Arathusa Lodge in Sabi Sands was the final stop on our 16-day safari, and its luxurious touches provided a welcome retreat after days of self-driving. As the most expensive lodge we’d ever booked, it certainly lived up to expectations. Our suite, overlooking the waterhole, was expansive and tastefully appointed, with large armchairs and huge windows that offered unobstructed views of the wildlife activity from the comfort of our room. The elegant finishes throughout the lodge were exceptional.

The staff were attentive and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. Winnie and Blessing were both fabulous, always attentive to our needs. The food was incredible, though so plentiful that we occasionally opted out of courses, which sometimes prompted concern from the staff. A special mention goes to Sté, who made our stay memorable with her warm hospitality, especially when she arranged a private anniversary dinner with sparkling wine overlooking the hippos at the waterhole.

Another standout was Johan, who was not only professional when showing us to our room and around the lodge, but also exceptionally kind and thoughtful. My husband, who had driven for most of our trip, opted out of a couple of drives due to exhaustion and some difficulty following the guide’s explanations. Johan took the initiative to seek him out, making sure he was okay and offering a considerate check-in that meant a great deal to us.

The game drives at Arathusa were spectacular. The lodge’s collaborative approach with neighbouring properties, sharing intelligence about animal movements and managing viewing numbers, ensured a high-quality experience. We were never jostling for a view, even during remarkable sightings like a large bull elephant carcass that drew the attention of multiple male lions, including the Black Dam male and Kambula males, along with the Nkuhuma pride. We were also fortunate to see Xidulu the leopardess and her son Nhenhe, as well as Kuchava with her young cubs.

The group in our Land Cruiser was wonderful, adding to the enjoyment of each drive with lively conversation and shared excitement over sightings. While our guide was knowledgeable and a skilled driver, his overly assertive style sometimes made it difficult to connect. His explanations of animal behaviour were sometimes difficult to follow and when he followed up with direct questions using guests’ names, it left some feeling a bit on the spot. In fact when a new couple joined our group some guests moved to the back of the landcruiser in the hope that they could relax a bit more. After mentioning that I had been on previous safaris, I instantly regretted it, as it came up when I struggled to answer a question, which was slightly uncomfortable. However, this didn’t detract significantly from my experience, as I was more focused on the incredible wildlife and I knew I could catch up on any details later.

There is no doubt that Arathusa is an exceptional lodge. The beautiful setting, the incredible sightings, and the attentive service, especially from staff like Johan, Sté, Winnie, and Blessing, made for a fantastic end to our safari adventure.

From the moment you arrive and greeted with smiles, refreshing washcloth and a cold juice you feel right at home.
The staff will make every accommodation to far exceed your expectations.
The food is top shelf and the cocktails flow.
The cottage we stayed in had every amenity you could ask for including insect repellent.
Most importantly the trackers and guides were awesome. We saw the big five and a lot of additional animals.
Arathusa is FIRST CLASS.

There is no need to search any longer once you have found Arathusa.

We have been very fortunate to have been to a number of wonderful Safaris, not only in South Africa, but also in Kenya, Zambia and Botswana, but Arathusa was totally incredible and far far exceeded our expectations.

From arriving by a small plane, my Mother (who is in her 80th year and very active) and I for our 4 night stay, were picked up by our delightful guide, Mike and taken to the lodge where we were greeted by the most wonderful friendly staff.

As our perfect large lodge named as Bushwillow was in the bush with a plunge pool with only a small electric fence around the pool, we had a safety briefing of what to do in case we encountered any animals. Little did we think that we would encounter any so close.

2nd morning our tracker, Eugene, called to say that he would be bringing the vehicle right to our door as there was a pride of lionesses in “our garden”.

3rd morning our tracker, Eugene, called to say that again he would be bringing the vehicle right to our door as there was a herd of elephants in “our garden”. After our perfect morning drive and delicious breakfast, we walked back to our accommodation, to find a leopard in “our garden”.

Truly amazing experience.

The food here is delicious and plentiful and the wine and cocktails are free flowing.

Besides seeing all the big 5 so close up by the 2nd drive, it’s the staff here in Arathusa that makes this lodge the best we have ever been to. All the Team we had the privilege to meet, are the most friendliest, glorious and happiest. A special shout out to Mike and Eugene for being the greatest trackers and guide and being so passionate of your jobs (friends just cant believe the video I took of the leopard climbing that tree), Sheillah for looking after us during the meal services, the team who kept our accommodation so clean, the bar staff for keeping us dehydrated (the best martini expresso ever) and who could forget Ronnie for his story telling and jokes. Don’t ever change.

We do hope that we will be in a position to visit again.

Seven months ago, in April, I contacted Arathusa directly via their website to make reservations for our group (myself and my husband as well as my parents) to stay 3 nights at Arathusa. In our correspondence I specified that we would need 2 rooms between the 4 of us (2 couples). Days later we received our first bill (roughly first half is paid up front, second half paid approximately a month out from the trip) and the email subject line was my last name and x4 (indicating a reservation for 4 people) along with the confirmation number. Between paying this first bill and the second, final bill I corresponded with Arathusa about a potential transfer (ride) from the nearest airport, dietary restrictions, and even a special request for my dad’s birthday, which was one of the main reasons we had chosen this time period for the trip.

Fast forward to just 5 days before we were scheduled to fly to South Africa (and 10 days before we were scheduled to arrive at Arathusa): I received an email from Arathusa saying “We have realized that your booking was in error made for only one room, accommodating two people, which has resulted in an overbooking situation. Unfortunately, we do not have any additional availability to accommodate all four of you at Arathusa for your dates.”

I felt absolutely sick to my stomach.

First, they offered to reschedule our stay for different dates, which was not feasible at all due to the surrounding logistics (international flights purchased, all other trip details and lodging confirmed, time off of work scheduled, other family traveling to stay with our children, etc.). Secondly, they offered to help facilitate us staying at a neighboring lodge, which we initially jumped on out of sheer panic and desperation. However, once Arathusa told us the price would be even higher and did not offer to cover the difference we began to look at reviews of this other lodge and felt it was not what we wanted. We decided not to pursue this option either and were completely on our own for finding a new safari lodge 5 days before we would get on our flight to South Africa. What a nightmare.

Via a phone call, an Arathusa representative told us that “the fault was with the customer” because our bill listed the number of rooms as 1. It is true that we didn’t notice this error on the bill. However, we would have liked to see Arathusa take more responsibility for the mistake since we were very clear in all our correspondence that we needed two rooms.

Arathusa has many other wonderful reviews, but this was my personal experience with them.

This was our second time on safari as we had previously stayed at all luxury safari lodges on a 9 day safari in Tanzania last year. Booking this lodge seemed like a way to save money and have a nice stay after reading the reviews. Cons: our safari guide was difficult to hear, (didn't speak very loud) and his english wasn't very clear. Our room needed updating, especially the bathroom. When we would wake up in the morning there were bugs everywhere. We had to put tissue in the door as it was partially open and things could get into the room. We literally stuffed tissue 1/4 of the way up the door to try and prevent bugs from entering our room. The phones didn't work but 1 day while we were there. When we tried to call the front desk we were unable to get ahold of anyone but were suppose to have escorts at night due to the wild animals. The biggest disappointment was having to be seated with the people you are in a safari vehicle with for every meal. This was exhausting. We didn't look forward to any meals due to this. We were not given the chance to eat 1 meal by ourselves. That means for every meal you must make small talk with others and then be on safari with them all day. We couldn't wait for our time to end here so we could just relax by enjoying meals by ourselves. Pros: The food was good and Winney, the massage therapist was excellent. The staff was kind and Annika was very accommodating.

We had the best stay at Arathusa. From the moment we got to Hoedspruit airport we were thoroughly looked after, welcomed with warm towels to freshen up, a delicious juice and really friendly faces to show us around. The entire experience was seamless, we didn't once have to look for someone to fill up drinks, help out with any questions, assist with travel home it was done before we even thought of it.
The lodge itself was beautiful, we went for a water facing lodge which means you can walk yourself home after dinner (bush facing you are accompanied by a ranger) we watched hippos and elephants at the watering hole from our lodge which was pretty special.
The food is fabulous and the staff cannot do enough to make you feel welcome and at home. We were worried as not many reviews mentioned the food but its brilliant, and if you are veggie/vegan they will remember and make sure you aren't a second thought from the second you get there. Ronny, our groups designated waiter, made us feel so at home and we thoroughly enjoyed his company. We'll miss Ronny!
On the Safari rides we had so much fun with De Beer & Ishmael - so insightful and made us feel really safe and gave us the best experience - better than I thought possible. We saw the big 5 in the first 24 hours, which was very lucky. I cannot recommend Arathusa enough, the staff made us feel so at home it was difficult to leave. I hope we are lucky enough to come back soon! Unforgettable trip. Sadie & James.

What a wonderful place and experience. Arathusa Safari Lodge is in a beautiful location, beautiful establishment that is well maintained, friendly and helpful staff who work tirelessly to make your experience the best it can be. They all seem to do this not only as a job but as something they truly love doing and are proud of. I wish the staff and the establishment continued success. They deserve it.

Absolutely perfect four night stay at Arathusa. I would say that the value for money is great for those looking for excellent game viewings, beautiful lodgings and who are looking for something slightly less expensive than say Singita or &Beyond. Lodgings were beyond spacious and comfortable, the views of the very active watering hole were fabulous. The outdoor shower was a lovely treat. The food was fresh, healthy and plentiful. Amy one of the amazing camp managers always makes sure you are fed! Ronnie's stories at lunch and dinner were priceless. I definitely think Arathusa needs to put together a book of his 'dad jokes.' I would have bought a copy. Our guide DeBeer and tracker Eugene were both phenomenal. I loved the nature walk I took with DeBeer. His knowledge of the bush is extensive from growing up in the area. The Sabi Sands area itself is very rich in wildlife and every time I have been I have always seen the Big 5. We saw everything except cheetahs during our four day stay. We had a couple of rhino sightings that were amazing and the hippo and her baby at the watering hole interacting with the crocodile was a sight to see. All in all, I can't say anything negative about the stay. The staff is absolutely lovely and I really think they've done an amazing job with an intimate camp. I loved that there were no children and there were maybe a total of max 16 guests when we there. I also enjoyed a lovely massage at the spa with Winnie. They helpfully arranged our Federal Air flights directly to their airstrip, which I recommend so you don't waste time with transfers.

This was such an amazing lodge right from the moment we arrived. We stayed for 4 nights/5 days in September 2023. We were picked up at the air strip and driven to the lodge where we were greeted so warmly with drinks. The staff is exceptional especially our ranger DeBeer and our Tracker Ismail. They both were so knowledgeable about all the animals as well as the area of Sabi Sands/Kruger Park. Thank you to Amy and Alex who took care of us. Everything is included in the price, all meals/drinks and game drives which were twice a day and 3 hours long! We saw the big 5 on our first drive! So amazing! The meals were delicious, they also surprised us with champagne to celebrate my husband's retirement. The suites are individual bungalows, ours faced the waterhole where we could see elephants, giraffes hippos and more drinking, from the comfort of our room. I highly recommend this lodge if you are thinking of doing a safari.
A bonus is that they are partnered with Pack With a Purpose and ask that if possible for you to bring supplies for a local school.
Thank you so much to all the hardworking staff at Arathusa for making our trip so memorable.

After the satafi lodge (which we'd been to several times before) we were originally going to go to cancelled our booking one week before we were due to go, I contacted Arathusa.. Now I know that was the best thing that could have happened!! Jenna at Arathus reservations very quickly sorted out an identical booking for our dates. We arrived at their own airstrip and we're picked up by our ranger, Jordan. From then on our 3 night stay was simply perfect. The waterside suites at Arathusa are simply stunning, clean, comfortable with magnificent views of the dam with its resident hippos and many varied visiting wild life. The staff at Arathusa are fabulous, and a special shout out to Angel, Winnie and if course Ronnie for his stories 🤣🤣. And as for the safari drives?!! Jordan was fantastic, finding us incredible sightings of the Big 5, including an amazing viewing if a female leopard and tiny cub. Every drive was magical. Thank you Jordan, for the care you have in making everyone's trip a once in a life time experience. On top of all that, the food was lovely, wine great quality and plentiful, plus Winnie's "heading" hands at the spa. All in all the four of us had the most glorious stay and we will definitely return one day soon! Thank you Arathusa for making what was to be a fabulous holiday even more special.

We flew to Hoedspruit, I think it was around $400 from Cape Town for two of us. We arranged road transportation through the Arathusa Lodge and that worked out quite well. If I recall correctly it was around $200 for the two of us round trip, and we did get to see part of the area, which was very interesting.

it is accessible by car however the majority of the road from Bushbuckridge is dirt road and it is quite rocky especially with the rains, but still doable. use the Merry Pebbles (MP Stream) Road to Gowrie Gate, it is the least bad road :)
