Monwana is located in the private 14,000-hectare Thornybush Game Reserve, and is part of the Greater Kruger National Park, a natural ecosystem of almost 2 million hectares with some of the most exciting wildlife viewing on earth. Here the symbiotic partnership between tourism and conservation has created a spectacular wilderness where animals have learned over time that they are safe and respected. In return, we are invited into their sacred kingdom. Enjoy an unhurried Big 5 private safari – personal and uncrowded, with close contact animal encounters in the safe hands of expert guides and trackers. The wildlife density on this tract of land is quite extraordinary, thanks to the rivers, landscapes and vegetation. Game drives head out early morning, and late afternoon into the evening. Guided bush walks are also on offer. We’ve designed a lodge to be lived in, where the outside is invited in. Double volume vertical space, massive cathedral windows, and doors that open wide mean that you are part of the bush wherever you may be. The lodge’s facilities have been carefully designed to allow for sociable spaces and privacy in equal measure. Facilities include a lounge, bar, wine cellar, wraparound wooden deck, pool area, gym, spa, and safari boutique. With never more than 8 rooms occupied, with a maximum of 16 guests, Monwana’s environment is always intimate and private. You have the choice between Suites, Residences (Woodland and Savannah), and the exclusive Monwana Villa. Each of the rooms occupies its own unique space in the African bush, where you will feel as if it is just you in this vast natural habitat. We know how magical the atmosphere is, and have created spaces for you to enjoy it. Recline on the deck, take a shower in the open or cool off in your private plunge pool. Every amenity has been personally tested – from thread count to body lotion to slippers – to ensure every creature comfort is met. Between the hours when you are out on safari, the choice is utterly yours as to how you experience Monwana. You may choose to be sociable at the poolside or the bar. Or perhaps you’d prefer a moment of your own in quiet reflection in the swing chair on the deck, or reading a good book at the cosy fireside in the lounge? You’ll surely want to try a private wine tasting in the cellar, and a dinner for two under the stars. Or a personal picnic somewhere special may be more up your alley… Of course there are never enough hours in a day when it comes to healing and revitalising body, mind, and spirit in the sanctuary of the spa. a gentle sensual sanctuary of elements, including stone, water, air, metal, and wood. Relax completely at the hands of our professional therapists, with nothing but the sound of running water, leaves rustling in the wind, or the splash of an antelope drinking from the pond outside your treatment room.

We had the best 5 days at Monwana Lodge. The food was fabulous. i am gluten free, lactose free and a whole bunch of other weird allergies! The chef did a fabulous job of creating delicious food for me that was separate from everything else and the serving staff was very aware.
The game drives were unbelievable and Roland was an amazing guide. We was so many once in a life time animal behaviors. Larissa made my birthday special and we loved watching the animals come to drink from our deck. I can't say enough good things about the 5 days we stayed there. BTW if you go stay at least 5 days as the animals are free to wonder in and out of Kruger into the Thornybush property.

Hi there audof14him, thank-you so much for leaving this review of your stay at Monwana Lodge! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your birthday here with us, and that you had such a wonderful time. No two days are the same when it comes to wildlife in their natural habitat - so 5 days on safari can't get boring, especially when we have, as you say, animals that are able to move freely between the Kruger National Park and Thornybush Nature Reserve. Hope to see you back again some day.

We had an amazing time on this part of our honeymoon!! We saw all of the animals we wanted to see and more thank you to Roland (guide) and Nick (tracker). Both are very knowledgeable, and great at making you feel safe and finding the animals. They are respectful and we felt the animals were happy with the distance between us and them. We tracked a leopard for two days and when we finally saw it sitting in a tree it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. On our second evening after our afternoon game drive, we returned to the lodge to find a candlelit bath run for us with champagne and were treated to our dinner on the deck outside our room. As we sat on the deck, we saw hippos enter the watering hole right in front of our room. Breathtaking! The food is great, the staff polite and lovely and the experience luxury but remote. Don’t think twice about booking!! Compared to the other lodges, it was really reasonably priced.

I was recommend to stay at Monwana by family who has spent their life going to lodges and safaris in different areas. According to them, the best lodge with the best sightings. I can now 100% confirm that. The staff knew us all by name and the service from the very start was exceptional, but also very comfortable in a way that you felt part of the family. The chef was incredible and went out of her way to accommodate our tastes and presented us with incredibly delicious, colourful and healthy meals. The guide and tracker were both very passionate and made sure we saw pretty much everything and they made the smallest things interesting. The guide even took photos and videos (much better than we did) and airdropped it to us on the spot. The decor is super stylish and the use of spaces very comfortable and luxurious. Thank you to Drienie, Jess, Serene, Natalie, Robbie, Al, Nick and Rivonia for making us feel so welcome and at home. Oh, the wine cellar is also really good!

What a treat it was to have spent three nights in Monwana in the Thornybush private game reserve. We were warmly welcomed to this luxurious lodge, by Drienie and her friendly team, who looked after our every need.

During one of the morning game drives, we were surprised with an incredible sit day down breakfast in a open area of the game reserve- what a treat!

The attention to detail and the food at this lodge was remarkable .The lodge was beautifully decorated,

We saw so many wonderful sighting on our game drive. Lions, wild dogs, rhinos, buffalo, elephants and leopard with cubs, and many more little things.

We had all the luxuries of underfloor heating, hot towel rails, heated pools, with out the guilt as the lodge uses solar technology.

For me, this lodge was so relaxing, that I felt I was home. I am so looking forward to #cominghome again

Perfection! We were lucky enough to stay at Monwana for 5 nights in September 2022. We simply wish we had more time there. We have been to other lodges and simply Monwana stands at the top. The service, accommodation, and experience is unmatched. The lodge and rooms have beautiful décor with a modern flair but still retain their bush roots. Every staff member cared about us being a guest and treated us like family. The property uses the slogan “Coming Home” and that truly says it best. Monwana became home. The safari viewing was exceptional but as we have seen, that is a product of the passion of the ranger/tracker team. Daniel (our ranger) and Ish (our tracker) (collectively known as “Danish”) poured their heart and soul into ensuring our safari was unforgettable and meaningful. They took the time to teach and enlighten us about the bush and the various species that call it home. They had the patience and determination to actively track the animals that were difficult to see. Monwana is a true luxury experience through and through. The food is of the highest quality and care goes into the presentation of each meal. We feel incredibly fortunate to have stayed here and can not wait for the next time! Highly recommend without reservations.

Wonderful Memories!

My family’s visit to Monwana created amazing lifelong memories. The resort itself is over the top beautiful from the grounds, comfortable dining-bar/family room, deck viewing the watering hole, to the luxurious suites. ‘Coming Home’, their tag line, is how the staff makes you feel. While having lunch at Monwana you might be visited by a herd of elephants, impalas or see a graceful mother Egyptian goose swimming with her babies. While safely being led to your room in the evening you might hear the roars of Lions calling out to each other.

All this magic is topped only by the wonderful staff who become your extended family. The little touches as remembering everyone’s favorite beverage (especially the kids), little notes on your bathroom mirror at night, facts of animals and insects put on your bed in the evening and safari happy hours all show an unmatched attention to detail. Our ‘Butler’ Evelyn was over the top taking care of all the details to every meal, coffee and happy hour. And, the chef put together healthy, amazing meals which could (or not) be as exotic as you choose.

Last but not least our Safari Guide and Tracker…. Rogan and Ishmael! Ishmael, with over 24 years of tracking experience was amazing to watch perform his skills and never leave us disappointed. The respect between Rogan and Ishmael shows in how the two work together through hand signals and very little words. Rogan’s ability to read animals to get us the best view was amazing and his knowledge of animals, botany, lizards and bugs is unmatched. Over our safari rides we saw more animals than we could have expected including the ‘big five’ and to top off all our rides we saw the ‘big five’ on our last afternoon ride! Thank you to Rogan and Ishmael!

Amazing experience created by amazing people!

Stunningly renovated with the most beautiful rooms! The attention to detail is commendable! Everything is absolutely wonderful!

Being avid safari travellers I can certainly say this is one of the best lodges we have ever stayed at.

The rooms are spacious with a large private heated plunge pool overlooking a active waterhole.

The staff is truly amazing and we felt right at home!

Our guide, Daniel, and our tracker was extremely informative and very friendly! I do not think there can be better!

The food and dining experiences created was surreal!

We can not wait to be back very soon!!

There should be more than 5 stars for Monwana - from the second you arrive until after you have left, the beauty and elegance of the lodge and the African bush stays with you. Their slogan is "coming home" and the team at Monwana excelled at making you feel like you are at home with your favourite family members. The guides and spotters are next level professionals and the animals wildly magical. Delicious meals that change daily presented by a personal visit from the chef, enjoyed metres away from a watering hole. Each chalet has its own private pool that feels like its part of the surrounding bush. The lodge is off-grid and is built in conjunction with nature. Long winding walkways wrap around trees, connecting the 8 chalets to the main lodge area. Personal touches are everywhere. 5 stars are not enough. Monwana is a must visit

We were greeted by the Monwana team on arrival after an overnight flight from the Uk. The lodge brand is ‘ coming home’ and we were welcomed as if we were indeed. The Lodge is stunning having been recently rebuilt with the best of everything the natural world has to offer from the walkways built around the existing trees, the water hole the thatched roof , copper bar etc etc.

We were shown to our room and the lodge by Jess and the room was wow. Overlooking the water hole with a pool on the deck, sitting area , dressing room, kitchen/bar, huge bathroom and open air shower.

The lodge includes 2 game drives each day breakfast lunch supper and afternoon tea as well as coffee stop and sundowners on the games drive. Natalie the chef is a wonder and caters for all tastes with several choices per meal. The cakes and morning muffins were to die for! The waiting staff could not do more for you and Evelyn who looked after us was amazing. One other important factor is the wine cellar which you are invited to go into (down to) and pick the bottle of your choice for dinner.

So for the main deal , the wildlife. This is our 3rd trip to the greater Kruger but this was the best experience in no small part to Daniel and Fenouti our intrepid ranger and tracker. The experience was informative but fun and we even managed a bush walk which was fantastic. We saw everything and more including the ‘big 5’ and were in awe of their enthusiasm and also the sheer joy of finding animals, reptiles and birds that they have either not seen or certainly had not been seen for a while.

Please see our photos and you will get a sense of what ‘coming home’ means.

Love it and hope to return.

I know it's clichéd to say it's like "coming home" - but honestly, with the staff greeting you by name, and saying "welcome home" instead of just "welcome", you have no choice but to feel as if you're arriving home. And what a sumptuously luxurious, warm, friendly and thoughtful home it is! Nothing is too much effort. The food is generous and delicious - and the iced coffee is perfection in a glass.
Thank you, Monwana family, for a truly special homecoming experience.
