsurpassed. I had a magnificent bull elephant with attitude storming around in the trees just outside.
Meals are special with everyone sitting at the same table making a comforting change for the single traveller.
The boma with its twin circular fireplaces, comfortable chairs and a wide selection of books is more than inviting.
What struck me most was the attention to detail on every level. It was WOMAN's Day during my stay. Each woman was presented with a beautifully packaged unstructured beautifully designed jacket.
Wild life sightings were unsurpassed, I saw four leopards in their individual trees each with its own kill, a pack of wild dogs, a breeding heard of elephant and a new coalition of six magnificent male lions new to the area.

Our tour ranger, Juju and tracker, Douglas were masters of their craft. They were able to provide insights and commentary on animal life in ways that were educational and engaging. Each safari drive taught us something new in very close contact with lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, hippos, etc, where we were within 3-5 feet of these wild animals.

Shereen and her housekeeping team were extremely attentive!! We were blown away by their individualized attention our preferences on food, drinks, and even the pillows in our room.

We were totally impressed with the lodge’s focus on renewable energy and eco consciousness.

The facilities, food, safari trips, spa were all top notch! We HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Kambaku River Sands!!

Kambaku River Sands was my first safari experience and it somehow exceeded expectations. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better place to stay for a safari in South Africa!

The staff was so attentive, thoughtful and friendly. Our guides, Phanny & Rifose, were top notch and found us not only the Big 5, but the Big 7! They were so knowledgeable and patient—answering all of our questions before, during, and after our game drives.

The room was immaculate—so much space, an incredible bathroom set up (indoor shower, outdoor shower, and soaking tub), comfortable bed, stocked mini-fridge, A/C and a window to wildlife (we saw nyalas, zebras, and elephants pass within view). The common space was amazing—comfortable seating, expansive views with wildlife constantly passing through (including elephants taking a drink from the pool!), and a full bar. The food was delicious and plentiful (I'd recommend taking advantage of the biscuits in the red box).

We got 2 game drives per day—1 early morning (5:30am wakeup), 1 in the evening (3:30pm to dark). Brunch and plenty of downtime in between (we took full advantage of the spa—massage, sauna, cold plunge). Dinner and an early evening afterwards. An idyllic vacation schedule.

Not always the case, but we saw everything we could've asked for. Lions, elephants, cape buffalo, white rhinos, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, a ton of eagles (Wahlberg's, Tawny, Martial) and other bird life, zebras, hippo, honey badger, mongoose, antelopes (impala, kudu, etc.), giraffes, etc.

Kambaku somehow made the experience both relaxing and adventurous. When I come back to safari in South Africa, Kambaku will be number 1 on my list.

We have more than 20 years of African discoveries and in particular several experiences in South Africa which remains a safe bet in terms of safaris.
It was our first discovery of Timbavati which is a magnificent reserve easily accessible by plane from Johannesburg with abundant fauna and extraordinary wildlife scenes (the big5s in two days + the wilddogs!!!)
Kambaku river sands is just perfect for 4 nights: the location, the chalets, the staff and the rangers (Special mention to Julius and Douglas) the team is both very attentive and just relaxed, a very good atmosphere as we like . The food is of high quality (even if it is not yet up to European standards). This lodge really deserves time for discovery and photography.
In summary, a superb stay, superb scenes of wildlife and beautiful encounters !

There’s so much to say about this place, but one word is plenty for me…AMAZING. This place gave me, my wife, and my mother in law an experience we will never forget. The staff accommodates every want and needs during our stay, rooms are extremely tidy and well kept, the food service was excellent, and the whole experience felt extremely intimate with our interests at priority. Lastly, our tracker and ranger were extremely thorough during our game drives, as well as enthusiastic about the whole experience. They answered all questions thoroughly, as well as made us feel extremely safe during the drives. Their guidance and teachings made it feel like a very intimate time. I will highly recommend this lodge to my colleagues and family/friends as a must if you go on safari!

Three couples enjoyed 3 nights at Kambaku River Sands with Nathan and Rennie as our guide and tracker. They worked very hard and showed us great animals on our safari rides in the mornings and afternoons. We were greeted after our rides with hot towels and drinks to welcome us back. The brunch and dinners were great and we never had an empty glass! The rooms were comfortable and large for each couple with great housekeeping. We had a couples massage which was definitely worth it during our safari naps each day (11-3 pm).

Thanks, Kambaku!
